The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) is nearing the end of a major renovation of Boston’s Logan International Airport’s Runway 4L22R. This rehabilitation project was necessary to maintain the functionality and safety of the runway, and includes new centerline lighting and repaving of the entire runway.

The airport is located in East Boston neighborhood of Boston, and covers 2,384 acres. The largest airport in New England, it has six runways and four Eight-way electrical ductbank installed across runway 4L-22R. passenger terminals.

asphalt pavement, in addition to installing centerline lights on Runway 4L-22R for enhanced pilot guidance.

This project also included airfield improvements to accommodate scheduled service of larger Group VI aircrafts at Logan International Airport, specifically the A380. These improvements are needed to allow for safe and efficient airfield operations and included widening a few key taxiway-runway and taxiway-taxiway intersections.

“Challenges were centered on working on an operational airfield,” said Kelly Smith, media relations manager of the Massachusetts Port Authority. “Although the runway was closed in its entirety for 30 calendar days, the runway needed to be phased such that multiple taxiways which cross the runway were not closed at the same time and that aircraft could access the rest of the airfield.”

All mix placed on this project was warm mix asphalt (with a wax additive). A total of 45,000 tons (40,823 t) of warm mix asphalt was placed, of which 19,650 tons (17,826 t) was placed in seven days.

MECALAC launches its commercialization in the United States Loading of the first container of MCR to the U.S.A.

Geographical development remains a priority of the French Mecalac Group. Present in most European countries, and Australia after 2014, Mecalac Group now opens the doors of the US market thanks to its recent collaboration with a dealer based just outside of Boston, Massachusetts. After this first step and aiming to support the commercial launching of Mecalac excavators and loaders in the American continent, Mecalac will exhibit its machines for the first time at Conexpo fair in Las Vegas in March 2017.

By popular demand from entrepreneurs on the other side of the Atlantic, Mecalac established a distribution partnership with Massachusetts-based Lorusso Heavy Equipment, LLC (LHE) in February 2016. Going forward, LHE will ensure the promotion and commercialization of Mecalac machinery in all of New England, plus three more states: New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

As a first step LHE will mainly distribute the range of MCR crawler excavators and AX wheeled loaders. These two lines are particularly interesting for building and public works professionals, as they meet the needs of the North American market in the logic of intensification of urbanization work.

Tyler Equipment Helps Saltmarsh Industries Expand Saltmarsh Industries, located in Southwick, Mass., serves the Springfield, Worcester, eastern New York and northern Connecticut region, specializing in site development, underground utilities, pavement management, water/sewer/drainage systems and other realms of total site development. Incorporated by Jesse Saltmarsh in 2009, the company is now run by Jesse, Alex and Nick Saltmarsh, and Tony Brignoli.

These four men work together to carry out every daily task of the company’s operations: Jesse, president of Saltmarsh Industries, handles all job bidding contracts and personally manages the customers’ expectations; Alex, vice president, manages the HR department and handles the company’s IT needs, as well as being an onsite haul truck operator and an on road dump truck driver; Nick is the primary heavy equipment operator and provides support to team members when needed; Tony brings years of knowledge and experience to the table and fulfills the duties of the site foreman, company’s mechanic and operator.

Saltmarsh also recently purchased a TopCon Geopositioning unit that allows it to perform all of its own surveying, which helps the company provide a quick and efficient quote, cut down on the cost, and add to its list of services, according to Tony.

In 2010, shortly after Tony joined Saltmarsh Industries, the company had run into a bit of a predicament. Its jobs were becoming more extensive, and although the company had the knowledge and know-how to complete them, it didn’t have enough equipment to keep up with the work.

It was time to expand the fleet.

In late fall of 2010, the four men went to Tyler Equipment in Berlin, Conn., and purchased their first Volvo machine — a 2003 EC210B-LC. Since then, they have purchased a New Holland W130 B loader, Samsung SE 170 wheeled excavator, 2013

When asked, “Why Volvo?” Tony’s response was swift: the name speaks for itself.

“I have worked in this field for many years, and have operated and worked on hundreds of different machines. The Volvo machine by far stands for itself, and it always has. I can say first hand, that it’s the bestmade machine on the market.”

“JCB machines are built for the contractor and these other machines are built for the home owners to use at their homes on the weekend,” said Taylor Brinser, owner of Aqua Tech Irrigation.

Twenty years ago, Brinser started Aqua Tech Irrigation.

During the recession in 2007, Brinser decided that he needed to expand his line of work if his business was going to make it out of the recession on top.

The solution was to purchase a bigger machine.

“I researched, compared every inch and price

between [several companies]. After all the research I decided on the JCB Midi CX backhoe, and haven’t looked back,” said Brinser.

The purchase of this machine helped Aqua Tech Irrigation & Landscape Construction grow 25 to 30 percent that year and increased the jobs that Brisner was able to take on.

“You shouldn’t be surprised at what a machine can do after so long of owning it,” Brinser said, referring to the hydraulic strength of the backhoe.

Currently, Aqua Tech Irrigation & Landscape Construction owns three

JCB machines: a Midi CX backhoe, a 409 loader and, most recently, a 260T skid steer.

“I have never owned a machine that has brought in over $100K in sales within the first month of owning it,” Brinser said, referring to the JCB skid steer.

He added that as Aqua Tech Irrigation & Landscape Construction continues to grow, he will be adding more JCB machines to his fleet.

Nortrax — Westbrook’s 8th Annual Golf, Grub & Gravel

N

ortrax’s Westbrook, Maine, location recently invited contractors and suppliers to sponsor and play golf at its 8th annual “Golf, Grub & Gravel” event in North Yarmouth, Maine. The event, which included golf, lunch and the opportunity to try out some John Deere machines, raised $25,652 for The Travis Mills Foundation (TMF), more than double the $9,000 raised at last year’s outing.

Fundraising opportunities included sponsorships, donations (including $3,000 from Craig Attachments), hole sponsorships, golfing fees, t-shirt sales, 50/50 raffle and a live auction with prizes ranging from John Deere hats to a trip for two to the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in the center of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway donated by Paladin Attachments.

The Travis Mills Foundation On April 10, 2012, United States Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills of the 82nd Airborne was critically injured by an IED while on patrol during his third tour of duty in Afghanistan. He lost portions of both legs and both arms. He is one of only five quadruple amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to survive his injuries.

In September 2013, less than a year and a half later, Mills founded the Travis Mills Foundation, a nonprofit organization formed to benefit and assist combat-injured veterans. In March of 2015, the foundation purchased the former Elizabeth Arden estate in Rome, Maine, and has been renovating it into a retreat for families like his. The property will be a “smart home” to accommodate other amputee veterans.

The retreat will fill a vital role in the recovery, camaraderie, spousal support, reconnection, relaxation and reintegration and be a place where they can recover, relax and enjoy a wide range of adaptive sports and activities.

"But also, it's not just about the retreat, it's about bringing the family back," Mills said. "When I went into the hospital and I had to go on these trips, I was able to take my wife because of how injured I was. But some guys weren't allowed to take their wives and their kids."

Nortrax is a Silver sponsor of the TMF and has donated more $155, 000 in use of John Deere equipment for ground work renovations at the retreat. The employees of the Westbrook branch also have plans to donate their personal time and next spring helping with grounds work at the retreat and anything that needs to be done at that time.

“We are going to continue working with Travis and his organization as long as we can. This guy, his outlook on life, his determination and his drive to help others, are all off the charts. We are privileged to be able to be a part of his efforts,” said Mike Sullivan, general manager of Nortrax’s Westbrook, Maine, branch.

The retreat is expected to host its first 10 families in June 2017.
