Vermont Developers Announce Plans for New $17M Hotel in Downtown Montpelier

This past summer, the Shrewsbury Water and Sewer Department broke ground on New England’s largest biofiltration plant. Though the project was slated for $14.5 million, the winning bid came in at $11.5 million from Waterline Industries of Seabrook, N.H. This amount is exclusive of an additional $900,000 for engineering services and a contingency of five percent — approximately Waterline Industries’ Cat 315 excavator finishes backfill of tank walls. $575,000. The new water treating capabilities of the Home Farm system necessitating a ment plant is scheduled to be completed by Dec. 29, 2018.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Developers have announced plans to build a new hotel in downtown Montpelier.

At a press conference with Republican Gov. Phil Scott and city officials, the Bashara family said that it plans to build an 89room Hampton Inn and Suites behind the Capitol Plaza Hotel, which it owns.

The Capitol Plaza will continue to operate.

Officials say the $17 million project will include a parking structure for up to 300 cars.

Mayor John Hollar said the city and its leaders are working hard to add jobs and attract new residents. He said “this development is an important part of that effort.”

Fred Bashara said the family will continue to work on its plans and permits and hopes to start construction in 2018.

Wollaston Station Closes for 20 Months in January 2018 With customer safety a top priority and to complete the project on time, the MBTA has announced that Wollaston Station will close to Red Line customers for approximately 20 months beginning Jan. 2, 2018, as part of the Wollaston Station Improvements Project.

During the closure, Red Line trains will continue passing through Wollaston Station without stopping. The T also will be operating shuttle bus service to transport customers between Wollaston and North Quincy Stations in an effort to allow continuous use of Wollaston Station’s remaining parking during the construction project.

In addition, to support the most efficient completion of the project, as of Nov. 12, 2017, Red Line service on Sundays through Thursdays between North Quincy and Braintree Stations will be replaced with shuttle buses from 9 p.m.

The parking lot at Wollaston will remain open during the station closure, though the total number of parking spots will be reduced from 538 to 423. Customers who are unable to park at Wollaston are encouraged to instead park at the North Quincy Station overflow lot along Newport Avenue.

Beginning in February 2018, Saturday and Sunday Red Line service between North Quincy and Braintree Stations also will be replaced with shuttle buses during 18 weekends over the course of approximately 24 months.

Major accessibility improvements, modern safety features, and rectifying ongoing drainage and flooding issues within the station are some of the improvements to be made during the project renovating Wollaston Station. Currently the only non-ADA-accessible station on the Red Line, Wollaston will be transformed into a modern, fully accessible facility, making the entirety of the Red Line 100-percent accessible.

Additional upgrades to the station include brand new elevators, additional customer paths, upgraded stairways, new bathrooms and additional lighting. New electrical, fire protection, security, flooding mitigation and site utility upgrades also will occur to support the accessible improvements.

The estimated construction value of the Wollaston Station Improvements is $33 million.

Gov. Scott Breaks Ground on Gold Star Memorial Gov. Phil Scott joined members of the Northfield community, Norwich University and gold star families to break ground on a new monument that will honor those families in Northfield’s Center Park.

“We can never do enough to thank the men and women in our military and their families, and for those who pay the ultimate sacrifice, we’ll never be able to repay them,” said Scott. “But, it is my hope, that by honoring them and their families with this monument, we can offer some small solace and a place for reflection and recognition of that sacrifice.”

The working ground breaking allowed volunteers to participate in the excavation work for the start of this project, which will erect a Gold Star Families Memorial Monument.

These monuments, which are constructed in partnership with the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation, honor gold star families — those families who lost a loved one while he or she was in service of our military.

The monument will be made of four “black mist” granite monoliths and set on a Barre-granite base. The construction of the monument is supported by funds raised by Vermonters United to Help through Gov. Scott’s inaugural gala, as well as in-kind donations from local vendors.

“I am so grateful to all who participated with this working ground breaking, and will make the construction of this monument possible,” said Scott. “I thank Norwich University and the town of Northfield for welcoming this monument, as well as all those who attended my inaugural gala, allowing us to support veterans’ and military causes such as this one.”

The event was attended by local Gold Star Families, as well as Norwich University’s President Richard Schneider and trustee Martha Rainville; Vermont Army National Guard Survivor Outreach Services Support Coordinator Tammie Conner; Vermont Secretary of Administration Susanne Young; Rep. Maxine Grad (D-Moretown); and many members of the Northfield community.

Connecticut Water Celebrates Completion of $30M Rockville Water Treatment Facility Connecticut Water Company (Connecticut Water), along with state and local leaders, celebrated the recent completion of the company’s new Rockville Water Treatment Facility on Nov. 8. The new facility was constructed at a cost of more than $30 million and is part of a public drinking water system that serves 85,000 people in 10 north central Connecticut communities.

“This new Rockville Facility will provide a reliable supply of safe drinking water for families, communities and for public fire protection for decades to come. We are proud of our employees and our construction partners that were able to construct this facility on time and on budget, and we value the great cooperation we had from the Connecticut Department of Public Health Drinking Water Supplies Section in

reviewing and approving plans,” said David C. Benoit, Connecticut Water president and CEO. “The construction of this facility is consistent with our strategy of delivering value and growth through investments in our systems.”

“This type of infrastructure investment needs to be recognized and celebrated, as water safety and quality are essential to the people of this state,” said Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

“A private utility company willingly making an investment of more than $30 million to improve the water for 85,000 customers and the environment aligns with our draft comprehensive state water plan by preserving and ensuring the safety and quality of our natural resources. These investments result in both short-term and long-term dividends, and Connecticut Water Company should

be applauded for doing what is right.”

The newly upgraded facility replaces a treatment facility that first went into service in 1970. The new facility enhances treatment, increases capacity, provides greater energy and operating efficiencies, improves reliability, and drives significant environmental benefits compared with the former plant.

In addition to providing customer and environmental benefits, construction of the new facility boosted the state’s economy. About a dozen Connecticut manufacturers and service providers supplied materials or services for the construction of the new facility.

Mainers Vote ‘Yes’ at Polls on $105M Transportation Bond Mainers have approved a $105 million transportation bond issue.

The proposal on the Nov. 7 ballot will bring an estimated $137 million in matching grants. The bulk of the money would be used to improve secondary roads and bridges.

Money also would benefit ports, harbors, marine transportation, aviation, railroad and bicycle and pedestrian trails. A small

amount also would go to improving culverts, stream crossings and wildlife habitats.

The bond proposal represented the second of three consecutive years of borrowing planned by the Maine Department of Transportation to fill highway funding gaps.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Rhode Island has unveiled a new home for veterans on Veterans Day. Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo hosted the state’s Veterans Day ceremony and a traditional ribbon cutting on Nov. 11 at the home in Bristol, R.I. Veterans began moving in prior to the ceremony.

The new 208-bed home allows veterans to live in cottages equipped with a private bedroom and bathroom. There’s a central location for social activities and the chapel, salon, coffee shop, library, medical examination area and other services. “[More than] 16 major trades have contributed to building this beautiful new home for our honored Veterans, and the pride in their work is evident in every detail,” Raimondo said. “I’m proud that Rhode Island is now leading the way in recognizing the sacrifice of those who’ve served our great nation. Our veterans deserve nothing less.”

Rhode Island is one of the first states to use this new community living concept for veterans’ long-term care, said Kasim Yarn, the state’s director of veterans’ affairs, who

attended the ceremony.

“It dispenses with the traditional, institutional model,” he said in a statement. “This is what our veterans have advocated for.

And with our veterans’ population being overwhelmingly earlier-era veterans, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, we’re ahead of the curve. They deserve nothing less.”

The veterans had previously lived at a home dating back to 1955, on the same site in Bristol.

U.S. Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin visited the new home in May to help dedicate it. He said it sets the standard for the way the nation should be caring for veterans and praised the state and federal partnership that helped move the $121 million project forward.

Construction began in 2015. Members of Rhode Island’s congressional delegation and other state officials joined Raimondo at the ribbon cutting to honor veterans.
