As is the case with any material supplier the size of LandCare Associates, it has a significant material yard that requires equipment for moving, loading and unloading some pretty heavy loads. To accomplish those needs LandCare Associates has relied on Alta Equipment Company.

The relationship started with the purchase of a used JCB excavator and has since expanded to the purchase of a JCB 437 loader, a JCB 407 loader, and most recently, two JCB Teletruks (telescopic counterbalanced fork trucks).

“Our yard has a very small footprint, making parts of it challenging for a standard loader,” Moynihan explained. “At times, we need to stack our pallets so close together that a standard loader is not practical.

confidence it needed to purchase some loaders from Alta when the time was right, the company said.

A big part of the reason LandCare Associates purchased its JCB 437 loader was for snow removal.

According to Moynihan, it was the perfect machine, correctly matched for what they needed it to do.

“We didn’t need a monster machine; we needed a maneuverable, nimble machine that could clean up our yard, and that loader was ideal.”

What has impressed Moynihan the most about its purchase of the JCB machines is the service that LandCare has received from Alta Equipment.

“Last winter we had a parts failure on the loader, just as a storm was moving in. I called the parts and service department and was told the part would be shipped for next day delivery from Chicago. Later that evening, I got a phone call from the service manager telling me that the part wasn’t going to make it, but to make sure that we would be able to clear snow with the storm coming in, they were going to drive down to their Connecticut store and cannibalize one of the inventoried machines in Connecticut and get the part up to me before the storm hits, which is exactly what happened.

“I’ve been around the construction industry my entire life and that’s how things used to be done and it’s the way things should be done, and I am so impressed that’s the way Alta Equipment still does things.

“Our sales rep, Ryan Sears, has been absolutely great to work with. I can call him with a question on virtually anything. Sometimes, I will call him instead of calling the service department because I know I can get him on the phone immediately, and he will have the answer, or he will get it for me very quickly.

My customer base is landscapers and contractors that use this same type of equipment and on a regular basis I recommend Alta Equipment and JCB.” “We have about 3,000 customers come through our doors a year and it’s not unusual for them to notice the JCB machines and have them ask if we would recommend JCB or whether or not we are happy with the machines,” Gordon added. “The answer is always the same, yes we would absolutely recommend JCB and Alta Equipment.

“Our experience with the JCB equipment has been phenomenal. On the rare occasion that we have had an issue, Alta Equipment has immediately taken care of us. Alta Equipment seems to run their business much like we run ours. I look at our team and consider it an A+ team. We surround ourselves with people who have a long history specifically in the hardscape and materials industry.

“We keep the proper levels of inventory to support our customers, well in excess of $3 million worth. We want to make sure that our customers keep fishing from our pond and have no reason to go elsewhere.

Maintaining these standards is not always easy. As an example, COVID has made it very difficult to get certain types of imported materials. We have responded by working harder to source more and more of our materials domestically, which is better for everyone involved,” Gordon said.  CEG

Company Proactively Plans to Harvest More Aggregates

projects such as roadways, parking lots and utility lines and anything excavating-related in northeastern and central Connecticut.

After a few years, he bought a couple of trucks and added trucking to the service offerings. A low-bed trailer was added to the fleet for moving his own equipment and Holden also started doing custom hauling, moving other area contractor’s equipment from site to site.

As the company grew, Holden also expanded his fleet of earthmoving equipment to include several excavators, dozers, wheel loaders, skid steers and much support equipment required for site development. With a growing family to feed, he doubled down with hard work and grew the business at every possible opportunity.

A Chance to Expand In 2015, Holden saw an opportunity to open a gravel pit located at 84 Sadds Mill Road, Ellington, Conn., and expand his operation. This would effectively satisfy two concerns: he would be able to bid more competitively by developing his own source of aggregate and at the same time increase cash flow by selling aggregate to area contractors and municipalities.

He was also aware that his two brothers, Jim and Dave Holden, were still back at the original family business that he left and were looking for an opportunity to move on. Holden offered his brothers the opportunity to form a partnership and operate the aggregate business under the name of Holden Brothers.

With Holden Construction’s most recent purchase, a John Deere 700K, are Greg Hulburt (L), sales rep of The W. I. Clark Company and John Holden, president, Holden Construction.

The gravel pit opportunity presented itself when the Gale Family Farm, a substantial piece of property that at one time had been a dairy operation, no longer wanted to use their own resources to operate the quarry and approached Holden about taking it over.

The Gale family had over the past several years diversified a portion of the property into a golf course and the remainder was kept for farming and the sand and gravel

operation.

The current site that the Holden brothers have now been mining for the last several years is 23 acres, and they have now been permitted to open a second operation nearby. The pit is currently producing gravel, C33 sand, septic sand, bedding sand, fill, round stone and screened topsoil, using a variety of earthmoving equipment, two flat deck screens and a see HOLDEN page 12

time and have been discussing it with Greg, trying to determine when would be the right time for our company to make the investment.

“Recently we were doing a road project; the road was two-lane, and we did not have a lot of room to work with.

We had 12-feet per side, and we had to keep one side open for cars to get through. Trying to put grade stakes up on the gutter side wasn’t too bad but trying to put the grade stakes up on the centerline was terrible. Cars were knocking them down because it was so narrow.

“We came to the realization that if we had the GPS it would have been a cleaner project. If we had been using the GPS technology, we would not have had to use stakes on the centerline at all. Additionally, on that project we came to the conclusion that we would have had lower labor costs and lower material costs because the GPS technology allows you to do a far more exact job of laying of your material and frankly, reduced the stress levels on the project overall.

“When that project was finished, I knew it was time to make a decision, so I got on the phone with Greg and committed to making the purchase.”

According to John Holden, when you make this type of purchase the initial investment can be heavy.

“Not as much on the machine side, for the actual dozer we were only paying about 5 percent more. But, when you add the purchase of all of the Topcon support equipment, the price starts to add up a bit. As best we can estimate, we should have a complete return on investment after our first two or three jobs. The reality is our larger competitors are all using this technology and are able to bid more competitively as a result. If the mid-size contractors are going to survive, we have to make the same investment in technology in order to compete.”

It’s not just the efforts from Greg Hulbert putting together great equipment packages or the advanced technology from John Deere that keeps John Holden committed to John Deere and the W.I. Clark Company. It’s also the service.

“They are great. Anytime I need them they are there, and their response time is great. I don’t need them often but, when I do, they are Johnny on the spot. Parts supply and inventory is great. If by some chance they don’t have what I need they have a rush order

system that will get the part to me right away and it if turns out to be the wrong part they have never charged me a restocking fee. That’s important to me,” John said.

Turns out, the admiration is mutual.

“I really enjoy working with these guys,” Hurlburt said. “They work closely together as brothers and you’re not dealing with a lot of friction, and they are very well respected in this industry and in this town. I enjoy being a part of their business and being friends; our kids even go to school together.

“It makes it a lot easier to work with a customer who is physically out there working on the job. They know what they want, they have experience with equipment, they know how everything comes together to make their business succeed. That’s the really cool part of being able to watch three brothers able to do this.”

“The John Deere product serves us very well,” Holden concluded. “Our mini excavators give us great comfort along with great visibility. We just purchased a John Deere 333 tracked skid steer. That has exceptional visibility. 

Gov. Lamont Tours Merritt 7 Station Being Built in Norwalk Connecticut’s governor was given an update on the major renovations of Norwalk’s Merritt 7 train station by the state’s Department of Transportation (CTDOT) on Sept. 10, a project set to be completed in fall 2022.

Gov. Ned Lamont learned that the station, a stop on the Danbury branch of the Metro-North Railroad, will be equipped with a high-level, 500-ft.-long platform, 105 parking spaces and heated platforms to prevent snow and ice accumulation, according to CTDOT Public Transportation Chief Rich Andreski.

In addition, it will have tower structures on the east and west side of the station with elevators and stairs as well as a pedestrian overpass across the tracks, a passenger information display system, PA and security system, canopy and bike shelter, according to the transportation agency.

The goal of the reconstructed Merritt 7 station, along with expediting travel to New York, is to create a more commuter-friendly environment, where residents can live,

work and shop in the same area without the need for car travel, Lamont said.

Additionally, the new Merritt 7 train stop will meet all Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

Designs of the new station’s platforms aim to improve accessibility for customers and reduce boarding time by providing access to all the cars on the longest trains traveling up and down the line, CTDOT spokesperson Kevin Nursick told the Hour.

The existing platform only allows a few doors to open for boarding.

When finished, though, the new Merritt 7 will serve 28 trains daily, eight of which are direct to New York’s Grand Central Station, Andreski noted. Parking at the Norwalk station will increase from 88 to 105 spots, some of which will be in a newly built and paved lot just across the street from the whistle stop, located along Glover Avenue close to the Norwalk-Wilton border.

The Merritt 7 is the final stop on the Danbury Branch before it connects with the

New Haven Line in south Norwalk.

Connecticut first authorized funding for the project in 2017, when $21 million was approved to borrow for the upgrades to the Merritt 7 stop and design work for a proposed station servicing Orange.

Monies from the Connecticut State Bond Commission put in motion the two projects that had sat idle on the books for several years.

Finally, construction work on the Merritt 7 station began in September 2020.

Better Connection to Be Built to Adjacent Developments The improved station’s walkway bridge will also lead to the Merritt 7 offices, the largest corporate park in Fairfield County, according to the compound’s website.

Merritt 7 Corporate is home to IBM, Xerox, MassMutual and Frontier Communications, among other companies.

Hearst Connecticut Media Group (which includes the Norwalk Hour) also has office space in the complex.

“They want to give it a village effect and you can get everything you need,” Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling said of the area’s new condominium and apartment complexes being developed. “There are all kinds of things that can be done here to get things running smoothly and traffic flowing.”

The new stairs and overpass will provide access to riders coming from the adjacent development. They currently face a long walk to the station or a car ride.

The Merritt 7 train station currently consists of a small shelter and a narrow parking lot on the north and south sides. It also has the only low-level platform on the Danbury branch.

According to the Hour, the new footbridge and improved train station will open at a time when Norwalk is rapidly growing.

The city experienced the seventh-largest population increase in the state during the last decade, and third-largest growth among big cities, according to 2020 census data, with approximately 90,000 residents. 

MassLive reported that after being in the works since 2019, the project officially got under way Sept. 28 with a groundbreaking at the current Deberry property on Union Street in the city’s Mason Square neighborhood.

“This project has been in the making for many years and to know that it’s really happening is exciting,” said Barbara Graham, a Springfield School Committee member who has been working with local legislators and city officials to ensure the project moved forward.

“Our administrators, our community and most of all our students deserve to walk into two state-of-the-art schools to admire the beauty, enjoy the comfort, and get the highquality education they deserve,” she added during the event, held at the Monroe and Hawley Street parking area.

She was joined at the construction kickoff by several other city officials, including Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Superintendent of Schools Daniel Warwick, Director of the Department of Capital Asset Construction Peter Garvey, and Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) Executive Director Jack McCarthy, according to WWLP-22News.

Sarno noted that the city’s partnership with the MSBA has proven fruitful.

“They have been a great partner,” he told MassLive. “We have done $700 million in projects, building new schools and rehabbing schools.”

In addition, Sarno said the new construc-

tion adds value to the neighborhood as well.

“Anytime you open up and build a new school, a new library, a new park, that brings a sense of hope, a sense of positivity, not only for that neighborhood, but for the city itself,” he explained.

Warwick said the time was now to replace both schools as they are antiquated and in disrepair.

“We have buildings that were built in the 1890s with no cafeterias, no gyms, really substandard buildings, so these projects are big for the city of Springfield and they’re big for our future, because our future is our kids,” he elaborated.

As part of the consolidation effort, a park that was adjacent to Deberry School will be rebuilt on the old Massachusetts Career Development Institute site on Wilbraham Avenue, MassLive noted.

Garvey, the director of the city’s Department of Capital Asset Construction, said the park had to be moved to make room for the two schools.

“There was a lot of thought put into positioning the building,” he explained to the news source. “We needed a 5-acre-site for this [new school] and in the middle of a city it is very hard to locate five acres of unused space. The park will be on three acres of land.”

The new DeBerry-Home School project is being funded with combined monies from the city and the MSBA, the latter of which will provide $66.4 million towards the construction.

Construction on the new school should be complete by 2023.

It comes on the heels of the finish to Brightwood-Lincoln Elementary School over the summer and which opened in Springfield’s North End neighborhood in August. 
