When the University of Rhode Island committed to building a new engineering complex, two decisions were obvious. One, five historical buildings, all built in the late 1950s and early 1960s would have to go; and two, the new building needed to be a cutting-edge structure that spoke clearly of its purpose.

Groundbreaking on the $125 million, 190,000-sq. ft. complex took place in April.

keeping all utilities functional to surrounding buildings as we were getting the new building pad ready. We had to clear all the area and reroute utilities around the new building in order to install the new building footprint.”

The exterior of the building, designed by Ballinger architects, utilizes an aluminum unitized curtain wall and features fin projections along with a combination of etched glass wall systems including a large skylight at the roof.

“The building is very transparent as you are looking in from the exterior which reveals the exposed structural steel skeleton,” Peckham said. “The unitized curtain wall system is a type of system in which it is mostly erected from the interior of the building and reduces the labor intensity of field erection. The system is prefabricated in large sections and segmented together in the field, in lieu of a conventional curtain wall system which is ‘stick-built’ in the field. You can still get the same look with other systems, but the designer’s approach has made the exterior a very transparent view from exterior into interior. In total, there is [more than] 77,000 square feet of glass wall systems on the exterior envelope. see URI page 8

A slurry wall is a system that can provide lateral retention, load-bearing capacity and waterproofing to a foundation while becoming part of the permanent structure.

It can be built with zero clearance to exist-

What Is a Slurry Wall? ing structures, act as under-pinning of superficial foundations and in conjunction with pre-founded columns, constitute the perimeter wall in top-down construction projects.

Slurry walls are very versatile — they can assume any shape, with thicknesses varying from 2 to 5 ft. and depths of up to 400 ft., and can be constructed in any imaginable soil condition.

history in the United States. The two company names were combined to form Treviicos.

ICOS Boston had specialized in the slurry wall foundation construction process. This process made possible the construction of hundreds of infrastructure projects and many noted buildings, including the original World Trade Center, according to the company.

In 1997, the newly formed Treviicos was awarded the contract for the construction of the complex foundation system of Boston’s new Southeast Expressway, better known as the Big Dig. With the completion of the Big Dig, Treviicos was able to capitalize on the flourishing Boston economy and was intricately involved in the construction of many new hotels, condominiums and office buildings, as well as medical and educational facilities.

While Treviicos is widely diversified, the core of its reputation in New England was built around slurry wall construction. On the Seaport Boulevard project, Boston’s Silver Line subway tunnel dissects the job site at depths ranging between 18 and 40 ft. below the surface. This had to be taken into consideration in the engineering and design of the slurry wall when the tunnel area comes into play. As a result of this, a slurry wall runs parallel to the tunnel area on each side of the tunnel.

Slurry Wall Construction Begins When construction of the slurry wall begins, one of the most obvious differences from conventional construction methods is that the site has not yet been excavated.

Traditionally, one might think in terms of a hole being dug and then a foundation wall being constructed. On this project, the slurry wall will be completed, the excavation will begin and the slurry wall will be braced where bracing is necessary.

A crane-operated clamshell bucket is used to excavate material within the boundaries of the guide wall. At times, rock is encountered during the excavating process that cannot be removed using the clamshell bucket. In this scenario, crane-operated grinders, which are capable of breaking up even the hardest New England granite, are dropped into the hole.

When dictated by rocky conditions, grinders such as this are lowered into the hole to remove the obstacle.

Upon completion of the guide wall, excavation for the slurry wall begins. Massive clamshell buckets, which are controlled by very specialized cranes, start excavating the dirt and stone between the areas outlined by the guide wall.

The excavation at times will reach depths up to 90 ft.

Once the foundation has been excavated, slurry composed primarily of water and Bentonite is pumped into the hole.

This mixture helps maintain the integrity of the walls of the hole until concrete is poured.

With the slurry in place, 22-ft. wide steel panels manufactured from reinforced steel, which resemble a rebar cage in design, are lowered into the foundation and are sealed together. Each panel weighs between 30,000 and 75,000 lbs..

Once the panel walls are in place and have been sealed together, cranes are used to place concrete funnels that are as long as the depth of the dig into the hole so that concrete can be poured.

Construction of the slurry wall has already started, but the excavation of the site has not yet begun.

According to Jeffrey Taylor, senior project manager of Treviicos, “The cranes on our projects are our life blood.

Cranes are involved in nearly everything that we do. No single crane manufacturer builds the full variety of cranes that are needed on one of our projects.”

The cranes that Treviicos uses for the lifting of the clamshell buckets and diggers are duty cycle cranes manufactured by Liebherr that the company has modified for its specific application. For the hoisting of the rebar cages into the excavated holes and doing general pick and carries around the site such as unloading rebar, Treviicos selected a Mantis 15010 77-ton hydraulic boom crawler crane from Empire Crane headquartered in Syracuse, N.Y. “[The Mantis 15010] perfectly fits the specs we are looking for in this application. It offers tremendous stability and the best maneuverability possible in this application. It has 111 feet of boom, which is all hydraulic. We had previous experience with the use of this crane on a major casino project that we were involved in that contained very tight quarters. With no outriggers, the machine reaches its full capacity in a very small footprint,” Taylor said.

Using advanced technology, aggregate materials and Bentonite are separated from the slurry water.

Once the concrete is poured into place at the bottom of the hole the lighter slurry mixture of water and Bentonite displaces to the top of the hole and the slurry is pumped to a screening and separation area.

The aggregate separated from the slurry is then stockpiled and dried.

RIDOT Completes Drone Assists Contractor by Contour South Kingston Mapping Topography of URI Job Site Road Repairs Early URI from page 8

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) joined with state and local officials to celebrate the early completion of the High Street and Kingstown Road Improvements project in South Kingstown. The much-needed repair for 1.3 mi. of roadway in the villages of Wakefield and Peace Dale finished in August, approximately two months ahead of schedule and about $300,000 under budget.

“I’d like to congratulate our project management team for their diligent work that allowed us to finish this work early while staying on budget,” said Peter Alviti Jr., RIDOT director. “And thanks to the funding provided by the RhodeWorks program, we can check two more roads off the list of bad roads in Rhode Island.”

These two roads had historic street flooding problems, which contributed to deteriorated pavement conditions. The driving surface had gotten so poor that following the severe winter of 2015, RIDOT had to invest $81,500 to patch large sections of pothole-ridden roadway to keep it passable until this project could begin.

“The town of South Kingstown is truly appreciative of the state’s efforts in bringing the High Street and Kingstown Road Improvements project to fruition,” said Stephen A. Alfred, South Kingstown town manager. “These critical arterial/collector roads have suffered poor pavement and drainage conditions for many years. We applaud RIDOT’s entire project team that, under the leadership of Director Alviti, worked tirelessly in seeing that these much-needed improvements were completed, all for the betterment of the entire community — residents, businesses and visitors alike.”

In addition to drainage improvements, the $6.5 million project focused on pavement replacement; Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant sidewalk installation; and the addition of new signing and striping. Work also included the installation of school zone flashing signs to call more attention to the school zone for passing motorists during normal school hours at the Wakefield Elementary School.

The project area encompasses 1 mi. on High Street, from Main Street to Route 108 (Kingstown Road), and 0.3 mi. on Route 108 (Kingstown Road) from High Street to North Road.

This fall, RIDOT expects to wrap up work on an additional project design to minimize the impact of stormwater runoff from these roads into the nearby Saugatucket River.

This $715,000 project involves the installation of three stormwater treatment areas in the Saugatucket River watershed, and is on budget and on schedule, set to finish in November. These improvements will result in a net improvement in water quality around the river, which flows through the heart of South Kingstown and into Point Judith Pond.

cranes and pile driving/drilling equipment. During the concrete foundations installation, most of the concrete pours utilized a concrete pump truck to convey concrete from mixing truck to within the formwork. A large drill rig for drilling the hydraulic elevator piston casing will mobilize to the site parallel to concrete installations. In addition, pumps and dewatering frac tanks have been employed to control the height of the existing water table during concrete foundation installations. Once the foundations are complete, two cranes will mobilize the site in mid-October to support the structural steel erection sequence which will be sized at 300 tons [crawler] and 170 tons [hydraulic] each.

Another unique tool being utilized on the project is a drone.

“We’ve used a drone to fly over the site at certain intervals to do some contour mapping of the topography of the existing site. This will enable us to see what the grades were at a certain date when they were handed off to another contractor.” Peckham said. “In addition, we can utilize the footage from the drone to identify existing features and conditions that existed on a certain date, and compare the footage several months or years later, if there’s been damage, we have a good benchmark for all existing conditions. To that point, we’ve also utilized vibration monitoring for preparation of pile driving to monitor any movement or cracking within the

existing buildings that are in immediate proximity to the pile driving or heavy equipment operation within the site.”

They’ve also utilized building information modeling, or BIM, for mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems design analysis. They’ll continue utilizing the modeling throughout the project for the coordination of all of the piping, duct work and electrical systems conduit/lighting through the buildings, as well as to develop certain exterior building facade mock-up documents, Peckham said.

“It’s definitely going to be a signature building that consolidates most of the engineering programs into one building. The campus over the last 15 years plus has transformed quite a bit, especially on that side with the recent buildings they have been constructed which are a little more cutting edge versus the original older style buildings. It’s definitely a different look.”

The consolidation allows students and faculty who were once grouped by program to now be grouped by interest, making problem solving that much easier, Wright said.

The steel work is scheduled to begin in October, with exterior glass on the building envelope set to begin in March 2018. The building is projected for a completion in the summer of 2019.

Maine Deactivates 1035th Survey, Design Detachment

The company’s lineage is the second oldest in the state. It was founded in 1810 in Norway as an infantry company, said 1st Lt. Jonathan D. Bratten, the Maine Army National Guard Command Historian. The Lineage will be preserved by Maine’s 251st Engineer Company to ensure that the heritage of the unit never disappears.

The Maine Army National Guard’s 133rd Engineer Company held a Deactivation and Flag Folding Ceremony for the 1035th Engineer Survey and Design Detachment at the Brunswick Armed Forces Reserve Center Sept. 10, 2017.

The 1035th Engineer Detachment helped support other engineer companies statewide by providing surveys of job sites, land analysis, detailed drawings, maps and plans for vertical construction, horizontal construction and geospatial engineer missions.

“They possess a specialty skill that assists and supports all engineer units with projects,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Daniel S. Dubay Jr., the commander of the 1035th Engineer Detachment. “They are the only quality control and quality assurance pertaining to ground projects. If the 1035th assets weren’t available, engineer projects would suffer to an extreme degree.”

The 1035th Engineer Company lineage is the second oldest in the state. It was founded in 1810 in Norway as an infantry company, said 1st Lt. Jonathan D. The knowledge of the existing survey and design team

members will be utilized by integrating soldiers directly into engineer units.

“Some soldiers of the 1035th will stay at the headquarters and headquarter’s company 133rd and others will be pushed out to the subordinate units, all continuing to train and execute survey and design practices,” said Dubay.

“Consolidated training a few times a year will be required in order to properly train new soldiers.”

The detachment holds battle honors from the War of 1812, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Iraq and most recently Afghanistan in 2013.

“We are not going away,” said Dubay. “A man is only as strong as the company he keeps.”

UConn Students Return to Find Major Construction on Campus STORRS, CONN. (AP) Thousands of University of Connecticut students returned to campus to find some major road construction and traffic problems.

About 19,300 undergraduate and graduate students started classes on Aug. 28 in Storrs and 12,400 moved into the dormitories.

The school was unable to complete scheduled road construction this summer, leaving one entrance to campus closed and several roads with altered or one-way traffic patterns.

The school said the construction is part of

a multi-year project necessary to replace aging pipes and other underground infrastructure.

Students were emailed directions on how to get where they are going, and the school is asking them not to rely on GPS devices, which don’t show the construction.

Other motorists are being asked to avoid the area.

Cianbro has outgrown its educational facilities and is now set to unveil its new workforce development center based within the remodeled spaces of the former UTC Tech Center building in Pittsfield, Maine.

In an era of chronic shortages of skilled craftsmen and women in the construction industry, Cianbro has used in-house educational efforts over the years to develop thousands of highly qualified construction professionals. Because of the company’s growth and the intense demand for training, Cianbro has outgrown its educational facilities and is now set to unveil its new workforce development center based within the remodeled spaces of the former UTC Tech Center building in Pittsfield, Maine.

The addition of the new facility will allow the company’s workforce development department — The Cianbro Institute — to base future educational initiatives from within the facility’s new fully-equipped classrooms, office spaces for instructors, and spacious areas for larger educational gatherings.

Cianbro plans to continue efforts to ease the region’s worker-shortage through the use of the new facility.

Gov. Paul LePage and other distinguished guests joined Cianbro leaders Pete and Andi Vigue for a ceremony and tours to commemorate the new facility.

The event began with remarks at the podium.

“We believe that the challenges that we face with the workforce in our country and state are disguised opportunities,” said Cianbro Chairman and CEO Pete Vigue.

“And we believe that it is our responsibility within this organization and within our industry to invest in the development of our future workforce while providing them an opportunity for personal growth. What we've learned when we support and believe in people is that the opportunities are endless, not only for individuals but also for our company.”

Until now, the Cianbro Institute has utilized space within the company’s Operational Services Building in Pittsfield,

in combination with classrooms located at North Lancey Street. At these locations, the Institute has conducted sessions ranging from new hire orientation and craft education to leadership development. Once the team is moved into the new facility, the core of Cianbro’s workforce development programs will exist under one roof where instructors and the support team will work together in close proximity. In addition, the new location provides some simple efficiencies such as eliminating travel and setup time between facilities, better management of classrooms, better communication among the team, and a loading dock to offer the ability to move necessary equipment in and out for classroom use.

As Cianbro continues to extend its reach as a company (currently working in more than 40 states), it will be critical for instructors to have the ability to deliver certain developmental opportunities remotely or via broadcast. By having multiple rooms equipped with cameras, this option will become a reality, giving Cianbro the opportunity to reduce travel costs, reach more team members at one time, and cut down on time away from a project.

Additionally, the facility will have a skilled-trades multi-functional room to conduct a variety of hands-on educational sessions. For example, rigging is an important skill to develop across many of the trades. The multi-functional room will offer the ability to set up 16-ft. gantries for indoor demonstrations and activities. The possibilities for this room are plentiful, as are all of the many potential uses that the new Cianbro Institute facility brings to the company.
