Three years into a $60 million project to replace the North Hero-Grand Isle bridge in Vermont, crews are pouring concrete with an eye toward building the new replacement drawbridge in the 2022.

The bridge links two islands on Lake Champlain. Progress was slowed earlier by the unexpected discovery of hazardous contaminants, but the materials have been safely removed and work is back on track.

“Things are going well,” said Jacqueline Dagesse, spokes-

woman of the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans).

In recent months, crews with Cianbro excavated lake-bottom sediments from inside the cofferdams and cleaned bedrock in preparation for placing the subfootings for two bascule piers, said Taylor Ware, VTrans resident engineer.

Each subfooting was poured via tremie with 1,000 cu. yds. of concrete for each subfooting. Each tremie placement required 13 continuous hours of concrete work. After the bascule pier subfootings were complete, the cofferdams were dewatered and rock anchors installed to withstand buoyant forces on the dewatered cofferdam. Cianbro crews next erected formwork, installed rebar and poured the bascule pier footings, each about 680 cu. yds. of concrete. Once bascule pier footings were complete, they began building the reinforced concrete walls of the bascule piers and supports for the bascule spans.

Construction material prices have seen dramatic rises during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially lumber, and contractors have said they are busier than usual. Both those factors played a role in the inflated cost, VTDigger reported, leading museum officials to push back the construction to 2022.

The Fairbanks Museum has raised more than $2 million for the project from donors, foundations, grants and loans, and if the proposed federal money comes through, it will cover the remaining cost of the project, executive director Adam Kane said July 7.

Highlighting the museum’s role as an anchor institution in St. Johnsbury, Kane said the hope is that people will visit the historic facility and patronize the downtown area.

“This addition to the museum will help drive that visitation, and that’s going to spill over to all the businesses around us,” he added.

The $2.47 million USDA grant is contingent on a successful federal budget, VTDigger noted. The federal fiscal year begins in October, but appropriations often are not completed by that point. 

O&G Industries Hosts Students From Meriden Public Schools

O&G Industries recently hosted high school students from Meriden Public Schools at its Southbury, Conn., quarry. The onsite visit and tour, which included students from Maloney High School and Platt High School, is a part of the Meriden Public School’s career outreach program.

Fifty students visited the quarry over a two-day span to learn about careers in construction. Quarry Manager Tom Alexon Jr. led the tours, which included opportunities to learn first-hand about careers as equipment operators, commercial drivers, heavy equipment mechanics and in quarry operations.

Crews to Preserve, Renovate, Restore General Pierce Bridge

Ransome Attachments Conducts Demos at F&W Equipment in Connecticut Ransome Attachments conducted an attachment demonstration at F&W Equipment Corporation on July 28, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The companies showed off Ransome’s Exac-One mini mower, Exac-One Model PTO300 log grapple, Black Splitter S2 800 cone splitter, and Gyru-Star compact screening bucket, all of which are now available through F&W in its role as a stocking dealer.

F&W Equipment has been one of Connecticut’s leading distributors of landscaping and earthmoving equipment since 1939, so when the company offered Ransome an opportunity to conduct a demo day, it pounced on the opportunity. The company’s primary lines — Case, Doosan and Kubota — also happen to be a natural fit for many of Ransome’s attachments.

Consolidated Early Learning Academy Break Ground in Conn.

A groundbreaking recently was held to kick off the Consolidated Early Learning Academy project in New Fairfield, Conn.

This project consists of the construction of approximately 41,000 sq. ft. of building addition to an existing elementary school building as well as limited renovations and upgrades to corridors, vestibules and teaching spaces in the existing building. The new addition is built adjacent to the existing building with several areas proving connecting access. The project also includes both new and replacement sitework and exterior features.

Major sitework consists of all new underground utility work, pavements and drives and the construction play areas. The existing school building and exterior areas outside of construction fencing will be occupied by students and staff during the construction period.

The O&G Building Group is the construction manager, JCJ Architecture is the project architect, Colliers International is the owner’s project manager. The project is expected to be completed in fall of 2022 and will meet the State of Connecticut HighPerformance Building Standards. 
