The 10-week construction schedule that began July 13 and will conclude in late September will erect a 360-ft. rail tunnel in Middlebury, Vt., that will replace two deteriorating bridges and support 3,550 linear ft. of rail track.

Kubricki Construction Corp. of Wilton, N.Y., is the lead contractor on the $70 million job that is being financed almost exclusively by the federal government with two percent by the state of Vermont.

The tunnel is being constructed with 422 precast concrete U-Walls that are positioned in bottom and top sections. The pieces are joined by 20 bolt connections that are sealed with grout, butyl rubber and elastomeric bearing pads, which are designed to keep water out of the tunnel.

New England Rock Poses No Challenge for Griffin Brothers In 2006, Garrett and Bill Griffin took a big leap of faith and, with some financial backing from their parents, started Griffin Brothers Excavation LLC. The first few years were tough.

Small homeowner projects such as septic systems and other residential type work was all that seemed to be available to them. Then came the big recession in 2008. But the brothers stayed the course, worked very hard and eventually made it.

Today, the company has 14 employees and boasts an equipment fleet that includes nine excavators, three loaders, two haul trucks, three dozers and a brand-new Powerscreen Premiertrak 330.

The boys acquired an older Powerscreen Chieftain that got Griffin Brothers in the business of screening topsoil as well as other spec’ed material, and it wasn’t long after that a used Metro Trak portable tracked jaw crusher was added to the mix.

Connecticut is known for its rocky conditions and as Griffin Brothers expanded its operation the need to be able to crush rock and have the ability to produce its own aggregate for re-use elsewhere on site without bringing in outside contractors was imperative. By putting together a used package that met its needs, Wylie was able to assist Griffin Brothers in reaching its next level of growth.

By producing its own aggregate and topsoil and at times selling what it produced, Griffin Brothers was able to greatly increase its profitability. As the economy improved, so did Griffin Brothers’ ability to bid on larger projects.

Unfortunately, with larger projects comes the need to handle larger capacities of rock and aggregate processing.

“One of the challenges in the New England market, besides the hard rock, is the small footprint that you have to work in,” said Garrett Griffin. “As the population density increases in New England, so do the challenges of working in tight spaces. We reached the point where what we really needed was a machine that was fairly compact, and portable, yet had a greater produc-

A Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall that’ll be 80 percent of the size of the original memorial wall that opened in Washington, D.C., in 1982 is being built in Fall River, Mass.

Work on Rhode Island’s Newport PellBridge Enters Phase 3 On Aug. 10, the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) announced that Phase 3 of construction on the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge was under way, an operation expected to last through November. The entire project is designed to rehabilitate the 51-year-old structure’s roadway deck.

The general contractor for the bridge’s upgrade is Aetna Bridge Co. in Warwick.

RITBA said the contract is worth $19 million.

More commonly known as the Newport Bridge, the suspension bridge spans the east passage of Narragansett Bay and carries four lanes of RI 138 traffic between the city of Newport on Aquidneck Island and the town of Jamestown on Conanicut Island. The Newport Bridge is, in turn, connected to the mainland by the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge.

The Newport Bridge was first opened in June 1969 and at 1,601 ft. long, the main span of the structure makes it the longest suspension bridge in New England. The overall length is 11,247 ft. In addition, its main towers reach 400 ft. above the surface of Narragansett Bay. The Newport Pell Bridge Deck Rehabilitation Project consists of work per-

According to the RITBA, the improvement work includes: • Partial depth hydro-demolition and

replacement of the concrete on single lanes of the roadway deck, • Full depth demolition and replacement of reinforced concrete joint headers and installation of new joint seals at some piers, • Milling and paving on the road deck and, • Other miscellaneous repairs/work items.

The beginning of the newest work to upgrade the Newport Bridge comes on the heels of the finish of Phase 2 in late July, which the RITBA said was completed a month early.

Crews working on the first two phases performed much of the same type of upgrades as those being done on Phase 3, such as hydro demolition on the eastbound travel lanes and expansion joint header repair on the road deck during Phase 1 in the spring, followed by the same improvements on the westbound passing lane in Phase 2.

During the newest construction, two lanes will be open coming from Newport during the afternoon rush hour. Traffic levels will be monitored and two lanes heading into Newport during the morning rush hour will be open if needed. During non-peak hours, there may be one lane open in each direction, the RITBA said, allowing workers access to two lanes. 

excavator is still in operating condition today. Correia has since retired from the excavating business and has turned the company over to his son, Blake.

Blake grew up around his dad’s business.

He had a seat in the excavator at age six and after completing college, he took a job with a local public utility company where he applied his college education and the skills that he had learned growing up in his dad’s business.

In 2009, while Blake was off learning utility contracting, Joe Correia put Correia Excavators on a hiatus and started a home development company, essentially getting out of the excavating business almost entirely. However, the longer Blake worked in private industry, the itch to get back in the seat of his own excavators started to grow.

The more he learned working for others, the more opportunities he saw in private industry, the more he could no longer control the itch and in late 2016 he approached his dad about getting Correia Excavators Inc. back out and digging again, this time with a strong eye toward utility work.

“To keep the bills paid coming out of the gate, we did any type of site work and excavating work that was available to us, but I looked for any opportunity initially to sub on utility work,” Blake Correia said. “During my years with the utility company, I had made some good connections and that opened up some doors. Phase One of Massachusetts’ Twin Cities Rail Trail Begins A congressman’s vision is one step closer to reality, now that brush and trees have been cleared to pave the way for Phase One of the Twin Cities Rail Trail, a 4.5-mile bike path that will connect the towns of Leominster and Fitchburg, Mass.

U.S. Rep. John Olver, the Twin Cities’ congressman at the time, envisioned the recreational and environment-preserving potential of this project when he secured a Rail Trail earmark two decades ago.

Most of the preliminary clearing work for this recreational jewel has been completed. The first phase of the project will extend the trail from the Fifth Street Bridge in Fitchburg to Carter Park in Leominster.

Phase Two, which will extend the trail into the downtown areas, will occur next summer.

When completed, the rail trail, which will follow the decommissioned Fitchburg & Worcester Railroad line, will connect Mechanic Street in downtown Leominster and the Intermodal Transportation Center on Water Street in downtown Fitchburg. Both communities are located northwest of Boston, near Worcester.

The paved trail would be 12 ft. wide, providing enough clearance for two lanes of walking and cycling, and for emergency vehicles if necessary.

Along the way, it will pass through the South Fitchburg Playground and Fitchburg Municipal Airport in Fitchburg, and the Doyle Conservation Area, HealthAlliance-Leominster Hospital, Watertower Plaza, historic Doyle Field, Pine Grove Cemetery and Carter Park in Leominster.

Like everything else in life, the coronavirus pandemic pushed back the construction timeline beyond early spring, though just slightly.

The rail trail project has an estimated price tag of $18 million — $14.4 million in federal funds and $3.6 million in state money. 

Today, Correia’s fleet of excavating equipment, which includes a lineup of seven excavators, three loaders, two backhoes, two dozers and various other support type equipment, is made up almost exclusively of late-model John Deere equipment and Ford and Mack trucks. Correia has approximately 10 full-time employees and is doing approximately $2.5 million in work this year.

A Matched Set Part of Blake Correia’s attraction toward John Deere iron has to do with aesthetics, but having dealer support also is tops on his list.

“I think it’s a great look to have your equipment all match up from the same high quality manufacturer,” he said from a job site where the crew was installing 3,200 ft. of water main, an approximately $500,000 job. “But that would only be possible if you had a great sales rep from a great dealership that sells great equipment, and that’s exactly what we have with Greg Hurlburt, W.I. Clark and John Deere.”

According to Correia, Hurlburt is responsible for Correia Excavator’s fleet of equipment being consisting almost entirely of John Deere iron.

“He took the time to listen to us, the time to figure out what our needs were, as well as paying attention to our budget,” he said. “It didn’t matter whether it was a new piece of equipment or a used piece of equipment, he put the effort in, at times finding the right excavator halfway across the country. At one point, we sent him to go find the right excavator to match up with a hammer that we had previously purchased. I’m sure that’s not an everyday request.”

The brand loyalty doesn’t go unnoticed by W.I. Clark.

“We really appreciate it when a customer shows us brand loyalty,” Hurlburt said. “We go to every length to get and

to keep that kind of loyalty. We even took the Correia’s out to Iowa to see how the John Deere machines are made.

“It gives me a sense of pride to work with contractors like them,” Hurlbut added. “They take a great deal of pride in the work that they do and in the equipment they own.

Kubricki Construction Hopes to Finish Job By End of Sept.

The tunnel is being constructed with 422 precast concrete U-Walls that are positioned in bottom and top sections.

Kubricki Construction Corp extended the bottom U-Wall sections up to the north end of the tunnel underneath Main Street first and then set up 94 precast tunnel pieces.

The 10-week construction schedule that began July 13 and will conclude in late September will erect a 360-ft. rail tunnel in Middlebury, Vt., that will replace two deteriorating bridges and support 3,550 linear ft. of rail track.

Smithfield, R.I., including Liebherr LR1300 and LR1200 cranes that weigh 330 and 275 tons. The heaviest U-Wall piece weighs approximately 80,000 lbs. and the average weight is 65,000 to 70,000 lbs., according to Joshua French, Fort Miller’s vice president of sales and marketing. The completed four-sided tunnel section will be 17 ft., 9 in. wide and 24 ft., 4 in. high, he said.

Prior to tunnel construction, 12 ft. of soil from the rail corridor was excavated between the Seymour Street fire station and the Elm Street overpass. Nearly 20,000 cu. yds. of soil were removed by 15 dump trucks that hauled the soil to various locations.

In between excavation on the north and south ends of the project, Maine Drilling & Blasting of Gardiner, Maine, com-

pleted 10 blasts to remove ledge on both sides of the Main Street Bridge.

Before installing the tunnel U-Walls, Kubricki began laying down geotextile fabric and crushed stone that will form the sub-base on which the precast concrete tunnel pieces and retaining walls will rest.

With the rail corridor excavated and blasting completed, the construction of the 360-ft.-long tunnel that will replace the Main Street and Merchants Row bridges began.

Kubricki’s next step will be to set nearly 150 bottom U-Walls on the north end of the project, from Main Street at the end of the rail tunnel to crossing near Fire & Ice. Next, Kubricki will begin backfilling areas around the tunnel. A concrete pump truck will pump a flowable cement mix fill into some areas and Kubricki will bring back excavated soil form Fifield Farm.

The final pieces will be set in place from Seymour Street and Kubricki will complete the job by removing soil from the rail corridor and installing concrete retaining walls that extend the precast on the south end to the trestle bridge over Otter Creek. Then Kubricki will form the concrete bridge deck that will sit on top of the tunnel.

The construction equipment Kubricki is using on the project includes Link-Belt ATC86100 and ATC-5275 cranes that are 235 and 350 tons; a Cat 335F excavator; a Cat 938 wheel loader; Cat D5 and D6 dozers; and a SkyJack SJ1056 lift.

The 360-ft. long tunnel will not only replace the deteriorating bridge, but also upgrade the railroad. According to a VTrans report, the bridges did not have enough vertical clearance for double-stack rail cars. The tunnel will lower the vertical rail bed for more than 3,000 linear ft. that will allow vertical clearance to be extended from less than 18 ft. to 21 ft. that allows the passage of double-stack freight trains without impacting the grade of the streets and sidewalks above.

The tunnel will change the rail alignment that reduces the sharp curve and provides better horizontal clearance for trains.

These changes benefit Vermont Railway, the main part of the Vermont Rail System, which also owns the Green Mountain Railroad. The VRS hauls more than 25,000 freight cars each year, with nearly 90 percent of traffic serving Vermont businesses.

Transportation officials note that moving freight on Vermont’s western rail corridor lowers truck traffic on state highway routes, including Routes 7 and 22A and reduces wear and tear on the roads. One double-stack rail car can carry the load of eight trucks.

The completed project will free 9,000 sq. ft. of landscaped area covering the tunnel, which will reunite the town’s Triangle Park with its Village Green, after a 170-year hiatus. Triangle Park had been part of the Green from the 1790s until 1949 when the Rutland Railroad divided the two by building a depressed rail line right through downtown.

Triangle Park will become a mix of hardscape and green space to accommodate public events and casual relaxation and the newly named Lazarus Park will feature a pathway to Riverfront Park and Marble Works business district. In both parks, granite blocks from the rail corridor will provide seating.
