The Tobin Bridge in Chelsea, Mass., was erected in 194849 at a cost of $27 million. The bridge provides three lanes of passage both north and southbound over the Mystic River. It was designed by J.E. Greiner Co. and opened to traffic in 1950, connecting the Charlestown section of Boston with Chelsea. During its nearly 70-year tenure, the bridge has been
plagued with aging rivets, rust and floor beam fissures. Potholes, electrical problems and bolts shaken out of place by vehicle vibrations add to the ever-growing list of maintenance items. Previous Projects According to the Boston Globe, the Massachusetts Port Authority wrapped up a 15-year, $50 million program to replace the decks, the asphalt and concrete making up the roads, and a $45 million program to scrape, prime and repaint the bridge around 2007. Another round of rehab took place from 2012 to 2014 under a new operator, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). The three-year,
Gov. Baker Signs $3.9B Bond Bill for Repairs
Gov. Charlie Baker participated in a ceremonial bill-signing on July 10 providing for capital facility repairs and improvements for the Commonwealth, which authorizes approximately $3.9 billion to address the Commonwealth’s statewide capital needs, including higher education campuses, health and human services facilities, state office buildings, public safety facilities, and courts. Baker signed the bill on the campus of Westfield State University, which is planning a renovation of Parenzo Hall into a state-of-the-art facility that will house technology-rich classrooms and two new academic centers. The project is part of the Administration’s new strategic framework for long-term capital investments in public higher education campuses, which prioritizes projects system-wide to address the deferred maintenance backlog and to support workforce skills needs. “Westfield State University is one of many examples of how these capital dollars will be put to good use to renovate the campus and provide state-of-the art classrooms and learning spaces for students,” said Baker. “We thank the Legislature for their collaboration to authorize nearly $4 billion in spending to refurbish and improve our schools, hospitals and courthouses across the state.” “This bond authorization will help support our approach to make the most productive use of taxpayer dollars while addressing the deferred maintenance backlog,” said Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito. “A modernized Parenzo Hall will help prepare a new generation of Westfield students to join the workforce and is an important investment in the region and in the Commonwealth’s future overall.” see BILL page 20
