South Coast Improvement Earns Kudos Merrimack’s Third as Part of Hood Milk Bottle Renovation Water Treatment Plant to Be Built With construction begining in April, Merrimack, N.H.’s third water treatment facility is designed to treat contamination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS. Peter Pitsas, a project manager of Underwood Engineering of Concord, has been overseeing the designs of the PFAS treatment plants for Merrimack Village District (MVD) wells since contamination was discovered coming from faucets at the Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics facility and later within the surrounding groundwater.

Once the new treatment plant is complete, Merrimack will have three PFAS treatment plants for its public water wells serviced by MVD. That will bring the total of New Hampshire PFAS plants to five, including one in Dover and South Coast Improvement Company (SCIC), a design-build general contractor serving New England and the one now under construction in Portsmouth.

Willimantic Waste Rises to New Heights With 818 R-HD Tim and Tom DeVivo had decided that, after 30,000 hours of dependable service, the excavator in their C&D processing plant was due for retirement.

While the old machine had been their “workhorse” for years, the brothers also knew there were now more efficient options available to their operations. This time, they were shopping for a purpose-built material handler.

“The old one didn’t have an elevating cab,” said Tim DeVivo, noting that high-rise visibility would help operators to sort the incoming bulk items delivered to the site. “A purpose-built machine gives us fuel savings, too, which add up over eight to ten-hour shifts every day.”

Commitment to Service A search of local equipment dealers narrowed their choices down to two contenders.

By spring of last year, they decided on a Sennebogen 818 R-HD from the nearby branch of Tyler Equipment.

“We knew what we wanted,” DeVivo continued. “We don’t need a wheeled machine here; it sits in one place all day, picking through the material as it comes in and loading the shaker table. I felt very comfortable with Tyler, with their service and warranty package. They made the commitment to respond within 24 hours when we need service.”

The 818 is now on duty sorting and loading as much as 500 tons of material a day: a typical day runs about 250 to 350 tons.

DeVivo’s C&D operation is on one of three adjacent Willimantic sites, including their maintenance yard and MRF facility.

C&D processing begins with Willimantic’s large bin fleet for construction and demolition projects, along with household bin rentals collecting bulk items that range from sofas to hot water and propane tanks. The bin operation, including three feeder stations north of the city, serves a 30mi. radius in eastern Connecticut.

The job that was a design build project, which required companies to propose their methodology for the job as well as a price.

“Our winning proposal was a twin fourspan precast concrete spliced bridges.

Abutments and piers are supported on pile foundations,” the Reed & Reed said.

Their bid price of $44.3 million also was accepted.

“Our team looked at a combination of price and proposal of how they will construct the bridge with details on maintenance and awarded it to Reed & Reed on a mathematical formula,” VTrans said.

The final price total is $50.9 million and is 90 percent federally funded.

Age and heavy traffic took a toll on the Rockingham bridges, known locally as the High Bridges, which were built in 1960, rehabilitated in 1988 and were in poor condition, with areas of significant concrete spalling and exposed rebar on the underside of the deck and areas of section loss in structural steel. An engineering study determined the most long-term cost-effective solution was to replace both bridges.

The new bridges were designed for a 100year service life and are expected to save money on painting and maintenance over the next century. To accomplish this, designers used stainless steel reinforcing in the pier caps and deck, as well as concrete highly resistant to chloride penetration. An analysis of the site’s soil also was completed to ensure the piles were large enough to account for 100 years of degradation.

Once bridge 24S is open, the temporary crossovers will be removed and traffic will be restored fully in both directions.  CEG
