The Route 18 road widening and bridge reconstruction project in Weymouth and Abington is the latest Accelerated Bridge construction project in Massachusetts, which includes others in the Accelerated Bridge Program, an eight year $3 billion campaign that targeted more than 500 bridges across the state. P. Gioioso & Sons of Hyde Park, Mass., is the lead contractor on the Weymouth and Abington project with D&R Contracting of Melrose, Mass., focusing on the road paving. Construction began in the fall of 2017 with a completion of late 2022 scheduled. The budget for the job is $68 million with the bulk being paid by the Federal Highway Administration with the balance
from state and local funding. Kristen Pennucci, MassDOT spokesperson, said the contractors are currently working on road widening and site work at the bridge. Drainage basins are completed and drainage work to tie into the basins is ongoing. Partial demolition of the bridge was completed in August 2019 during a weekend vehicular shutdown. Drilled shafts are currently being installed for the new bridge. All new utility poles have been installed and a majority of utility relocation has been completed along the entire corridor. The contractors will continue working on road widening and rebuild the bridge and its associated components for use in its temporary and permanent locations. Then final paving will be completed along see BRIDGE page 16
The new bridge is scheduled for completion in August 2021, according to Chris Evasius, a MassDOT assistant construction engineer.

IBEW Local 103, NECA Partner With Bruins, TD Garden The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 103, and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) of Greater Boston have officially entered into a new sports marketing partnership with the Boston Bruins. Now, while cheering on the Bruins at a TD Garden home game, fans will notice something new: IBEW Local 103 and NECA contractors’ names written on the ice. “We’re thrilled to kick off this partnership with the Boston Bruins,” said Lou Antonellis, business manager/financial secretary of IBEW Local 103. “They represent the same toughness, heart, and sense of teamwork that our own IBEW Local 103 members carry with them wherever they go — both on the job and out in the community. The Bruins work hard, train hard, and do what it takes, individually and as a team, to be the best in the league, and our members really respect and relate to that.” “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with the Boston Bruins and our friends at TD Garden,” said Glenn Kingsbury, executive manager of NECA Greater Boston. “Our union contractors have powered the iconic venue since we helped build it 25 years ago. We feel fortunate to play an integral part in creating what is truly a staple of the Boston

experience — for locals and visitors alike. This partnership is an exciting and special way to honor our longstanding relationship.” “The Bruins are committed to the Greater Boston community and are proud to partner with the city’s union electricians,” said Cam Neely, president of the Boston Bruins. “These are organizations that share our values and do a lot of good for our communities. It will be great to see their logos featured on our ice.” Since its grand opening in 1995, TD Garden has been the official home of the Bruins and Boston’s NBA team, the Boston Celtics. IBEW Local 103 and NECA Greater Boston completed the electrical por-
tion of TD Garden’s construction, beginning in 1993, and have since remained the sole providers of the venue’s electrical service and maintenance. Most recently, IBEW Local 103 and NECA contractors did the entire electrical portion of TD Garden's new, 50,000 sq. ft. addition, which wrapped up in 2019 after two years of construction. The addition includes a new facade, entryway and front lobby, in addition to new elevators, parking, dining and entertainment sections and luxury suites for guests. With the renovation completed, the electricians and technicians remain on site at the Garden each day, powering top-notch fan
experiences for the venue’s variety of events. Millions of fans pass through the Garden each year for various events and have come to expect a truly electric experience, created by a flawlessly cohesive production of light, sound, and screens. Whether you’re enjoying a stellar light show at an Elton John concert or cheering on a power play at a Bruins game, IBEW and NECA are powering it all. In addition to having their logos proudly displayed on the ice of TD Garden, the new partnership with the Boston Bruins will award IBEW Local 103 and NECA Greater Boston members a number of other benefits. Fans can expect, for example, to see substantial Local 103 and NECA LED exposure during the upcoming playoff games. IBEW Local 103 and NECA also plan to leverage the Bruins logo and imagery in upcoming advertising and recruitment initiatives. The initiative is part of IBEW Local 103 and NECA Greater Boston’s refreshed and expanded marketing efforts, under the leadership of Antonellis and Kingsbury. Through proactive outreach and engagement, Local 103 and NECA are successfully increasing brand awareness, diversifying and growing their memberships, and winning more work in key markets.

Mammoet Completes Furnace Shipment Project for Cianbro
Mammoet rolls on the first of 60 modules. Due to a tidal difference of up to 16 ft. (4.87 m) between high and low tide, only one module was able to be loaded per day before the tide would again be too high to safely execute barge loading.
Mammoet has successfully completed the weighing and loading of 60 modules for Cianbro’s furnace shipment project at its module manufacturing facility in Brewer, Maine. The modules are destined for a major petrochemicals plant in the United States. Mammoet proposed a new wireless weighing technology as it provided the most cost-effective and efficient approach for the weighing scope, in turn benefitting the overall project schedule. For the task of weighing 60 modules oneby-one, having wireless load cells provided efficiency and reduced congestion onsite while improving safety. Without wires, there were fewer obstacles and potential hazards on the work site and setting up the system saved time, because there were no wires to run. Prior to the start of the project, Mammoet worked with the wireless weighing technology fabricator to slightly modify and customize the design, in order to meet Mammoet requirements ensuring safe and flawless execution. The weight of the modules varied between 30 and 175 tons (27 and 158 t) each, and the heaviest module was 105 by Over the entirety of the project, 72 axle-lines of SPMT were used to transport the 53 by 30 ft. lbs. (174,179 kg). Over the entirety of the project, 72 axle-lines of SPMT were used to transport the weighed modules onto barges. Modules were divided into 18 barge shipments, which were loaded over a period of ten months. Due to a tidal difference of up to 16 ft. (4.87 m) between high and low tide, only one module was able to be loaded per day before the tide would again be too high to safely execute barge loading. Despite the tide and frequently uncooperative weather, Mammoet was successful in completing the project a week ahead of schedule, on budget and incident free. Sam Quisenberry, business development director of Mammoet USA South said, “Cianbro’s expertise and professionalism is evident in the work they do at their pristine and impressive module manufacturing facility. Mammoet is pleased to have partnered with Cianbro for the execution of this project, where we were able to employ a combination of our heavy transport and weighing equipment and our expertise to overcome logistical obstacles and bottlenecks.” For more information, visit mammoet.com.

Wider Lanes Will Reduce Congestion on Route 18 Bridge
The current bridge was built in 1935 and is single span, approximately 140-ft. long with a severe skew. The proposed bridge will be approximately 360-ft. long with four 11.6-ft. wide lanes with 5-ft. wide shoulders on each side, two 5.6-ft. wide sidewalks with protective screens and standard vehicle barriers. BRIDGE from page 1
Construction began in the fall of 2017 with a completion of late 2022 scheduled. The budget for the job is $68 million with the bulk being paid by the Federal Highway Administration with the balance from state and local funding.
Partial demolition of the bridge
with complete utility relocation. was completed in August 2019 Route 18 is being widened to improve safety and during a weekend vehicular reduce congestion on the arterial road south of Route shutdown. 3. Route 18 will be widened to four lanes throughout the corridor, two in each direction. The current roadway varies in width and its narrowest width is less than 30 ft. with two vehicle lanes, minimal shoulders and no sidewalks. The proposed roadway consists of four 11.5-ft. travel lanes, two 5-ft. shoulders and two 5.5-ft. sidewalks. Part of the widening includes the construction of sidewalks and shoulder/bicycle lanes along both sides of the roadway. Joseph Gioioso, a P. Gioioso & Sons project manager, said the company is using a Komatsu 360LCi-11 excavator and Komatsu D61PXi-23 dozer and a LinkBelt RTC crane on the job. Joe Rotundi, D&R project manager, said a Caterpillar AP 1000E paver will be used. The current bridge was built in 1935 and is single span, approximately 140-ft. long with a severe skew. The proposed bridge will be approximately 360-ft. long with four 11.6-ft. wide lanes with 5-ft. wide shoulders on each side, two 5.6-ft. wide sidewalks with protective screens and standard vehicle barriers with protective screens and improved horizontal clearance for the trains below. Accelerated bridge construction is being used to complete construction sooner and minimize impact to drivers. Part of the process will be a lateral bridge slide that will move the bridge from a temporary to permanent location with rollers and jacks. The new bridge will be built in a temporary location next to the existing bridge, which will allow drivers to use the new bridge in its temporary location while the existing bridge is being demolished. The new bridge will then be Crews perform tie-back drilling at the Route 18 road widening and bridge reconstruction project in slid into its permanent location. The new bridge is scheduled for completion in August Weymouth and Abington. 2021, according to Chris Evasius, a MassDOT assistant conMassDOT notes it has used ABC on the struction engineer. Quincy/Weymouth Fore River Bridge project in 2017 to The use of Accelerated Bridge Construction technology for the Weymouth/Abington project is the latest in construct the center lift span and float it into place using barges. Self-propelled mobile transports were used, which Massachusetts.
allowed the contractor to walk the span from land directly onto the barges. The moving of the barges was timed to take advantage of the rising tides to lift the span to the proper elevation and it allowed multiple work activities to take place at the same time to lessen disruption to the motoring public. ABC techniques also were used on the BostonCommonwealth Ave. project in 2018. The project involved replacement of the superstructure of the Commonwealth Ave. Bridge over the Massachusetts Turnpike. The work was broken up into two separate seasons using ABC. Prefabricated bridge units were used to construct the superstructure. They consisted of steel girders with precast deck panels that were lifted into place for the bridge deck. The contractor for the Fore River Bridge project was White/Skanska/Koch JV of Framingham, Mass., with a bid amount of $244.6 million. The contractor for the Boston-Commonwealth Ave. project was Walsh Construction Co. of Norwood, Mass., with a bid amount of $81.8 million. In 2008, MassDOT launched the Accelerated Bridge program after the Massachusetts Highway Department and the Department of Conservation and Recreation determined there were 543 structurally deficient bridges in the state with the number expected to climb to almost 700 by 2016. Legislation was passed to reduce the state’s backlog below 450 by 2016 and as of Sept. 1, 2018, 191 projects have been completed with others in construction. “The Accelerated Bridge program represents a monumental and historic investment in Massachusetts bridges,” the organization said. “Over the next eight years, nearly $3 billion in funding will be accelerated to improve the condition of bridges in every corner of the Commonwealth. With plans to repair or replace over 500 bridges, including five megabridge projects [valued at more than $1 billion], this program will greatly reduce the number of structurally deficient bridges in the state system, while creating thousands of construction jobs. To complete this program MassDOT and DCR will rely on the use of innovative and accelerated project development and construction techniques.” CEG
