The Maine Turnpike Authority has initiated a project that will relocate a toll plaza on the Maine Turnpike and expand it into a facility with 15 toll booths, including six E-Z pass center lanes.

GE to Downsize Mass. Headquarters, Reimburse State $87M BOSTON (AP) General Electric will downsize its world headquarters in Boston and will return $87 million that Massachusetts spent as part of an incentives package to lure the company from Connecticut three years ago.

The industrial conglomerate has been restructuring its operations amid sagging profits and other negative developments in recent years.

GE said it was formally dropping plans to build a 12-story office tower on the city’s waterfront that was to be the centerpiece of its new global headquarters, and instead sell that parcel of land along with two older, state-owned buildings that were being refurbished for the company.

Following the sale, the company said it would reimburse MassDevelopment, an independent state agency, for $87 million in “out-of-pocket” expenses, including money spent to purchase the two brick buildings which once housed a candy factory, and other construction and financing costs.

GE plans to lease space in those buildings after the sale for

its permanent headquarters with about 250 workers, down from its original estimate of 800 that it planned to have in the city.

“While changes in the company’s portfolio and operating model will lead to a smaller corporate headquarters, we are fully committed to Boston and proud to call it home,” said Ann Klee, GE’s vice president of Boston development and operations, in a statement.

General Electric, no longer a component of the Dow Jones industrial average, has been shrinking itself since the recession.

In October, the company slashed its quarterly dividend and announced it was restructuring its power business after a larger-than-expected third quarter loss. Earlier that month, the company ousted its then-CEO John Flannery after only about a year on the job and replaced him with Larry Culp, who told investors it had become clear that GE needed to simplify its business structure.

The company’s fourth-quarter revenue of $33.28 billion did exceed Wall Street forecasts.

Massachusetts officials have sought to put the best possible face on GE’s sagging fortunes since trumpeting the January 2015 decision to relocate the company’s world headquarters from Fairfield, Conn., to Boston. The incentives package included up to $120 million offered by the state through grants and other programs and as much as $25 million in property tax relief from the city.

The administration remains “proud that General Electric chose to relocate the company’s world headquarters to Massachusetts and looks forward to GE’s ongoing contribution to the growing innovation economy,” said Elizabeth Guyton, a spokeswoman of Republican Gov. Charlie Baker.

The company has not used the property tax abatement offered by Boston and will be canceling the agreement with the city because it was contingent upon the construction of the office tower and the hiring of up to 800 jobs. 

With this latest project, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany will have invested more than $150 million in infrastructure to advance biopharmaceutical R&D in the state of Massachusetts in recent years, with more than 150 new jobs added to its growing U.S. R&D Hub in Billerica since 2011.

The town of Billerica played a critical role in bringing this latest building expansion project to fruition, working collaboratively with company officials to underscore the benefits of expanding the R&D facility.

When construction is completed in 2021, the building will offer wet labs, office space and a cafeteria for the campus.

Crusher School is designed to give customers the opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment about these machines. They are able to hear first-hand stories and experiences from the people they will call if and when their machines need maintenance or repairs. On Feb., 13, visual examples both on and off the LT106 were provided.

Bruce Gallant, a service manager who has been with Whitney and Son for 24 years, said the purpose of these training sessions is,

“To familiarize the customers in regular maintenance and show functions, what to look for, what to hear; to show them things they didn’t know and reasons why things happen. It will pay off them in the long run.”

All participants watched a video to start the day before splitting into two groups.

Each group went to different stations located throughout the Whitney and Son facility.

Both groups started the lesson in front or on top of the Lokotrack LT106 and leaders explained proper maintenance by using visual aids and signs to look for.

Both Zisk and Wentworth focused their lessons on proper operational practices, mechanical components, maintenance and what steps need to be taken if and when issues arise in the functionality of these machines.

While showing an example of a damaged fly wheel to the class, Wentworth said, “Keep your eyes open. This fly wheel was only found because we were out there installing a new remote on the machine.

While we were there we started poking around. All of these parts were damaged.

They didn’t know what to look for. They didn’t understand it. Today, you guys should understand what you are looking at and if it’s right or wrong by the end of the day. What we can teach you to catch today will save you from a breakdown tomorrow.”

According to Zisk, “It was a good day.

There were a lot of interaction and information given between old and new machine customers. It is a question run school so as we are teaching products and they are near the machine, then they start to understand it all better.”  CEG see WHITNEY page 16

SMHC Announces Transformative Plan to Expand Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) announced plans to significantly enhance and expand the scope of health services it offers in Sanford to better meet the health needs of the local community and of greater York County. The plan calls for investments totaling $34 million to expand, enhance and add a variety of health services identified as critical to the local community. The plan includes construction of a new, modern long-term care center for older adults, the establishment of a short-stay, inpatient behavioral health care unit and general upgrades to the SMHC Medical Center in Sanford, formerly Goodall Hospital. The projects are in addition to more than $10 million of investment that has already been made in the facility’s technology, operations and outpatient services since the merger to form Southern Maine Health Care in 2014.

“Ninety years ago, Sanford opened the doors of its own community hospital. Today, we are proud to announce that we will continue that tradition of caring for our community with a series of projects intended to reinvigorate this campus, create new jobs and provide much-needed health services,” said Nathan Howell, Southern Maine Health Care president. “Our goal is to leverage all of the advantages and value that Southern Maine Health Care and the MaineHealth system offer to benefit our patients in the Sanford area.”

The projects include a $23 million, 94-bed Eldercare Center that will provide skilled nursing, long-term and memory care services; an $11 million, short-stay behavioral health care unit that will be relocated from Biddeford to Sanford more than doubling its capacity; and a series of general campus improvements currently under way that will continue into the spring. Each project will be the product of strong partnerships with experienced health care companies and non-profit organizations and are being made possible, in-part, by the strength of the recently unified MaineHealth.

Each of the projects will serve critical health needs in York County as well as provide new economic benefit to Sanford. “We are adapting our services to meet the needs of our communities, and we must serve those needs in a way that provides the care

OSHA Partnership in Place for R.I. Construction Project OSHA and Dimeo Construction Company have joined in a strategic partnership to promote workplace safety on the General Dynamics Electric Boat Universal Buildings 9A/9B construction project in North Kingstown, R.I.

Announced Feb. 14, the partnership seeks to educate workers, control or eliminate serious hazards, and establish effective safety and health programs for the project, which broke ground in June 2018. It is the largest current construction project in Rhode Island,

consisting of two buildings of 125,000 sq. ft. and 200,000 sq. ft., respectively, that will connect to form one structure, OSHA reported.

The scheduled completion date is Feb. 28, 2020.

The agency’s Strategic Partnership Program allows OSHA to work with employers, employees, professional and trade associations, labor organizations, and other interested stakeholders to improve workers’ safety and health.

The job will be completed in three phases, starting with widening of the highway that will include clearing of trees, blasting of rock, paving and utility construction that involves water, electric and tunnel construction. Phase one also includes constructing the new toll building and an access road and parking area for toll employees.

Phase two includes constructing utilities and intelligent transportation systems in the tunnel, road barrier structures, concrete toll slabs and the footings for canopies inside the cash lanes.

Phase three will include completion of the north and southbound cash plaza; tunnel construction; and placing final surface pavement of the north and southbound cash plazas.

The new plaza will be located at the mile 8.8 site that can facilitate electronic tolling. Jacobs Engineering, the Boston-based design firm, determined that the plaza there would be safer, with less wetland and stream impact and provide good visibility for approaching vehicles. The cost of the project at mile 8.8 is $20 million less than it would be at mile 7.3 and would not displace any homes, with only four houses within 1,000 ft. of the mile 8.8 site compared with 47 near mile 7.3.

LEBANON, N.H. (AP) Dartmouth-Hitchcock officials have announced a $130 million construction project that would include a third inpatient tower at the medical center campus in Lebanon, N.H. The plan includes a 132,000 sq.-ft., 60-bed inpatient tower, along with renovation and expansion of the center's emergency department, and the proposed construction of a parking garage The board of trustees announced the plan at its meeting on Dec. 7.

The board said demand for services at the medical center has risen dramatically over the last several years, resulting in consistently high occupancy of its 396 licensed beds.

The new tower is expected to provide access for the existing, unmet demand of approximately 3,000 inpatient admissions per year.

Groundbreaking is expected in the spring, with completion over three to four years. 
