Maine Biz Calls JCB Teleskids Project ‘Game Changer’
JCB 2TS-7T tracked Teleskid maneuvers material for a road base. The JCB 437 loader not only moves mountains of dirt, but is a key part of Maine Commercial Contracting Services’ snow removal fleet.
The JCB JS160 excavator has proven to be reliable even under the stress of Maine’s extreme digging and temperature conditions. MAINE from page 1
Services is a relatively new business, but our team is made up of tradesmen who have been involved in the industry for decades, some of us over 20 years,” said Small, president and founder. “So, we bring a lot of experience to the table.” The residential market in southeastern Maine has been particularly strong over the past few years, with a lot of high-end property development, and the company’s average customer is homeowners looking to make major property improvements and general contractors. “We provide the excavating and site work for as they prepare for new home builds,” Small said. “We are fully equipped to do commercial work, but the residential market has been what has kept us busy lately. One of the reasons we do so well in this market is
our size and our personalized service and attention to detail with the owner of the property. We are big enough to handle significant sized projects and small enough to give the customer personalized attention that lets him know he is dealing with a company that wants to get the project done right.” Over the course of the past few years, Maine Commercial Contracting has made several investments in JCB machines purchased from Alta Equipment, including a JCB JS160 excavator, a 17-ton class machine; a JCB 3TS-8W Teleskid; a JCB T2S-7T Teleskid, a machine much like the JCB 3TS-8W, but smaller and on tracks; and a JCB 437 183 hp 3.5-yd. loader. “The purchase of the two JCB Teleskid machines has been a real game changer,” Small said. “The telescoping boom adds so much diversity above and beyond what a
An example of lift capacity of the JCB Teleskid.
skid steer with a fixed bucket can offer. “One of the areas where it really shines is loading and unloading our larger dump trucks,” he added. “Without the Teleskid, we would have to have a loader on the site to load the trucks. We have the two different machines, the 3TS-8W for larger projects where confined space is not an issue and the T2S-7T tracked machine is ideal for working in tight quarters as well as conditions where you need the tracks to better navigate versus the wheeled machine.” As is the case with all companies in the construction trades, safety is a big concern for Small and his crew. “It is very important to us that everybody goes home safe and sound every night,” he said. “We really appreciate the people who work for us and want to ensure that everybody is protected at all times.
“Unlike traditional skid steers, the JCB Teleskids feature a side-door entry, meaning your operators do not have to climb across a bucket and boom every time they enter or leave the machine. They enter through a side door just like you would with a loader or an excavator. It’s safer and so much more convenient. Once you’re inside the cab, it is extremely comfortable and designed to give the operator maximum visibility. You can see just about everywhere with virtually no blind spots. It is a dramatic improvement over traditional skid steers.” Another key piece to the Maine Commercial Contracting fleet is its recently purchased JCB 437 183 hp 3.5-yd. loader. So far, it has met or exceeded all of Small’s expectations. “The JCB 437 is an awesome machine,” see MAINE page 10

he said. “It moves a lot of dirt really quickly for us, and in the winter, it is a key snow removal machine. Its versatility has made it a profit center for our fleet. The power is unmatched, the cab is spacious and comfortable, our operators have given us feedback that the visibility is fantastic, the cameras inside the cab have really improved safety, and when maneuvering the traction is there when you need it. It’s a very stable machine.” Small also is a big fan of the JCB JS160 excavator, a 17-ton machine with a maximum dig depth of 20-ft. 7-in. “We use this excavator a lot, particularly on smaller residential projects. It’s also ideal for foundation work,” he said. “For a machine in its weight category, the power and breakout force are impressive. The JS 160 has also proven to be reliable. We have some very cold winter mornings here in Maine and we have had zero issues with cold weather starts. Just like our other JCB machines, the cab design is exceptional. Lots of room, ideally situated safety cameras,
great operator comfort.” Quality products are only part of the formula that keeps contractors happy with a supplier. Service after the sale also is critically important. “One of the reasons that we keep buying JCB products is the service that we get from our dealer, Alta Equipment,” said Small. “They have been right on top of every concern or problem that we have had, and they answer our questions very quickly. They know that we need them to repair equipment immediately and so far, they have met the mark. “Everyone is aware that in today’s climate, parts can be a challenge, and yet so far we have had no parts issues whatsoever,” he added. “Our sales rep, Toby Reynolds, has been fantastic to work with. He is great at navigating the sale process and, most importantly, he is always there for us after the sale. “The bottom line in our business is that up time matters. We cannot afford to have equipment down and coincidentally Alta Equipment’s motto is Up Time Matters. So far, they have lived up to their slogan.” CEG

Crews Begin Building Underwater Supports for $97.5M Bridge The new $97.5 Madawaska-Edmundston International bridge project, linking Maine to Canada’s Province of New Brunswick, is taking shape as crews turn their focus underwater. Night work on the bridge began in September, and since that time workers have constructed a pier across the St. John River and are working on land support. But for now, their primary task is building five 60ft.-tall pier shafts in the river on which the bridge will rest. Already completed are the concrete seals and caps needed to construct the five shafts, said Andrew Lathe of the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT). He added that the structures should be finished later this winter. When they are in use, following the bridge’s late 2023 opening, the concrete substructures are designed to safely hold the bridge for a full century, according to MaineDOT. Construction also is ongoing on land abutments — structures at the end of the bridge that are built to support the lateral pressure of an arch. MaineDOT already is preparing for the thaw at the end of winter and plans to take the construction trestle out of the water on
The new bridge is targeted for completion in 2023. For now, the existing century-old bridge is in use, but can only support no more than five tons.
Feb. 15 to avoid ice jams and flooding, Lathe said. After the ice melts and the river is clear, the trestle will be replaced, and work will continue as usual. The new bridge is targeted for completion in 2023. For now, the existing century-old bridge is in use, but can only support no more than five tons. Independent contractor Reed & Reed Inc., of Woolwich, Maine, and New Brunswickbased Greenfield Construction, along with the Maine and New Brunswick transporta-
tion departments, are collaborating on the project. Accompanying the bridge project is the creation of a new land port of entry in Madawaska. The federal General Services Administration (GSA) completed the footing of most of the structure’s foundation in late October. New Bridge Will Be Longer, Wider, Stronger After almost 100 years in service, the Madawaska bridge was recently rated to be
in poor condition, and efforts to maintain the structure led officials in the United States and Canada to mutually decide a replacement plan needed to be implemented. In October 2017, the 5-ton limit (equivalent to a single passenger vehicle) was posted for the bridge, creating a significant detour for traffic between the two countries. Therefore, any substantial investments to upgrade it would be impractical as it would cost more to renovate the old bridge than to build a new one. A study by MaineDOT, the New Brunswick Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (NBDTI), and the GSA recommended that a new bridge connect the existing border station in Edmundston, NB, to a fully modernized facility in Madawaska. Reed & Reed’s crews are constructing the structure approximately 1,300 ft. upriver of the old bridge at an approximately 45-degree angle. Because of the new alignment, the crossing will be nearly twice the length of the existing one. Additionally, it will feature wider travel lanes, and added shoulders on both sides, including a raised sidewalk on the downstream side of the new bridge. Demolition of the old bridge is scheduled to begin once traffic is moved onto the new river crossing.
Rising Use of Salem Port Spurs Multi-Million-Dollar Dredging PORT from page 1
Hopes are that a multi-million-dollar effort to dredge Salem Harbor will help usher in a transformation of the city’s port. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) recently announced a $14 billion wave of funding for nationwide projects tailored “to strengthen port and waterway supply chains and bolster climate resilience.” That includes more than $20 million coming to Massachusetts and $2.95 million for dredging Salem Harbor. The cash comes as Salem has seen an increasing use of its port. Prior to the pandemic, cruise ships moored to the deepwater berth by Salem Harbor Footprint a few times a year, dropping off hundreds of tourists downtown during tourist season, and triggering U.S. Department of Homeland Security protocols along Derby Street, the Salem News reported. In the future, though, the port also is expected to support offshore wind turbine construction, meaning larger ships — and wind turbine platforms — will be traveling though Salem Harbor far more often, Salem Harbormaster Bill McHugh told the local news source. In part, this is due to the harbor’s complete
lack of “air-draft restrictions,” obstacles over the water like bridges and overhead wires that would otherwise ensnare or prevent the passage of large craft, he explained. “If you anticipate you’re going to be increasing your traffic with these vessels that require the 32-foot controlling [surface to ocean floor] depth, you want to make sure that you maintain that level,” McHugh added. “That’s what this funding will do.” Dredging involves vessels scraping the ocean floor to remove hazards like sand dunes that form because of storms, ocean currents and tides. The planned dredging will be within Salem Harbor, focusing on the federal channel that passes between the Bakers and Misery islands, according to McHugh. “Salem traditionally maintains its depth very well, but as you can imagine, [if] you look at the coastal storms and tidal exchange, we’re dealing with a lot of soft material,” he explained to the Salem News. “It isn’t a tremendous amount that’s filled in, but it’s over certain areas.” Many of the dredging project’s specifics
Hopes are that a multi-million-dollar effort to dredge Salem Harbor will help usher in a transformation of the city’s port. — including a precise timeline — are not yet known. He expects the work to occur at some point in 2022. Leaders Hope Deeper Harbor Boosts Salem’s Economy News of the USACE’s plan to take on the harbor dredging was celebrated by Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll, whose port is suddenly transforming as her 16th year in office begins. “This major infrastructure investment in our community will enable essential dredging work to take place as we prepare Salem’s
deep-water port for the next generation of our maritime economy, from visiting passenger vessels to the growing offshore wind industry,” Driscoll said in a statement. “This substantial infusion of federal dollars will help fuel the continued growth and prosperity of our vibrant waterfront and of our community.” Salem Harbor was not the largest federal cash grant announced for Massachusetts. A combined $9.3 million has been committed to dredging the Essex River and Wareham Harbor, while the Newburyport Harbor also is getting a substantial dig, with $2.5 million pledged from the USACE. Salem resident and U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton expressed his happiness with the infusion of federal funds for the commonwealth when he commented to the News, “with almost $10 million worth of funding for dredging in waterways like Newburyport and Salem harbors, the impact these funds have will be felt by communities across the Sixth District, and I look forward to seeing progress in these projects.”

Massachusetts is on the verge of becoming the first region in the United States to install solar panels on a highway noise barrier, according to a Jan. 25 statement from the Department of Transportation (MassDOT). The agency has signed a letter of intent to build a solar photovoltaic noise barrier, or PVNB, along Interstate 95/MA Route 128 in Lexington. The project involves retrofitting an existing noise barrier on the highway with solar panels. A trio of Massachusetts companies — Hopkinton’s Solect Energy, Ko-Solar in Natick, and Boston-based PowerOptions — have partnered with MassDOT on the initiative. Solect Energy will finance, install, monitor and maintain the project, according to the statement. The Boston Globe reported MassDOT plans to monitor the venture for information about noise impacts, maintenance, cost and community perception to see if it can be expanded to other parts of the state.

Test Project Could Lead to More Solar Ko-Solar has long wanted to put solar panels in places no one really notices, like on industrial building roofs, in parking lots, and, particularly, on highway sound walls. MassDOT vetted approximately two dozen potential sites for the panels before choosing Lexington, the Globe noted. The planned 3,000-ft.-long, 20-ft.-tall noise barrier selected is on the north side of I-95/MA 128 and is constructed of reinforced concrete. According to MassDOT, the retrofit photovoltaic system capacity is expected to be 637.5 kW DC, and 802,000 kWh will be generated annually — the
equivalent of supplying 120 homes per year with electricity. Metal grids will be attached to the sides of 160 concrete sound barriers on the southbound side of I-95, and the solar panels will be mounted at an angle toward the roadway. Solect Energy will own the installation, while MassDOT will buy the power the solar panels generate at a few cents per kilowatt-hour cheaper than the basic utility rate. The state will scrutinize the data from the solar installation for a few years, Electrek reported, to look for several issues. Among them are to ensure that the metal grids do not damage the sound barriers, to learn how weather affects the solar installation, how the solar panels change the effectiveness of the sound barriers and whether any glare occurs from the panels that could impact drivers. The pilot project is a part of the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) program, which offers incentives for residential and commercial solar projects throughout the state. “The installation qualifies for an extra six cents per kilowatt-hour under a provision that gives a boost to projects constructed over an area also used for transportation purposes,” Energy News noted. “In September, the plan also received a $345,000 grant from the state Department of Energy Resources as part of a program that helps state agencies and colleges pursue clean energy projects. The installation of solar to sound walls will not only be the first of its kind in the United States, but MassDOT noted in January that it is set to be the “first of its kind in the Western Hemisphere.” Other countries, such as Germany and Australia, already attach solar panels to highway sound barriers.
