Operations to rebuild the Belden G. Bly Drawbridge, a $99.3 million Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) project awarded to SPS New England Inc., are proceeding.
The drawbridge, formerly known as the Fox Hill Drawbridge and renamed in 1985 to honor a former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, carried traffic on Route 107 (Salem Turnpike/Western Avenue) over the Saugus River, linking the municipalities of Saugus and Lynn, north of Boston. It was closed to traffic see BRIDGE page 10

MassDOT, Local, State Leaders Fete New Municipal Grant Programs Surrounded by lines of snow clearing apparatus, approximately 30 people gathered Jan. 18 inside the Anthony Colonna Public Works Building in Framingham to celebrate the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s upcoming municipal grant programs — some with upcoming application due dates. Throughout the state, millions of dollars have been doled out for new public spaces like sidewalks and streets, as well as for improving or maintaining existing infrastructure. “Municipal programs have always been a lifeline for cities and towns in Massachusetts, which the Baker-Polito administration has expanded dramatically,” noted Jonathan
Gulliver, MassDOT’s highway administrator. Gulliver said what began as a single program has expanded to five, resulting in a “$178 million investment” in the state. MetroWest Daily News in Framingham reported that among the attendees at the event were Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito; Cassandra Gascon, the state’s community grants program administrator; Framingham Mayor Charlie Sisitsky; City Councilor-at-Large Janet Leombruno; and Rep. Maria Robinson and Rep. Jack Patrick Lewis of the Massachusetts see GRANTS page 4
