The Maine Turnpike Authority will spend approximately $14 million to replace the Cummings Road Bridge over the Maine Turnpike (I-95) in Scarborough with a three-span steel girder bridge in a project that will demolish the existing bridge while maintaining traffic throughout the project. The

Slatersville Stone Arch Bridge Reopens in North Smithfield Peter Alviti Jr., Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) director, joined with state and local officials in North Smithfield to celebrate the reopening of the historic Slatersville Stone Arch Bridge. The bridge reopened several months ahead of its originally projected schedule, and overall the project is on track to finish in the 2019 construction season.

The bridge, part of the Slatersville Historic District, is the oldest documented masonry bridge in Rhode Island, dating back to 1855. Deemed structurallydeficient since 2007, large trucks were not permitted to cross it. It was in such an advance state of deterioration that five years ago RIDOT had to close half the bridge with only one lane of traffic allowed to cross the bridge at a time, The Slatersville Stone Arch Bridge reopened several months ahead of its originally projected schedule, and overall the project is causing traffic delays in the village. on track to finish in the 2019 construction season.

PUMA Establishes New North American Headquarters As part of its growth, retention and recruitment strategy, sports company PUMA North America Inc. announced plans to establish a new North American headquarters in Somerville, Mass., in 2021.

The new headquarters will bring together two PUMA offices, currently based in Boston and Westford.

“We’re excited to bring together our talented North American employees in Somerville, a diverse, vibrant city that reflects our values and culture, and will allow us to retain and recruit the best talent across our front and back-end operations,” said Bob Philion, president and CEO of PUMA North America. “This new headquarters will allow us to better collaborate, foster diversity of thought, creativity and innovation, and have fun while doing it.”

The new headquarters, located at 455 Grand Union Blvd., in Somerville, provides the company with five floors of office space totaling 150,000 sq. ft. PUMA intends to have approximately 550 positions at the location once the move is complete, representing a more than 20 percent growth of its workforce.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation’s (Department) Office of Engineering is developing plans for the construction of a new repair facility on the site of the existing repair facility on Federal Road in Brookfield. The purpose of this project is to replace the existing functionally obsolete repair facility.

The project involves the construction of a new building consisting of a 15,000 sq.ft. bay area and a 6,000 sq.-ft. office area, and will include operational areas for vehicle repair, a materials storage stockroom, private office areas, and supporting office spaces. The existing repair facility will be converted to cold storage.

Corresponding site improvements will include removal of a cold storage building, motor fuel island and underground tanks, installation of motor fuel aboveground storage tanks, motor fuel island, new pave-

ment where necessary, site drainage system improvements and connection to utilities.

The present schedule indicates that final design plans will be available in September 2019. The project will be state funded.

It is the Department’s policy to keep the public informed when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share their concerns with the Department to assist in the project’s development. If there is adequate interest, an informational meeting will be conducted.

At this time, it is not anticipated that a formal public hearing will be necessary.

MassDOT Chooses Design for Allston Multimodal Project Stephanie Pollack, Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) secretary and CEO, announced she has selected the “Highway At-Grade Hybrid With Elevated Soldiers Field Road” preferred alternative design for the Allston Multimodal Project when the replacement of the I-90 Allston Viaduct begins.

In this design, I-90 travel lanes will be rebuilt at-grade and travel lanes for a section of Soldiers Field Road will be built on a new viaduct, while accommodating potential future pedestrian and bicycle lanes. Pollack also has directed the Allston Multimodal Project team to begin to develop a Final Environmental Impact report for the project based on the design and to reassess the phasing of the project.

“After evaluating the extraordinary recent work of the Independent Review Team, studying the idea to place all transportation elements atgrade, considering other hybrid proposals, and weighing valuable stakeholder and public input, I have selected the Highway At-Grade Hybrid With Elevated Soldiers Field Road Preferred Alternative for the so-called ‘throat’ portion of the project,” said Pollack. “While every proposed design has its advantages and disadvantages, I believe this Hybrid can be permitted expeditiously, best balances the present-day and future mobility needs of all users, and protects and enhances as best as possible the natural and historic resources and public realm of the Charles River Basin and neighboring Allston community.”

MassDOT has been conducting an independent review of the “throat” portion of the project, which is the relatively narrow area at the eastern end of the larger Allston Multimodal Project site. The throat area is bordered to the north by the Charles River, to the south by the Boston University (BU) campus, to the east by the BU and Commonwealth Avenue bridges, and to the west by Harry Agganis Way. The written decision issued Jan. 4, explains that the Hybrid option was chosen because putting a section of Soldiers Field Road on a viaduct will: • Keep infrastructure out of the Charles River and away from the river bank; • create more parkland and create room to separate pedestrians and cyclists on the Paul Dudley White Path; • make possible a north-south bicycle and pedestrian connection between the Allston neighborhood and the Charles River parks and paths near Harry Agganis Way; • meet the needs of drivers using I-90 and Soldiers Field Road, by allowing for breakdown lanes on I-90 which will benefit vehi-

CPM Constructors Leads $14M Bridge Project in Maine BRIDGE from page 1

Andy Kittredge, vice president of CPM Constructors, said the job is a two-phase project that will ultimately widen the bridge and add two new lanes of traffic on the bridge to the south.

“We’ll tear down the old bridge and connect the two phases of the bridge. Demolition of the old bridge will take place late this year before phase two begins,” said Kittredge.

Half of the new bridge will be built during phase one of the project before the existing bridge is demolished and the second half of the new bridge is built in phase two. Concrete will be poured to connect the two portions of the bridge.

Kittredge said typical bridge construction equipment will be used, including a 110-ton crane; mid-size loader; a boring rig; and a concrete mobile pump. Wick drain and geotech monitoring instruments will be used for the initial phase of the project.

It is anticipated that the surcharge will have to remain in place for six months to establish the required amount of settlement prior to removing the surcharge and installing the lightweight geofoam.

Gilbane Building Company has announced the promotion of Mike O’Brien to business unit leader of its Massachusetts and Northern New England offices. A 25year construction industry veteran, O’Brien most recently served as vice president and operations manager of the region. O’Brien began his career at Gilbane in 1993 when he worked on the construction of the new TF Green Airport in Warwick, R.I. After relocating to North Carolina for a twoyear assignment, O’Brien returned to New England to deliver projects for several highprofile clients such as Fidelity Investments,

State Street Bank and Pfizer. After assuming the role of operations manager in 2009, he provided leadership oversight to teams on some of Gilbane’s largest projects in Massachusetts, including DCAMM’s Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals’ new biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Norton, Mass.
