Scrap Metal Business Relies On Atlas Material Handlers

An operator uses an Atlas 300 MH material handler to move scrap metal at Charleston Steel & Metal Co.’s facility in North Charleston, S.C.

Founded in 1893, Charleston Steel & Metal Co. has a long history in the Charleston, S.C., area.

Horse-drawn wagons originally delivered scrap metal to founder Samuel Steinberg’s backyard on King Street. The business has been passed down through four generations and continues to be family owned and operated.

Currently, Samuel’s grandson Bernard Steinberg is the CEO of the scrap recycling facility in North Charleston, and Samuel’s great-grandson Jonathan Steinberg is the president.

“Our facility takes in recyclable steel, copper and aluminum,” said Operations Manager Michael Hardie. “We sort it, cut it, and then we send it back to the mills where they melt it down and start the recycling process over again. We have a streamlined process and run our operation to be as efficient as possible.” To sort material, Charleston Steel & Metal Co. utilizes two Atlas 300 MH material handlers and an Atlas 350 MH material handler. The Atlas 300 MH features a 47-ft.-2-in. reach, while the Atlas 350 MH provides a 59-ft.-9in. reach. The extendable cab space on all three machines allows operators to safely move about the scrap yard and handle the diverse metals on-site.

“We added the Atlas 300 MH two years ago, and it’s been dependable,” said Hardie. “There’s been minimal downtime with the machine. That enticed us to add the second 300 and a 350 machine.

“We use all three machines for various purposes,” said Hardie. “Primarily they’re used to load and unload any trucks that arrive on-site. We also use them to load scrap into shears that cut the steel down to smaller sizes, as well as general cleanup around the yard.”

Local Service Important

When looking for a new material handler, finding a dealer with local service was important. Charleston Steel & Metal Co. chose to partner with Linder Industrial

In an industry like this, if we’re not producing steel to go to the scrap mill, we’re losing money. Linder does a good job of servicing our machines to maximize uptime and keep us profitable.” (Reprinted with permission from CPI-Linder Link Magazine.) 

TOMRA Recycling has combined its AUTOSORT technology with its deep learning-based sorting add-on, GAIN, to create a solution that can distinguish between and sort different types of wood-based materials, significantly enhancing customers’ sorting and manufacturing processes.

Non-processed wood.

Sensor-based sorting specialist, TOMRA Recycling, has further strengthened its offering for the global wood recycling sector by using deep learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, in wood recycling applications.

The company has combined its AUTOSORT technology with its deep learning-based sorting add-on, GAIN, to create a solution that can distinguish between and sort different types of woodbased materials, significantly enhancing customers’ sorting and manufacturing processes.

The primary application for TOMRA Recycling’s new solution is sorting Wood A — non-processed wood — from Wood B — processed wood products such as MDF (medium-density fiberboard), HDF (high-density fiberboard), oriented strand board (OSB) and chipboard.

TOMRA Recycling has been a frontrunner in the global wood recycling sector for more than 10 years. The company’s X-TRACT solution quickly became popular with chipboard manufacturers to produce a clean recycled woodchip fraction by sorting and separating out the inert material (glass, stones, ceramics, etc.) and metals. Once the XTRACT unit has removed these impurities, the recovered woodchip is of sufficiently high quality to be used in the production of standard chipboards, according to the company.

Achieving Higher Purity Levels

In recent years, however, TOMRA Recycling has been approached by an increasing number of customers who are looking to use recycled wood of a much higher purity level in their production processes. To achieve these specific purity requirements, in addition to removing the inert material and metals in the infeed stream, other impurities including engineered wood composites as well as polymers, would

have to be removed.

As these materials are not distinguishable using x-ray technology, the X-TRACT unit was unsuited to this sorting task. Determined to help these customers and recognizing a potential gap in the market for a solution which would allow companies in the wood recycling sector to optimize their wood sorting processes, TOMRA Recycling’s deep learning experts developed an application that combines TOMRA’s AUTOSORT unit with its deep learning-based sorting add-on, GAIN.

TOMRA’s Wood A vs Wood B application uses deep learning technology to sort and extract impurities that couldn’t previously be detected, making it possible for the first time to detect, analyze and sort every different wood type, therefore cleaning up the real wood fraction.

TOMRA is the first company in the world to use deep learning technology to detect and separate different wood types, targeting Wood B (processed wood composites) as impurities to leave a clean Wood A fraction (nonprocessed wood), or, depending on customers’ requirement, producing individual high purity engineered wood composite fractions out of the infeed stream, the company said.

Philipp Knopp, product manager at TOMRA Recycling, said: “Wood recycling is a fast-evolving market, with increasingly stringent legislation being introduced in a number of regions globally to move towards a more circular economy model. Our AUTOSORT with GAIN solution uses deep learning technology to create a robust and flexible solution, which we are confident will be welcomed by wood goods producers across to globe. It will also enable our customers to future-proof their operations as they will be better equipped to adapt and react to any future changes in the global wood recycling market such as new legislation. We are delighted to be the first in the market to offer this artificial intelligence-based solution.”

Lake Erie Portable Screeners, manufacturer of Pitbull portable material processing equipment, announced the debut of its new Pitbull PB127 static grizzly. The designation references the 12-ft. wide by 7-ft. deep by 7ft. 10-in. high overall dimensions of the new grizzly.

The main frame is constructed of rugged fully welded 3-in. square structural tube steel with a 3/8-in. wall thickness. The new PB127 bridges the gap between the company’s smaller PB86, PB106 static grizzlies and its largest static grizzly, the PB148, for a total of four grizzly size options.

The PB127 Static Grizzly is designed to provide years of service handling the toughest material — from rocks to demolition rubble. Applications include work on construction and demolition sites, as well as landscape and municipal work.

The PB127 Static Grizzly features easilyadjustable, bolt-on culling bars that are factory set standard at 4-in. minus spacing, which may be changed to accommodate different material sizes. Additional bars may be added to provide a minimum of approximately 1-in. spacing, or bars may be removed to facilitate screening of larger materials.

The PB127 comes with heavy duty “D” rings for safe and efficient loading and unloading. Purpose designed with a lower profile than its PB148 sibling, the PB127’s size makes it transportable on a standard flatbed truck. The operating weight of the standard grizzly is 4,905 lbs. and is compatThe PB127 Static Grizzly is designed to provide years of service handling the toughest material — from rocks to demolition rubble. ible with any material handler capable of minimum 7-ft. 10-in. dump height. Engineered and manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Lake City, Pa., the PB127 adds to the company’s lineup of heavy-duty grizzlies, portable screeners, conveyors and feeders. The new PB127 is scheduled to be available for delivery this winter. For more information, visit pitbullscreeners.com.  CEG
