The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is nearing the end of a full platform reconstruction and major station improvements to the six Blue and Yellow Metrorail line stations south of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Stations involved are Braddock Road, King Street-Old Town, Eisenhower Avenue, Huntington, Van Dorn Street, and FranconiaSpringfield. Local bus services are available, and Metro also has an extensive network of free shuttles to accommodate customers at all six of the closed stations. This phase is part of Metro’s three-year Platform Improvement Project that will com-
pletely reconstruct the outdoor platforms at 20 Metrorail stations. The improvements will reportedly make platforms safer and more accessible for customers with disabilities, while also addressing safety concerns and longstanding structural issues. According to Ian Jannetta, spokesperson for the WMATA, the affected stations closed on see METRO page 90

peting in the final round of the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE, is hoping to win $7.5 million for demonstrating the most practical technology for turning carbon dioxide emissions into a useful end product. Whoever wins the competition in 2020, the world has already won, due to the team’s innovative solution to the excesses of CO2 produced by power
plants and other heavy industry plants. The UCLA team plans to turn carbon dioxide from flue gas — the exhaust gases from a coal-burning power plant — into pre-fabricated concrete blocks called “CO2Concrete,” a trademarked name. The goal is to produce up
to 10 tons of the product each day. The blocks will then be used in demonstration construction projects. This innovative process takes CO2 from coal-burning power plants and heavy industry see CONCRETE page 98
