A P&H 4800XPC electric rope shovel operates in Canada.
To provide customers up to 6 percent improvement in productivity compared to DC-powered models, Komatsu is now offering all of its P&H electric rope shovels as AC-powered machines going forward. The production improvement gains are measured by comparing machine performance data. Furthermore, several Komatsu customers have reported that they can regularly achieve higher productivity with the company’s AC models.
Working with its customers to better meet the needs of the evolving mining market, Komatsu reported the following advantages of AC machines over DC machines: • Improved productivity: faster cycle times, no transfer-to-propel delay • Less power used: higher efficiencies with AC motors and power converters result in lower electricity (kilowatt hour) usage per ton moved for a more sustainable product offering for today’s mines. With increased productivity and availability, the AC platform is consistently shown to be a higherperforming machine. • Lower maintenance and repair cost: reduction in parts/components costs (e.g. motors — no brush inspections or changeouts, no commutator stoning or skimming), and a reduction in labor cost • Increased availability: field observed mechanical availability increase of one to two percent. This increase is primarily driven by increased MTBF (mean time between failure) of the electrical system. AC motors and drives require fewer static maintenance checks, resulting in more efficient planned maintenance, and an overall improvement in maintenance labor ratio
Now that AC models are available in all size segments for customers, Komatsu will focus its OEM production and development efforts on the higher-performing AC line of electric rope shovels. The company will continue its global support of the existing DC shovel market, however, providing customers around the world with innovative service, parts, technology advancement and all aftermarket services.
Where possible and supported by DC technology, product upgrades, including Centurion upgrades, will continue to be provided for the more than 400 DC-powered Komatsu shovels in the field.
“With over 100 P&H AC shovels operating globally, we are confident in our shift to the AC shovel platform,” said Brian Fox, VP Mining Products, Komatsu Mining. “However, we remain fully committed to working with our customers to keep their existing P&H DC shovels running far into the future.”

EVOLUTION OF INNOVATION

Innovative details, safety of the operator, simple handling - with optimal performance values at the same time. This is what KLEEMANN crushing and screening plants represent. The technical know-how and detailed knowledge of the technology is transferred directly to production when working together as a team.
MB Jaw Crusher Bucket Solves Rebar Issue for Contractors
There’s always been a weak point in the demolition and redevelopment industry when it comes to processing reinforced materials.
When it comes to recovering reinforced material, companies have been forced to (reluctantly) come to terms with the limitations of the machines they own. An MB Crusher customer, who owns job sites all over Europe, summarized a common problem: “Costs and downtime soar when it comes to reinforced materials. It’s a wellknown fact the problem comes from the iron, and when it’s processed by machinery, it typically cuts the conveyor belt, causing downtime for the job.”
How do you turn this weakness into a strength? By installing one of MB’s jaw crusher bucket to the existing on the carrier machine on the job site and crush the reinforced material down to the desired output size.
The rebar simply comes out along with the crushed material. The rebar’s separated from the aggregates using the 24V iron separator, a device that’s installed on MB’s unit and operated directly from the excavator cab.
From southern Brescia in northern Italy, the customer said, “After trying every way to process the gratings with a track mounted crusher on site, we introduced the BF90.3 crusher bucket into our fleet, and we crushed the gratings that came from our demolishing some pigsties. We didn’t have any problems processing the iron, and therefore had no downtime or hiccups that would have slowed down the job, something we would have run into with the other crushers.”
Moving to the heart of the city in southern France there’s a construction site where a customer needed to demolish a building from the 1930s to create a new residential complex with 26 units.
In this case, using MB Crusher’s BF90.3 crusher bucket and installing it on a Liebherr 924 excavator, made it possible to crush all of the reinforced material, separating it from the rebar and reusing the new aggregates for the parking lot’s foundation.
The site manager said: “An excellent economic and environmental benefit that speeds up the job: we quickly got rid of the iron without an issue.”
MB Crusher’s entire range of crusher buckets represents a decisive, quick and economical way to process reinforced materials directly on site with the machine you own.
Reinforced concrete, sleepers, light poles, gratings; the list goes on and there are several companies that have chosen to process them with MB Crusher’s units. Soon, there will be an opportunity to simplify difficult jobs across five continents.

Page 66 • January 5, 2022 • www.constructionequipmentguide.com • Recycling Section • Construction Equipment Guide Cat MH3026 Material Handler Offers Higher Performance, Lower Costs
Purpose built for reliable and efficient operation in waste and scrap metal applications, the new Cat MH3026 material handler design provides enhanced performance, low operating costs and improved operator efficiency.
The advanced electrohydraulic system optimizes the balance of power and efficiency, improving cycle times to handle more material in the same amount of time, improving profit potential, according to the manufacturer.
These Next Generation material handlers are powered by the Cat C7.1 engine, capable of operating on up to B20 biodiesel. Meeting U.S. EPA Tier IV Final emission standards, the engine’s maintenance-free aftertreatment system lowers operating costs and maximizes machine uptime.
The choice between power and economy modes fine-tunes power requirements to the task at hand, offering up to 10 percent lower fuel usage than previous models without sacrificing machine performance.
New front linkage offerings provide up to 42 ft. 8 in. reach allowing operators to move more material without repositioning the machine. The MH3026 also offers up to 20 percent greater swing torque to move more material faster.
Heavy lift mode boosts lifting capacities to more efficiently handle heavy loads. Allowing the boom to freely travel up and down without using pump flow, the standard SmartBoom allows the operator to focus on grapple control and have a smoother, more fuel efficient, cycle.
A range of attachments and new reach options are available for varied applications to increase operating flexibility. Technology
Now standard technologies on the Cat MH3026 material handler elevate operating protection. E-fence prevents the machine from moving outside operator defined parameters while Cab Avoidance helps the operator by preventing contact between the attachment and cab. By requiring a PIN code to start the engine, the new Operator ID inhibits the machine from unauthorized operation.
Designed for Safe Operation
Large tempered glass windows with small pillars on the reengineered cab design enhance all-around visibility and operating safety. Standard right-side and rearview cameras, upgradable to 360-degree vision, display video feed on the large in-cab touchscreen monitor to further enhance work area visibility. Thicker, high-impact and impact-resistant windshields and roof windows meet EN356, P8B and P5A standards.
A ground-level shutoff switch stops all fuel to the engine and shuts down the machine. Preventing reverse oil flow in the event of an unexpected loss of hydraulic pressure, standard boom and stick lowering check valves keep the front linkage securely in place.
All daily maintenance points are quickly accessed from
ground level, while a new service platform with steps provides easy, safe and quick access to the upper service area.
Reimagined Comfort
Offering a choice between deluxe and premium designs, the new Next Generation cab features a joystick steering option, eliminating the steering column to improve forward visibility, legroom and ease of cab entry. Further facilitating cab entry and exit, the left-hand console tilts up. All controls
New front linkage offerings provide up to 42 ft. 8 in. reach allowing operators to move more material without repositioning the machine. The MH3026 also offers up to 20 percent greater swing torque to move more material faster.
are conveniently positioned in front of and within easy reach of the operator to avoid unnecessary movements. A larger, 10-in. high-resolution touchscreen monitor with jog-dial offers easy navigation of the intuitive operator controls. Different machine operators can store their specific joystick and preferred power mode settings, and the machine automatically recalls the settings based on the Operator ID. The MH3026 offers a maximum cab height of 18 ft. 10in. to improve loading and material handling visibility.
Superior Serviceability
Standard Product Link captures critical operating data such as location, hours, fuel usage, productivity, idle time, maintenance alerts and fault codes, which can be remotely accessed and tracked to boost fleet management efficiency. Lasting 50 percent longer than previous designs, the new hydraulic oil filter improves filtration and increases change intervals to 3,000 operating hours. New anti-drain valves keep the hydraulic oil clean during filter replacement. All engine filters feature a coordinated 1,000-operating-hour change interval, and the new air intake filter with precleaner lasts up to 1,000 hours to reduce maintenance requirements. Operators conveniently track filter life and maintenance intervals on the in-cab high-resolution monitor. Eliminating the need for operator interaction, the high-efficiency cooling fan features a standard automatic reverse function to keep the cores clean, maximizing machine uptime. An optional vibrating cooling screen activates during reverse fan operation to further improve dust and debris removal. For more information, visit www.cat.com.
