CTL from page 93 loaders without independent torsion axles engage the bucket, the front part of the tracks can lift off of the ground, reducing traction by leaving only the back end of the tracks to push the loader.

Independent torsion axles in that same situation will push the tracks downward to maintain maximum ground contact. The same thing happens when the track flexes over small obstacles.

Purpose-built track loaders also feature optimal weight distributions compared to models converted from skid steers. Loaders converted from skid steers are often too back heavy, affecting stability on slopes and reducing overall performance. The back of a back-heavy machine can sink and get stuck in deep snow as well as reduce traction and pushing force on ice because of uneven weight distribution.

Look for a track loader with a 50-50 weight balance that spreads the machine’s weight evenly and allows for greater traction and pushing power.

Track bogie wheels also play a role in weight distribution and therefore traction in snow. Most track loaders are only feature a handful of bogie wheels in contact with the ground. Consider choosing a purpose-built track loader, such as some all-rubber track models, which can feature as many as four times more ground contact points than steel-embedded models.

The combination of even weight distribution and increased track surface area improves flotation and provides the ability to virtually drive on top of the snow — similar to the concept of snowshoes — while a higher ground pressure is more likely to sink and get stuck. Ground pressure on a mid-sized all-rubber track machine, for example, can be about 4 psi while a similarly sized steel-embedded rubber track machine may be 5.5 psi.

Loaders with a low ground pressure can even drive up snow piles, giving operators the ability to stack snow higher before needing to start a new pile.

Finally, choosing a loader with high ground clearance has year-round benefits. The greater the distance between the bottom of the machine and the ground, the less likely it is to get hung up on snow or other obstacles. It can also improve speed by reducing belly drag. Some purpose-built compact track loaders achieve ground clearances as high as 15 in., almost double that of other models.

Single-rail, open-undercarriage style compact track loader’s leave most components exposed, creating a self-cleaning undercarriage where snow naturally falls out rather than getting trapped and freezing to components. Factors to Consider

Contractors should think about what machine characteristics fit their most common jobs.

Overall machine size is a big consideration. Many jobs would be suited to a mid-sized model, but sidewalks and alleyways may call for some of the industry’s smallest sit-in compact track loaders.

Small loaders allow access to tight areas that may otherwise have required manual shoveling, snow blowers or other open-air equipment. This can improve productivity and allow contractors to move to the next job faster.

Larger spaces such as parking lots naturally call for the largest track loaders. Also look at lift height and whether the desired loader will be able to load dump trucks.

Take speed into account for a machine that will allow faster job completion. The fastest track loaders on the market use internal drive sprockets with replaceable steel rollers that fit with molded rubber lugs to move all-rubber tracks. The system greatly reduces friction compared to steel on steel designs seen in many loaders, and therefore improves speed. It also eliminates direct wear between rollers and track lugs. Plus, individually replaceable sleeves mean operators don’t need to change out the entire sprocket when rollers are worn down.

see CTL page 98

A higher number of track bogie wheels as well as wider and longer tracks improves weight distribution and therefore traction in snow. Most track loaders only feature a handful of bogie wheels in contact with the ground, as seen in the right example in the graphic. Some all-rubber track machines feature many more ground contact points than steel-embedded models, as seen in the left example.

AIRPORT from page 92 McMichael. “We have a high volume of truck traffic on our interstates and a high demand for our cargo operations here at the airport. We also are a hub for other airports and their cargo and passengers. We are trying to do all we can here at Indianapolis International to make sure everyone around us has the services so they can maintain and grow their operations.”

Walsh purchased a GOMACO GP 4 paver from Finkbiner Equipment for the paving. This paver enabled workers to make 37-ft.-wide passes and pave the 150-ft.-wide runways in just four passes. Fewer passes meant fewer joints and fewer places for cracks to develop in the pavement. The new equipment enabled the team often to pour 4,000 cu. yds. in a day.

While Walsh continued working on Runway 5-23L, workers needed to keep access open to the main runway for the airline’s partners. Indianapolis is the national hub for FedEx. The construction phasing ensured that taxiways were always open to facilitate FedEx flights during construction.

Environmentally Friendly

In addition to the extraordinary CO2 capture, the airport construction has taken additional steps that are environmentally friendly.

“Our contractors have crushed the old concrete runway on site and used it as a base layer for the new construction,” said McMichael. “Securing sufficient trucking is difficult these days, so we are saving many truckloads by not hauling in virgin aggregate for the runway base. We also are using the asphalt millings to reinforce some of our existing service roads.”

Workers have installed LED lighting, which is more energy efficient than the old lighting.

Instead of replacing all the drainage pipe, a unique process called cure in place pipe (CIPP) is being utilized which provides a new inner liner in the drainage pipe. When the CIPP process is completed all pipe joints are eliminated and the design life of the existing drainage system is greatly extended. Many times, “green” construction activities have a positive impact on the bottom line of the project. In other instances, the project team sees them as the right thing to do.

“I don’t believe the carbon capture technology had been used much in connection with airfields,” said McMichael. “I understand that it had been used to put CO2 into concrete flooring at warehouses for Amazon, Walmart and other places. We worked with the Tech Center people at the FAA to do a pavement design that used this concept.

“For our project, we were able to take the CO2 from an industrial source and put it into the concrete,” said McMichael. “Then it is no longer an emission, and it doesn’t affect the concrete. It was a win-win-win for us, for local people and for the environment.” 

During the paving operations on Runway 5-23L and taxiway D, Walsh inserted the CO2 captured at an onsite concrete batch plant into the concrete with no apparent effects.

Finkbiner Equipment Helps Walsh Choose Right Machine

Matt Filipowski, senior project manager of Walsh Construction, oversees the project at Indianapolis Airport. According to the contract, specifications required paving at 37.5 ft. wide.

“The airport contract documents specified that we needed to pave at 37.5 feet wide and the GP 4 paver was the only GOMACO paver with that capability,” said Filipowski. “The airport authority wanted to minimize longitudinal construction joints in the runway pavement to maximize the pavement design life and the GP-4 enabled us to meet that 37.5-foot paving width requirement.”

GOMACO’s GP 4 paves up to 40 ft. and is available in two tracks or four tracks. Equipped with G+, the unit interfaces with stringline or 3D machine guidance. It is equipped with a telescoping spreader/plow to spread concrete evenly.

Michael Bailey, senior superintendent of Walsh Construction, contacted Finkbiner Equipment Company, Walsh’s long-time equipment dealer, for help in buying the machine.

“They have been our GOMACO dealer for more than 25 years and are reliable for service calls and parts orders,” said Bailey. “Andy Bazan and his team at Finkbiner have always been available to us after hours and on weekends if the need arises.”

Brad Barkema, district sales manager of GOMACO, worked very closely with Walsh and Finkbiner Equipment to order the right machine for this project.

“This collaborative effort was crucial to ensure that we received a machine that would not only work for this project, but exceed expectations,” said Bailey.

The GOMACO GP-4 paver, equipped with the 5400 series pan, weighs in at approximately 200,000 lbs.

“This paving setup enabled us to exceed the FAA P-501 smoothness requirement specification for the 22-inch-thick concrete pavement on the runway,” said Filipowski. “Our highest production achieved to date was more than 4,700 cubic yards of concrete placed in a single shift. A typical concrete pour on the runway averaged approximately 4,000 cubic yards of concrete. We can use the GP-4 paver on many other paving projects, including highway jobs with dual-lane paving. It is also capable of paving three lanes wide.”

Finkbiner assisted Walsh with the initial setup of the paver as well as the calibration of stringless paving system.

“The paver has performed well,” said Bailey. “By having the ability to pave 37.5 inches wide, we were able to reduce the number of longitudinal construction joints, which results in less maintenance and extended lifespan of the concrete pavement. We’ve had a few small issues with the GP 4 that Andy has gone above and beyond to help resolve.”  CEG

MAINTENANCE from page 1

“Perhaps nothing is so important and so often overlooked in machinery maintenance as fluid levels,” said Indianapolis, Ind.-based Caterpillar dealer McAllister Machinery. “Analyzing engine oil, fuel, coolant and hydraulic fluid tells an internal tale describing the health of your machine.”

These analyses also are indicators of maintenance effectiveness and predictors of potential failures, believes the company.

Why, How of Fluid Analysis

Fluid analysis detects problems early, so they can be repaired before they become major failures, said McAllister.

The process helps in scheduling machine downtime and in developing a complete service history for a machine. It improves the opportunity to get top dollar for used machines when the decision is made to offload older rigs through resale or trade-in.

“For maximum protection, you need oil sampling for all major oil-lubricated systems and coolant sampling for your cooling systems,” advised McAllister. “By pinpointing fluid troubles early, you can avoid shutdowns for unplanned repairs and even catastrophic failures.”

Hand in hand with fluid maintenance goes monitoring equipment condition. It should be an overall part of a contractor’s preventive maintenance plan, said the Caterpillar dealer.

A dedicated program of equipment condition monitoring helps prevent breakdowns and unnecessary repair costs that can rob a company of efficiency and profit.

McAllister’s list of key elements involved in the monitoring process includes advanced fluid diagnostic capabilities that allow the equipment manager to better assess the condition of a rig.

“Regular care and preventive maintenance of machines are priorities for heavy equipment,” said McAllister. “That includes routine machinery maintenance you do as the owner as well as outsourced maintenance with assistance by equipment professionals.”

Set Maintenance Schedule

An unexpected breakdown, forcing unscheduled maintenance, can be a huge crimp in a project schedule, especially if the machine plays a major role on the job site.

Poor equipment productivity due to downtime and neglect is a leading contributor to increases in unexpected project costs, believes Phillips66 Lubricants.

Approximately 800 to 900 productive hours annually is what a contractor can expect from a piece of equipment, according to the company, based in Houston, Texas.

“Based on a 40-hour work week that translates at best to a productivity rate of only 62 percent,” Phillips said. “That means most pieces of heavy equipment have a productivity rate improvement window of nearly 40 percent, which can have a big impact” on the bottom line.

Phillips believes one of the easiest and most impactful ways to improve productivity is to adhere to a preventive maintenance schedule for each piece of equipment.

At the same time, a dedicated, fleet-wide preventive maintenance program reduces downtime and increases revenue.

“Preventive maintenance occurs on a predetermined schedule, regardless of whether the equipment shows problems operating or not,” according to Phillips. “It allows you to identify and address any defects before they can evolve into more expensive and largescale issues.”

Though maintenance tasks will be dictated by an equipment manufacturer’s recommendations and the vehicle itself, most rigs have engines that require similar checks, including: ï Engine oil: Use top quality engine oil and other lubricants, advised Phillips66.

“Although engine oil represents just a small fraction of your total maintenance costs, it can have a big impact on your bottom line.”

Skimping on quality or selecting the wrong type of engine oil can lead to more serious issues, costly repairs, longer downtime and lower productivity later on.

“Find the right high-quality oil for your vehicles and keep your equipment running smoothly.” ï Fluid levels: Check the coolant, transmission, brake, fuel and other fluid levels, advised the company. Frequent drops in fluids indicate a leak that must be identified and repaired.

“As with engine oil, make sure you are using correct type of high-quality fluids to prevent costly repairs.”

Among Phillips’ tips for extending the life of heavy equipment is to regularly maintain and service your machines with high-quality lubricants.

“Regularly inspecting and changing the oil and other lubricants is the most important part of preventative maintenance,” said the company.

Because the demands put on a lubricant vary greatly with different components and operating conditions, lubricants have significantly different physical and chemical characteristics.

That’s another reason consistent use of the correct oil maximizes the life and performance of equipment. “Don’t top off with an incorrect oil for convenience,” said Phillips.

But using the right amount of lubricant matters too. Too little can increase the risk of friction and equipment wear, while too much can build up and cause performance issues.

Prevent Equipment Failure

As Phillips sees it, in an ideal world there would never be breakdowns and equipment would operate 100 percent of the time at 100 percent capacity.

“But in the real world, equipment failure happens. The business impact can range from minimal and easily fixed to catastrophic.”

A catastrophic failure happens suddenly and causes a rig to cease operation, not only damaging the machine, but causing collateral damage as well.

Equipment continues to operate during a functional failure, but it cannot function according to design specs and likely requires a shutdown to correct the problem.

Understanding the why behind equipment failure can prevent an occurrence. It’s your first line of defense against unexpected equipment downtime, said Phillips.

Surface degradation, consisting mainly of corrosion and mechanical wear of machine parts, results in equipment failure in 70 percent of cases.

Corrosion is particularly problematic in equipment operated in harsh climates or conditions where moisture, dirt or salt can contaminate components.

Water increases the speed at which oil oxidizes, which ultimately leads to the part operating within an acidic environment.

Corrosion of vital industrial parts is among the most common causes of equipment failure, said Phillips.

Mechanical wear — abrasive or adhesive — happens when machine surfaces mechanically rub against each other.

Abrasive wear occurs when particle contaminants, such as dirt or wear debris, cause metal surfaces to become pitted and scored.

Adhesive wear occurs when two surfaces come into direct contact with each other and transfer material from one surface to the other.

To prevent machinery failure caused by surface degradation, keep machinery and internal parts well lubricated and sealed particle contaminant ingress, said Phillips.

The company advises contractors to make sure equipment is well maintained and has parts regularly replaced.

“Also, keep it clean and stored in an appropriate place, and only allow it to be operated by those trained to do so.”

Proper lubrication — using the correct type and amount of oil, grease and fluids — is integral to avoiding equipment failures and to keeping your business running smoothly.

One of the best ways to prevent corrosion and wear, lubrication also protects against heat and contamination and decreases noise in bearings.

“When equipment is properly and regularly lubricated, it has the highest chance of maximum service life,” according to Phillips.

Avoid Improper Greasing

Improper lubrication results from lack of procedures, over- or under-greasing, poor labeling, the wrong lubricant, mixing products and improper handling and storage.

“Without the right technician for the job or the correct procedure, improper lubrication may occur,” warned Phillips.

Over-greasing, the company said, leads to higher operating temperatures and aggressive machine contamination. While highly damaging under-greasing can cause noise, it can go unnoticed in a loud environment.

Correct labelling decreases the risk of cross-contamination and resolves confusion over which lubricants to use.

Applying the wrong lubricant can cause component failures and voids equipment warranty. Mixing products leads to component failures.

“Maintenance personnel need training on the correct ways of handling and installing bearings and using lubricants,” advised Phillips. “Even the most minute particles can enter a small dent and cause contamination.”

Key is implementing and adhering to documented lubrication procedures and making sure every technician is properly trained on them.

In fact, it is one of the most important things you can do to make sure your equipment is properly lubricated at all times.

Another critical step is integrating a labeling system and determining the output of grease guns while calculating the regrease requirements for bearings.

Doing so will avoid both over-and underlubrication, and is a great place to start the program, said Phillips66.

“Finally, check the owner’s manual to ensure that you are using the OEM-recommended lubricant for each piece of machinery.”

Consistently using the correct, high-quality lubricant “is the most important thing you can do to avoid costly equipment failures and to keep your equipment and your business running smoothly.”  CEG
