A $34.3 million reconstruction project on Benson Road and the Interstate 229 interchange is unfolding in Sioux Falls, S.D. The undertaking, a combined effort by the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) and the city of Sioux Falls, includes construction of a diverging diamond interchange (DDI), structure development work and road widening. “The northeast side of Sioux Falls continues to experience commercial and residential growth,” said Steve Neumeister, SDDOT project engineer. “New development is beginning on the east side of Interstate 229 and the interchange. Arterial improvements will better accommodate future and projected traffic volumes for all movements at the interchange.”

Construction Workforce Demands May Outstrip Quality Labor Pool Industry Tries to Fill Jobs, But Incoming Workers Often Lack Basic Skills By Lucy Perry CEG CORRESPONDENT

The good news: The Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is infusing the transportation and energy construction sectors with hundreds of billions of dollars. The not-so-good news: the lack of well-prepared workers is almost as great as the lack of workers, period. Combine the two and the result is a potentially insurmountable challenge for the transportation construction industry. see LABOR page 95

The AGC believes it’s time for the United States to rethink its approach to educating and preparing workers for careers in construction.
