As part of its $3 billion I-94 Modernization Project, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is demolishing and reconstructing 14 bridges in Detroit in advance of the main work via the Advanced Bridges program between 2019 and 2022 to help minimize the traffic impact of the construction on local residents and businesses when the main project gets under-

way. “The I-94 Modernization Project is undergoing changes to the original design to ensure that the project merges expectations of stakeholders, with safety requirements of the Federal Highway Administration,” stated the project web page. The Advanced Bridges program is expected to cost more than $200 million. This year, three bridges are being replaced over I-94. On two of them — the Concord Street and French Road — Dan’s Excavating

Inc. is responsible for the reconstruction. The work on the $17.6 million contract began in March 2019 and both bridges will be delivered in November. The work on the $17.6 million contract “These bridges were began in March 2019 and both bridges built in the 1950s as will be delivered in November. The project sponsors are the part of the original I-94 construction project,” said Rob Morosi, FHWA, MDOT, and the city of MDOT Communications. “They Detroit, with the FHWA and the have served the motoring public city of Detroit being the cost sharwell for many years but are now at ing partners. MDOT is responsible the end of their lifespan.” see BRIDGES page 74

Purdue Using Sensors to Track Lifecycle of Concrete A team of Purdue University engineers is using roadway sensors to compile data on “concrete maturity” during select highway patching and paving projects — a project that seeks to establish “evidence-based recommendations” on the optimal time to re-open highways to traffic once construction activity is completed.

The Indiana Department of Transportation is overseeing this project, which so far has embedded sensors into three state highways: I-70, I-74 and I465 near Indianapolis. The Purdue team also is working with the Federal Highway Administration on a nationwide pooled fund study to see CONCRETE page 70

The Purdue team — led by Luna Lu, an associate professor at the university’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering — is collecting what it calls “concrete strength data” in real time through measurements of hydration, stiffness, compressive strength and other material properties.
