‘Bumblebee’ Knocks Out Tunnel for $200M Louisville Project By Lori Tobias CEG CORRESPONDENT

As work on a unique $25 million pump station wraps up, a boring machine dubbed “Bumblebee” continues carving out a 4-mi., 18-story deep tunnel in Louisville, Ky. It’s all part of the Louisville/Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District’s (MSD) $200 million project to help prevent wastewater and stormwater from overflowing into the Ohio River during periods of heavy rain. Construction on the tunnel began in 2017 and is anticipated to be complete in October. “Work on the tunnel goes on in three, eight-

hour shifts Monday through Friday,” said Project Manager Jacob Mathis. “They use Saturdays as make up days or to do maintenance on the machine. Sunday is an off day. The tunnel, being as big as it is, has the capacity for 55 million gallons of storage. That’s the equivalent of 83 Olympic-sized swimming pools.” The tunnel is 22 ft. in diameter and will be lined with a 12-in. fit form concrete liner for a 20-ft. tunnel when completed. Bumblebee was named in an internal MSD contest by an employee whose mother once met Mohammed Ali, a native of Louisville. see WATERWAY page 62

At the University of North Dakota (UND), crews are making significant progress on a new Memorial Union building. The $80 million, 158,000 sq.-ft. student union center will offer upgraded services and the latest in technology when it opens in 2021. “The Memorial Union is the heart of campus,” said Cassie Gerhardt, UND associate dean of students. “It’s where the campus community gathers and where the campus community learns. Memorial Union has always been about the students.” Memorial Union will include study and meeting spaces, a three-story atrium entry with natural light, energy-efficient windows and an open lounge with flexible seating and a variety of meeting spaces. Plans call for a multipurpose room with a balcony and retractable theater seating for 300. see UND page 78

Demolition of the old UND Union took approximately 10 weeks. All debris was sorted, in order to separate as much recyclable material as possible. Rubble that could be salvaged was sent to local facilities.
