This month (June), the FHWA released a blueprint for states to develop half a million charging stations, part of the Biden administration’s goal of moving from gas- to electric-powered vehicles. The White House believes that in the process the plan will create jobs for steelworkers, electrical workers and laborers to build, install and maintain the network.

The vision is the installation of EV fast-charging

stations every 50 miles, give or take, across the country.

A uniform system drivers can use anywhere they drive, much like the highway infrastructure system, is the end of the rainbow.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the administration wants a system that is accessible, user-friendly and available regardless of the type of vehicle or where the user lives. see CHARGING page 36

Real-Time Eyes Help Gerke Meet Frac Sand Production Goals Tomah, Wis.-based specialty contractor Gerke Excavating has more than three decades of experience dredging limestone and more than a decade mining frac sand from ponds, lakes and other bodies of water. Sonar and dredge positioning systems using a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) have been key pieces of the company’s technology toolbox for years, helping drive efficiency and productivity on dredge equipment. That customer-focus would prove particularly valuable when the demand for Wisconsin frac sand grew.

In early 2021, Gerke was contracted to dredge frac sand from a 100-acre pond. The frac sand materials are located at an average depth of up to 50 ft., with some shallow areas at 30 ft. and deeper areas up to 80 ft. The production goal is to hit 3.5 million tons across the 8-month production season (March-October), with a production rate of 1,000 tons/hour — all while maintaining setbacks from bordering wetlands and floodplains.

To meet the contractual objectives, Gerke would need dredge equipment built for deeper dredging in rocky conditions and the ability to see and map the mine surface in real-time.

Purpose-Built Production Gerke has long relied on jet suction dredges to remove underwater materials. However, the pond depth and asset material were

beyond the capabilities of this machine.

“The bottom of the pond is primarily rock, and the customer needed more tonnage, which would require us to cut those rocks to liberate deeper materials,” said Wayne McGinnis, mining operations supervisor of Gerke Excavating. “Jet suction dredge machines are not built to do that.

So, we knew we needed a bigger dredge machine with a cutterhead.”

DSC Dredge equipped the Marlin machine with DSC’s bottom visualization system called DSC VISION, with innovation from DSC Dredge, guidance from Trimble and powered by Teledyne Marine. The solution combines Trimble marine positioning systems, GNSS receivers, antennas and machine guidance sensors for accurate dredge and cutter head positioning, Teledyne Marine’s 3D marine imaging sonar, and a DSC customized visual interface that correctly depicts the current dredge

location, depth of the cutterhead and topography of the bottom.

Together, these solutions allow dredge operators and managers to “stop dredging in the dark,” according to DSC Dredge.

“We know the value of sonar and GNSS individually,” said McGinnis. “With these systems, we could position our machines and then see where we were at and where we needed to mine — but it was in two distinct models. DSC VISION brings all of that together in one highly visual model.” see GERKE page 26

“Once we began dredging, we found it easier to use the map created by the sonars as the frac sand removal progressed,” said Wayne McGinnis, mining operations supervisor of Gerke Excavating. “Turns out, the DSC VISION’s ability to continually map existing conditions was more accurate than the bathymetric model as we moved along.”

Michael C. Liptak, Founder of ALL, Passes Away at 91 The principal architect of the heavy lift equipment rental category and driving force behind The ALL Family of Companies has passed away. Michael C. Liptak was 91.

Together with his wife, Marvine, and brothers, Lawrence and Jake, Mr. Liptak founded ALL Erection & Crane Rental in Cleveland, Ohio, with just a single crane in 1964. Through the decades, it grew into the largest privately held crane rental company in North America, boasting 33 branches across the continent, a fleet of more than 3,500 cranes and an employee roster totaling more than 1,500.

At the time of ALL’s founding, most contractors had to purchase and maintain their own cranes. Mr. Liptak and his inner circle saw a customer need, bought their own crane, and began renting it. In the process, they created a new category — crane rental — and backed it with hard work, reliable products and outstanding customer service, according to the company.

Mr. Liptak was a blue-collar guy from a blue-collar city, and he built his business through sweat, time and a handshake that was his bond. In the world Mr. Liptak and his brothers grew up in, nothing came easy, but he wanted to make life a little easier for the working people who relied on heavy lift equipment to do their jobs — because he was one of them.

Up until his final days, Mr. Liptak was still involved in daily life at ALL, visiting branches and offering his advice and expertise. He was well known to weigh in on critical — or even seemingly mundane — business issues, because even if he had handed off the mantle of responsibility, he never stopped carrying the weight of his life work. He pushed those around him to be the best they could be. And he could be that type of leader because there wasn’t a thing he hadn’t done.

“Before there was an ALL Crane, there was a man driving

dump trucks in a quarry,” said Mr. Liptak’s son, Michael L. Liptak, current CEO and president of the company. “He drove trucks, operated cranes, fixed cranes when they broke and saved enough to buy new ones when they were needed. From that foundation, he built everything we know here at ALL.” Known to many as “Big Mike,” he never stopped being excited about the basics of the business, perhaps best characterized by the kid-like way he felt compelled to go out and operate any new crane the company had acquired. You can’t keep an operator out of the seat, and Mr. Liptak was an operator at heart.

Mr. Liptak was about balance, too.

“Everything Dad did was for the thousands upon thousands for whom he provided jobs over the years,” added Michael L. Liptak. “That was never lost on me or the rest of the second- and now third-generation family working at ALL. We were all lucky to have the shade of his mighty shadow.”

Liptak credited his father’s vision for helping to guide the company to its current success. Always about balance, he said his father knew that steady growth coupled with impeccable quality were the keys to longevity. His instincts proved correct, as the company he founded approaches its 60th year.

Liptak also recalls a driven man who always had time for family.

“Everyone here is treated like family — and many actual families make ALL their life’s work,” he said. “The family feeling extends to our customers and suppliers as well. That all started with Dad. He created a place where everyone was welcome, and the sky was the limit as far as advancement. He’s my inspiration, both as a leader and a person. To say he will be missed is a monumental understatement.”

Case CTL Debuts at Southeastern’s Heath, Ohio, Open House

C

ontinuing its round of open house events, Southeastern Equipment Company invited contractors and municipal maintenance employees to get a first look at Case’s recently launched TV620B compact track loader at the dealership’s Heath, Ohio, branch on May 26. The event attracted a sizable crowd eager to learn about the new machine, which Case cites as the largest and most powerful CTL ever built.

The 114-hp, 6,200-lb. rated operating capacity TV620B is equipped with more standardized features than previously available on any Case CTL. Features include standard adjustable electro-hydraulic controls; high-flow hydraulics; auto ride control; one-way self-leveling; a hydraulic coupler; an auto-reversing fan; and a one-year subscription to Case SiteWatch telematics.

Attendees at the open house were treated to lunch and had an opportunity to spend one-on-one time with the dealership’s sales representatives and support personnel in a relaxed and informative environment.

Iowa Airports Receive $100M The Iowa Department of Transportation announced $100 million in grant awards for Iowa commercial airports. In March, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced a historic investment to modernize and strengthen Iowa’s air transportation system through the $100M Iowa Commercial Aviation Infrastructure Fund (ICAIF).

The fund aggressively targets some of Iowa’s largest aviation system needs: terminal buildings, parking structures and hangar infrastructure at commercial service airports.

Iowa’s eight commercial service airports were eligible to apply for projects that support modernization and expansion. All of Iowa’s commercial airports applied and have been approved for their fully allocated amount announced in the ICAIF program.

The ICAIF program is made possible with allocations through Federal American Rescue Plan State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds. Once grant awards are executed, airports will have until Dec. 15, 2023, to obligate funds, and until June 30, 2026, to claim reimbursement of eligible expenses under the agreement.

ICAIF Project Summary • Des Moines International Airport — $58,783,949: Parking/Terminal —

Construct a 5-story parking garage, a new commercial multi-lane drive adjacent to the parking garage, and complete 30 percent design phase for the new phased Airport Terminal Project.

• The Eastern Iowa Airport (Cedar Rapids) — $28,350,890: Terminal — Completes the final phase (Phase 4) of the Terminal Modernization that began in 2014.

• Sioux Gateway Airport — $3,149,582: Hangar — Begin Phase 1 of the North Thangar Development project with T-hangar buildings.

Caterpillar Inc. announced it will move its global headquarters to the company’s existing office in Irving, Texas, from its current location in Deerfield, Ill. “We believe it's in the best strategic interest of the company to make this move, which supports Caterpillar's strategy for profitable growth as we help our customers build a better, more sustainable

world,” said Chairman and CEO Jim Umpleby.

Caterpillar has had a presence in Texas since the 1960s across several areas of the company. Illinois remains the largest concentration of Caterpillar employees anywhere in the world.

Gerke Excavating Appreciates Accuracy of DSC VISION GERKE from page 8

One Clear Picture For the pond project, Gerke started with a 3D bathymetric model prepared by a marine survey company.

“Once we began dredging, we found it easier to use the map created by the sonars as the frac sand removal progressed,” explained McGinnis. “Turns out, the DSC VISION’s ability to continually map existing conditions was more accurate than the bathymetric model as we moved along.”

That continuous visibility into current conditions has been invaluable. For instance, in 2021, the dredge operators had to do a lot of rock cutting. Once the machine moves to a new area, the sonar conducts multiple side scans of the defined work area and the operator immediately knows exactly where to cut and how deep to go, without waiting for a surveyor.

“With DSC VISION, I’m very confident in meeting targets because our operators can see where the material is. For the area that we worked last year, I’m 100 percent confident that we dug to an 80-foot depth,” he said.

One of the other advantages of DSC VISION is the ability to set boundary limits for the operator. For instance, when the operator gets near a bank, the system indicates the slopes that they need to achieve.

“On this frac sand project, those limits are particularly important as we are mining close to a wetland and a floodplain,” said McGinnis. “Assured setbacks are huge for us, and for our general contractor, who has to report our work to environmental regulators.

With DSC VISION, highly accurate, near real-time maps of the pond surface are readily available.”

Other applications where DSC VISION has helped include pulling volumes and setting anchor points to position winch lines.

One of the unexpected benefits of the system has been cable preservation. Working at night, operators would often catch and cut their swing cables on the cutter head because they couldn’t see them.

“Now we use DSC VISION to give them a set point that is visible on the cab screen night and day, which has eliminated a lot of cut cables,” said McGinnis.

Operational Satisfaction When asked about training and operator satisfaction, McGinnis noted that, like any new solution, there is some training to get used to features and functionality.

“We trained a number of new operators over the last year,” he said. “Many of those individuals had never run a dredge or anything with GNSS. While DSC VISION did require some training, once they learned

how to use the map systems, they were all in.

It’s a lot of common sense, and we’re finding that once new operators are up to speed, they perform exceptionally well.”

One area of particular benefit is the reduction in setup time prior to dredging.

McGinnis estimates that setup time is 50 percent faster than with previous methods.

“That’s because DSC VISION scans and measures where we need to be even before we make the move. That capability alone saves us one to two hours on every move,” he said.

It’s also saved on surveying costs during dredge operations.

“Now we can shape as we dig because the DSC VISION technology is seeing and mapping existing conditions as we go. Not having to place and replace stakes on the job saves us 75 percent on extra surveying,” said McGinnis.

Another unexpected benefit of DSC VISION has been communication with plant operators.

“The plant has an expectation of how much material we’ll provide on any given day. If for some reason, the dredged material might reduce to 500 tons/hour or we’re working in an area with heavy tonnage, our team can radio ahead to the plant manager to be prepared. These plants depend on the consistency of the product. No plant can wash and produce good material with highs and lows — now we can help them operate with efficiency.”

Never Going Back As every mine excavation company knows, leaving mine resources at the bottom is lost yield.

“We have just the sonar on one of our other dredge machines, and we’re very confident that we’re efficiently mining the material at a good production rate,” said McGinnis. “The difference is that we don’t really know what underwater conditions we are dealing with until we drop in and feel around for a bit.”

He also noted that they are seeing that the underwater floor isn’t nearly as clean as the surface that is left behind with the DSC VISION-equipped Marlin.

McGinnis said that after installation and final commissioning, the dredge guidance system payback was about eight months — but there are many intangible benefits beyond just cost.

“It’s hard to measure on a project like this, but imagine if we had gone beyond the set limits into the wetlands? The cost of that overdredge would have been very high. So, in some ways, the value of the system is immeasurable,” he said.

One of the other reasons for the success, according to the Gerke team, is the partnership with DSC Dredge.

“We can’t afford to lose any days of production if we are to meet our targets,” said McGinnis. “When production starts, everything from the dredger to the software has to run reliably. DSC Dredge has been a great

Brooks Tractor Announces Opening of Its Seventh Facility in Wisconsin

In its 77th year as a company, Brooks Tractor announced its seventh and newest facility in Wisconsin has recently opened at 2900 Bicycle St. in Sparta, Wis. The Brooks family and representatives of Nikolai Construction broke ground for the new facility in April 2021.

The 27,831 sq.-ft. Sparta shop sits on eight acres and brings parts, service and warehouse facilities together under one roof. In addition, there are two conference rooms available for customer and employee training.

This facility has been recognized by John Deere as a Certified Rebuild Center, which entails meeting strict processes and facility requirements.

“Sparta is an additional location for us, which is our seventh in Wisconsin,” said Lew Brooks, president and CEO of Brooks Tractor. “Our West Salem facility is approximately 20 miles away from Sparta. It is currently being renovated and will stay open primarily carrying compact equipment for rental and sale.”

In stock items can be shipped via UPS or are available for immediate pick up. Customers also can take advantage of 24-hour parts pick up with secure lockers.

That would mean charging stations with a mile of major highways, easily located online or through an app.

The stations would be configured with enough outlets to avoid long waits to charge.

User fees would be similar across the system.

Setting the Stage According to the department of transportation, the proposed rule would establish the groundwork for states to build federallyfunded charging station projects across a national EV charging network.

The standards also establish workforce requirements for installation, maintenance and operations to increase the safety and reliability of charging station function and use and create and support good-paying, highlyskilled jobs across the country.

Earlier this year, the Biden administration earmarked approximately $5 billion for states over the next five years to build out a national EV charging network.

“To support the transition to electric vehicles, we must build a national charging network that makes finding a charge as easy as filling up at a gas station,” said Buttigieg.

“These new ground rules will help create a network of EV chargers across the country that are convenient, affordable, reliable and accessible for all Americans.”

The IIJA provides states with the funding and framework to build out a reliable charging network, said Stephanie Pollack, deputy federal highway administrator.

“This is a foundational step that will provide EV drivers with predictable access to reliable electric vehicle charging access across the United States.”

States will develop their EV deployment plans in concert with the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, established by the infrastructure act.

The agency is providing direct technical assistance and support to states with the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program.

“We’re making sure that charging stations are easily and equally accessible, allowing every American to get coast to coast in an electric vehicle,” said Jennifer M. Granholm, secretary of energy. “The investments will not only build an interconnected national charging network, but also boost local economies and strengthen our independence from fossil fuels.”

Big Picture FHWA released other resources to help states complete deployment plans and access funding to build out the charging network.

best locations for charging stations when it may not be possible to install at the required 50-mile intervals.

Charging stations would contain a minimum number and type of chargers capable of supporting drivers’ fast charging needs.

Additionally, rules would require consistency regarding the installation, operation and maintenance of projects to provide the traveling public with reliable charging expectations.

The proposed rule would further specify the required minimum density of provided chargers, payment methods and requirements for customer support services.

Proposed rules also will set strong certification standards for the workers installing, operating and maintaining electric vehicle chargers, said DOT, ensuring funds support good-paying, high-quality jobs and chargers are installed by a highly-skilled, professional workforce.

The proposed rule also will support workforce development and on-the-job training, “building the clean-energy workforce of the future.”

Other proposed requirements would help create a seamless national network of EV charging infrastructure that could communicate and operate on the same software platforms from one state to another.

They would address traffic control devices and on-premise signage; data submittal requirements to help create a public EV charging database; and network connectivity requirements to allow for secure remote monitoring, diagnostics, control.

Additionally, the FHWA proposes standardized communication of charging price and availability to help consumers make informed decisions about trip planning and when and where to charge their EVs.

Building the Grid Ken Thomson of Facility Builders believes building EV charging stations enables the contractor to facilitate a host of people transferring their vehicular power away from fossil fuels and toward electricity.

“As accessibility to recharging stations continues to grow, the momentum is apt to snowball.”

The construction is relatively straightforward, he said. Most of the interfaces are prepackaged units available from several suppliers.

The contractor’s job is to set up the interface, ensure that all standards and safety regulations are met and work out parking and accessibility options with the station owner.

“Comparatively, natural gas filling stations are more complicated to construct, primarily due to accommodating the tank, controlling moisture content and the greater number of interfacing options to choose among.”

Of course, details have to be worked out and choices made in the process of building.

Whether the installation is public or private, residential or commercial, the number of parking spaces with access to charging interfaces must all be determined.

One also has to calculate charging capacity, determine means of access and set the charging standard, he said.

A private station is appropriate for commercial vehicle fleets and also for individually assigned use at residences or places of employment.

Public accessibility implies the need for an interface equipped with a universal form of billing.

Public stations also need to provide more

than one charging level option.

“Often when a new technology is introduced into an existing environment, some amount of alteration is necessary,” said Thomson.

In the case of bringing EV charge capability to a building, one may be laying extra conduit, adjusting electrical loads and changing parking assignments.

For multiple users, such as in a condominium or office building, additional measures might mean individualizing power usage records.

“Construction contracts in such cases need to spell out the terms of tenant improvements, especially if uninterrupted continual use of the space during construction is required.”

Other issues EV charging station owners should discuss with their general contractor include off-grid solutions, which can be installed under certain circumstances.

Examples are solar panels mounted on carports, rooftops or stand-alone structures.

“In some cases, unused power can be sold back to the utility,” said Thomson. “Another option is to connect to a special EV network grid, the power for which is 100 percent from renewable energy sources.”

For on-grid applications, it may be possible to implement a “smart grid” arrangement whereby charging is reduced at peak load hours or initiated at low-cost times.

It’s crucial for all types of businesses to think about how they can become part of the new fueling network, believes ChargePoint, an EV infrastructure company.

Rich Quattrini, vice president of customer solutions, said fuel retailers face a particularly urgent need to modernize operations to remain relevant and expand revenue generation opportunities.

“Organizations need to carefully choose and design their fuel retailing sites, especially when it comes to DC fast-charging,” said Quattrini.

Before even getting started with site design, though, a contractor will want to fully understand what to plan for. Here are Quattrini’s seven suggested considerations: 1. How much electrical supply will be needed?

Based on location and the volume of EV charging expected, the charging partner and utility can help estimate and request the type of electrical service and amount of power from the utility.

2. How much space is available for infrastructure?

Along with evaluating electrical needs, the amount of space available where that space is relative to other infrastructure, must be considered. Scaling to serve and provide fuel for a whole new set of drivers, think see CHARGING page 81

The Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers (IAAP) announced the opening of registration for its annual golf outing, taking place Sept. 15. The IAAP encourages early registration to guarantee course preference of either WeaverRidge Golf Club in Peoria, Ill., or Coyote Creek Golf Club in Bartonville, Ill. Registration includes: • round of golf at one of the two courses

Kleemann Designs EVO2 Generation for Sustainable Use Kleemann’s jaw crusher MOBICAT MC 110(i) EVO2 and the cone crusher MOBICONE MCO 90(i) EVO2, with their efficient crusher direct drive, have a holistic drive concept that forms the basis for high cost-effectiveness.

Both machines of the new EVO2 generation are equipped with a power train. The crusher is driven directly, and thus with high fuelefficiency, via a reliable fluid coupling. Conveying components, such as the vibrating feeder, the doubledeck prescreen or the discharge conveyors, are all-electric.

A robust and easily accessible transmission guarantees efficient power transmission. It not only operates with a high level of efficiency but also has increased protection against dust.

The power and load-dependent fan drive also ensures low-noise and economical operation.

Operation in ECO mode can additionally reduce fuel consumption as well as wear in idle phases.

The plants can be optionally equipped with a heat package (-15 to + 50 C) or cold package (-25 to +40 C). The cold package has an autonomous auxiliary heater with a convenient timer function.

Environmentally Sound Operation · Less Noise, Dust In the new drive concept, the speed of the cooler fan and thus also the cooling capacity is controlled automatically, which considerably reduces the noise level. TOMRA Appoints Bynum to New Sales Manager; Doyle Moves to Key Accounts

Sensor-based sorting specialist TOMRA Recycling announced the appointment of Parker Bynum as the new sales manager, USA West, covering the waste and recycling industry.

In this role, Bynum will consult directly with TOMRA partners and customers to implement the right advanced sorting technology solutions designed to improve recycling recovery rates, increase product purity and throughput, and boost profitability. He takes over for Nick Doyle, who has been promoted to the newly created position of key accounts manager, North America.

“I’ve personally known and worked with Parker for several years and have experienced first-hand his unrelenting passion for recycling and advancing the circular economy as well as his strong work ethic,” said Ty Rhoad, regional director Americas for TOMRA Recycling. “Over the years, Parker has built a vast network of industry connections who respect his dedication to doing whatever it takes to ensure their success.”

Bynum brings to TOMRA Recycling more than a decade of industry and related sales experience. He served as business development manager with industry giant Waste Management’s hauling sector in the southern region, establishing the company’s recycling services. He also worked for Rehrig Pacific Company for four years, where he was an outside environmental sales representative to municipal and private hauling companies over a six-state region.

“TOMRA is a global organization with thousands of installations worldwide. This gives me the opportunity to take the best recycling practices from various markets and apply them to the western region territory. As the recycling industry continues to grow, so too does the need for further sorting automation with TOMRA technologies, and I am eager to customize these best practices for my customers’

specific sorting needs,” said Bynum. “I look forward to building on Nick’s [Doyle] success, and I see potential for emerging markets like wood and textile recycling.”

Doyle Moves to Key Accounts Bynum takes over territory responsibilities from Nick Doyle, who has been promoted to key accounts manager, North America, for TOMRA Recycling. This newly created position expands the company’s level of support, tasking Doyle to work more closely with larger recycling operations and provide customized solutions designed to fit the unique needs of customers with multiple systems working at various locations throughout North America. He also will lead the charge in developing the emerging wood and textile markets as well as other rising niche segments.

“Nick has done a tremendous job developing the western region for TOMRA Recycling and has established great relationships with both smaller and larger recycling operations,” said Rhoad. “His previous experience with a plant builder plus these last four years with TOMRA affords him a deeper understanding of optical sorting technologies as well as entire recycling processes. These unique qualifications will allow TOMRA Recycling to better assist our key account customers’ sorting needs and lead the charge on emerging markets.”

Mazio SKID Paver Provides Jobsite Agility, Versatility The Mazio skid-steer-mounted SKID Paver is ideal for asphalt patching and paving of roads, pathways, bicycle tracks, parking lots, driveways and utility trenches.

With a 1.5 cu. yd. (1.4 cu m) hopper capacity, a paving width of up to 6.2 ft. (1.9 m) and a paving speed of 82 ft. (25 m) per minute, the SKID Paver can be installed on any type of ISO 24410 skid steer loader.

The unit works with hot or cold mix asphalt, paving asphalt thicknesses of 2 in. (5 cm) up to 10 in. (25 cm). Liquid propane gas (LPG) heaters keep material heated to 284 F (140 C). The wide 108.25 in. (275 cm) hopper receives asphalt material directly from the haul truck, allowing for front or side loading, and automatically feeds to a 7.9 in. (20 cm) auger. The machine’s retractable hydraulic screed allows the operator to work around obstacles.

Volvo Trucks Introduces Route Planning, Technology Tools Volvo Trucks North America is introducing two new innovative technology tools to support customers in successfully deploying Volvo VNR Electric Class 8 models into their fleet operations. The new route planning and connected technology tools are designed to help customers maximize performance capabilities and benefits of the zero-tailpipe emission Volvo VNR Electric model.

The announcement was made at ATA’s Technology & Maintenance Council’s (TMC) 2022 Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition, in Orlando, Fla. In January 2022, Volvo Trucks announced enhancements to its Volvo VNR Electric model, including a six-battery package option with an increased energy storage of up to 565 kWh and an operational range of up to 275 mi. The nextgeneration Volvo VNR Electric, which will enter production in Q2 2022, is available in multiple configurations, including a 6x4 straight truck, 6x4 tractor, 6x2 tractor, 4x2 tractor and single-axle straight truck.

To help customers identify the ideal Volvo VNR Electric configuration to support local and regional distribution routes, Volvo Trucks has designed a route planning tool, the Electric Performance Generator (EPG), as an extension of its connectivity platform. The EPG application enables fleet managers to simulate real-world routes for their VNR Electric trucks, taking into consideration the vehicle configuration and battery capacity, environmental factors such as terrain and ambient temperature and specific route details, including traffic patterns.

Based on estimated energy consumption, the EPG tool will indicate if an opportunity charge would be required, allowing the fleet manager to either adjust the route or plan ahead for a charging event.

Fleet operators that are interested in utilizing the EPG tool to evaluate ideal routes to deploy the Volvo VNR Electric can work with the local sales representatives at Volvo Trucks Certified EV Dealerships, currently available in the United States in California, New York and Virginia, and also in Quebec, Canada, with dealerships in several additional states finalizing their certifications throughout 2022.

Volvo Trucks customers who are currently operating VNR Electrics will be able to access the EPG tool, which leverages Volvo Trucks’ connectivity platform to integrate with its remote diagnostics and battery health monitoring services, to plan for optimized daily operation of their Volvo

Volvo Trucks also has introduced connected technology solutions from telematics provider Geotab to provide fleet managers with full visibility into the real-time performance of their Volvo VNR Electric fleet. Via cloud integration, data from each truck is migrated to the MyGeotab platform using the Volvo Telematics Gateway that comes factory installed in every Volvo VNR Electric. Fleet managers will have access to the data through the online portal where they can: • View the current location of their Volvo VNR Electric fleet on a map, including whether the vehicles are driving or parked (within pre-set geofence locations) • Receive notifications for truck departure and arrival, including the odometer and state of charge • Set alerts to notify the fleet operations team of the vehicles’ current state of charge, including warnings for low charge • Monitor the vehicles’ charging status, including whether it is connected to the charger, actively charging, completed charging, or if charging is interrupted

• Energy consumption reports and measurement charts “Introducing battery-electric trucks into a fleet can come with a steep learning curve for both the fleet manager and drivers as they work to navigate the difference in range and fueling time compared to their diesel fleet,” said Andy Brown, product marketing manager, Volvo Trucks North America. “These new tools enable fleet managers to find the sweet spot for how to incorporate Volvo VNR Electrics into their operations today and as their battery-electric fleet grows.”

These new technology solutions will be introduced in 2022 and come standard as part of the Volvo Gold Contract, Volvo Trucks’ premier service offering for the Volvo VNR Electric model. The Volvo Gold Contract is a turn-key solution that allows customers to have operational peace of mind with electric vehicles and includes the full Uptime Services bundle for the Volvo VNR Electric, combining Volvo Trucks’ battery monitoring service with its remote diagnostics, Volvo Action Service and ASIST via the Volvo Trucks 24/7 Uptime Center.

Navistar Standardizes Telematic Devices Navistar solidifies its commitment to a connected and data-driven future with the standardization of a factoryinstalled telematics device on all new builds of the complete Class 6-8 International Truck and IC Bus vehicle product portfolios, including electric models.

NTEA, Commercial Truck Trader, Trail King Industries S&P Global Mobility Collaborate Welcomes Eric Thomas as New Director of Sales

NTEA – The Association for the Work Truck Industry announced a collaboration with Commercial Truck Trader and S&P Global Mobility (formerly the automotive team at IHS Markit) to provide commercial vehicle life cycle trends and intelligence to the work truck industry.

This cooperative initiative is expected to result in the North American Commercial Vehicle Market Report — Powered by Commercial Truck Trader, NTEA and S&P Global Mobility, a semi-annual industry report that delves into the details, data and trends around the life cycle of commercial vehicles — from chassis shipments to truck registration to later stages when used vehicles are resold.

“The commercial vehicle community has an unending appetite for this type of information,” said Kevin Koester, managing director of NTEA. “This collaboration will allow data points to be connected in new ways, providing for more thorough forecasting and trend analysis in all segments of the industry.”

eff Martin Auctioneers held its Upper Midwest construction and transportation auction on June 11 at its Fahey Sales facility in Glencoe, Minn.

Jeff Martin Auctioneers acquired Fahey Sales in 2021. More than 800 lots featuring construction equipment, trucks, trailers and more were up for bid.

the road over a four-year period. At a cost of $266 million, the freeway will be repaired from Will Carlton Road to Eureka Road and rebuilt from Eureka Road to 6 Mile Road, a distance of 24 mi. The project was launched last summer.

“The concrete pavement was 40 years old and blowing up,” said Jeff Horne, construction contracts project manager of MDOT. “The road was eating up our maintenance budget with a continued need for patching and pothole repair. Since more than 190,000 vehicles per day are using this highway, repairs caused increased congestion as well as unhappy motorists. We want a rebuilt road that will last.”

The highway was one of the last continuously reinforced concrete roads in the state. More than 40 subcontractors are required for the job, with Dan’s Excavating serving as the prime contractor.

At a cost of $266 million, I-275 will be repaired from Will Carlton Road to Eureka Road and rebuilt from Eureka Road to 6 Mile Road, a distance of 24 mi.

Recycling Green construction practices were important on this project.

“The old concrete roadway was crushed on-site and mixed with cement and water to form a Cement Treated Permeable Base [CPTB] layer,” said Horne. “Our cross-section of the new freeway is 10 inches of natural aggregate; 6 inches of CTPB; and 12 inches of nonreinforced concrete.”

The enormous project will

require enough concrete to build a 12-ft.-wide highway lane from Detroit to Grand Rapids (approximately 174 mi.). Concrete pavement and cement treated base will be constructed by AJAX Paving Industries.

Last year’s work consisted mainly of patching and rehabbing 10 mi. of roadway, along with preparing 14 mi. of roadway to get ready for this year’s work. This effort included widening and resur-

facing shoulders and building crossovers to facilitate traffic during stage construction.

John Morse, project manager, and the team at Dan’s Excavating worked with MDOT to finalize a plan for rerouting all traffic to the northbound lanes for this year’s work. This enabled workers to push the project ahead with fewer interruptions and with greater safety for both workers and motorists.

This new arrangement achieved

many efficiencies for workers and planners on the project.

“Our team was able to use the 14 crossover ramps on this section of the project to get our trucks in and out of the job more quickly,” said Morse.

The plan is for the work this year to complete the rebuild for 14 mi. southbound, then switch traffic over onto the fresh pavement next year. Morse hopes that his team will be able to complete the work

on the northbound section in 2023.

“The bridges have required a variety of work, including grinding down epoxy layers that were failing and providing new epoxy,” said Morse. “The epoxy keeps moisture out of the bridge structure and provides a more long-lasting bridge. Hull has also worked to repair the foundations of many of the bridges. Many of them were in a sorry state.”

The excavation and rebuilding will require enormous work and raw materials. AEM Hall of Fame Recognizes Families in Manufacturing

Melroe Manufacturing Company, founded by E.G. Melroe who was inducted, along with sons Les, Cliff and Irving, nephew Sylvan and son-in-law Eugene Dahl, in 2014, put eight people from two families into the AEM Hall of Fame.

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) Hall of Fame is recognizing the families inducted, either together, or over generations.

“With 66 individual members, it amazes me that there are eight different families with multiple members in the AEM Hall of Fame,” said AEM President Megan Tanel.

“Including the first father-son-daughter combination to be inducted, in Gary and Robert Vermeer and Mary Andringa of Vermeer. I look forward to incorporating new families of all kinds into the Hall of Fame this year and in the future.”

Mary Andringa of Vermeer Corporation is the third member of her family to be inducted, in 2019, after her brother Robert Vermeer (2016) and father and company founder Gary Vermeer (1996). The Pella, Iowa-based implement specialist is responsible for innovations ranging from the first stump cutter, first tree spade, several different kinds of trenchers, to finding new ways for farmers and contractors to afford them, and more efficient ways to produce them.

The most recent family induction to the AEM Hall of Fame are the Ferwerda Brothers Ray and Koop, inducted together in 2020 for inventing the Gradall hydraulic excavator. The earliest? Father Harry H. Barber (1993) and son H. Ashley “Ash” Barber (1994), the former for inventing the asphalt paving machine and co-founding of the Barber-Greene Company, and the

latter for his leadership as CEO of the same company.

The Steiger Family, father John and sons Maurice and Douglass, founders of the Steiger Tractor Company in the 1950s, focusing on heavy, articulated, four-wheeldrive agricultural tractors were inducted together in 2018, 32 years after their company was acquired by Case IH where their name lives on as the Case IH Steiger Series.

Meanwhile, a father-son team that started in the construction world, Joseph Cyril “J.C.” Bamford, founder and namesake of JCB Inc. (1993) and son Lord Anthony Bamford (2008) were inducted 15 years apart.

Finally, one of the most family-oriented organizations represented in the AEM Hall of Fame may be Bobcat. Bobcat, famous for its skid steer loaders that were invented by brothers Cyril and Louis Keller (1999) and originally manufactured and perfected

The plant, which is owned by Jackson County Development Authority (formerly leased to Carbonyx International USA), was designed to produce a carbon alloy product used to produce steel, a coke substitute offering both lower production costs and a more environmentally friendly coke type product.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, after complete construction this plant was never put into production. Due to the

complex construction of this plant, the components can have a variety of operating duties that can be used across multiple industries. The equipment that makes up this plant are as follows — coal dryer, belt conveyors, hoppers, filter packs, dust collector, blowers, screw conveyor, raw material tower, cooling system, bag housing and pulsing system.
