On May 9, Gov. Mike DeWine joined Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear to announce that the states have received federal environmental approval to move the $3.6 billion Brent Spence Bridge Corridor project forward, without tolls.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) issued a decision that concludes the federal environmental review, allowing the project to advance to design and construction.
“This is an important step forward in bringing efficiency to our nation’s supply chain. The project will address one of the worst truck bottlenecks in the nation by improving safety and travel on an interstate connection that carries more than $400 billion worth of freight every year,” said DeWine. “It’s also a big step in reducing the frustration and inconvenience drivers have experienced in the corridor for more than 20 years.”
“The Brent Spence Bridge Corridor project is a testament to what can happen when we work together to get things done,” said Beshear. “The federal approval is a major milestone for us, and we’re grateful to all our partners and communities for their feedback. We look forward to completing this project, which will further boost our economic growth and create more good jobs for our families.”
FHWA’s determination with the “Finding of No Significant Impact,” or FONSI, is based on a supplemental environmental assessment conducted by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). The assessment evaluated the social, economic and environmental effects of the project as well as measures to mitigate unavoidable impacts. The decision is also based on FHWA’s consideration of public and agency comments received during the public comment period.
KYTC and ODOT have conducted 16 neighborhood meetings and two open house events since late 2022 to solicit comments on the project plan. In addition, five public hearings were conducted in February, providing the public an opportunity to comment on the project’s supplemental environmental assessment. A diversity and inclusion committee, meanwhile, helps to assure intentional and deliberate workforce and business opportunities are created that reflect the rich diversity of the region.
Under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, agencies must consider the environmental impacts of their actions and decisions for federally funded projects. The Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project was awarded $1.6 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Investment Act in December of 2022.

A supplemental environmental assessment was required for the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project to assess updated regulatory requirements, changed site conditions and other considerations since 2012, when the project’s original environmental assessment was approved.
The Brent Spence Bridge was constructed in the 1960s to carry approximately 80,000 vehicles a day, but the daily I75/I-71 traffic load has reached 160,000 vehicles in recent years. Because I-75 is a key freight corridor stretching from Canada to Florida, the congestion impacts commerce and commuters who travel the corridor in the eastern United States.
Stretching from the Western Hills Viaduct in Ohio to Dixie Highway in Kentucky, the $3.6 billion Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project will be built without tolls and transform an 8-mi. portion of the I-75/71 interstate corridor, including a new companion bridge immediately to the west of the existing bridge. As the construction industry continues to make strides toward more sustainable and economical manufacturing practices, there are many considerations that come into play.
Most OEMs have begun to prioritize the growth of hybrid and electric solutions, while others continue to evaluate their manufacturing practices in hopes of pioneering more sustainable and eco-friendly processes for the rest of the industry.
In recent years, there has been a major uptick in sustainability driven initiatives, however, there are some practices that have been instrumental for many years in making a similar impact. It’s important to consider the many different ways to maximize, or even repurpose, your equipment fleet where possible, and remanufacturing does exactly that.
Unlocking economic value across the lifecycle of a machine while also adopting more sustainable methods, the remanufacturing of construction equipment allows for more environmental outcomes in a customer’s business while maintaining product circularity. The process of remanufacturing transforms old components to like-new condition, saving customers time and money while boosting performance and sustainability.
Remanufacturing is an industrial process used by equipment manu facturers that utilizes previously sold, worn or no-longer functional machine components, and remanu factures them into like-new, or in some cases better than new, condi tion and comparable in quality and performance capabilities.
While remanufacturing may often be confused with the recycling or repairing of machine components, remanufacturing takes it a step fur ther. Required by design, to be con sidered a fully remanufactured machine, the product at the end of its life will be used for its raw materials and its core. The core will then be reprocessed as the main input for the remanufacturing process. In addi tion, by not having to make a new engine, axle, or cylinder head from scratch, the natural resources like iron ore are preserved, melting fur naces aren’t fired up, and carbon footprints are therefore smaller.

At the end of a machine’s lifecycle, the cores are often lost when customers fail to return them to the manufacturer, leaving them without the capability to be reused in the remanufacturing process. In addition, high core yields are necessary for a sustainable business. Therefore, when the core of the machine goes unused following its full lifespan, there are less opportunities to remanufacture the machine or give it a second life.
When a machine breaks down, customers have a few options. They can fully remanufacture, recondition or rebuild their machines to get them back and running on the job site. When customers choose to rebuild or recondition the component, by fixing only what’s broken or replacing failed parts, there are some associated risks including dealing with the unknown costs and limited warranties.
Reconditioning is used when failed parts are replaced with new parts, inspected, and
may be tested prior to sending a machine back to the job. Rebuilding is used when failed parts are replaced with new or used parts, and therefore only what is broken is being fixed before going back into the field.
While often confused for reconditioned or rebuilt equipment, fully remanufactured equipment is held to a different standard. For a like-new performance at a fraction of the cost, and maximize your machine’s up time, remanufacturing is the way to go. In a remanufactured build, failed and other critical parts are replaced with OEM parts, inspected, and 100 percent dynamically tested to meet original performance criteria. These parts are often under warranty by the manufacturer.
Another differentiator in remanufacturing is that once a machine core is received, it is completely disassembled and cleaned. Then, each part is analyzed against current part specifications. Any part that does not meet the needed level of quality is either recycled of remanufactured using advanced reclaimed technique.
Finally, all components are inspected and tested to make they meet or exceed its original performance specifications. This makes remanufacturing an ideal solution for customers looking to retain the same performance they expect from a new machine, at a reduced cost.
Through the repurposing of salvageable machine cores and components, remanufacturing can support a circular economy while reducing the carbon footprint of many manufacturers. By being able to reduces energy consumption through the reuse, reclaiming and recycling of the core, remanufacturing is a more-sustainable way to bring life back into the components of a machine.
Reman operations are often focused on the remanufacturing of engines, electronics, drivetrain and hydraulic components of the machine. In 2022, nearly 27.6 million pounds of material were recycled through remanufacturing, according to the John Deere Sustainability Report.
In 2026, the anticipated material return is expected to exceed 49M pounds globally. Over time, this influx of salvaged materials helps reduce the amount of waste attributed to equipment manufacturing.
Additionally, according to a recent John Deere Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), there is a 54 percent reduction in CO2e when using a remanufactured axle. On average, there is a 2,647 kg CO2 reduction, which is equivalent to 6,652 driven miles in greenhouse gas emissions saved when utilizing a machine with a remanufactured axle. This helps reduce CO2 representing a carbon sequestration equal to 3.2 acres of U.S. forest.

On average, the price of a remanufactured part versus the cost of a brand-new part is approximately 20-30 percent less. This gets customers up and running on the job sooner, while saving additional costs in the process.
Looking at other key benefits, customers who remanufacture their equipment can reduce downtime due to faster repairs, save on costs associated with buying brand-new equipment or parts, and get back up and running on the job sooner.

Enbridge has retained a joint venture partnership between Barnard Construction Company Inc. and Civil and Building North America Inc. (CBNA), two tunneling companies, to lead construction of the Great Lakes Tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac.
Barnard, based in Bozeman, Mont., and CBNA, based in Miami, Fla., will work with Enbridge to build the tunnel for the state of Michigan. The Great Lakes Tunnel is being designed as a utility corridor to connect Michigan’s peninsulas. The tunnel will house the Line 5 pipeline as it crosses under the lakebed at the Straits to protect the Great Lakes and the environment and to ensure vital energy resources are delivered safely and reliably to the region.
“This agreement with Barnard and CBNA marks a milestone for this historic project. The selection of these two world-class companies reinforces our commitment to safely building the Great Lakes Tunnel,” said Tom Schwartz, senior vice president liquids pipelines, Enbridge Strategic Projects and Partnerships.
The contract was awarded following an extensive request for proposal (RFP) process that was initiated by Enbridge in early 2022. The Mackinac Straits Corridor Authority (MSCA), which is charged with oversight for construction and operations of the Great Lakes Tunnel agreed that the RFP conformed with requirements of the Tunnel Agreement. Financed solely by Enbridge, the Great Lakes Tunnel, once completed, will be owned and operated by the MSCA.
Barnard and CBNA will each retain a 50 percent partnership under the name Mackinac Straits Partners. Both companies have extensive tunnel related experience.
On the south side, a large portal will be created at the entrance point for a tunnel boring machine.
Combined, the companies have built more than 100 tunnels in 15 countries equaling more than 372 mi. of tunnel. A number of those projects involved geologic conditions similar to those that will exist in the Straits of Mackinac.
Enbridge is preparing to begin construction as soon as possible following the receipt of environmental permits for the tunnel project from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The
Corps has indicated early 2026 for permit decision making. As the company advances this major energy modernization infrastructure project, Enbridge remains steadfast in its plan to reduce emissions to net-zero by 2050 by investing in renewables, modernizing networks and transporting and delivering these energy resources safely.

Federal Courts in both Texas and Kentucky have now ruled that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) lacks the statutory authority to impose a Biden administration greenhouse gas (GHG) performance mandate on state transportation departments. The rulings invalidate the FHWA regulation, affirming that states have the autonomy to pursue their own environmental policies when it comes to GHG emissions.
While the federal government may choose to appeal the rulings or deploy other legal strategies, the new regulation will not take effect as FHWA had planned.
The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) and Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America filed joint legal briefs Feb. 16 in both courts supporting 22 states challenging FHWA’s imposition of a requirement that congressional leaders purposely excluded during negotiations leading to passage of the landmark 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Oshkosh Corporation announced that it is acquiring AUSA, a manufacturer of wheeled dumpers, rough-terrain forklifts and telehandlers for the construction, material handling, agriculture, landscape and specialty equipment industries. Upon closing, AUSA will become part of the Oshkosh Access segment, which includes the JLG, Jerr-Dan and Hinowa brands.

The Slag Cement Association (SCA) successfully concluded its third annual Slag Cement School in Alsip, Ill. The educational event, held on April 29 to 30, featured technical presentations on the benefits of slag cement in concrete design and construction, as well as sustainability tools and resources available to the concrete industry. Discovery Builders, a joint venture between Turner Construction Company, Adrian Maldonado & Associates Inc., Next Generation Construction and The AKA Team, was awarded a $200 million contract to build a new Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering building for Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. The overall cost of the project, including design, equipment, relocations and other soft costs, is $300 million.
The five-story Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering building will include wet labs, dry labs and other research space. It will be the University’s first new research structure in more than two decades and will help the University continue to grow its research efforts.
The 189,000-sq.-ft. project will be completed in 2026.

Metso’s Lokotrack EC range brings a new diesel-electric power line to the aggregates market.
All the process functions of the range are electric, significantly reducing the use of hydraulic oil needed in the crushing operations. All Lokotrack EC range units can be powered with external electricity.
In its Lokolaunch event in Tampere, Finland, Metso launched the first two products of the new EC range. Lokotrack LT400J is a 68-ton mobile jaw crusher designed for the primary crushing of hard rock and recycled aggregates. Lokotrack LT350C is a 50-ton mobile cone crusher for secondary and tertiary crushing.

To reach high capacity, LT350C is equipped with the new Nordberg HP350e cone crusher, while LT400J counts on the proven Nordberg C120 jaw crusher. The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) announced that it will hit the road this summer for an unprecedented initiative to tell the story of the U.S. equipment manufacturing industry and celebrate the 2.3 million men and women who help build, power and feed the world.
The “AEM Manufacturing Express” will launch on July 1, 2024, at Weiler Inc. in Knoxville, Iowa, and travel across the country through October when it will wrap up with a finale event at Komatsu in Milwaukee, Wis. The tour will visit more than 20 states, with stops planned at more than 80 equipment manufacturers in communities across the Midwest, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.
Participating manufacturers include iconic companies such as AGCO Corporation, CNH Industrial, Caterpillar Inc., Cummins Inc., Deere & Company, Komatsu, Kubota, The Toro Company, Vermeer Corporation and Volvo Group.

Spring is in the air, so it’s time to gear up for a busy land clearing season. As you shift from snow clearing to mowing and mulching tasks, ensuring your equipment is in top shape is essential.
Following are some tips from Diamond Mowers to make sure your attachments and carrier are ready for peak performance.
Equipment downtime is the bane of most contractors, negatively impacting productivity and profitability. To avoid disruptions and delays, it’s essential to maintain and stock up on those parts that take the greatest abuse to minimize downtime and avoid operational interruptions.
• Mulching and Stump Grinder Teeth: Teeth are one of the hardest working components of any attachment and may need to be replaced multiple times throughout a season depending on equipment use. These parts are subject to constant wear from processing vegetation and direct ground engagement, so it is crucial to maintain and replace them. Diamond’s four-point hardened steel teeth, for instance, can be removed and sharpened, or rotated directly on a mulching attachment, to increase efficiency and productivity. Twin Chisel planer teeth are even easier to maintain because they can be sharpened while mounted to a drum mulcher. Twin Maul carbide teeth and Greenteeth Wearsharp stump grinder tooth require no maintenance at all. Simply replace them when they are damaged or worn down.
• Flail Knives and Rotary Blades: If you own a flail mower, rotary mower or brush cutter, maintaining blades is critical for optimal performance and longevity. Inspect flail knives and blades before each use, looking for signs of wear, damage or debris that may be stuck. If you notice any significant damage, such as bends or cracks, it’s time to replace them.
• Hydraulic Connections: Inspect hoses, connections and couplers before each use. Tighten any loose connections and replace any damaged or worn parts.
• Mounting Hardware: Check all mounting hardware for correct torque values. If any are loose, re-torque them to their proper specifications, and replace those that are worn or broken.
• Spindles: Replace oil and grease in spindles every 500 hours or yearly. Make sure all spindle bolts feature the correct torque values and re-torque them if needed.
Because dirt and grime can damage components, a simple cleaning of both the interior and exterior of your carrier will go a long way to ensuring your equipment is ready for the busy season ahead.
• Clean Your Equipment: A thorough wash to remove dirt and debris will help keep your equipment in excellent shape. Pay special attention to the undercarriage and control systems for any clutter left over from the previous season.
• Perform Maintenance Checks: After months of sitting idle, it is important to conduct a thorough inspection of all filters, fluids and coolant levels, and to lubricate all machine components. Refer to your operator’s manual for specific instructions for your carrier.
• Check Batteries and Electrical Components: Test the battery and verify that electrical elements like lights, wipers, and flashers are working correctly. Ensure a secure connection and sufficient charge.
• Test Primary Functions: After performing maintenance work, make sure steering controls, parking brakes, safety features and horns are all operational. Any abnormalities should be addressed promptly.
Once your equipment is clean and functioning properly, perform a walk-around inspection to check the following components:
• Lights, Reflectors, Tires and Tracks: Check for damage and ensure proper tension, pressure and cleanliness on all lamps, lenses, tires and tracks. Well-maintained tires and tracks are also essential for fuel efficiency and a smooth ride.
• Windshields and Glass: Keep these surfaces clean to ensure complete visibility during operation. Stock up on safety glass as needed according to manufacturer specifications.

Rototilt, which develops and manufactures tiltrotators for the global market, is investing heavily in the future by expanding its factory in Vindeln, Sweden. The extensive investment includes the development of a modern robotic welding facility at a cost of approximately SEK 35 million.
“Even though the economic situation is challenging right now, we believe in continued growth and require greater flexibility and capacity in order to meet our customers’ high demands. This investment is a step to improve our position, enabling us to deliver with speed and precision, which is crucial in our market segment,” said Anders Jonsson, CEO
A new robotic welding system is currently being introduced, linking up handling robots and welding robots. The investment is generating customer value by providing opportunities for improved delivery times and quality. The construction project, which was launched in October 2023, includes an expansion of the factory totalling 11,625 sq. ft., spread over two floors.
The new welding section will be ready for final inspection in May 2024.
“The global situation is placing new demands on us, and we are dealing with this at the same time as attempting to develop our business. We are now creating the conditions to improve our delivery precision, which is something we are constantly focusing on, since we know how important it is for our customers,” said Jonsson.
Rototilt’s production facility is powered by fossil-free energy, and the extended factory is being built with an advanced energy recovery system. The heat from the welding process is recovered via the ventilation system, thereby reducing both energy consumption and the climate footprint.
The factory’s primary heating source is district heating, which is produced from local biofuel.
“The new welding facility will contribute to a lower proportion of goods transport. All
the elements that are contributing are important, and we are constantly thinking about how we can reduce our climate footprint,” said Ida Skaring, sustainability strategist at Rototilt.
During the autumn 2023, Rototilt also invested in one of Sweden’s largest private charging parks, with 178 vehicle spaces outside the factory in Vindeln. All the parking spaces are equipped with sockets for engine heaters as well as electric car charging.
“We are proud to be creating a greener workplace and to be supporting the ongoing transition to sustainable travel. Half of our employees commute from other municipalities, and this development is making it easier for anyone who drives an electric car to get to the workplace. The Independent Equipment Dealers Association (IEDA) has awarded $5,000 scholarships to three students enrolled in three different post-secondary heavy equipment repair programs this spring.
This year’s recipients are Joseph Briseno at Texas State Technical College in Waco; Sam Horstman at Western Technical College in LaCrosse, Wisconsin; and Caleb Tripp at Southeastern Illinois College — Diesel Technology in Harrisburg.
These students were selected from 27 applicants by a team of IEDA member dealers.
“Our mission is to support independent used equipment dealers and companies worldwide by providing resources, education and fostering ethical business practices. We all need technicians in this industry.
“Offering scholarships to deserving students is our way of giving back as an association and supporting the future of the industry,” he added.

Manitou has launched a new Woodcracker tree saw with grapple configuration for its rotating telehandler product line that will significantly improve performance and productivity in tree and limb removal operations — particularly in urban areas and roadside land management applications.
The Woodcracker tree saw with grapple is compatible with three Manitou rotating telehandlers — the MRT 2260, MRT 2660 and MRT 3060 Vision+. Built from extremely highstrength steel and capable of cutting tree branches and trunks up to 29 in. in diameter, the new Manitou tree saw rotates into position to cut, hold and deliver each limb. When the opportunity to partner with the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) presented itself in 2021, it was a no-brainer for Bobcat Company.
Why not support a nonprofit organization that is committed to rescuing man’s best friend and developing them into life-saving resources? After all, Bobcat knows a thing or two about tough animals.

Due to agreements between counties, cities and states, these skilled canine teams can be deployed regionally and nationally to make sure that when disaster strikes, no one is left behind.
By accompanying firefighters and other first responders, dogs become a precious, life-saving resource that can search quickly and safely in areas where their human counterparts cannot.SDF recruits dogs from around the country that are rescued from abuse or abandonment. It’s not uncommon for these dogs to be high energy, tenacious and bold — making them ideal for search and rescue situations but not ideal for a family environment.

Creating simulations for these intense training sessions is essential, and the SDF maintenance team received enough donations to purchase a Bobcat T750 compact track loader to perform facility maintenance tasks like brush clearing, gravel road maintenance and perhaps most importantly: keeping the disaster simulation sites safe and challenging for dogs.
A portion of the proceeds from the Bobcat pet bandana, dog leash, dog collar and dog toy will help support the SDF.
The Bobcat T750 can move rubble and create a stimulating opportunity for each dog on a mock rescue mission. If the courses aren’t occasionally rearranged, the dogs can remember the area where the volunteer victims previously hid.
Upon completion of screening and testing criteria, the dogs are trained to channel that high energy and drive into life-saving skills.
Since 1996, SDF has trained more than 200 certified first responder and canine teams that have deployed to 246 disasters and missing person searches around the globe. For more than 25 years, SDF and its dog handlers have worked to save lives during Hurricanes Katrina, Harvey and Irma; California mudslides; the World Trade Center attacks; the Oklahoma City bombing; and earthquakes in Nepal, Haiti and Japan.
To ensure that canine teams are prepared for those real-life situations, several months of training and simulation are required.
When dogs are ready, they receive 8 to 10 months of professional training before joining a handler team. By design, this means dogs come to handlers already trained to basic certification level — reducing the time it takes for the handler/dog search team to attain FEMA Advanced Certification from two or more years to just 8 to 12 months.
At SDF’s National Training Center, dogs must learn to crawl through tunnels, maneuver on ladders, navigate unstable surfaces and detect human scent beneath debris. After a

They use attachments for clearing and new development, along with cleaning up downed trees after storms and any other project that requires a powerful, agile machine.
“Bobcat’s support is helping our teams reach the highest skill levels needed for certification and maintain deployment readiness,” Sanders said.
The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation was founded by Wilma Melville, a retired schoolteacher who was deployed to the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 with her FEMA-certified search dog, Murphy. Once home, she was determined to do something about America’s severe shortage of canine disaster search teams and created the nonprofit to address it. Since then, SDF has recruited, trained and deployed hundreds of rescued dogs that are committed to uniting victims with their families.
One might say it takes a tough animal to know a tough animal, which explains why Bobcat is so supportive of the SDF mission.

Pettibone Traverse/Lift LLC is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Cary-Lift, which became the world’s first forward-reaching, rough-terrain material handler upon its invention by Phil LaTendresse in 1949.

Volvo Trucks North America has announced a significant advancement in its sustainability efforts by fueling newly assembled trucks with Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a renewable fuel, as they depart from the Volvo Trucks New River Valley Assembly Operations (NRV) in Dublin, Va.
All Volvo trucks for the North American market are produced at the NRV plant, including the all-new Volvo VNL that will begin production later this summer. This initiative is part of Volvo Trucks’ broader strategy to decarbonize the industry through a three-pillar approach: enhancing internal combustion engine (ICE) efficiency and drop-in renewable fuels to make the largest immediate emissions reductions while continuing to scale the Class 8 Volvo VNR Electric and developing hydrogen fuel cell trucks.

Unlike first-generation biofuels, these raw sources are processed using a sophisticated hydrotreatment to achieve high levels of purity allowing HVO to be stored, used, pumped, and handled virtually the same way as fossil-based diesel products. Because HVO is hydrogenated it doesn’t contain oxygen and does not present the challenges of first-generation biofuels, including biodiesel, relating to extreme temperature and storage. This is an added benefit of HVO as it does not require separate stor-
age or fueling infrastructure. HVO, often referred to as renewable diesel, can be used interchangeably with petroleum diesel. Renewable diesel at any blend up to a maximum of 100 percent (RD100) that conforms to ASTM D975 or EN15940 will not adversely affect engine or aftertreatment performance or durability.
“The internal combustion engine has more than 100 years of research and development and established support in the industry. It must be part of the decarbonization journey and major, immediate decarbonization possibilities exist by using renewable fuels, including HVO and hydrogen,” said Johan Agebrand, director of product marketing, Volvo Trucks North America.

The Kabgard, offered in a black or white powder coat finish, is bundled with the mounting brackets and fasteners, giving the user everything needed to install and mount to the service body. Built-in tie-down points secure cargo. The rack, designed to protect the cab’s rear window from damage, is available in two sizes to accommodate either a singlerear-wheel or a dual-rear-wheel service body.
The Service Body Ladder Rack has built-in tie-down points for cargo, along with built-in grab handles for added stability when climbing in and out of the truck bed. Stellar Industries, a 100-percent employee-owned andoperated manufacturer of high-quality mechanic trucks, cranes, tire service trucks, hooklifts, trailers and service truck and van accessories, has donated a UR10 collaborative robot to North Iowa Area Community College’s (NIACC) Industrial Automation and Robotics Technology (IART) program. The collaborative robot, also known as a cobot, has a value of $130,000.
Stellar has partnered with NIACC in the past, including participation with the IART program’s advisory board. The UR10 cobot will be used in all three of NIACC’s robotics classes to help students gain valuable skills coding robot labs.
“I can hardly put into words just how important a donation like this is. It’s everything. Without generous gifts like this, we can’t keep up with technology's demand,” said
Bob Franken, NIACC Industrial Automation and Robotics Technology instructor. “This gives us the tools and resources we need to allow students to learn the everchanging landscape in automation and robotics.”
This UR10 from Stellar now puts the program at 21 robotic units. The addition will allow NIACC to expand its course selection options for robotics, allowing for the IART program to offer more opportunities for more students.

Global OEM Wacker Neuson Group has strengthened its ties with Trackunit by agreeing to extend its partnership agreement for another five years.
The deal is effectively a renewal of a previous five-year agreement but deepens the relationship between the manufacturer of compact and light equipment products for construction and agriculture and global technology platform player Trackunit.
“We’re excited to be strengthening our relationship with Trackunit by another five years. Trackunit is a key partner for us when it comes to delivering a customer benefit oriented platform for technology and data management,” said Wacker Neuson Group CSO Alexander Greschner. “With five years already in the bank, we’ve developed a strong bond. Trackunit delivers a future-oriented and flexible solution that we can easily integrate into our digital platforms.”
As part of the extension, Wacker Neuson Group, with its North
American headquarters in Menomonee Falls, Wis., and is part of the Works With Trackunit program, will be able to use Trackunit’s Kin for the first time. Kin, which was launched on the market in 2021, connects nonpowered equipment and attachments to the ecosystem and approximately 15,000 new items will become part of Trackunit’s Bluetooth network in the first year as part of the deal.
In addition, Wacker Neuson also will be able to onboard more than 50,000 Battery One units to the network.
“This delivers a Bluetoothenabled solution that will greatly expand our connectivity and help us to increase efficiency through better insight into idling and other downtime factors,” said Alexander Greschner. “We are already selling a lot of battery-powered equipment, and this will help us keep track on those smaller pieces of equipment and power units. The March 2024 not seasonally adjusted national construction unemployment rate was 5.4 percent, down 0.2 percent from the previous year, according to a state-by-state analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released May 2 by Associated Builders and Contractors.
The analysis also found that 29 states had lower unemployment rates over the same period, two states were unchanged (New Jersey and Oklahoma) and 19 states were higher. National NSA payroll construction employment was 275,000 higher than in March 2023. Since February 2022, seasonally adjusted construction employment has exceeded its pre-pandemic peak of 7.6 million. As of March 2024, SA payroll construction employment stood at 8.2 million.
Indicating the relative tightness of the construction employment market in many states, this March, 31 states had lower construction unemployment rates compared to March 2019 (pre-pandemic) and 19 states had higher rates.
“Despite elevated interest rates, construction activity and employment continue at a healthy pace,” said Bernard Markstein, president and chief economist of Markstein Advisors, who conducted the analysis for ABC. “Builders are hiring as they seek to replace retiring workers and anticipate winning future work. Nonresidential construction activity and employment continue to benefit from federal funding and tax incentives for manufacturers, and funding
for state and local infrastructure projects is strong.
In March, every state had lower estimated construction unemployment rates than in February. The last time that all 50 states had lower rates than in the previous month was in May 2018.
The five states with the lowest estimated NSA construction unemployment rates for March were:
• Maryland, 1 percent
• North Dakota, 1.5 percent
• Utah, 1.7 percent
• Iowa, 2.2 percent
• Georgia, 2.3 percent
North Dakota, Iowa and Georgia each posted their lowest March NSA estimated construction unemployment rate on record. Utah notched its second-lowest March rate, behind 2022’s 1.6 percent rate. Maryland had its second-lowest March rate, behind last year’s 0.8 percent rate.
The five states with the highest March estimated NSA construction unemployment rates were:
• 46. Illinois, 8.6 percent
• 47. New Jersey, 9.3 percent
• 48. Connecticut and Vermont (tie), 10.2 percent

At a tour of the construction project, Gov. JB Pritzker said, “Investments like the rehabilitation of the McClugage Bridge ... will not only support freight routes on Illinois’ roadways but make day-to-day life easier for Peoria and East Peoria families who use this bridge to get groceries, see their doctor or visit the pharmacy.”
The state may have made history when the arch section of the new bridge was moved from its assembly area and lowered into place Dec. 19. The 652-ft.-wide by 130-ft.-longhigh arch was moved roughly
300 ft. by tugboats and barges to the bridge piers, making it possibly the “tallest object moved by tugboats on the Illinois River.”
Once it neared the piers, cables and winches were used to position the massive section, IDOT said. When the 7-million-lb. arch section arch was correctly positioned, water was pumped into the barges to weigh them down and lower the arch into its final location.
The new deck bridge, more than twice the width of the old structure, incorporates a tied-arch design and will include a third lane to better accommodate current volumes and anticipated growth in the region with
improved ramps at Illinois 29 and 116 to eliminate frequent stopping and facilitate smoother traffic flow. A path for pedestrians and bicyclists with a river overlook and trailheads on both sides of the bridge also will be added.
With the arch now in place, finishing touches still to be completed on the eastbound bridge include setting the remaining beams; perfecting the bridge deck parapets, and barrier wall; and ensuring the seamless reconstruction of the bridge over IL 29, IDOT said. At the same time, additional project features are under way, including multi-use paths, trailhead parking lots, fresh pavement on the East Peoria side and the installation of highway lighting on the bridge.
“The eastbound McClugage Bridge is one of the state’s signature bridges and a major cog in the economy of the Peoria area, but it’s long overdue for replacement,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omar Osman. “Bridges connect communities, get you to a job and keep you and your family safe. Under Gov. Pritzker’s leadership, IDOT is delivering historic improvements all over the state just like the McClugage Bridge project.”
The final task on the southern McClugage project will be the removal of the existing eastbound bridge at a date to be determined.

Competition for skilled trades workers is at an all-time high, said staffing firm Skinner Construction Services.
Contractors are devoting a lot of time to exploring new ways to hire. Some are boosting compensation, others investing in professional development.
“Construction workers in this landscape are empowered to select employers who support their career growth and align with their values,” blogged Skinner.
What’s considered the hottest construction job titles these days depends on who produces the list.
What’s consistent is the fact that the highest paying in-demand jobs don’t require a college degree. For young job seekers, that opens more doors to strong career choices and is why the job security that skilled labor currently offers is so attractive.
Continuing labor shortages worsened by disruptions from the COVID pandemic, have created more competition for talent, said McKinsey & Co.
Add to that the fact that more construction workers are retiring each year and the industry is constantly working to attract young people to fill their places. As a result, wages for skilled trade jobs have risen by more than 20 percent since the first quarter of 2020, noted the global management consultant.
“Demand for skilled tradespeople is expected to increase over the next decade and remain high in the U.S.,” said McKinsey.

The construction career field is wide open for skilled workers. Many jobseekers are writing their tickets to stable employment, high pay and top-notch benefits.
The consulting firm attributes this to infrastructure needs, a surge in real estate redevelopment and investments in renewable energy.
Construction is among the three most in-demand job fields that companies are hiring for this year. In the mix are manufacturing and plumbing.
Specific titles Payscale and ZipRecruiter shared with CNBC include construction superintendent, production manager and journeyman plumber.
ZipRecruiter tracked a 16-percent increase in all of these jobs between October 2023 and March 2024.
Construction superintendents have seen the largest uptick in demand, with openings surging more than 128 percent, according to the CNBC report.
The survey found other high-paying trade jobs that have seen slightly less demand, “but are still hiring at a good clip, include fleet managers.”
Construction careers, prioritizing skills over degrees, offer some the best chances to earn six figures without a college degree, said Payscale’s Ruth Thomas.
Though more companies are dropping degree require-
labor demands, noted Jones.
Plus, the construction industry bypassed the pandemic layoff hits that many other industries saw. So, it recovered jobs more quickly, said Jones.
“Construction employment had a strong bounce-back after lockdowns and other restrictions began to ease in the late spring of 2020,” he said.
And the market has only continued to grow since. In fact, construction hiring passed preCOVID levels three months before the economy as a whole.
Jones predicts industry technological changes will streamline many processes, in turn changing the composition of jobs in the industry.
“As the industry modernizes, many professions set for the greatest rate of growth are in fact jobs not commonly associated with construction,” he blogged.
Demand for construction market research analysts, software developers, logisticians and financial managers is projected to be robust in the coming years.
Other in-demand construction jobs include masonry workers, health and safety specialists, logisticians and wind turbine installers and maintenance technicians.

Skilled trade workers “are striking gold in the job market” said job placement firm Skinner in a spring report. The company attributes the strong job market to singlefamily housing and industrial construction which are currently in high demand.
“Trillion-dollar public infrastructure projects are taking shape,” said Skinner, also crediting an expected “historic” boom in the remodeling market.
“These days, it seems like every industry needs tradespeople — and as the skills gap grows, pay may rise as fast as competition.”
The company believes trade workers are experiencing some of the fastest growing wages in the country. As a result, contractors are strategizing to recruit high-demand workers, said Skinner, “especially if a tightening budget is a concern.”
Skilled trade workers can take this time to shift into muchneeded roles, the company advised. This are the firm’s top in-demand construction jobs:
• Electricians
“Electricians are needed for practically every building construction project — but that’s far from where the demand ends,” said the company.
As the United States goes green, trade workers will be key hires for charging station and transmission line installs. Maintenance brings demand as well.

to replace the Upper Free Bridge across a narrow stretch of Upper Peoria Lake. The two-lane bridge was completed in 1948 following WWII. It allowed traffic to travel east and west across the Illinois River. The McClugage Bridge has been repaired several times since 1964, with a major rehabilitation in 1999. In 1982, the westbound bridge was added immediately to the north of the existing bridge featuring three lanes with a similar look and style to the original McClugage Bridge.
Upon completion of the eastbound work, the westbound McClugage will undergo a major rehabilitation including repairs, painting and a new deck. IDOT has identified $54.8 million for the project. The westbound McClugage is less than half the age of the original McClugage and will continue serving the region along with the new eastbound bridge.

“We’re also seeing ongoing demand for low-voltage technicians, driven by new fiber optic networks, alarm systems, rewiring projects and other work.”
Skinner believes that’s why the BLS expects the electrician job outlook to grow much faster than average through 2032.
• Pipefitters
Industrial development is driving demand for pipefitters, said Skinner, as semiconductor businesses and automakers build facilities.
Predicted resurgences of oil and gas production could boost demand even further, believes Skinner.
“We’re already seeing pipefitter salaries exceed what electricians make, and turnover and retirements will increase job openings and pay in the U.S.”
• Ironworkers
Where there’s new infrastructure, there will be ironworkers. These professionals “are expected to thrive in the coming years,” said Skinner.
Federal funding is driving the growth of transportation, bridge and highway projects, further ramping up ironworker hiring, the firm noted.
“You may have heard masonry is a dying trade, but demand for this traditional skill isn’t going away,” said Skinner.
Bricklayers, stonemasons and other mason workers — crucial for building fences, walls, walkways and more — are still in short supply.
Simply put, schools and companies still struggle to build interest in masonry among the next generation of workers, said the firm.
“The aging workforce, as well as the growing number of masons switching careers, will keep the number of these skilled trade positions high.”
Citing the AGC, Skinner noted that bricklayers and cement masons are the most difficult tradespeople to recruit regionally.
Recognizing this, organizations are hosting workshops in hopes of closing the widening skills gap.
“Workers with the skills needed to fill mason positions now can find plenty of lucrative opportunities.”
Construction Coverage used BLS data to form its list of the fastest-growing jobs in the construction industry, across 190-plus occupations.
The list includes:
• Market research analysts and marketing specialists
“Software companies have transformed the construction industry in recent years by automating processes that used to require hours of manual work.”
The developer said the most noteworthy new products include takeoff, estimating, construction accounting and field service management software.
This job category is expected to see 8 percent growth over the next 10 years, adding 1,300 new workers.
• Electricians
The 10-year projected employment growth for electricians is more than 8.5 percent, resulting in a projected employment growth of 46,400 over that period.
• Telecommunications line installers and repairers
An employment increase of 9.3 percent over 10 years is expected for line installers and repairers. This will add 2,900 workers to the job field.
• Occupational health and safety specialists
The 10-year employment growth forecast is 11.9 percent for health and safety specialists. The job field will grow by 1,900 workers.
• Logisticians
Logisticians will see a 10-year projected employment growth of +12.1 percent. The job field will draw 200 workers over that time span.
• Radio, cell and tower installers and repairers
Over a 10-year period this job category is projected to grow by 13.6 percent. It will bring 300 workers into the construction market.
• Solar photovoltaic installers
The 10-year projected employment growth for solar installers is 29.0 percent, seeing 4,800 more workers take this job title.
• Wind turbine service technicians
Over the next 10 years, the job of wind turbine technician will grow by 50.8 percent, adding 900 more workers over that span.
Skinner said beyond these high-demand positions, the shortage of skilled trade workers across all fields and roles continues.
“Companies that rely on tradespeople need to start stepping up their recruiting efforts and compensation packages.”
