Excavating for Science in Former Gold Mine Murray Kapust Photo
This cavern was built to house an experiment at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. It is seen here just after shotcrete was sprayed on the walls for ground support.

For well over 100 years, the Homestake mine in South Dakota was the largest and deepest gold mine in North America, producing almost
50 million oz. of the precious metal until its closure in 2002. Now, the extensive maze of caverns at the site, in the state’s beautiful Black Hills, is being transformed into a laboratory designed to unlock the mysteries of some of the smallest
particles in the universe. The Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), is based in the suburbs see MINE page 80

The Michigan Department of Transportation began work this spring on the fourth in a series of experimental pavement projects designed to determine if thicker pavement equals a longer lifespan. The experiments grew out of Public Act 175, which was passed by the state legislature in 2015 and established the Roads Innovation Task Force. Two projects on I-131 near Grand Rapids are complete, a third on I-69 in Flint is nearing completion and work on I-475, also in Flint, recently got under way. The projects compare 20-year concrete vs. 30-year concrete; 20-year hot mix asphalt (HMA) vs. 30-year HMA and 20-year Work proceeds on the reconstruction of I-69 in Flint, Mich. The state HMA vs. 50 year. Department of Transportation is using this and other road projects to see PAVING page 78
