Pfizer has begun construction on its massive, $450 million pharmaceutical production campus in the western Michigan town of Portage.

Pfizer has begun construction on the latest expansion of its massive, $450 million pharmaceutical production campus in the western Michigan town of Portage.

Company officials, Michigan political and regional leaders were on hand March 31 for the groundbreaking ceremony of the new production facility — one that is expected to bring hundreds of new jobs to the region.

According to a press release from Pfizer, the new multistory, 420,000-sq.-ft. factory will be “one of the world’s most technically advanced sterile injectable pharmaceutical production facilities, known as modular aseptic processing.”

Pfizer and its guests at the Portage campus celebrated both the expansion and the renewed hope that the company’s COVID-19 vaccine has brought to people around the world.

According to MLive, Mike McDermott, Pfizer’s president of global supply, told the small crowd gathered at the groundbreaking that the new building represents another breakthrough for science.

“This investment solidifies Pfizer’s focus and our purpose, which are breakthroughs that change patients’ lives,” he said. “To think about the building that will go up quickly behind us and the breakthroughs that will come from that investment — it’s just stunning to think what’s possible.”

As many as 450 new jobs could be brought to the new Portage facility, located at the global manufacturing campus in Kalamazoo County. The site is less than 10 mi. from the city of Kalamazoo.

Construction of the building, adjacent to a 98,000-sq.-ft. warehouse near the corner of Romence and Portage roads, will begin in the coming weeks, with a completion sometime in 2023, MLive reported.

Pfizer expects the facility to be in operation in 2025, a company spokesperson said. Plans call for the new plant to initially manufacture the pain medicine known as Dynastat, which the pharmaceutical company supplies to overseas markets.

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow spoke to the audience assembled at the building site, telling them that the new jobs that Pfizer will bring to the area are one reason to celebrate, along with the ongoing COVID-19 vaccination effort.

“That’s a very big deal,” Stabenow noted. “We are excited that Pfizer is continuing to be on the leading edge of advanced manufacturing technology, which are meeting the demands for products, and that you will help Michigan remain a leader in creating life-saving medication. Congratulations. This is about hope. It is about science. It is about the future.”

McDermott added that Pfizer is lucky to be a part of the Portage area, adding that its employees have pride in where they live and work.

“We’re fortunate to be in a community [and] in a state that supports our investments and has high quality colleagues that we can hire and a good pipeline out of the universities,” he told MLive. “So, this has really been a wonderful place for us to do our work.”

The idea of expanding the Pfizer operations in Portage has been around a few years.

In 2018, a then-$465 million facility was announced for the campus, according to MLive. The news outlet reported that Mayor Patricia Randall and others have wholeheartedly backed the effort. Projected revenue to the city over 20 years was estimated to total $26.7 million, Randall said, and the economic benefit to the larger region is estimated to total $49.2 million in six years.

Pfizer was granted a tax cut for the expansion, which she and other city leaders argued was worth it to secure the economic benefit for the region, according to MLive.

The pharmaceutical giant, which manufactures a variety of products, worked with German partner company BioNTech to create a COVID-19 vaccine that was the first to win U.S. regulatory approval in 2020. Shipments of the vaccines first left Pfizer’s Portage production facility on Dec. 13. Since then, millions of doses have been distributed across both the United States and the world.  CEG

Despite Challenges of 2020, Buyers Products Expands Its Headquarters

Buyers Products, a manufacturer in the work truck industry, is expanding its headquarters. The project includes 280,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space and is on track to be complete by the end of 2021.

Despite the challenges 2020 brought, Buyers charged forward with the expansion. Company management knew that essential businesses across the country relied on its products to operate, and the new warehouse is a key part of ensuring those businesses have reliable access to the truck, trailer and snow and ice equipment they need.

“We are one-hundred percent committed to getting our customers what they need,” said Gary Kadow, warehouse operations manager of Buyers. “We built our reputation on our ability to quickly and consistently deliver high-quality products at competitive rates, and that doesn’t change just because there’s a pandemic going on.”

The new warehouse, combined with other investments Buyers has made in robotic welding, precision laser-cutting and fabrication automation, will allow the company to develop, manufacture and distribute equipment more efficiently. These advancements allow Buyers to stay competitive in a global economy while developing new equipment for work trucks, vans and trailers of all sizes.

“We’re constantly looking for new challenges to tackle,” said Brian Seeley, operations manager of Buyers. “We ask our customers and the hardworking folks that use our equipment every day ‘What do you need?’ and then we use their answers to guide everything we do. ‘Good enough’ isn’t good enough — we want to be the definitive one-stop-shop for truck and trailer equipment.”

In the last few years, Buyers has released a multitude of new products based on its conversations with dealers and end users. Two of the most exciting among these new releases are the SnowDogg VXXII 10.5-ft. v-plow and an extended line of backpack and Lpack truck tool boxes, according to the manufacturer.

The SnowDogg VXXII was a response to increasing market demand for a v-plow for Class 4-6 trucks. Buyers spent more than two years designing, testing and iterating before it landed on a design it was happy with.

“It took a few tries, but it was worth it,” said Scott Moorman, director of snow and ice equipment of Buyers. “The VXXII is our biggest, strongest vplow ever. I couldn’t be happier with the results, and I’m immensely grateful to our engineers, our field testers and everyone else who poured countless hours into this project.”

The new backpack and L-pack truck tool boxes came from a similar origin; customers loved the existing Buyers offerings, but they needed additional options to cover different applications. They needed more sizes and more material and finish options.

With those requests in mind, Buyers set its steel and aluminum manufacturing divisions, guided by product management and engineering, to work. The result is a massive influx of new styles with the strength and assortment of features that Buyers is known for.

Hitachi Engages Distributors in Its First TV Production Virtual Dealer Meeting

While Zoom meetings and Webinars seem to be the preferred method of meetings in the COVID-19 era, Hitachi Construction Machinery Loaders America Inc. (HCMA) decided to step it up and produce a full-on TV production virtual meeting.

With several topics of discussion on the agenda, there was concern over a 3hour virtual meeting and keeping dealer personnel engaged. The solution was to make this meeting top quality, engaging and, most importantly, a platform for dealer personnel to provide input on various topics.

“This platform gave us the opportunity to expand our audience. Normally, in face-to-face dealer meetings, dealers are represented by executives tasked with taking the messages back to their team. We chose to expand our audience to include all dealer personnel allowing us to not only reach key personnel, but to encourage input from all members of the dealer team,” said Sam Shelton, marketing manager.

“Our meeting theme, Solutions Simplified, symbolizes the overall objective of many of the initiatives presented in this meeting.”

The 300-plus attendees participated for the full 3 hours, staying engaged with polls, videos, trivia contests, customer testimonials and Q&A from the field. The topics were a mix of new announcements, product and program launches, and future initiatives mixed with topics suggest by the audience through the pre-meeting survey. The result was a mix of informative and educational content.

The meeting also set the stage to announce the 2020 MVPs and Dealer Award Winners.

Earning the President’s Award, an award based on market share growth, were All Island Equipment, Chappell Tractor Sales Inc., Frank Martin Sons Inc., Link-Belt MidAtlantic Construction Company, Westchester Tractor Inc. and APCO Equipment Corporation.

Earning the Chairman’s Award, an award based on market share, growth, and customer engagement, were RECO Equipment Inc., Great Southern Equipment Company and Garton Tractor Inc.

Building a pop-up TV studio on campus to host this inaugural venture required participation from several departments, including the IT team. The production team from RIVE, based in Washington, D.C., produced remotely from Washington, D.C.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; Boston, Mass.; and Atlanta, Ga., reaching an audience throughout the United States and Canada.

Attendees were treated to a parts facility and remanufacturing plant tour, as well as the Hitachi Construction Machinery primary global parts facility in Japan, and several of the manufacturing facilities world-wide.

“I want to thank our team for facilitating a great program and for our dealer network who had all of their different departments engaged throughout the meeting. This wasn’t designed as a one-way meeting. The technology gave us the opportunity to make everyone feel like they were in the room with us. It was a lot of fun and exceeded my expectations,” said Simon Wilson, senior sales manager.

New Technology for Construction Gear, Wearables Enhances Safety, Production

WEARABLES from page 8

Cooler Heads Prevail

A self-described “construction junkie,” project manager Shane Hedmond blogged recently about destressing from the top down.

At the Consumer Technology Association’s CES 2021, Feher Research unveiled an air-conditioned hard hat (ACHH).

It is designed to reduce the ambient temperature up to 22 F.

“Feher Research Inc. has taken a standard-looking hard hat and turned it into the world’s first and only selfcontained, portable air-conditioned headgear,” wrote Hedmond. “This isn’t like a standard A/C unit with refrigerants running through copper lines, though.”

It uses the Peltier effect, the same thermoelectric technology used to cool the water coolers often found in offices.

Hedmond explained the hard hat can be powered in multiple ways, chiefly via lithium ion battery.

“According to the current specs, this battery will provide two hours of run time.”

If you work a more stationary job, the hard hat can be plugged in for continuous run time.

“The ACHH is impressively light weighing in at 18.05 ounces. with the battery, only about 2 to 4 ounces more than a traditional hard hat,” wrote Hedmond.

He noted that though it must still pass ANSI standards for head wear before it pops up on job sites, it sounds promising.

“The adjustable head band of the hard hat is removed to make room for the components of the cooling system.”

The cooling system itself is sized like a baseball cap for optimum cooling effect.

Its designer, Steve Feher, believes in the benefits for the construction worker.

“The ACHH is sized like a hat and covers the user’s head with a unique air flow structure for maximum head cooling.”

This, he said also spreads any impact force over a larger scalp area than conventional hardhats.

“The conventional straps don't cover the entire scalp, in order to allow the scalp to breathe,” he said. “Any impact force is transferred to the user’s scalp with fewer square inches of area than the ACHH.”

He noted his design covers more area and provides sub-ambient air closely to the user’s head.

Power gloves improve grip strength and dexterity for construction workers. Soft exoskeletons designed for the hand, they support workers during grip-intensive and repetitive tasks.

Other PPE Gear Enhancements

Construction wearables are a trendy topic in general for making job sites safer and more productive.

There is a laundry list of new construction gear technology enhancing worker safety right now.

Start-up company Loomia has created feet-friendly, soft-heating soles that can be used in shoes. Heating levels in Loomia’s soles can be increased to help a worker power through frigid winter conditions.

The Halo is a 360-degree personal safety and task light that fits on any standard hard hat. Designed so workers can see and be seen, the light is installed by pressing down firmly and will stay on regardless of the task.

The Myo armband works with Brigit glasses to help workers multitask on the job site. Controlled by hand gestures, the two devices allow a worker to climb or dig without stopping the task to communicate with the crew.

The Flex ErgoSkeleton uses a posture pad to alert a worker if he or she is bending or lifting incorrectly or strenuously. Adjustment mechanisms are tailored to the worker’s height and size, and a sensor collects posture info in real-time.

MIT has created pressure sensors that weigh the level of contact between feet and shoes to ensure an even reading of load data. If what a worker is lifting is too heavy, the device lets him or her know to bring in backup.

That’s Progress

A construction site has changed a lot over the past few decades, noted Edmonson and Earnest.

“Construction sites will likely increase the use of advanced technologies,” they said.

Drones, exoskeletons, autonomous vehicles, remote-controlled mobile equipment, 3-D printing, and BIM are among the list. “These technologies are expected to increase productivity and quality while reducing the cost of construction projects.”

In addition, the new technologies can improve safety of workers for certain tasks.

New technologies could come with a potential risk, though, noted Edmonson and Earnest.

Injuries can happen when workers are not familiar with the technologies, especially during non-routine operating conditions.

“Hazards associated with the use of robots in construction could be significant because of ever-changing work environments,” they said.

The need for multiple skilled craftspeople working on a project, and multiple employers sharing a common worksite also were cited.

Edmonson and Earnest also consider the interactions among many pieces of automated equipment as a potential hazard factor.

“Employers should consider these types of issues and potential hazards when integrating new technologies into the workplace,” they said.  CEG

EXCAVATE from page 1

The 52-acre site for the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital (GLWACH), located within the installation’s main post. It is northeast of the existing 450,000-sq.-ft. hospital built in 1965, which will be demolished, with renovation of the existing optical fabrication lab and improvements to the parking facilities, after the new hospital is delivered.

Paul Neidlein, JE Dunn’s Midwest region president, said that the project will create around 4,000 construction jobs over the next four years.

Since June, efforts have concentrated on relocation and enhancement of site utility infrastructure, being done by LaClede Electrical Cooperative and Omega Pipeline LLC, and earth work and water/sanitary/storm sewer installation by Bloomsdale Excavating Co. (BLEX), whose efforts do not require the demolition of existing buildings and only a few utilities to be relocated.

“Work on a military base has to be precise, consistent and properly communicated to all parties involved,” said Brandon Zehr, Bloomsdale’s project manager. “Our earthwork and site utilities involve crossing public streets in which advanced notification and communication must be followed. As with most utility projects, we’re navigating our way around existing utilities using as-builts provided by utility companies and engineering firms.

“Our project got kicked off in mid-June 2020 with installing a 66-inch storm sewer and 12-inch sanitary sewer — 15 feet deep — open cut through a public street over the course of 2.5 days by 24hour shifts,” he added. “Utility lines were installed and road was opened to traffic as scheduled. There are no soil or water issues at this time. Relict rock beds are present, and as planned, we are just now starting to get into this. Relict rock beds are generally leftover rock, while the remaining portions of rock layer has already weathered to the soils. These beds are irregular and vary greatly in depth and thickness.”

Bloomsdale’s scope of work is extensive, covering site clearing and demolition; erosion control; earthwork/grading (280,000 cu. yds. of dirt excavation); structural excavation; building excavating/backfill; subgrade stabilization (over-excavation with minus rock); installation of site utilities (storm, sanitary and water); construction of modular retaining walls; site concrete (sidewalk, curb and gutter, concrete paving); and topsoil import/final grading.

“The majority of our earthwork is being moved with Volvo A40 trucks with K-Tec scrapers,” said Zehr. “It took approximately two weeks to get the equipment mobilized and field offices set up.”

Site clearing took place prior to the March 31 to Nov. 1 Indiana bat season, which precluded operations due to the migration and protection of the habitat. Installation of the pipes started in mid-June. The majority of the excavation is being stockpiled on-site and near the site for future use by USACE.

“This is stakeless project and our curb machine — a GOMACO GT3300 paver — also runs on GPS, and you can put a sidewalk mold on it,” said Zehr. “We came back in mid-June to fully mobilize our equipment and materials, and that’s when we started the road crossing pipe work — the 66-inch and 12-inch sanitary pipe — that was our first order of business.

“On a good day we can excavate between 6,000 and 7,000 cubic yards,” he added. “We’re probably hauling a quarter mile to a waste site, where the material is being stockpiled. Once the waste area is full and we get closer to the south waste site, it will only be about 1,000-foot haul and we plan to excavate anywhere from 7,000 to 7,500 cubic yards a day.”

Soil-wise, the site contains a mix of lean/back clay and very rocky dirt, and as noted, relic rockbeds, a kind of sandstone sporadically encountered within the site.

“You can hit a portion of sandstone that’s 40,000 square feet and four feet deep and areas that are 100 square feet and eight foot in depth,” said Zehr. “We’re just starting into the rock now and we’re learning as we proceed. We expect to encounter large amounts of rock in the coming weeks. This can be rough on the equipment — some of it can be ripped, but it does affect our production. Once you get to more solid sandstone where it requires more passes or cannot be ripped, that is when we’ll use the hydraulic breaker and load it onto trucks.”

Site preparation has BLEX establishing the areas where the various underground infrastructures — water mains, wastewater lines, storm water drains, and electrical, natural gas and communications lines — will be installed.

“We use GPS CAD files to help us locate the structural excavation, footings, walls, building outline and roads” said Zehr. “Some layout yards and material storage sites have been established and new ones will be created over the next couple of months.”

The excavation is being forwarded by the use of K-Tec scraper pans attached to Volvo A45 trucks, Cat 349 and 336 dozers and Cat dozers — D7s, D8s and D9s, equipped with GPS systems.

“We’re out to 1/10 of an inch tolerance for our grading and about 0.5 an inch tolerance on all the tops of our manholes and storm and sanitary structures,” said Zehr. “We use GPS for all our grading and laying down of utilities. When we come up to grade it’s more important in seeing where you’re at, keeping track of your material, and how much is left to grade.”

Zehr is assisted by Jeremiah Harris, general superintendent; Clayton Stockton, Travis Pogue, foreman; Gary Lalumandier, VP of operations; and Craig Drury construction manager. The preconstruction team consisted of Bill Priesmeyer, VP of preconstruction and Luke Mangrum, project engineer.

“We’re looking to be dried up by the summer of 2022,” said Tommy Turner, JE Dunn’s senior project manager. “The building is structural steel with an architectural precast envelope.

BLEX expects that it will remove 292,000 cu. yds. of earth and rock.

Equipment-wise, BLEX is also using: John Deere rubber-tire loaders; Cat track loaders; Cat dozers; Cat and Komatsu excavators; Cat compactors; Cat motor graders; Volvo off-road trucks; K-Tec scraper pans attached to Volvo offroad trucks; a Superior broom street sweeper; and Cat skid steers.

“We have a full-time mechanic on-site and at this point we’ve been pretty lucky not to have any major breakdowns,” said Zehr.

The firm purchases and rents equipment from Fabick CAT; Erb Equipment Company for John Deere pieces; and Rudd Equipment for Volvo pieces. In Missouri and Kansas, JE Dunn purchases and rents equipment from local and regional dealerships.

“We have long-lasting relationships and a lot of history with them,” said Zehr.

JE Dunn has reserved some equipment already, which will be a mixture of company owned and rented pieces.

“We have strategies for cranes and other large pieces of equipment,” said Turner.  CEG
