Even Construction Companies Are at Risk of Serious Damage

Even in construction deepfakes are a very real, very costly issue. The result of a fake video or image could be lost income, employees walking off the job or even an indefinite halt to the entire project. Getting out in front of the deepfake as soon as you can is the key to saving not only your company’s reputation but the bottom line. A deepfake can result in reputational concerns over safety, a lack of trust for your company or call into question the integrity of a project. A deepfake creator can attack the budget and cost of a project, the project’s progress, the work timeline or the project’s resources. see VIDEOS page 24

Built more than 100 years ago, and connecting western and eastern Europe, the Oder Bridge on the German-Polish border in Kustrin has since been seen as a symbol of Europe coming together.

Over time, as bridges get used by heavy transport, they need replacing, and for such a historic railway bridge a special replacement was designed which was to be carried out with minimal disruption to the rail network.

The new Oder Bridge is an innovation — a network arch bridge with carbon hangers: its sleek, light and soft design, a fitting symbol of innovation, openness and connection.

The 2,300 ton, 590 ft. long bridge will help to increase line capacity and shorten travel times by allowing a maximum permissible speed of 75 mph.

Mammoet has plenty of experience in large-scale bridge launches, and the specialist heavy-lift equipment to move them as complete structures. This allows parallel work in the preparation phase and saves time.

This is why it was approached to install the bridge safely and with minimum disruption.

Depth-Defying Challenge

The bridge was assembled on the German side of the Oder and then moved, by Mammoet, as a whole structure across the river to its final installation position.

Koen Brouwers, project manager at Mammoet, said, “Most bridges are floated into place using a combination of Mammoet self-propelled modular transporters [SPMTs], launching plates and a pontoon. However, the use of a pontoon here was not possible due to the shallow, and changing, water levels of the river. Using a large crane, capable of positioning loads with a long reach, was also not feasible due to the weight and length of the bridge.”

Mammoet’s engineers therefore came up with a solution that avoided the use of both crane and pontoon. This solution allowed work to happen regardless of the water level and made the operation more flexible, safer and efficient.

After first jacking the bridge to 6.5 ft. and positioning the SPMTs underneath, it was transported to the edge of the river where it was positioned over the first of five temporary supports.

The bridge was then launched using a combination of specially designed launching plates and strand jacks that pulled the structure horizontally until it reached the next temporary support.

This process continued until the bridge reached the opposite side of the river. The SPMTs on the rear of the bridge were then removed and skid shoes were installed to slide the bridge into its final position.

At this point, the bridge was taken over by climbing jacks, which allowed the temporary supports to be removed and the bridge to be lowered down to its final resting height. Around 45 truckloads of specialist heavy equipment were mobilized for this project, including 96 axle lines of SPMTs, 26 launching plates, 10 climbing jacks and 2 strand jacks.

Plate Spinning

One of the key considerations for any bridge launch is the risk of deformation of its structure during the launch process, and this posed a big challenge for the engineering team.

To solve this, temporary supports with hydraulic cylinders were used at the quay

edges and in the water, as well as modified launching plates.

Jack van der Vloet, lead engineer at Mammoet, said, “It’s a big bridge and wind loads had to be considered. It has a large deflection, so the launching plates had to be modified. Typically, they swivel in two directions; however, in this case they had to swivel 360 degrees. This always gave us full control of the operation.”

The entire skidding equipment had to be customized to execute the operation technically. This meant that all launching plates were retrofitted with a spherical bearing so that they could be moved in all directions. During the launch the weight on each tower and cylinder was controlled to ensure a smooth and safe operation.

Due to the bridge’s size, all the available launching plates that Mammoet Europe had in stock had to be used. This was a technical and logistical challenge, but one easily handled thanks to its size and network.

New Method for Success

Infrastructure projects are crucial to support growing populations and economies, and as cities get busier these projects become more challenging.

Mammoet’s experience in large-scale bridge projects, and technical capabilities to move bridges as a complete structure, allows parallel work in the preparation phase and time and disruption savings.

Uwe Richter, senior sales manager at Mammoet, said, “It is very important to involve Mammoet at an early stage to support the preparation phase with technical and feasibility studies. This way, we can investigate the different execution options and decide on the best solution with the customer.”

Compared to other bridge projects where cranes or pontoons are used, Mammoet used a different method with modified launching plates.This smart solution can now be adapted for other bridge projects, where using a crane or pontoon is not possible or inefficient.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission (MHTC) has selected Millstone Weber as the apparent best-value proposer and design-build contractor of the first project in MoDOT’s Improve I-70 Program.

Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City will build a third lane in each direction and improve the 20-mi. stretch of Interstate 70 between U.S. 63 in Columbia and U.S. 54 in Kingdom City beginning in summer 2024. This $405 million project is the first of several projects which will widen and improve the I-70 corridor.

Missouri’s FY2024 budget from the General Assembly signed into law by Gov. Parson provides $2.8 billion in general revenue for the costs to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 mi. of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville.

“Today’s contractor selection marks the

beginning of this generational opportunity to improve I-70, which serves as a critical economic east-west corridor across Missouri,” said Terry Ecker, MHTC chairman. “This is a major challenge to deliver, but our MoDOTteam working alongside the private sector partners in engineering and construction will deliver.”

The selected team, including contractor Millstone Weber and designer Jacobs, competed against one other design-build team. The winning proposal showed not only an understanding of the engineering and design endeavors set out before the teams, but it also highlighted an understanding of the local, statewide and national importance of an improved I-70. The winning proposal includes new concrete pavement on all three lanes of I-70 in each direction for the 20-mi. section between Columbia and Kingdom City;widerinsideandoutsideshoulders;and improved interchange designs at the U.S. 63 and U.S. 54 interchanges at I-70. Additionally, throughout construction two

lanes of travel will be available for both directions of I-70 during peak hours.

The U.S. 63 and I-70 interchange proposal includes:

• Two new direct connection ramps (northbound U.S. 63 to westbound I-70 and eastbound I-70 to southbound U.S. 63)

• Four new roundabouts

The U.S. 54 and I-70 interchange proposal includes two new bridges and a new and improved interchange.

“We could not be more humbled and excited. This is a huge deal for everyone who drives this stretch of interstate and uses these interchanges. We will do everything in our power — and then some — to reward the confidence being shown in us to deliver this critical project,” said Bob Leingang, vice president and chief engineer of Millstone Weber.

Design-build is a project delivery method that combines both the design and construction phases into one contract. The selected contract team completes the design and con-

struction in parallel instead of in succession, which saves time and resources. The goals for the Columbia to Kingdom City project include:

• Deliver the project by Dec. 31, 2027, within the program budget of $405 million.

• Provide a third lane of travel for eastbound and westbound Interstate 70 from Columbia to Kingdom City.

• Improve I-70/US 63 and I-70/US 54 Interchanges providing for better traffic flow and movement of freight.

• Improve the interstate while modernizing the existing pavement and bridges.

• Minimize construction impacts through communication and construction staging while maintaining safety and mobility.

• Provide expanded employment opportunities to a diverse workforce.

FAE USAInc. attended the Midwest Sportsmen Classic in Shipshewana, Ind., Feb. 15 to 17, 2024. FAE had six of its most innovative models, including mulching heads, a PTO soil tiller and a remote-controlled tracked carrier. The company was the title sponsor of the event and took the opportunity to meet with valued dealers and end users of the Midwest region.

Among the machines on display were the SSL/ST forestry tiller, a Patrizio mulcher for tractors, the UML/SSL Sonic mulcher for skid steers, a BL1/SSL mulcher for skid steers and an RCU-55 remote-controlled tracked carrier.

FAE showcased its Sonic calibration technology at the show. Sonic technology, found on the UML/SSL Sonic mulcher for skid steers, constantly adjusts rotor speed and torque to achieve a 30 percent boost to efficiency. This boost to efficiency has made FAE’s Sonic technology a standout in the industry, according to the company.

The BL1/SSL, another mulcher for skid steers, features FAE’s Bite Limiter technology. FAE Bite Limiter heads use wear resistant steel profiles to limit the reach of teeth. This cuts down on power demand and promotes a consistent working speed, reducing fuel consumption and work stoppages from rotor stalling.

The SSL/ST and Patrizio represented FAE’s range of tractor attachments at the show. The SSL/ST is the smallest in FAE’s line of forestry tillers. Its compact size makes it extremely versatile, able to fit a wide range of tractors. This versatility makes it an excellent option for a number of tasks, including plantation and crop maintenance; orchard maintenance and restoration; agricultural reclamation; and soil mixing.

The other tractor attachment, the Patrizio, is FAE’s small mulcher for tractors. It mulches tree branches and bushes up to 6 in. in diameter and features Bite Limiter technology like

the BL1/SSL. In addition, it features adjustable and interchangeable bolted skids and two rows of counter blades for fine, even mulching.

The final machine, the RCU-55, is one of FAEs most discussed models. This unit, the smaller of FAE’s two remotecontrolled tracked carriers, is rated for inclines of up to 55 degrees. Communications Pro Offers Tips On Tackling Deepfakes

In the end, the loss of business, the legal implications and cost overruns can ruin a contractor despite his claims of innocence, said Josh Weiss.

A crisis communication expert, Weiss sees deepfakes at the corporate and even contractor levels becoming more prevalent in the next 12 to 18 months.

“I expect that by the fall of 2024 or early 2025 we will see more deepfakes striking,” said Weiss.

He said the bright side of all this is that bombarding society with deepfake videos and images will have a reverse effect.

“By mid-2025 or early 2026, nobody’s going to believe anything they see or hear anymore,” which Weiss believes is a positive for deepfake victims.

In the meantime, social media platforms will have to find a way to remove or prevent deepfakes from happening. Until that happens, companies will get hurt before people realize they shouldn’t believe what they see.

In construction, “a lot of the people doing deepfakes are trying to make it look like a company is cutting corners,” said Weiss.

How Deepfakes Happen

A deepfake goes beyond just ruining your reputation. They can have a huge effect beyond just the ego. Weiss has examples.

Say a contractor is bidding on a contract with the state. They’ve submitted an RFP and they made the final list.

“What happens if a competitor creates a deepfake video during the selection process, where it appears you can’t do the job, or you’re cutting corners?” said Weiss.

The judging panel has your bid, but they’re seeing messages and images depicting your company as unable to perform.

“If a deepfake hits a week before their deadline and they’re not sure if it’s real or not, are they willing to choose a certain company anyway?”

It’s a huge risk for that committee to take, especially for a state or even a federal contract, said Weiss.

Adeepfake video can be created by someone who doesn’t want a project to move forward, or who believes the community will be negatively affected.

“Someone in the community creates a fake video that implies there’s a major safety issue on the construction site, alleging the contractor is not meeting standards.”

Or they claim historic artifacts were found during excavation of the site. They claim it’s an ancient burial ground. That can stop a project in its tracks.

“Someone can claim there are risks on a project associated with dust,” said Weiss. “So, a contractor can water the site down in order to protect the neighborhood. But if you

have a video that makes it looks like the general contractor is ignoring the environment, that company gets fined, and that stops the project.”

Another example: “Say you have a disgruntled employee who creates a video that depicts what looks like a safety manager breaking a rule.”

That disgruntled worker is just trying to hurt an employer, or maybe they’re trying to keep the project going longer so they can stay on the job.

“There are always those kind of risks, where deepfakes can threaten a company’s ability to operate,” said Weiss.

Deepfakes in construction are still fairly rare, but there’s a reason the industry isn’t hearing it happening a lot.

“Because, really, who wants to publicize that? And it’s such a new form of attack that companies may not know they’re under attack,” he said.

Weeks after that RFP phase a contractor may find a video and realize they’re being attacked. This trend is only starting to hit the construction industry, he said.

“Even in the case of major construction companies, if somebody wants to manipulate their stock, all they have to do is create a fake video.”

These characters don’t care if you find out it’s a deepfake a week or two down the road because they’ve already made their money.

Answer Deepfakes With Transparency

It’s very difficult for a contractor to overcome the effects of a deepfake, especially on a multi-million dollar project, said Weiss.

But there are a few things a contractor can do to become a moving target right now:

•PurposefulMonitoring — This means making sure you’re watching for deepfakes. Is your company’s IT department doing all it can in terms of protecting videos?

One form of protection is putting watermarks on your corporate videos. Steps you take internally can demonstrate what’s yours and prevent someone from getting access to your images.

• Update crisis communication — Companies should update their crisis communications plan to cover deepfakes.

The bonus is most companies already have a crisis communications plan, said Weiss.

“They already have protocols in place for how to handle a media crisis, a community crisis, etc.”

He said 80 percent of a contractor’s crisis communication plan remains unchanged in addressing deepfakes. But there is one major

difference.

“If something bad happens and you say this isn’t real or it’s not really me, no one’s going to necessarily believe you,” said Weiss. “Just because you say it’s fake, people just don’t know if they should believe you or not.”

• Get third-party endorsement — You really need a thirdparty expert to say something is fake.

“Some tech companies have developed deepfake detection software to find which pictures are fraudulent,” said Weiss.

Most experts can customize a plan to meet your company’s needs. The key is having a thirdparty expert explain why it’s fake.

“That’s a lot more credible than you explaining by yourself” on behalf of your company, he said.

“I urge companies to update their crisis communication and emergency plans. I consult with them on what to do and say during a deepfake.”

And, he said, that extends to what to say to their employees believing the head of the company is having an affair, doing drugs or putting their jobs at risk.

A third party can say “this is fake” and explain why. The faster you get that out and have proof it’s fake, the sooner you can show that it’s already disproved.

“If you don’t have a plan lined up, if you have no third-party proof, that fake video is allowed to circulate for three days,” said Weiss. “That means more people every hour will see that bad news. With a deepfake crisis it’s all the more important to respond as soon as possible.”

During a media crisis, your plan is to have a statement to buy yourself more time to deal with a negative situation.

“But it doesn’t work that way with a deepfake crisis because the video will keep going until you can prove it’s fake,” said Weiss.

Preventing Deepfake Damage

Inside your company, said Weiss, there are steps your IT department can take to mitigate the occurrence of deepfakes.

One goal, he said, “is to try to lock down the ability for bad actors to access that corporate video.”

Finding that forensic capability to break it down is another step in the right direction. In all likelihood most contractors don’t have the inhouse IT resources.

“You need special software or expertise to detect and make it less believable,” said Weiss.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation recently issued $18.1 million in grants to support seven port development projects aimed at bolstering the efficient and reliable movement of freight on state waterways.

That funding, which comes through the agency’s Port Development Assistance Program, also leverages $8.8 million in local and private funding, for a total construction program of $26.9 million.

That program has awarded nearly $70 million to a variety of port projects since it was established in 1994.

“Minnesota’s multimodal freight transportation system –including the state’s network of river and Great Lakes ports – is one of Minnesota’s strongest assets when it comes to economic development,” said Minnesota DOT Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger in a statement.

“These projects are examples of how collaboration between local partners, enhanced by private-public investments in critical local transportation infrastructure, support economic development and job creation throughout the state,” she added.

Minnesota’s effort to strength its port infrastructure is reflective of broader efforts at the federal level.

In November 2023, the U.S. Maritime Administration –known as MARAD – issued over $653 million to 41 port improvement projects nationwide via its Port Infrastructure Development Program or PIDP.

MARAD noted that the PIDP seeks to improve port and

related freight infrastructure to meet the nation’s cargo transportation needs. The program provides planning support, capital funding, and project management assistance to improve capacity and efficiency of ports in both urban and rural areas.

That round of PIDP awards included more than $172.8 millionfor26smallportstocontinuetoimproveandexpand their capacity to move freight reliably and efficiently, thereby boosting local and regional economies while protecting surrounding communities from air pollution. 

TheVolvo Group has completed the previously announced transaction whereby the Group acquired the battery business from Proterra Inc. and Proterra Operating Company Inc.

The acquisition, which was made at a purchase price of USD 210M before adjustment for inventory level at closing, includes a development center for battery modules and packs in California and an assembly factory in Greer, S.C.

“These assets and the skills and competence of the Proterra team are a great complement to our current footprint and enables us to accelerate our battery-electric roadmap even further,” said Lars Stenqvist, CTO Volvo Group.

Volvo intends to run Proterra as a going concern and deliver to selected customers.

The transaction has no material impact on the Volvo Group financial performance.

The Taylor Group of Louisville, Miss., announced the acquisition of 85 percent of the shares of CVS Ferrari (CVS) from NEIP III and BP.

The Taylor Group is a large group of subsidiary companies ranging in goods and services from material handling equipment and container handlers to generators to construction equipment to parts and service centers and fleet management. Ignite Attachments, a manufacturer of compact equipment attachments, adds to its growing lineup of direct-to-you products with two new concrete-focused attachments.

The e-commerce attachment manufacturer launched a line of breaker attachments and a concrete chute bucket at this year’s World of Concrete in Las Vegas. These specialized concrete and demolition attachments push Ignite’s product catalog to more than 100 dependable, cost-efficient attachment options.

The company also announced a multiphase expansion into even more product families in 2024.

Werk-Brau D-Lock Tilt Coupler Enhances Productivity

Werk-Brau’s D-Lock tilt coupler allows an operator to tilt the attachment instead of repositioning the excavator for enhanced productivity and versatility on each job site.

Acompact narrow body allows better visibility and performance, while the rugged, triple sealed power actuator allows troublefree operation which is virtually maintenance-free. With up to 120-degrees of tilt, the D-Lock tilt coupler enhances productivity, thus increasing profitability by accomplishing tasks quicker with fewer excavator moves. Every D-Lock coupler includes a dual pin locking (DPL) system. Front lock automatically engages the moment the rear jaw is activated, negating any chance of the bucket falling off if the operator misses the rear pin. DPL safety system locks both front and rear pins in the event of loss of engagement forces. Granite Works to Speed Train Service,Avoid Congestion

A multi-faceted $300 million project aimed at untangling southside Chicago’s vast railroad and roadway infrastructure is well under construction with Stage 1, a critical step in moving forward, completed, and Stage 2 of Phase 3 well under way.

The 75th Street Corridor Improvement Project (75th St. CIP) is the largest project in the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) Program, a public private partnership including the Federal Highway Administration, the Illinois DOT, city of Chicago DOT and Cook County DOT, as well as private railroad companies. When finished, the project is expected to eliminate 18,500 annual train passenger hours of delay; increase train reliability, speed and capacity; and eliminate congestion, delays and idling for motorists.

Last summer, crews completed a $25 million “shoo-fly,” a temporary alignment to the west of the original alignment.

“That is what the CSX operation is currently running on, and it is a temporary alignment to the west of the original alignment,” said Brett Guarino, project manager II, CSX Transportation Inc. “What that does is allow for our trains to continue operating pretty much uninterrupted while we build the new flyover structure. Building that first stage of the temporary alignment, or, in railroad terms, a shoo-fly track, required a lot of coordination with our internal stakeholders. I would say that first stage was probably the biggest obstacle for Stage 2.”

Work on the flyover began in earnest in July 2023. When complete, the flyover is expected relieve a current chokepoint for four railway services.

The CSX corridor is the Blue Island Subdivision, which runs along Western Avenue.

“The subdivision meets at grade three other railroads at a total of four tracks,” Guarino said. “So, you have the BRC, Metra and Norfolk Southern meeting at what is known as the 75th Street Interlocking, essentially a large intersection for those four railroads. And just like you would have to stop at a red light and allow the opposing traffic to go through until

you have a green light, the same scenario applies at a railroad crossing diamond. So anytime we are stopping our operation to allow other trains to clear, it backlogs in our system, it just backs up the pipeline for everyone else.”

The flyover will take the CSX tracks over a bridge, to “flyover” the other three railroads.

The 75th St. CIP also includes three additional projects, also aimed at relieving congestion and delays in the Chicago neighborhoods of Ashburn, Englewood, Auburn Gresham and West Chatham along two passenger and four freight rail lines.

While a project of this scope would be a challenge in any setting, the busy urban location poses its own issues, but it also comes with some benefits, Guarino said. Because the project is on the southside, as opposed to downtown or the financial district, workers have more space, and because it is a railroad project, shipping and fabrication can be handled within the operation.

“CSX self-fabricated 70 percent of the bridge steel for the flyover at our own network bridge fabrication facility in West Virginia and we shipped all of those bridge spans by rail from our shop in West Virginia, right up to the project site in Chicago,” Guarino said. “Our project staging site at the

south end of the project is the CSX Forest Hill yard and as our company has not used the Forest Hill yard in several years, we have used that as we have our construction site offices for our construction management team and the contractor, Granite Inc. It is a material staging and lay down for assets. It allows us to rail ship a lot of materials, the bridge steel, all of the rail ties, all of that type of material has actually been shipped by rail. So that is an advantage — being a railroad project online with the ability to serve ourselves in that capacity.”

The project currently employs about an average of 75 workers daily, with 16 subcontractors on the job, including Ozinga Concrete, which is providing the concrete elements for the project.

“Ozinga is using one of their local ready-mix sites,” Guarino said. “They’re bringing in most of the concrete from Chinatown, so getting that to the site with traffic sometimes can be a little bit tricky, but we are utilizing local resourced materials as much as we can and that is really how we’ve overcome working in an urban environment.”

The flyover is set to be operational by Dec. 31, 2024, with the final restoration and clean-up work set for completion by Sept. 30, 2025.  CEG

Indiana Mineral Aggregates Association (IMAA) held its Winter Workshops and Trade Show Feb. 5 to 7 at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis, Ind. The sold-out trade show had 65 vendors that filled out 68 exhibit booths. More than 560 attendees were present for three days of workshops, making it the largest Indiana MineralAggregatesAssociation crowd ever.

“It was awesome to see our members come to Indy to enjoy the community we have created at IMAA, especially since there were so many new faces this year,” said Katie Allison, office manager of IMAA. “We can’t wait to see what next year brings for the Winter Workshops in 2025."

Next year’s Winter Workshops are scheduled for Feb. 3 to 5, at the JW Marriott.

“It is our mission at IMAA to create a platform where our members can come and share in the exchange of ideas and knowledge in a non-competitive and relaxed environment,” said Calvin Lee, executive director of IMAA. “Our Winter Workshops event does exactly that and this year our members took total advantage of the opportunity. When we see so many of them benefitting from what we have to offer it lets us know that we are doing something right.”

The IMAA was formed in 1934. The major changes in the industry have been a result of changes in equipment. Equipment transformed the amount of production and created other needs for producers.

The 2024 ISRI Convention and Expo takes place in Las Vegas from April 15 to 18, 2024.

The Powerhand VRS 200 (Vehicle Recovery System) enables you to get the maximum value out of your junk car before they are scrapped. Traditional manual methods of removing and separating high value materials from recycled vehicles are labor intensive and costly. Liebherr equips its R 922 excavators with a preparation kit that virtually makes the Powerhand System a plug and play hook up, the manufacturer said.

The benefits of using a R 922 from Liebherr is that the machine comes preprogrammed from the factory to control the unit and the clamp functions are controlled by the joystick and not foot pedals, making it easier for the operator to control.

IEDAAnnual Meeting,Auction Soars Past Its Own Records

The February Annual Meeting of the Independent Equipment Dealers Association’s theme was “Soar in 24” and that was on full display at the three-day conference in Kissimmee, Fla., Feb. 16-18.

Attendance was nearly 20 percent higher, with approximately 200 paid attendees, and registered golfers for the annual tournament nearly doubled over 2023’s players. Also, IEDA’s Second Annual Live and Online Auction raised more than $32,000 for the IEDA Foundation’s technician scholarship fund,morethantripletheproceedsfromdonated prizes at the first auction in 2023.

A recently-added kickoff feature for the annual meeting, the IEDA Auction was held Feb. 16, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., under a huge white tent on the 100-ft.-long front lawn of the Reunion Resort and Golf Club –– the meeting has convened at the Reunion property for three consecutive years.

Bryan Auction, owned by IEDA Board Member Doug Bryan, conducted the equipment auction featuring more than 400 individual lots of all IEDA-member-consigned equipment, trucks, attachments, vehicles and tools. More than 13,000 registered online bidders participated, and more than 200 people attended the family-friendly event in person. Bryan Auction provided a catered Southern lunch buffet and a cash bar to give attendees a fun and laid-back auction networking experience reminiscent of the ’90s and earlier.

The primary reason the auction was

launched in 2023 was to raise money for the IEDA Foundation, which, since 2022, has awarded 10 merit scholarships of $5,000 each to students enrolled in post-secondary heavy equipment programs to become qualified diesel technicians.

“We knew the auction had the potential to raise a lot more money for the Foundation, and mywife,Courtney,andIareoverjoyedtopresent $32,125 for an incredibly worthwhile cause,” said Bryan. “We are grateful to the IEDA board and all the IEDA members who generously contributed to the success of this year’s auction, and everyone had a great time. We see nothing but growth every year going forward at this auction.”

On Friday evening, Feb. 16, IEDAhosted a WelcomePartyforits200guestsinthesprawling lobby and Romanesque verandah of the Reunion, featuring lavish buffets, full bar and live music.

“The networking at IEDA is phenomenal, and, thanks to our executive director and master event planner, Dave Gordon, our members are able to connect with each other in grand style,” said IEDA President Steve Udelson from Easton Sales & Rentals. “There is no detail overlooked at the networking parties we host. I think I can safely speak for the entire IEDA board and membership when I say that this IEDA meeting is the most anticipated and thoroughly enjoyed industry event of the year for the independent distribution channel.”

an economic overview and strategic business advice with CPA Gene Marks, a former New York Times and The Washington Post columnist and frequent commentator on Fox News, MSNBC and other news outlets. The day’s presentation topics included insights for mergers and acquisitions and a proven system for coaching the dealer’s sales team.

A contractor/customer panel discussed candid perspectives on a range of issues related to buying, renting and repairing construction equipment. The panel consisted of two members of the Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP) –– Dan Maitland, an AEMP board member, and Chris Fontana –– as well as Tommy MacDonald, owner of Top Tier Site Prep, and was moderated by distribution expert Mike Marks, co-founder of Indian River Consulting Group.

The conference concluded with a moving keynote talk from Col. Greg Gadsen, who lost both legs and partial use of his right hand in an explosion while serving in Iraq in 2007.

Relationship-building was the workout of the day Sunday morning as 100 golfers filed into rows of carts and hit the links, undeterred by day-long rain showers.

The closing party Sunday evening brought more than 230 dealers, service providers and OEM used equipment managers together to enjoy dinner, drinks, more live music, and abundant conversation, stories and laughter.

“They may believe it, too,” said Weiss. “All of a sudden innocent employees are spreading the fake news even faster. If you want to stop that, I encourage companies to understand their employees are their first line of defense.”

Recognizing and reporting is the best way to start the clock in finding third-party experts to say something is fake.

The faster company executives know, the faster they can reach out, say it’s fake, get that on the record and defend themselves.

Your crisis communication plan should detail what they tell employees who are most afraid because their jobs are at risk.

“The guy in the field, the worker onsite, is the one getting calls and comments from the public, elected officials and customers.”

A contractor should always try to tell employees what’s happening so the employee is prepared to share the right message if someone asks.

“You don’t want them to speak for the company, but their response is a public state-

And, you want that message to be positive, added Weiss. You want that employee to say, “It’s not true, we’re addressing it.”

That message, at least, helps employees know what’s going on and they realize it’s not true, said Weiss.

“If you never address the issue with employees, they start to wonder if it’s real, too.”

The next step is getting the message to your elected officials from representatives of your company.

If there’s a general contractor on the project, you need to tell the GC what’s going on.

“It’s embarrassing to say it’s fake, but wouldn’t you rather say it’s fake, than they see it, wonder if it’s real and ask you about it?” said Weiss.

The idea is, whoever gets the first chance to say anything will control the message, he added.

So, you the contractor want to be the first one to share info, “but not so loudly you tell people something they never would have known about.”

RB Global Inc. announced that Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers sold more than 16,500 equipment items, trucks and vehicles at its Feb. 19 to 23 premier global auction event in Orlando, Fla., generating more than $258 million in gross transaction value (GTV).

The premier global auction event attracted more than 22,000 people from more than 80 countries, with approximately 83 percent of the equipment selling to U.S. buyers, including 22 percent purchased by Floridians. The remaining 17 percent of the equipment was purchased by international buyers from as far away as Poland, India and Vietnam.
