Top winners include an asphalt paving project in Lincoln County; a concrete paving project in Washburn County; a grading project in Brown County; a small bridge project in Eau Claire County; a large bridge project inRacineCounty;andalargecontract project in Dane County.

“We are committed to improving Wisconsin’s infrastructure and these awards reflect the great work to build a 21st century transportation system,” WisDOT Secretary Craig Thompson said. “Thanks to Governor Evers’ leadership, we are making critical transportation investments in every

Thunder Creek Equipment and its parent company LDJ Manufacturing Inc. hosted officials from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) at its newly expanded manufacturing plant in Pella, Iowa, on Feb. 1, 2023. The company added more than 25,000 sq. ft. of new manufacturing space to handle growth in demand for its products in the construction and agricultural sectors — made possible by a $1.5 million loan through the USDA Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant Program (REDLG) and the Pella Cooperative Electric Association (PCEA).

The program provides zero percent interest loans to rural utility providers, such as PCEA, that in turn re-lend the money at zero percent interest to businesses within their communities.

Thunder Creek Equipment manufactures a full line of field fueling and service products for the construction and agricultural industries, including trailers and truck-

mounted solutions. Attendees included Under Secretary for Rural Development, Xochitl Torres Small; Teresa Greenfield, the USDA state director of Iowa; Doug Stewart, CEO of PCEA; and other representatives from state and area economic development groups.

Joining Blackledge and Stothert in breaking ground for the tower were Mutual board of directors’member Rodrigo Lopez; developer Jason Lanoha of Lanoha Real Estate Co.; lead architect Jon Pickard of the architecture firm of Pickard Chilton; and Veta Jeffrey, greater Omaha chamber of commerce president and CEO.

At 677 ft., the building will feature 44 floors and approximately 800,000 sq. ft. of office, meeting, collaboration and amenity space. It will include parking for 2,200 vehicles in a garage used by Mutual associates during business hours and the community during evening and weekend hours.

Highlighting the structure will be an inviting street-level lobby featuring conference space as well as an “experience center” spotlighting Mutual’s history, brand and impact on customers and the community.

The building also will feature a “sky lobby” that will welcome associates from the parking facility.Amulti-level concept on the 16th to 20th floors, it will feature food services with diverse culinary offerings, a fitness center, employee

wellness services, concierge technical support services as well as flexible conference and meeting spaces.

Highlighting the sky lobby floors are landscapedoutdoorterraceswithsweeping views and outdoor dining, meeting and fitness spaces for Mutual associates.

The44thfloorwillfeatureconference facilitieshighlightedbyexpansiveviews from a two-story atrium. Senior leaders willbepositionedneartheirteams,eliminating the need for an executive floor.

At 800,000 sq. ft., the building is sized for a hybrid work model. Mutual’s current headquarters has approximately 1.7 million sq. ft.

“Asacustomer-focusedcompany,we worked closely with our design team to create a headquarters that is appropriately sized, adaptable to ways of working that may emerge in the future and able to serve our policyholders in an effective and efficient manner,” Blackledge said.

The redevelopment of Mutual’s current home office complex is a key component of the company’s downtown move.

“Continued development in Midtown is part of our vision for this project, and the redevelopment of our current home office is an important aspect of our plan,” Blackledge said. “From the University of Nebraska Medical Center to the Riverfront, linked by the modern streetcar, the potential for development is virtually unlimited.”

The company’s headquarters project is being developed by Lanoha Real Estate Co. Mutual also is working with a design team that includes global architecture firm HOK for interiors; design architect Pickard Chilton of New Haven, Conn.; architect of record Kendall/Heaton Associates of Houston, Texas; and Omaha’s Alvine Engineering. Mutual also is collaborating with Mayor Stothert, the Omaha city council and various city of Omaha departments on the project.

Gronkiewicz’s territory includes southern and western Chicagoland (DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, Kendall, LaSalle, Grundy, Will, Kankakee, Livingston, Ford and Iroquois counties) in Illinois and Newton and Jasper counties in Indiana.

Gronkiewicz began his 30-year career in the heavy equipment industry by spending more than 12 years at Hardings, working his way up through the service and parts departmentsandfinallylandinginthesalesdepartment. Long careers run in the Gronkiewicz

family, as his mother, Carol Gronkiewicz, also worked for Hardings for more than 30 years.

Bobcat Company has completed a $9.3 million investment in punch press automation and press technology at its manufacturing facility in Gwinner, N.D.

The new press line, which recently began production, is expected to more than double press production capabilities, reduce energy consumption, lower noise levels and improve complexformingforsheetmetalparts,allofwhichwillhelp meet the increasing demand for Bobcat equipment. The company also invested an additional $1.2 million for entrance and building upgrades at the Gwinner location.

"AsthehomeofouroriginalmanufacturingfacilityinNorth America, we are excited to invest in the facility and add this new automation technology to the Gwinner plant,” said MikeBallweber,presidentofBobcatCompanyNorthAmerica.

“This investment will provide us with new capabilities and efficiencies in our metal stamping operations, and it also alignswithourcommitmenttoinnovation,sustainabilityand continued investments in our manufacturing footprint.”

Bobcat partnered with AP&T North America Inc., a providerofadvancedproductionsolutions,forthefullyautomated tandem line, which includes design and build of the new 2000 Ton Valveless Servo Hydraulic Lead Press at the Gwinner facility.

“Bobcat is one of the first companies in NorthAmerica to invest in the future by implementing this automated solution using our new press technology,” said Christian Koroschetz, chief sales officer of AP&T Group. “This investment also supports Bobcat’s interest in pursuing sustainable, energyefficient manufacturing solutions.”

The highly automated, closed-looped, valveless servohydraulic press is 70 percent more energy efficient than a conventionalhydraulicpress.Thepressalsoprovidesincreased productivity and superior forming capabilities, which

enables the pressing of more intricate and complex designed parts, along with shorter cycle times. The press line and automation are smart controlled via internet-based solutions.

Bobcat first became aware of the new press technology througharelationshipwithWisconsin-basedTCRIntegrated

Stamping Systems, an equipment manufacturer consultant and system provider for the metal forming industry. Bobcat partneredwithTCRIntegratedStampingSystemstoprovide the new press control systems and magnetic quick die changes for all other presses in the tandem line.

“While visiting AP&T in Sweden, I was introduced to their latest automation breakthrough and knew it would provideasignificantadvancementforBobcat.Thisuniquesolution provided the ability to move parts in excess of 200 pounds very quickly over great distances; it was perfect for them,” said Todd Wenzel, president of TCR. “In addition to the latest automation, AP&T also demonstrated their new valveless, servo hydraulic technology for me. It’s unique capabilities, too, had clear application for the Gwinner facility and is consistent with Bobcat’s sustainability goals.”

The Gwinner manufacturing complex serves as the very first Bobcat production facility, which was established in 1947. Today, the facility covers 780,000 sq. ft., employs approximately 1,500 employees, and produces Bobcat loaders and utility work machines. The operation continues to grow with approximately 60 open positions in general production, including assembly, welding, material handling, fabrication, paint, maintenance and machining.

“This investment demonstrates Bobcat’s commitment to our manufacturing footprint in Gwinner and supports our nextgenerationmanufacturingcapabilitiesforNorthAmerica,” said Jim Flynn, vice president of operations at Bobcat Company. “It is another step for us when it comes to automation,robotics,newtechnologiesandadvanceddataanalytics."

The new Cat 352 hydraulic excavator combines more power and a heavier counterweight to work with larger tools. The result is greater production for more profit potential.

“Built for big jobs, the 352 delivers unmatched performance in its size class,” said Brian Abbott, Caterpillar global product manager of large hydraulic excavators. “It can be equipped with high-capacity buckets to dig and load tons of material in fewer passes or large hammers to work in demanding quarry applications.”

The 352 excavator offers a choice of fixed or variable gauge undercarriage. Thevariablegaugeundercarriageretracts to a 7-ft. 10-in. width, making it much easier to transport. When expanded, it is 6 in. wider than the fixed gauge undercarriage for greater stability.

Different cab trim level options are available. The Deluxe cab option comes with a heated air-suspension seat. The Premium cab option comes with a heated and ventilated airsuspension seat. Both have a tilt-up left-hand console for easier access in and out of the machine.

Optional Cat Stick Steer makes for easy excavator maneuvering through one-hand operation and includes cruise control for even easier traveling.

The 352 features keyless pushbutton start with an available Bluetooth key fob. Engine ignition can also be accomplished through an Operator ID passcode. The unique Operator ID can quickly save and restore joystick button, response and pattern preferences for individual operators.

Smart Technology

Standard Cat Grade technology boosts excavator productivity up to 45 percent. Cat 2D Grade indicates depth and slope on the in-cab monitor with auditory alerts, while standard Cat Grade Assist allows the excavator to stay on grade with single-lever digging. Upgrading to Cat Grade with

Advanced 2D or Grade with 3D offers the ability to create and edit designs and efficiently complete more complex grading applications. All Cat Grade systems are compatible with radios and base stations from top third-party technology suppliers.

Operators can store up to four depth and slope offsets to quickly cut to grade without a grade checker. Providing realtime weight estimates without swinging the boom, Cat Payload on-board weighing helps achieve precise payload targets to improve operating efficiency. Environmental Work Leads to Progress On LincolnYards

These include a fitness center, prefunction area with a riverfront terrace, conference space and private conference rooms.

“We also have completed our first infrastructure project at Lincoln Yards, the redevelopment of the intersection of Concord Place and Throop Street and extension of ConcordPlace.Nextstepsincludetheextension of Throop Street, which is a key roadway connection through the site.”

In October 2021, Sterling Bay broke groundonitsdebutproject,aClassAlaband office building which will serve as the catalyst for the future biotech innovation district at the site.

Chodos noted that 1229 West Concord Place will offer the city’s rapidly growing biotech community over 320,000 sq. ft. of new, ultramodern lab space.

“Chicago is home to many world-class universities that churn out very promising life sciences startups. However, because the city is so low on lab-specific real estate, these companies are forced to move to the coasts where lab space is much more abundant.Toretainthelifesciencestalentcoming out of our local universities, Sterling Bay is developing cutting-edge lab spaces at Lincoln Yards that will offer homegrown startups the resources they need to stay in Chicago, keeping the talent and economic opportunity here in our city.

“We’re so excited for Chicago to see

Chodos said getting to this point was no small feat. Because of its industrial history, Lincoln Yards’ 53-acres of riverfront land

was heavily contaminated with toxic chemicals, posing a health threat to the surrounding community. Sterling Bay invested $10 million over nearly five years in extensive remediationefforts.Theteamremovedmore than27,000tonsofcontaminatedsoiland36 undergroundstoragetanksrangingfrom500 to 100,000 gal. The team also recycled 69,000 tons of concrete; 4,600 tons of steel; and 200,000 gal. of petroleum-impacted water.

As part of the next steps of construction, crews will continue to make infrastructure improvements and break ground on residen-

tial towers, as well as The Steelyard, a space dedicated to retail, dining and entertainment. This phase also will continue the riverfront revitalization and begin creation of the first of two large public parks.

Along with Power Construction serving as general contractor for 1229 West Concord, Walsh Construction has led the infrastructure improvements of Concord Place.

“Both contractors are the experts we needed as we kicked off the development,” said Chodos. “To date, more than $5.5 million of the project spend has been with talented MBE/WBE firms. One great example is WD3 Associates, who supplied the concrete for 1229 West Concord.”

The biggest construction challenges at 1229 West Concord consist of building along the Chicago River and managing supply chain constraints. Despite these issues, workersareonscheduleforsubstantialcompletion by the end of March.

Inadditiontothetoppingoffof1229West Concord Place, improvements and naturalization of the riverfront have taken place. Crews have completed temporary parking facilities while road construction is under way, along with temporary community space installations including Fleet Fields, a recreational park space consisting of three public fields.

Crews are preparing the next phase of road improvements and making plans to break ground on The Steelyard and nearby residential buildings. Key tasks include completion of site work, including the riverwalk and landscaping.

The core and shell build consisted of 17,183 cu. yds. of concrete with 1,432 tons of rebar and 102.85 tons of post-tension cabling.

WisDOT Presents ItsAnnual Awards to Six Contractors

along with replacing seven traffic crossovers and multiple interchange ramps. With careful schedule control and efficiency, the contractor finished the project more than five months ahead of the original completion date.

Excellence in Concrete Paving — Trierweiler Construction, of Marshfield, received the award for work on U.S. 63, between Greenwood Avenue and Poplar Street in Spooner, in Washburn County. The contractor used stringless paving technology to ease access issues and improve the overall ride quality of the pavement. Stringless paving uses electronically guided equipment requiring less need for crews to survey and stake paving areas. The company’s dedication has provided the city of Spooner a wellbuilt roadway to serve the community for years to come.

Excellence in Grading — Hoffman Construction Company Inc., of Black River Falls, received the award for work on the WIS 29 and County VV interchange in Brown County. The two-year project included construction of a diamond interchange with roundabouts, as well as construction and realignment of numerous local roadways in the area. Grading operations were instrumental in meeting the challenging contract schedule. The contractor worked long hours and weekends with multiple crews to build a successful project.

Excellence in Small Structures —

Lunda Construction Co. of Black River Falls received the award for the County V bridge over Bridge Creek in Eau Claire County. This structure replacement was adjacent to historic Dells Mill and required careful consideration of construction methods, as well as seismic monitoring, for the duration of the project. The new structure exemplifies the contractor’s hard work and pride in the project.

Excellence in Large Structures — Zenith Tech Inc. of Waukesha, received the award for the West 6th Street Bridge over the Root River in Racine County. This project replaced a historic concrete arch structure and included similar features from the original bridge. The contractor overcame multiple challenges during construction and implemented innovative solutions to save time and budget.

LargeContract — Payne & Dolan Inc. of Waukesha, received the award for work on U.S. 12/18 (Beltline), between Whitney Way and I-39/90, in Madison in Dane County. This project helped create the first flex lane in Wisconsin. Known by engineers as dynamic part-time shoulder use, the project involved the largest intelligent transportation system deployment in state history. Innovative thinking and excellent scheduling were required to overcome the enormous workload and many challenges that arise on such a large project. These efforts helped make this project a great success. 

Mich. Certification Requires NPCALevelII-QualityCourse

The Michigan Department of Transportation recently approved the National Precast ConcreteAssociation’s PQS Level II-QualityAssurance/Quality Control course as an accepted alternative to its Michigan Concrete Association Level II certification.

Michigan joins Texas, Florida and Arizona in recognizing a PQS Level II course for statewide personnel certification requirements.

The PQS II-QA/QC course is available online through the NPCA education portal, which is available publicly at Precast.org. The course presents topics that build on NPCA’s Quality Control Manual, covering subjects such as aggregate gradation analysis; aggregate moistures; hot and cold temperature concreting; testing for mechanical properties and durability; and analyzing trends in test data.

Hamm presents a new generation of pivot-steered tandem rollers: The HX series.

ReplacingthepreviousDV+series,itisimpressivedueto intuitive operation with Easy Drive, high performance data, many comfort features and sustainable operation, as well as the"SmartCompact"digitalcompactionassistant,according to the manufacturer.

Hamm has put many detail improvements, new options and interfaces into practice in the HX series.All models are available in countries with the EPA Tier IV/EU Stage V emissions regulation.

The HX series is the new flagship for the Hamm fleet. Designedforasphaltcompaction,theHX70imodel(17,000 lbs. / 55.4 kW) and HX 90i (19.842 lbs. / 74.4 kW) achieve high surface outputs on large construction sites. What’s more, they also impress in tasks such as compaction in curves with a high degree of precision. Here, the pivot steering shows its strengths with a large turning angle, large track offset and four different steering modes.

Afoundation for high compaction qual ity is intelligent drive control with auto matic reversing. In combination with the electrically adjustable seat operating unit, it guarantees quality and comfort. It brakes and accelerates the rollers quickly, but smoothly.

The seat also turns automatically in the direction of travel when reversing. This is unique in the market, according to the manufacturer. It produces firstclass surfaces and ensures ergonomic working with safety at all times.

New LED turn indicators and details around the cab give the HX series its distinctive design. The fully glazed panoramic cab offers a vastly improved field of vision with an excellent view of the drum edges. Optionally, lighting for drums and drum edges can be added.

Wirtgen Will Present Technologies for Sustainable Road Building at ConExpo

At the joint John Deere and Wirtgen Group booth at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2023, Wirtgen will be presenting a cross section of its extensive portfolio of premium products for cold milling, recycling, soil stabilization, and concrete paving.

Alongside nine exhibits from three different product sectors, this year’s presentation also will focus on digital systemsolutionsandassistancesystems.

Wirtgen will be showing its highperformance, half-meter cold milling machine with rear loading, the W 50 Ri. This machine features a simple operating concept and a range of automated functions.

Another highlight at the show is the front loader W 120 Fi for working widths of up to 4 ft. 3 in. The John Deere engine of this F-series compact milling machine has been specially adapted to meet the particular requirements of cold milling applications.

The versatility of the company’s portfolio of cold milling machines also is underscored by the two F-Series large milling machines being exhibited at the show. The W 210 Fi is the ideal solution for a broad spectrum of applications, ranging from surface layer rehabilitation and complete pavement removal to fine milling work.

As a rear loader with a mixing capacity of up to 800 t/h, the W 380 CRi is the ideal choice when it comes to the rehabilitation of wider roadways and can be used for both cold in-place (CIR) and full-depth reclamation (FDR) projects.

The WR-series recyclers with allwheeldriveareusedforbothcoldrecycling and soil stabilization operations. With a working width of 7 ft. 10 in. and high milling and mixing performances, they also are ideal for use on challenging projects with high daily productivity requirements.

Wirtgen will be showing two extremely adaptable machines for concrete paving, the SP94i and the SP15i. The SP15i enables flexible positioning of the slipform paving mold, which is an enormous advantage when producing monolithic profiles in the offset process.

The machine also features an extendable operator’s platform that provides a better overview of the working area and the paving results. The machine also can be remotely con-

trolled with the specially developed AutoPilot 2.0 control system.

The SP 94i is a fully modular inset slipform paver in the 30 ft. class. The four-track paver with the TeleMold system, which enables fast and flexible variation of the paving width by up to 3 ft. on each side — i.e., a total of 6 ft. — will be exhibited at the show in Las Vegas.

Cold milling expert Tom Chastain from Wirtgen America will be providing more detailed insights into established milling and profiling practices and technologies in the course of the ConExpo Education Sessions on March 16, 2023, in West Hall 208 –210intheLasVegasConventionCenter.

The satellite-based AutoTrac steering system for Wirtgen WR-series recyclers enables precise and efficient completion of each successive project task. It steers the machine with a precision measured in centimeters on the basis of a previously calculated reference strip and a specified overlap of adjacent strips and enables consistent utilization of the machine’s ideal working width. This results in greater process efficiency and the minimization of environmental impact.

The WR-series machines also are

available with Wirtgen Performance Tracker. The system registers all relevantlocation-specificworkingparameters to provide a comprehensive database for construction site analysis and documentation.

In the case of soil stabilizers, these include the working width and depth, the area and distance worked, the fuel consumption and numerous other parameters.

The Wirtgen AutoPilot 2.0 is a control system for stringless paving that provides an alternative to the conventional method of mechanically scanning a stringline. The system, which precisely controls both the machine’s height and steering, is available for all offset pavers and placer/spreaders.

A GNSS signal and, depending on the configuration, various local sensors — e.g., an ultrasonic sensor on the machine — serve as a reference. The need for a stringline is eliminated and the time and effort otherwise required for setting one up and removing it is no longer required. It also enables fast and precise paving of tight radii and complex geometries.

CIM Program Raises More Than $2.1M at WOC 2023Auction

The National Steering Committee (NSC) of the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program — a business intensive program that awards students with a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in concrete industry management — announced it raised more than $2.1 million in gross revenue at its annual auction, held in conjunction with the World of Concrete, on Jan. 18.

“Once again, we thank the concrete industry for their tremendous support for this record-breaking auction,” said CIM Auction Committee Chairman Ben Robuck.

“This year’s auction was an incrediblesuccess,bothintermsof the value of donated items and the auction participants. In addition to a concrete mixer truck donated by MackTrucks Inc. and McNeilus, a truck-mounted concrete pump donated by Alliance Concrete PumpsandPapéKenworth,aconcrete mixer truck donated by Peterbilt Motors Company and Con-Tech Manufacturing and an

S-485 Laser Screed donated by SomeroEnterprises,wehadamultitudeofitemstargetedspecifically for the concrete industry.”

In addition to the live auction, a silent auction also was held. This year CIM had record proceeds from the silent auction. The CIM program was the first of its kind in United States — a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in concrete industry management.

The program has expanded and offered at Middle Tennessee State University, California State University, Chico, Texas State University, New Jersey Institute of Technology and South Dakota State University. Today, there are more than 1,500 graduates of the program working in the industry. The goal of the program is to produce broadly educated, articu-

late graduates grounded in basic constructionmanagement,whoare knowledgeable of concrete technology and techniques and can manage people and systems as wellaspromoteproductsorservices related to the concrete industry. It entails a broad range of courses, fromEnglishandhistorytoscience and mathematics. A series of required business courses such as

finance, marketing, management and business law also are taken throughout the program.

The concrete-specific courses teach the fundamentals of concrete, properties and testing, concrete construction and more.All of these courses provide much more than what is simply in the text — they emphasize problem solving, quality assurance and customer satisfaction. They utilize practical case studies and an internship to make sure the student obtains realworld experience essential to starting a successful career.

Ireland noted the industry is “creating a win-win scenario to meet demand for durable infrastructurethatalsohasalowcarbon footprint, which will result in a more sustainable and resilient world for the next generation.”

The industry’s “unified approach”todecarbonizationisthe central focus of the PCA’s Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality.

With the demand for infrastructure never greater, it’s vital for the built environment to advance in a fashion that is sustainable and climate adapted, said the PCA.

“This need spotlights the importance of the progress PCA — representingAmerica’s cement manufacturers — has made on its efforts to reduce emissions.”

In the first year, the campaign saw multiple U.S. cement manufacturers working with the Department of Energy to implement pilot programs around the concept of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).

The association reported increased acceptance and use of Portland limestone cement (PLC), a product that reduces concrete’s carbon footprint by approximately 10 percent.

“In addition to private building projects, PLC has been approved by 44 state departments of transportation, some of the largest consumers of cement,” noted PCA.

Consumer demand for sustainableconcreteisgrowing,andcompanies are specifying low-carbon materials for major construction projects.

“Through this Roadmap, we are creating a built environment that is durable and also sustainable,” Ron Henley, president, GCC of America, and PCAboard member. “We are demonstrating that the cement and concrete industry can address climate change, reduce greenhouse gases and eliminate barriers restricting environmental progress.”

In fact, the industry is pushing innovation and calling on stakeholders for more collaboration, according to PCA. The association

is working with Congress and federal agencies to maximize the benefits of both the IIJAand the IRA.

Both policies, it noted, provide significant funding for the clean technologies the cement industry requires to reduce emissions.

PCA also wants to see existing legislation, such as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, modernized to accelerate cement and concrete’s path to carbon neutrality.Thiswouldalsoensureconcrete made with cement remains thesustainablebuildingmaterialof choice, the association maintains.

PCA said its comprehensive approach will allow for the industry to continue aligning with private partners, government, industryandtechnologyleadersonsolutions, regulations and policy changes.Thiseffortwouldresultin empowering the industry and others to realize this shared societal mission,accordingtotheorganization.

Daunting Journey

“What gives us hope is the fact that there is a big rise in ambition across the industry,” said Radhika Lalit of sustainability consulting firm Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI).

“Companies, corporations, real estateplayers,anybodywho’sconstructingnewbuildings,newports, new highways, new roads, is looking into these materials.”

Shesaidacoalitionofmorethan 65 corporate buyers, known as the

First Movers Coalition, is leveraging the purchasing power of the customers in industries such as cement and concrete.

But to meet the targets of netzero by 2050, the industry will require some carbon capture in the process, she cautioned.

“It is impossible to fully eliminate process emissions in the cement-making process, and carbon capture will have to remove the remaining CO2,” said Lalit.

“We estimate that we need around 20 to 30 carbon capture and storage [CCS] plants in operation by 2030. And we have zero plants with CCS at commercial scale right now.”

Pilot projects are up and running,shesaid,buttheindustrycur-

reducing the carbon in the clinkermaking process. Limestone is the primary raw material, she said.

“You could use other materials such as calcium silicate, magnesium silicate, steel slag, recycled clinker, mining tailings, crushed concrete waste, as well.”

With machine learning and design software, contractors could utilize less concrete in the laying phase, she believes.

Lalit noted that mineralization startups currently store the CO2 in concrete aggregates.

“Supplementary cementitious materials,suchasflyash,slag,volcanic ash and calcined clays have little or no associated emissions and can be introduced into the cement blend to replace a portion of clinker,” she said.

Limestone calcined clay cement — calcined clays, limestone, gypsumandclinker—andotherinnovative cement blends, can “immediately” help reduce carbon emissions by up to 40 percent, she believes.

It would be a cost-effective move that would cause no major changes to the traditional cement plant, she added.

“These innovations are at different technology readiness levels,” Lalit cautioned.

Some of them are in concept states, some of them are in large prototype demonstration stages.

LincolnYards’Construction to Continue Over Next Decade

Site work for 1229 West Concord included the removal of 1,341 cu. yds. of soil and infill of 388 cu. yds. of soil. This work was completed in addition to the extensive remediation that took place prior to breaking ground on the project.

To construct the building’s foundation, 47 top-of-rock caissons were drilled and poured; one tower crane caisson with fulldepthreinforcingwasaddedand;twoadditional adjacent caissons were installed for full-depth reinforcement.

The core and shell build consisted of 17,183 cu. yds. of concrete with 1,432 tons of rebar and 102.85 tons of post-tension cabling. The building is equipped with two dedicated outside air systems (DOAS) whichprovide1.2CFM/USFtotalwith0.4 CFM/USF for office areas and 2.0 CFM/USF for lab areas. There also is 750 tons of cooling for chillers.

The curtain wall is a 108,000-sq.-ft. stick-built system. Additionally, the lobby will contain a spiral, feature staircase made of steel and finished with millwork.

Becauseofthesizeoftheoverallproject,constructionwill be ongoing for roughly a decade. Chodos said the wait will be worth it.

“When complete, Lincoln Yards will deliver a historic

amount of affordable housing, create more than 23,000 permanent on-site jobs, as well as more than 10,000 full-time equivalent construction jobs with significant minority- and women-ownedbusinessparticipation,andgenerate$4.1Bin economic output for the city of Chicago.

“It’s an incredible opportunity to leave a mark on our city. Getting this first building up puts us one step closer to realizing the overall vision of the LincolnYards neighborhood.”

He added, “With five years of environmental remediation taking place before this project, and conceptual planning occurring even before that, we’ve been incredibly eager to officially break ground. 1229 West Concord has come together so well, and it’s exciting to see the land start to be developed. The entire team feels very lucky to be part of something like this, because it truly is a once-in-a-lifetime project.”  CEG

Industry Takes ‘Unified Approach’ to Decarbonization

“Public procurement is the focal pointofthepolicy,”hesaid,adding thattheaimismobilizingtheinfluence of state agencies as the single largest purchasers of concrete in New Jersey.

It also focuses on the state’s position as lead regulator of specifications, standards and codes related to the material and its use.

“But LECCLA will leverage market dynamics to realize both short- and long-term carbon emissions reductions in this essential industry,” said Neidl. “Beginning in 2024, concrete producers who supply at least 50 yards for statefunded construction projects will be eligible for a performancebased tax credit.”

That credit applies if the concrete also delivers quantifiable reductions in embodied carbon, said Neidl.

The total amount of tax credits

that can be issued each year is $10 million, to be issued on a firstcome-first-served basis. And no single concrete producer can claim more than $1 million in credits per year.

Not only does LECCLA introduce an incentive for concrete producers to overperform, but it can build upon other policy advancements, said Neidl.

For example, low carbon concrete specifications and performance-based specifications have gained hold in NewYork State.

In South Jordan, Utah, Eco Materials is manufacturing cement using coal waste. The result is a product that lowers carbon emissions by 99 percent.

Several exhibitors at World of Concrete showcased their environmentally sustainable products and processes.

“The gauntlet has been thrown down to be more sustainable and reduce carbon,” said Grant Quasha, Eco Materials CEO, talk-

ing to the Las Vegas ReviewJournal. “This industry really has to use technology and innovation to meet future challenges and see advancement.”

Improvingemissionsfrommaking cement will be key to achieving future emission goals.

That’s because cement is the most used material in the world behind water, said Eric Ferrebee, seniordirectoroftechnicalservices of the American Concrete and PavementAssociation (ACPA).

CaliforniastartupBrimstonehas discovered the world’s first car-

bon-negative cement, made from calcium silicate rocks.

“We’re just making the same thing from a different rock,” Cody Finke,CEOoftheOakland,Calif.based company, told CBS News.

He said calcium silicate rocks are approximately 200 times more abundant than the limestone traditionally used to make cement.

Calcium in limestone serves as the binding agent in cement. It also contains the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

Theindustryisworkingtomake concrete cleaner, said Steve Regis, cement operations for the CalPortland Oro Grande Cement Plant in southern California.

Brimstone is trying to quickly scale up its cement-making process. The company believes it willbejustasreliableastraditional cement, only cheaper.

“We’re quite confident that the chemistry works and we can make the same material,” Finke said. 

The decarbonization effort has seen multiple manufacturers implementing pilot programs around the concept of carbon capture, utilization and storage.

What is Work Truck Week? For more than 20 years, the people who design, build, use and maintain the work trucks and equipment the world relies on have gathered to see the industry’s latest products and technology, learn from one another, and discuss how to improve the future. North America’s largest work truck event is your chance to see the newest commercial vehicle products, choose from a broad range of industry-focused education and gain access to engineering representatives from hundreds of exhibiting companies. What is Green Truck Summit? Green Truck Summit, held annually as part of Work Truck Week, provides insights, solutions, and resources in support of the work truck industry’s drive toward achieving greater sustainability, productivity, and efficiency.
