Construction Industry Optimistically Preparing for New Year Ahead

The construction industry is “cautiously optimistic” going into the new year. Infrastructure makes up the largest market sector and it’s expected to grow in 2025.

And while growth will continue, it’ll be incremental heading into the fourth year of the federal IIJA, now that many of the projects launched under this act have started or are under construction.

ARTBA predicts public highway, pavement and street construction will grow by 8 percent to $128.4 billion next year. see OUTLOOK page 64

Metro Flood Diversion Authority Releases 2024-End Updates Sixty-eight individual components of the $3.2 billion Fargo-Moorhead Area Diversion were worked on in 2024. That’s just one highlight of the year that saw more visible construction progress than ever before on major flood protection infrastructure for the Fargo, N.D., and Moorhead, Minn., metro area.

The Metro Flood Diversion Authority (MFDA) and some of its key partners looked back on what was accomplished in 2024 in a new video, “It’s been an honor and privilege to lead the MFDA Board again this year,” said Mayor Shelly Carlson, 2024 MFDA board chairwoman, who also chaired the Board in 2021. “It’s absolutely incredible to see all the progress that’s been made, and it’s exciting to witness history in the making as we move closer each day to permanent, rather than temporary, flood-control measures.”

The public-private partnership developer on the project, the Red River Valley Alliance, saw its design and construction arm, ASN Constructors, complete significant construction. The group excavated roughly 28 million cu. yds. of material, which would be enough to re-create the

Great Pyramid of Giza about nine times.

ASN also drove 24 mi. of piling and placed more than 23,000 cu. yds. of concrete to support structures along the 30-mi. stormwater diversion channel. Completing all that work involved logging more than 316,000 machinery hours and collecting more than 80 terabytes of drone survey data.

For context, that would be equivalent to making a music playlist that is more than 153 years long.

Another key partner in building permanent, reliable flood protection is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Paul District. Their contractors placed roughly 42,000 cu. yds. of concrete at the Red River Structure last year. While RRS, the largest of the three structures that will control flow into the channel, is at 70 percent completion, the amount of concrete used already exceeds that of the other two structures — the Wild Rice River Structure and Diversion Inlet Structure — combined. They also drove 16 mi. of piling to anchor the structure, with another 5 mi. needing to be

driven in 2025. Later next summer, the Red River of the North will be rerouted to flow through the structure, which is a highly anticipated milestone for the project.

Corps contractors also worked on reaches of the southern embankment and the Oxbow-Hickson-Bakke Levee. About 850,000 cu. yds. were excavated on these earthen embankments in 2024.

Additionally, a Corps contractor placed 800 boulders to form a rock rapids in place of the outdated Drayton Dam north of the metro area in Drayton, N.D. This allows for uninterrupted fish passage along the entire length of the Red River of the North within the United States.

The cities of Fargo and Moorhead as well as Cass County, N.D., and Clay County, Minn., have been important partners in ensuring future flood protection, as well.

Much of the city work has been completed, but 2024 still saw construction on six stormwater lift stations.

“It’s been great watching the progress made [in 2024] by everyone from heavy equipment operators to engineers,” said Cass County Commissioner Tony Grindberg, MFDA board 2024 vice-chairman. “I’m proud to have taken the lead on crafting legislation to fund the project as a state senator in 2013. Now, just over a decade later, things have come full circle for me. I’m looking forward to leading the MFDA Board in 2025, when we’ll be focused on pushing some components to the finish line and preparing for operations and maintenance on completed components.”

The FM Area Diversion project is the first P3 ever done in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and it’s the first P3 water management project ever done in North America. It’s also the first green

finance initiative in the United States specifically designed for climate change adaptation.

Wheel Loaders Offer Many Advantages for Winter Work

Winter brings challenges, especially keeping roads, parking lots and other areas clear of snow. Wheel loaders offer an efficient solution — their versatility, power and speed can keep operations running smoothly.

Bill Zak, wheel loader product manager of DEVELON, explores the features that make wheel loaders ideal for snow removal and winter conditions and highlights some tips to help operators maximize their potential.

These advanced safety features coupled with machine design changes enhance operator safety and those around them. A relatively new safety technology is the Transparent Bucket from

Multiple Safety Features In challenging winter conditions with reduced visibility, wheel loaders offer enhanced safety features like around view monitor (AVM) camera systems, object detection systems, additional lighting and the DEVELON-exclusive Transparent Bucket technology.

“AVM camera systems can provide up to 270 degrees of enhanced visibility,” said Zak. “Our optional AVM camera system uses three rear-mounted cameras and sensors. When activated, the system significantly increases the operator’s view of the machine’s surroundings.”

Object detection systems further enhance safety by alerting operators to nearby objects, even in low-light conditions or when snow accumulation makes it difficult to spot hazards.

“Ultrasonic proximity sensors installed on wheel loaders notify operators when objects are within a certain distance from the machine,” said Zak. “These systems allow opera-

• Adjust snow removal attachments to the right height and angle to clear snow more effectively.

• Check tire pressure frequently and adjust as needed to ensure the best performance and safety during snow removal.

• Regularly remove excess snow from the bucket, snowplow or other parts.

• Schedule pre-season inspections for the loader’s key components like engine, tires and fuel/ filters.

DEVELON, which helps minimize blind spots when the wheel loader bucket is raised. It uses two cameras and stitches together the video feeds so you can “see through” the bucket to the area in front of the machine’s lighting system.

Jack Eike, owner of Wood Duck Landscapes and BluGrade Earthworks Inc., appreciates the Transparent Bucket feature on his DEVELON wheel loaders during snow removal season. The Iowa contractor has found it useful to “see when the wheel loader front tires are coming up to an obstacle or curb so I can avoid hitting or traveling over them.”

Effective snow removal depends on adequate lighting. If operators are frequently working at night, consider installing additional lighting on the wheel loader.

“Purchase work lights to give operators extra visibility and make the machine more visible to other machines and vehicles,” said Zak. “A rotating beacon or flasher is a wise investment to increase operator safety. Check local requirements to make sure the wheel loader is properly equipped for clearing snow in your area.”

Versatile Attachments A wheel loader gives operators the power to clear snow, and versatile attachments make the work more productive.

Two of the most used attachments for winter work are buckets and snow pushers. For snow removal, the bucket should be properly sized.

“The standard bucket that comes with most wheel loaders generally doesn’t have a large enough capacity and lacks the optimal width,” said Zak. “For snow removal, choose a wider light-material bucket. This will speed up the job and improve productivity.” see LOADERS page 69

Hiring Construction Workers Starts With Right Candidates Hiring and retaining good construction employees, and finding skilled, reliable workers is an important focus point, but also a real challenge for employers.

Turnover rates remain high, job seekers have increased expectations, labor shortages persist and the employers feel the pressure to meet project deadlines with a weakened workforce.

Organizational development veteran Larry Kokkelenberg has more than 40 years of experience coordinating workforce efforts with employers. He trained more than 200,000 leaders, authored two books and has witnessed firsthand the costly consequences of hiring mistakes. During ConExpo-Con/AGG 2023, he shared valuable insights and strategies to attract top talent and build a resilient workforce. Those insights are available in a free downloadable e-book from ConExpo-Con/AGG. Cost of Wrong Hire Recruiting the wrong person for a skilled construction role can bring long-term challenges, including high turnover, increased training costs and project delays.

According to Kokkelenberg, effective hiring starts with identifying the traits and habits of successful employees to create a framework for interviewing and selecting ideal candidates. This backward approach to recruitment, outlined in the free online e-book, Hiring and Retaining Good Employees, helps companies attract individuals with the right technical skills, safety competencies and a mindset for teamwork.

When companies hire the right people, they not only reduce turnover, but also foster programs where existing employees recommend candidates from their networks.

“When employees communicate to their friends and family about good pay, great management and growth opportunities, they help develop referral programs,” said Kokkelenberg. “This method of getting the word out to local candidates is particularly useful and fills open employment opportunities with quality candidates.”

Leveraging Outreach, Training Kokkelenberg stressed the importance of proactive outreach to find qualified talent.

Initiatives such as summer internships, partnerships with community colleges, soliciting the Department of Labor, and working with the Department of Defense SkillBridge Program for transitioning service members, helps employers build pipelines of skilled workers. Digital platforms, local job fairs and community partnerships also play a role.

However, the construction industry saw extraordinary labor shortages throughout

2024. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, in September 2024 the unemployment rate was 3.7 percent, and the construction industry had 288 thousand open positions.

In a recent Workforce Survey Analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), 94 percent of respondents reported having openings for skilled labor positions in the construction industry, a 9 percent increase from 2023.

“It’s hard to get the exact experience you want today,” Kokkelenberg said. “More organizations will need to invest in training, once they hire the right person.”

Further, the AGC survey noted that 42 percent of respondents increased spending on training and development. While 61 percent reported increased pay rates for hourly skilled labor, just within the last year. These workforce strategies developed while 62 percent reported that available labor is simply not qualified to fill skilled roles in the competitive construction industry.

Employee Retention Starts With Employer Accountability Once the right people are hired, retention becomes a shared responsibility.

Kokkelenberg argued that salaries, worklife balance, job security and leadership

opportunities are critical to keeping employees engaged.

“If employees see no growth opportunities or feel undervalued, they’ll look elsewhere,” he said.

Retention also requires investment in training that goes beyond basic requirements. Employees who feel valued and see that their employer is invested in their development are more likely to stay.

“Training should show employees they are part of the company’s future,” Kokkelenberg added. “It’s not just about compliance; it’s about demonstrating their worth.”

Continuous Recruitment: Strategy for Stability Even with positions filled, Kokkelenberg advised companies to maintain an ongoing recruitment strategy to prepare for unexpected turnover.

“You are hiring and looking for good people all year long,” he said. “Even when all your crews are together, you’re still looking for good people.”

Employers must also address internal factors, such as pay scales, work environments and opportunities for advancement, to minimize turnover and build a stable workforce.

The construction industry’s labor shortages remain a pressing issue, but as outlined in “4 Steps To Hiring and Retaining Good Employees,” the right strategies can make all the difference. From effective interviewing practices to strong onboarding programs, employers can create a workforce that not only meets today’s demands but drives long-term success.

Illinois Tollway Board OKs New Seven-Year, $2B Capital Plan The Illinois Tollway board of directors approved on Dec. 19 a new multi-year capital plan that provides for planning, design and construction services that will complement infrastructure investments already under way and serve as a bridge between the Move Illinois Capital Program and the needs of the agency’s next long-term capital program.

“The Bridging the Future capital plan is a smart and balanced approach that ensures the completion of critical improvements as we continue the engagement necessary to advance our long-term capital planning process,” said Arnie Rivera, board chairman. “The Illinois Tollway Board has a fiscal responsibility to prioritize strategic regional projects with system upkeep to leverage funds efficiently.”

The new $2 billion Bridging the Future capital plan establishes a path forward for 2025 to 2031 ensuring the Illinois Tollway continues to modernize its infrastructure to meet future demands and address maintenance needs for the five roadways on the Tollway system.

Funding for the Bridging the Future capital plan is not expected to require any adjustments in the Illinois Tollway’s current tolling structure nor any additional debt financing beyond that already planned for the Move Illinois Program.

in progress or wait for the next capital program to begin,” said Cassaundra Rouse, executive director. “The Bridging the Future plan will help keep our regional economic engine primed, delivering jobs and contract opportunities and also ensuring our planned infrastructure improvements remain on track.”

Scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, the Illinois Tollway’s current $15 billion capital program, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future, has yielded many accomplishments including completion in 2017 of the new Illinois Route 390 Tollway and a rebuilt and widened Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) with its new SmartRoad corridor, as well as completion of the new interchange in 2022 connecting the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) to I-57. Work is on schedule for construction of the new I-490 Tollway and reconstruction and widening of the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294).

The 7-year, $2 billion Bridging the Future capital plan approved by the Board will fund planning, design and construction to address ongoing modernization efforts that advance the region’s transportation network. The capital plan supports the Tollway’s ongoing investments in the people and firms that help deliver transformational projects that keep the region moving.

Bridging the Future projects include: • Connecting Infrastructure — $258 million for interchange work design and construction including the Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355)/Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) Interchange as well as the Illinois Route 390 Tollway at County Farm Road and I-88 at York Road/ 22nd Street interchanges. An investment also will be made for improvements to the Lake Cook Road Bridge over the Tri-State Tollway (I-94).

• Improving Mobility — $725 million for investments for bridge reconstruction and strategic widening projects including local crossroad and mainline bridges on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294); railroad bridges on the TriState Tollway (I-294) and Reagan Memorial Tollway (I88); as well as local crossroad bridge reconstruction on the north end of the Tri-State Tollway (I-94).

• Modernizing the System — $532 million for investments in system improvements and maintenance systemwide, including for bridge repairs, pavement rehabilitation and funding for upgrades to toll plazas and Tollway facilities.

• Preparing for Tomorrow — $485 million for technology investments in active traffic management, backoffice system improvements and funding for pilot programs and studies. 

Missouri DOT Names Prequalified Teams for Third Improve I-70 Project The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has received Statements of Qualifications (SOQs) from teams interested in competing for the contract to design and construct the third project of MoDOT’s statewide Improve I-70 Program. Improve I-70: Blue Springs to Odessa will add a third lane each direction on Interstate 70 from just west of MO Route 7 in Blue Springs to just east of Johnson Drive in Odessa. The project also includes interchange improvements at MO 131 in Odessa.

Missouri’s FY2024 budget from the general assembly signed into law

by Gov. Mike Parson provides $2.8 billion in general revenue for the costs to build a third lane of Interstate 70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate and add three lanes in each direction on approximately 200 mi. of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville.

MoDOT will issue the request for proposals in January 2025 to these teams to work through development of their design-build proposals for the project. The department will work through the procurement process with these teams, who will submit their proposal for the potential selection of the winning contract in spring 2025.

Construction could start as early as summer 2025. There are still opportu-

nities for additional consultants and subcontracting firms to be added to each team.

Design-build is a project delivery method that combines both the design and construction phases into one contract. The selected contract team completes the design and construction in parallel instead of in succession, which saves time and resources.

The project goals are as follows: • Deliver the project by Dec. 31, 2028, within the program budget.

• Provide an additional lane of travel in each direction on I-70 from Blue Springs to Odessa.

• Modernize I-70 while improving the existing pavement, bridges and interchanges to enhance safety and mobility.

• Minimize construction impacts with a focus on work zone safety, communication and construction staging while maintaining mobility.

• Provide expanded employment opportunities while developing and using a diverse workforce.

National Equipment League Launches Second Season The National Equipment League has launched its second season with the debut of a new event, new contests and six competitors from the world of construction and heavy equipment operation.

This includes returning champion Bryan Furnace, returning competitors Andrew Camarata and Mike Simon (Dirt Perfect), as well as new competitors Brenna Moore, Chris Guins (LetsDig18) and Brandon Shannon (Dirt, Grain & Steel).

This will be an official championship round of four events with Furnace putting up his championship belt to the eventual winner at the conclusion of event four.

The National Equipment League is hosted by HD Hyundai Construction Equipment North America and is built as a new entertainment platform to show-

case the skills, character and passion of the construction industry through competition.

“The competition is more fastpaced this season, and we have great rivalries that rise to the surface in each event,” said Bill Elverman, commissioner of the National Equipment League.

“This includes the great ongoing rivalry between Mike Simon and Chris Guins, the darkhorse champion Bryan Furnace and the legend Andrew Camarata reminding everyone of how good they are at the controls, and new competitors like Brenna Moore showing us the power of women operators in the industry, and Brandon Shannon matching humor and wit with skill. Caterpillar’s exhibit, “The Next 100 Years: Experience What’s Possible,” will feature a powerful combination of technologies and expertise designed to highlight some of the ways Caterpillar is evolving with customers through the energy transition.

Caterpillar Inc. will launch its Centennial Celebration during CES 2025, providing visitors the opportunity to reflect on the company’s global impact over the last century as well as envision what’s in store for the future.

Caterpillar’s exhibit, “The Next 100 Years: Experience What’s Possible,” will feature a powerful combination of technologies and expertise designed to highlight some of the ways Caterpillar is evolving with customers through the energy transition.

“Caterpillar was founded in 1925 with an innovative spirit, aimed at helping our customers overcome practical problems and challenges. Over the past 100 years, the company has built on a revolutionary legacy — creating industry-leading products, technologies, services and solutions,” said Rob Hoenes, senior vice president of Caterpillar’s Electrification + Energy Solutions division.

Taking center stage at the Caterpillar exhibit will be a 55,000-lbs. Cat 972 wheel loader featuring a technical demonstrator Extended Range Electrified Machine hybrid retrofit.

The demonstrator maintains or exceeds performance similar to a diesel machine and does not require DC charging. The retrofit could eliminate the need for additional electrical infrastructure at job sites.

“What sets this demonstrator apart from other Cat battery electric machines is an additional power source,” said Rob Janssen, vice president and general manager of Caterpillar’s Electrification + Energy Solutions division. “In this case, it’s a conventional diesel generator running AC power to a rectifier, which converts energy from AC to DC. The energy created is used to charge the battery, drive the machine or both.”

Additional key features of the demonstrator: • Cat machines nearing end-of-life can be rebuilt and repowered in a way that allows them to function as part of a reduced-carbon future.

• Can be driven on 100 percent zero emission battery power for several hours. For extended operation, the machine can operate on hybrid mode with electricity generated from an onboard gen set.

• An option for customers looking to lower emissions, but not ready to go all-in on battery electric.

• Charges overnight on a regular utility grid connection at 240V. Visitors to the Caterpillar exhibit also will experience a virtual job site of the future showcasing examples of the infrastructure required to support electrified job sites, varying charging schedules, and the complexities of a job site powered by the full Caterpillar ecosystem.

Key technologies featured in the exhibit: • Cat Command — A remote operating station on the show floor will allow attendees to operate Cat machines physically working at the Caterpillar Tinaja Hills Demonstration and Learning Center in Green Valley, Arizona, 445 miles away.

• VisionLink — The cloud-based software application is designed to take the guesswork out of fleet management by providing key insights to maximize performance — regardless of fleet size or equipment manufacturer. Actionable equipment performance data is delivered to a customer’s desktop or mobile device to help customers make informed decisions geared toward analyzing performance and improving productivity.

“Our industry-leading digital capabilities convey a distinct competitive advantage. Our customers have autonomous haul truck working 24/7 around the world and have moved nearly 9 billion tonnes,” Hoenes added. “We also offer autonomous dozers, drills, wheel loaders and compactors. Our customers are using these technologies to increase the efficiency, output, safety — and ultimately, the value — of their operations.”

Another exhibit feature, the Centennial Corridor, will allow visitors to experience the Caterpillar legacy firsthand. The company’s first 10 decades will be represented, enabling attendees to recognize the significant role Caterpillar has played in building a better, more sustainable world and its contributions to society at large.

CES 2025 runs from Jan. 7 through Jan. 10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Caterpillar exhibit is in the center’s West Hall, booth #6416. 

John Deere Introduces Flexible Training Options for Those Seeking Enhanced Skills Helping its customers take their skills to the next level, John Deere introduces flexible training options for operators looking to enhance their skills on the job site.

John Deere now offers its customers learning experiences that provide focused training on John Deere earthmoving equipment, led by John Deere product training experts. The three-day in-person training courses provide operators with hands-on operations time on John Deere equipment.

“Our customers face daily challenges of operator shortages and attrition,” said Matt Nolte, manager, sales & customer training, John Deere.

“When they have an opportunity to

train new operators, they’re looking for not only high satisfaction from their new operators being trained, but also the right level of training to get them working efficiently, fast.”

For those looking to enhance their skills in person, the three-day training courses, which take place in place in Sacaton, Ariz., will teach customers how to conduct proper and thorough machine walkarounds, perform basic operations and enable customers to operate all key equipment features on John Deere machines. In addition, each attendee will spend approximately half a day exploring various machine families, helping to advance knowledge and skills on pertinent jobsite equipment.

This compact, hands-on training course is intended for new equipment operators with less than one year of experience.

Registration for the Dec. 3-5 in-person training session is now open with limited spots available. John Deere plans to roll out additional customer training sessions at various levels of skill at a later time, helping to enhance the performance of operators at all stages of their careers. CNH Designs Case Compact Track Loader Inspired By Metallica’s James Hetfield A special edition compact track loader from CNH construction brand Case Construction Equipment was on display at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, Calif., at the Helping Hands charity concert.

Held on Dec. 13, this annual event is organized by the rock band Metallica’s All Within My Hands charitable foundation.

Following its debut, this custom-designed Case TV450B compact track loader is destined for use at the ranch of Metallica frontman and co-founder James Hetfield. Hetfield commissioned the design as part of an equipment supply agreement with the Case brand.

The CNH Design team brought their expertise to the project to develop proposals inspired by Hetfield’s career and persona.

The winning proposal was submitted by John Piper, a rising design talent at CNH. Piper crafted a concept that

recalled one of Hetfield’s tattoos, a skull with wings, together with the sharp iconic font reminiscent of his band’s graphics and album artwork. He also drew from the pinstriping in Hetfield’s private hotrod collection.

All these elements were integrated atop a sandy camouflage pattern reminiscent of Hetfield’s signature Snakebyte electric guitar — a direct request from the artist.

CNH Senior Designer Darin Weisensel led the production phase of this project, working to bring the custom design to life on the Case TV450B. Built at the Case production facility in Wichita, the TV450B compact track loader is an industry fixture. Tough and rugged, it performs tasks such as digging, loading and dumping in commercial and residential construction activities as well as landscaping.

ISO Air, a Smyrna, Ga.-based national dealer for commercial drones, recently conducted a comprehensive drone and technology demo at the SSG Anthony Davis Memorial Model Airfield in Savannah, Ga. Here are three projects that demonstrate how MB Crusher tackles the highest challenges — literally.

Grands Montets, Mont Blanc, France · 3,300 Meters Above Sea Level The mountains present a tough challenge for most, but not for MB Crusher equipment.

Pugnat TP faced a demanding job at 3,300 meters above sea level, without water supply and with limited site access at the location of the new Grands Montets cable car station, designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano.

It needed to crush granite into 0-80 mm pieces to build the foundation, without the costly, time-consuming and environmentally harmful task of hauling materials down the mountain and back up.

To overcome this, they used the MB Crusher BF90.3 S4 crusher bucket, attached to a Cat 330 excavator.

In Drogo’s Valley in northern Italy, an MB-G500 sorting grapple was airlifted to a steep site where Fattarelli SAS company was reshaping riverbeds and constructing embankments.

In the heart of the Chiemgau Alps, an MB-L140 crusher bucket, flown in by helicopter and mounted on a Kaiser spider excavator.

The BF90.3 was fully disassembled and transported to the site over multiple helicopter trips. Once at the summit, it was quickly reassembled and put to work. This solution saved time and money, minimized the carbon footprint, and helped protect the surrounding environment.

Dürrnbachhorn, Austria · 1,776 Meters Above Sea Level In the heart of the Chiemgau Alps, the goal was to lay supply line cables. The logistics? A nightmare. The solution? The MBL140 crusher bucket, flown in by helicopter and mounted on a Kaiser spider excavator.

In rugged terrain and tight spaces, the MB jaw crusher handled boulders extracted during digging, which were then reused to fill trenches. No extra transport, reduced pollution, maximum efficiency. Once again, productivity reached new heights.

DrogoÊs Valley, Northern Italy It’s not just the crusher buckets that experience the thrill of helicopter flight. In the breathtaking Drogo’s Valley in northern Italy, an MB-G500 sorting grapple was airlifted to a steep site where Fattarelli SAS company was reshaping riverbeds and constructing embankments. This work demands the highest standards of safety and precision.

His calm and thoughtful approach to every situation, whether resolving complex warranty issues or assisting with technical challenges, along with his ability to provide practical solutions was central to his success and set a standard for others to follow.

Gerry Quinn Gerry Quinn started his Powerscreen journey in the early 1980s and has travelled the world to support the Powerscreen distribution network and customers. As a familiar and friendly face on the Technical Helpdesk, his deep knowledge and approachable manner earned him the respect and gratitude of colleagues and customers around the globe.

His contributions went beyond technical support — Quinn became a cornerstone of the Powerscreen community, embodying values of reliability, service and personal connections.

Dermot Corrigan Dermot Corrigan’s association with Powerscreen began in 1968 when he joined during its early days, when it was still known as Ulster Plant. One of his standout achievements was his role in the MK1/PC100 restoration project, a landmark initiative completed in the winter of 2005/2006.

Working alongside fellow Powerscreen Hall of Famer, Pat Mallon, Corrigan helped to restore this iconic machine, a project that not only celebrated Powerscreen’s rich heritage but also revitalized the cornerstone of its modern-day headquarters in Dungannon.

Corrigan played a key role in numerous new product launches and engineering projects, bringing his expertise, innovation and deep understanding of the industry to every task. Whether designing cutting-edge machinery or refining existing models, Corrigan’s work helped to cement Powerscreen’s reputation for engineering excellence and market leadership.

Speaking at the Powerscreen Hall of Fame presentation in Dungannon, Sean Loughran, Powerscreen business line director and general manager said “It is with great pride and gratitude that we welcome these four exceptional individuals into the Powerscreen Hall of Fame. Metso Agrees to Acquire Long-Term Partner Swiss Tower Mill Minerals Metso is investing in the development of energy-saving comminution technology and has signed an agreement to acquire the outstanding shares of its long-term partner Swiss Tower Mills Minerals AG (STM).

Previously, Metso had a 15 percent minority ownership in the company.

The parties have agreed not to disclose the transaction value.

Metso decided to exercise its right of first refusal following the divestment decision of STM’s other shareholders. As a result of the transaction, Metso’s ownership will increase to 100 percent. Metso has reported its previous 15 percent shareholding as a noncurrent financial asset.

Swiss Tower Mills Minerals, based in Baden, Switzerland, specializes in vertical grinding mill solutions. It is best known for the HIGmill grinding mill, which has been exclusively sold and serviced by Metso. This technology is crucial in modern grinding circuits and integral to the development

of energy-efficient comminution processes, for example, in combination with Metso HRCTMe high-pressure grinding rolls.

Over the years of cooperation, the use of vertical grinding mill technology has seen significant growth, and the trend is expected to continue.

Tigercat’s 6500 chipper is a heavy-duty down-swing drum chipper designed for high production and maximum flexibility. Rotor speeds are adjustable based on infeed material density and desired chip length — ranging from 0.5-2 in. — to maximize throughput and product quality.

With a frame that pivots on the undercarriage, the operator is able to adjust the infeed angle for varying feedstock or raise and lower the discharge height to adjust the chip pile size or accommodate top load trailers.

The pivoting upper frame also allows for transport on a 18 in. lowboy trailer without the need to fold the discharge conveyor to maintain transport height under 13 ft.

Maintenance is made easy with convenient service access. The split hog box opens over centre to fully access the rotor and screens for simple knife changes.

The grate frame is hydraulically retractable for inspection, service or impact detection.

The single discharge conveyor is open on the bottom for clean operation and easy servicing. A tool storage area mounted on the side of the machine hydraulically raises and lowers for added convenience.

An optional large diameter magnetic head pulley is available to effectively remove metal from the end product. The machine also is prepared to accept over-band magnet systems.

Civil Contractor Saves Big By Bringing PM Work In-House

The SLU provides Cardinal Civil Contracting with mobile, full-scale service on a medium-duty truck chassis. It carries service fluids such as coolant, reclaim and oil, along with daily fluids such as top-off diesel, grease and DEF.

“We’ve got the desire to do a good job. Our crews put everything they got into it. They come in and stay till the job’s done,” said Jason Syphrit, equipment manager at Cardinal Civil Contracting. “Everybody has one goal in

mind and that’s to be the best that we can be. And I think that’s what puts us at the top in my opinion.”

With the influx of people moving to the area, there is plenty of opportunity to put that attitude and manpower to work.

According to Syphrit, the company has around 40 to 50 active jobs currently, with many of them all-inclusive residential subdivisions with pools and recreation areas.

Not surprisingly, it takes a lot of heavy equipment to manage that many jobs and they all need regular preventive maintenance (PM) to keep up and running. For some time, Cardinal Civil Contracting hired outside service support; however, as the company grew it became apparent that it needed a solution that gave it better control in both time and cost. That led Syphrit to spend months researching service trucks that the company could purchase to provide efficient PM in the field.

Syphrit’s choice? Two service and lube truck upfits (SLU)

from Thunder Creek.

“Researching, I could not find any other trucks with the capacity these have in a small package. The SLU hauls the most fluids, gallon-wise, out of any of the service and lube trucks I found out there,” he said. “With the size of our fleet now at probably 500 pieces, it just made sense to go this route.”

company chose a Ford F550 and a Dodge Ram 5500 for their upfits, both of which allow crew members to manage PM for approximately 70 percent of the company’s equipment fleet.

The remaining equipment is new and on service contracts with manufacturers or dealers.

According to Syphrit, the two SLUs can provide four to eight services a day, depending on the PM services that need to be completed.

“We’re servicing many of our machines every 500 hours, where we are just in and out, and the bigger equipment gets 2,000- to a 5,000- hour service,” added Joe Zandlo, PM specialist. “On a good day, we try to get to three of those. With the SLU, it’s possible if we don’t have to drive miles between jobs.”

As a PM specialist, Zandlo’s job is to work exclusively with the SLU servicing dozers, excavators, skid steers, large rollers and other heavy equipment. He appreciates how easy it is to maneuver the truck through different job sites.

“As far as getting on the job sites, all the clearance is good,” he said. “Its four-wheel drive capability, which I’ve had to use a couple of times, makes driving and turning into areas simple.”

Syphrit agrees.

“The operators are not always able to bring the piece of equipment up to the front of the job for service, but these trucks are capable of getting into a site compared to a big truck. We had a particular job that was very hilly, lots of rocks and obstacles and these trucks helped tremendously.

And it’s turned out [that] there’s a safety aspect also because the drivers have got such good visibility around the truck, down both sides. I would say I probably wouldn’t go with a big truck again.”

Once on a job site, the SLUs have proven to be efficient for completing scheduled PM service. With 690 gal. of fluids available, self-contained hose reels and room for tools, the trucks offer a fast and easy way to perform PM service.

Each tank has its own gun so there is no risk of contamination between fluids, and Thunder Creek has equipped the SLU with a VMAC under-hood air compressor to speed fluid delivery.

“It’s 100 percent faster. You’ve got all your fluids at hand. You’ve got the huge capacity for waste oil and for new oil. Now we can haul diesel and antifreeze on the truck too and a lot more filters,” said Zandlo. “I can back up to a piece of machinery or beside it and this is all I need right here. With the onboard air compressor, I’ve never had to slow down on oil delivery. It’s constant. As fast as that pump’s running, it’s throwing oil.”

The SLU tanks also are easy to refill with the necessary fluids and to dispose of waste oil.

“It’s not a big headache. You can see your tank levels from the ground. You don’t have to climb up on the truck and look at how much oil you have left,” said Syphrit.

“Drivers will usually come in probably once a week, twice at the most to top off fluids and drain their waste oil. So that’s been good.”

An advantage that Syphrit also appreciates is that the SLUs don’t require drivers to hold a CDL or HAZMAT endorsement. There are separate tanks for each service

fluid joined by a common manifold to the commercial pumping system. Because of that, and the trucks overall lighter weight, any driver with a safe driving record can operate the trucks.

“It’s getting hard to find a quality driver for hauling oils and fuels. It is a lot easier to have a guy who already knows the PM side get in this truck and drive it than it is to find a CDL driver with HAZMAT that knows about the PM side of it,” he said. “So, absolutely it’s just a big plus all the way around.”

While the maneuverability of the SLUs, the fast and simplified PM service they provide and the ability for any driver to operate the trucks are all advantages — the major combined benefits are time and cost savings. Cardinal Civil Contracting no longer hires service contractors and can rely on the organized PM schedule provided by the front office to let PM specialists know when and where they should be.

“The more we can do the stuff in-house, the more money we can save. And as the machines drop off PM agreements with the dealerships, we roll them into our PM system,” said Syphrit. “And the more we can do, the less we are relying on somebody else’ schedule. So, they’ve worked out really well.”

If someone were to ask about a Thunder Creek SLU, what would Syphrit say?

“Buy four of them. I’m being honest that it’s just a great setup. We chose to set ours up this way, but whoever else could set it up however they want. “Our airport is part of the economic engine of west Michigan, which is growing rapidly in both commercial and industrial operations. Kent County’s 20- to 30-year-old demographic is growing faster than those 65 and older, which tells us we’re attracting good young talent, innovative thinkers and our businesses are continuing to grow,” said Casey Ries, director of engineering and planning.

His team focuses on planning, funding, designing and constructing sustainable facilities and maintaining airport infrastructure for the region.

“We see that growth at the airport with increase in both leisure and business travel.

In fact, last year we finished busier than prepandemic traffic volumes,” he said. “Our community has rebounded, and businesses are continuing to invest and air traffic continues to increase. With that, the airport’s commitment to our community is to keep pace with demand. We’re not seeing a significant increase in aircraft operations rather commercial aircraft are getting larger. We’re seeing more seats on each plane and doubledigit year-over-year increase in passengers.”

Nine work categories have been publicly bid as part of this phased design bid and construction contract. Eight of the nine are local to west Michigan. The most significant contract is for the baggage handling system and that is a contract with Beumer Corporation.

Other subcontracts assigned to date include Fischer-Idema, Jelsema Concrete Construction, Fence Consultants of West Michigan, DJs Landscape Management, The Bouma Corporation, Total Fire Protection, B&V Mechanical and Bazen Electric Company.

The project is on schedule, with 45 percent contracted and the other 55 percent yet to be bid and sub-contracted. Work in progress includes utility relocations and enabling work with curb front and site improvements, demolition, etc., clearing the footprint for the structure. That will be followed by basement excavation and then full structure construction, a basement with two stories above. There also is aircraft and nonaircraft rated concrete paving in addition to standard footings and foundations. Two major components of the project are maintaining airport operations during construction and the introduction of the new baggage handling system.

Ries shared there are some constraints to maintaining continuity of airport and airline operations during construction.

She said several factors support continued growth.

Besides the launch of IIJA projects, several states have hiked revenues to meet federal fund levels.

They’ve tapped a combination of general fund transfers, bond issues, business taxes and other user-fee increases to do so, said Black.

ARTBA believes overall transportation construction work, including highways, will grow 7.5 percent … to $219.4 billion in 2025, she said. That’s good news for contractors, even though industry economists are taking a more prudent view of the market next year.

Mixed Bag of Expectations In its fall webinar on the construction economy, ConstructConnect noted that commercial construction is up this year, but will slow down in 2025.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that non-residential commercial construction spending has increased by nearly 7 percent this year.

Kermit Baker considers that “healthy” growth, but monthly drops in spending will result in a real growth rate of about 5 percent to 5.5 percent.

Chief economist for the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Baker expects spending to fall even more next year. Citing an AIA survey from last summer, he said non-residential spending growth is predicted to be only 2 percent in 2025. Still considered increases, he noted, they continue to get smaller. That’s troubling when you add in other factors, such as the continued labor challenges.

The AGC learned more than 90 percent of contractors who responded to a recent association survey have trouble filling hourly and salaried positions. That’s up from 80 percent of AGC members in 2023. But, Ken Simonson, association chief economist, said employment is up nearly 4 percent this year. In fact, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 40 states have tracked an increase in construction employment.

Infrastructure remains “a bright spot,” reports SmartBrief. In fact, highway, transportation and water systems are expected to sustain investment next year.

“We’re seeing growth opportunities, especially in infrastructure and data centers,” Simonson said.

“But labor constraints and regulatory confusion will continue to be significant headwinds.

“Nevertheless,” Simonson said during the ConstructConnect webinar, “contractors tell us that finding workers is still their number one challenge.”

Trained positions, including surveyors, estimators, pipefitters and welders, prove the hardest positions to fill, he said.

Simonson said contractors are finding it easier to fill entry-level positions this year. Traffic control and general labor fall into those categories.

“People who shunned construction because they thought they could get an indoor job, perhaps with flexible hours, [are now] finding those aren’t so available.”

“Or, they’re not paying as well as construction,” he said. “So, more people are showing up to apply for entry-level construction jobs.”

As SmartBrief reports, it’s a systemic problem that’s been years in the making. So, it’s nothing new to contractors.

The aging workforce is retiring faster than new workers can be recruited and trained, while projects in remote locations make it tough to attract trade workers.

“Unlike sectors that can adopt hybrid or fully remote work arrangements, construction remains tied to the job site,” said SmartBrief. “This dynamic not only limits flexibility but also makes it harder for younger professionals to learn from veteran workers.”

That’s because mentorship and skill transfer are simply more challenging at a distance.

Construction Industry Meets Fork in the Road Inflation remains “stubbornly high” for certain materials, reports SmartBrief. While interest rates have dropped, long-term financing costs may stay elevated.

Simonson said that even if infla-

tion stabilizes, mortgage rates and long-term borrowing costs could remain in the 6 percent to 7 percent range. That in turn will exert pressure downward onto certain types of construction projects.

Although improving, supplychain issues remain. Certain items — like large generators and specialized electrical components — are still hard to source reliably.

“Unexpected disruptions, from low river levels to plant shutdowns, can create ripple effects that delay projects and increase costs,” noted SmartBrief.

“If labor and material challenges define the industry’s current struggles, technology may shape its future,” said the publication.

Contractors seeking to boost efficiency and reduce errors are

adopting drone, (BIM) and project management technology.

Yet not all innovations inspire confidence, SmartBrief discovered. In fact, AGC survey respondents were hesitant about AI and autonomous machinery. More than half of the AGC members who responded expressed concerns about adopting AI on job sites.

“This skepticism often stems from liability worries and uncertainty about ROI,” said SmartBrief.

Contractors want hard evidence that these tools deliver tangible benefits before committing.

“People need to see case studies that demonstrate feasibility, methodology and measurable results,” said Kris Lengieza.

Contractors are cautiously optimistic about industry conditions for 2025.

Procore Technologies, Lengieza was part of the SmartBrief report, “Future Focus: The AEC Industry Outlook for 2025.”

He believes that without that proof, AI and robotics may remain on the industry’s periphery.

Business management firm Deloitte notes that while the construction industry in 2024 was defined by strong fundamentals, it remains “challenged.”

The industry saw a 10 percent addition in nominal value this year, and a 12 percent increase in gross output. Spending passed $2 trillion and maintained a balanced trajectory in the first half of the year, reports the firm.

“Despite facing a pervasive talent shortage, the sector’s employment level reached 8.3 million in July 2024,” said Deloitte.

That surpassed the market’s previous peak of 7.7 million from 2006 and has been increasing steadily for more than a year.

Plus, the Dodge Momentum Index, measuring nonresidential building dollars, has also steadily risen, showing owner confidence in market conditions.

“Nevertheless, the industry had its fair share of challenges,” said Deloitte, including high interest rates and price inflation that hit residential and commercial.

On the other hand, construction investment being driven by government investments and an expected decrease in interest rates may provide relief next year.

Bracing for Future Possibilities As Deloitte states, disruption and volatility are nothing new to the construction market. Evolving economic and regulatory factors, said the business consulting firm, are expected to shape the industry in 2025.

“Nonetheless, 2025 could present opportunities for continued growth,” and contractors should pay attention to several factors.

The “labor mismatch” and evolving skills requirements require innovative workforce strategies, automation, enhanced worker experiences, and diversity.

“If operators are fortunate to have a wide-open parking lot, then a snow pusher is a good choice,” said Zak. “You can quickly push snow off parking lots at shopping malls and grocery stores.”

Remote Monitoring Technologies Remote monitoring technologies have become a gamechanger for wheel loader fleet management, especially in snow removal operations. With telematics systems, owners can remotely monitor a variety of critical machine parameters like fuel levels, engine temperature, tire pressure, hydraulic system performance and engine hours.

“By monitoring this data remotely, fleet managers and operators can track the machine’s condition from anywhere, allowing them to make proactive adjustments before a small issue becomes a bigger problem,” said Zak. “This level of insight is very valuable in snow removal operations where equipment is often used around the clock in harsh weather.”

In addition to monitoring the machine’s internal systems, telematics can also help manage operational efficiency during snow removal. By using GPS and fleet management software, you can track the wheel loader’s location, moni-

tor usage and use the data to optimize work schedules.

said. “We’ll have some temporary relocation of airline offices but are working to maintain the guest experience and capacity while we build new and improved spaces.

We will have new ticket counters, new baggage handling system partially in place, move airlines into that new system beginning in 2026, and then renovate the old spaces and old systems before completing the project in 2027.”

As for the baggage handling system, the airport worked with airline partners in evaluating different technology solutions and selected an individual carrier system (ICS), which is an established baggage handling system in Europe, but relatively new in the United States. In an ICS, each bag is placed in an individual tote for consistent conveyance and tracking. Other solutions considered were a traditional belted system and a cross-belt sorter system.

Ries noted that the initial capital cost for ICS is slightly more than a

traditional belted system, but the operational cost is significantly less.

“We calculated a four-year payback on the investment, primarily due to reduced operating costs with the utilities and electrical demand.

We project 50 percent less energy consumption with this ICS system over traditional belted system plus reduction in bag jams and staff time to keep the system operational,” he said.

The new ICS baggage handling system offers real-time monitoring and 100 percent tracking of each bag through the system.

“We’ll track each bag from the point of injection into the system through the TSA screening operation with the checked baggage inspection system. Each bag is then tracked to the point where it’s delivered to the airline. We expect to reduce the total time in system for those bags, and we’ll be tracking and reporting on those times for awareness and transparency.

Equipment used on the project includes vertical sheet piling; a mobile fusion welding machine; hydro vac excavators; a cold asphalt milling machine; excavators; front end loaders; dump trucks; rough-terrain cranes; and 500-ton flatbed chillers. Specialty

labor involves baggage handling system installers and programmers.

Working at the airport presents some unique challenges.

“Our approach to cranes is scrutinized, specifically through a review process called 7460 with the FAA to understand vertical impacts to flight operation, line of

site impacts from the air traffic control tower, to minimize or eliminate obstructing their line of sight where we’re working only a few hundred feet away,” Ries said.

The project has received local community support with area contractors showing significant interest in being a part of the development.

“That’s important to the Airport Authority, that as we invest in airport infrastructure the economic impact of that investment is felt throughout the community, providing as many opportunities as possible for local contractors and employees to bid on and work at the airport,” Ries said. “The airport’s brand throughout west Michigan is very strong. Just over a year ago, we opened eight new gates on concourse A which were intentionally designed to look and feel like west Michigan and the feedback has been tremendous.

Advancements in technology will continue to modernize the industry next year, according to Deloitte. Technologies, such as digital twins, robotics and AI, can streamline project management, collaboration and decision-making as they reduce delays and costs.

“With wide-scale adoption,” noted the firm, “companies could experience improved productivity, safety and resource allocation.”

Changing economics will shape the industry next year. Lower interest rates and falling inflation could reduce the cost of project financing. That, in turn, could encourage both public- and private-sector investments in construction, said Deloitte.

Finally, federal infrastructure investment will continue to benefit non-residential projects. This includes transportation, manufacturing and utilities.

“The recent increase in tariff rates on strategic materials like steel and aluminum aims to boost domestic production capacity,” noted Deloitte.

Contractors must embrace technology to combat the long-standing challenges created by labor shortages, say industry economists.

At the same time, it also has the potential to heighten the risk of reciprocal tariffs.

At the ConstructConnect webinar in November, economists summarized the industry outlook for next year as a combination of optimism and caution.

“While commercial construction spending continues to grow, it will likely do so at a slower rate next year,” according to the organization.

Despite an increase in entry-level construction staffing, finding experienced help

is still a challenge. But that’s not hindering bidding on new projects.

“As is the case every year, it will be important for contractors and firms to keep a keen eye on market factors and trends in 2025,” said the firm.

SmartBrief’s take is that despite the challenges, many firms remain hopeful. Nearly 60 percent of the AGC survey respondents believe markets will be healthy.

And almost half plan to purse new markets next year. SmartBrief urges contractors to address labor shortages with robust workforce development.

The organization suggests businesses “recalibrate” project bids and supply agreements to counteract inflation’s effects, and strategically adopt technology.

SmartBrief suggests “focusing on tools that deliver clear returns and build trust among stakeholders.”

The firm believes that cultivating a flexible, forward-thinking mindset and forging strong partnerships contractors can navigate the uncertainty.
