Crews Deliver Lake Bridge 11 Months Early Batting severe flooding and a lake that seemed to rise and fall at will, a contractor accelerated the replacement of a 94-year-old Kentucky bridge and finished the job 11 ahead of the original schedule. The new Kennedy Mill Bridge connecting Kentuckyโs Mercer and Garrard counties across Herrington Lake, originally due for completion in November 2019, officially opened to traffic Dec. 21. โOur workforce came from all over Kentucky and Indiana. Many people traveled from our previous Walsh Construction Photo

projects in Louisville, and some came from the local union halls,โ said Kevin Buch, project manager at Walsh Construction, the general contractor. โTheyโve put in long hours and weekends to finish this bridge early. They went above and beyond, and the success and the acceleration of the project would not be possible without all of their efforts.โ The 826-ft. bridge required innovative engineering and con-
struction methods due to the 200-ft. depth and treacherous conditions of the lake. To compensate for depth of the water, Walsh built bridge piers from the bottom of the spread footing to the top cap. The piers were constructed above water on barges and incrementally lowered with strand jacks, eliminating the dangerous work of deep underwater construction. see BRIDGE page 26

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) has received a $20 million federal grant for the expansion of U.S. Highway 75 between Murray and Plattsmouth through the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program. The U.S. Department of Transportation grant will fund nearly half of the projectโs estimated $45.5 million cost. will continue Nebraskaโs effort to complete a statewide expressway system. Plans to improve U.S. 75 have their roots in the 1970s, when regional leaders determined that a fourlane freeway was needed to optimize the corridor between Omaha and Nebraska City. Later, in 1988, the Unicameral approved development of the expressway system, which includes U.S 75. The Murray to Plattsmouth Project is funded for construction under the first 10 years of
the Build Nebraska Act (BNA), which was passed in 2011 to expand the statewide expressway system and federally designated high-priority corridors and preserve the stateโs existing transportation system. Work on the Murray to Plattsmouth Project was scheduled to begin between 2020 and 2023, and NDOT is evaluating potential impacts to the schedule due to the BUILD grant. see GRANTโpage 78
