MID COUNTRY MACHINERY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

Bud Pecoy (L) and Lucas Peed, co-owners of Mid Country Machinery, stand with the Ford Raptor raffle prize, which the company will give away in celebration of its 20th anniversary.

By Giles Lambertson CEG CORRESPONDENT

The story of Mid Country Machinery begins with two experienced equipment guys getting together in Iowa in 1997 to sell heavy equipment. Twenty years later, by every measurement of success, the pair of enterprising businessmen and two partners who joined them within the first year have succeeded in their venture. By the numbers: • Mid Country has progressed from a one-store operation in 1997 to three locations across Iowa — and one in New York state. • Mid Country Machinery inventory has grown from five used Ford backhoes to dozens of new equipment lines representing 10 major heavy equipment manufacturers. “I would say we are still in a growth mode,” said Bud Pecoy one of the founding owners. “We thought we would be sustaining a position by now, but we never stopped growing. We continue to grow every year.” Pecoy credits timing and a strong Iowa economy for setting the company on a successful path. That and people. 4

“I would attribute our success to people on the team, everyone on the team. We also have loyal customers who support our success as well.” The other founding owner, Lucas Peed, believes character contributed to the company success. “We are honest and hard-working. That’s what we are,” he said. He added that today, two full decades after Mid Country was launched, “we are the same organization. The same owners, many of the same employees. We are operating in different areas, but we are the same company.” Mark Swedlund joined Pecoy and Peed within a couple of months of the company’s launch and Bob Conaway did so a year into the enterprise. In 2017, all continue to sell. Pecoy is the company’s chief administrative officer with Peed assisting in day-to-day functions. Conaway brought concrete-handling equipment expertise to Mid Country and continues in that capacity, while Swedlund presides over business activity in the busy Des Moines area. After the company’s first five years of life in a building in Fort Dodge, Iowa, a second storefront was opened in Waterloo. In 2009, a third Iowa location was opened, in Sioux City. Three years ago, the company jumped the Iowa line and landed in upper New York state where Mid Country

Machinery NY was opened in a new building in Brewerton, north of Syracuse. *** Asked if he had a clue in 1997 that Mid Country Machinery today would have such a large footprint, Peed said, “Oh, heck no.” The same sense of wonder backdrops the expansion of the company’s machinery offerings. Kobelco became a signature product for Mid Country Machinery years ago and the relationship has been a boon for both company and manufacturer. The company for several years has held the top position in Kobelco sales based on market share, with Kobelco’s excavators digging in as a staple in the industry. JLG and SkyTrak products continue to give a lift to a broad range of contractors and industrial end-users. Kawasaki KCM wheel loaders, now part of Hitachi Group, are scooping up new customers. China’s SANY America excavators and road graders were introduced to Iowa by Mid Country in 2012. Road-paving customers have an array of machine offerings at Mid Country, with CMI Roadbuilding being the newest part of the concrete and asphalt paving products lineup. Trucks? The company offers them, too.

Mid Country Machinery offers a variety of equipment at its Fort Dodge, Iowa, location, including this Bell B60E artic truck.

MID COUNTRY IS THE ONLY U.S. DEALER STOCKING BELL’S NEW 60-TON ARTICULATED TRUCK.

“We never had haul trucks as part of our rental fleet before becoming a Bell Trucks dealer,” said Aaron Reicherts, Mid Country Machinery’s sales manager. He joined the company five years ago after working with Mid Country for several years prior to that as a product sales rep. “But we are steadily building a truck rental fleet, mostly 30-ton trucks.” Of special note is that Mid Country is the only U.S. dealer stocking Bell’s new 60-ton articulated truck.

The company’s MCM Rents division continues to grow, with JLG equipment leading the way in rented units. Equipment rental is envisioned as an ongoing key component of company business. “We are always trying to build up our rental business,” said Pecoy. “We don’t see a slowdown in that at all. We want to keep the rental side of Mid Country going strong. With the changing work environment that contractors face today, renting equipment is a much better option for many customers.”

So many brands across so many markets. New. Used. Rented. It is a little confusing. Pecoy was asked if Mid Country is a construction equipment dealer, a paving equipment dealer, an industrial equipment dealer, an equipment rental house, or what exactly? “That’s a tough one,” he responded. “I would say, all of the above. We do a lot with JLG. It’s an important part of our business, but it takes us out of moving dirt and into something else.” Peed was asked if Mid Country Machinery is principally an outlet for new equipment or used equipment? “To be honest with you,” said Peed,” and I’m one of the owners, I couldn’t break it down for you. Possibly about even, new and used equipment, with a little more new. There is so much good equipment out there and we offer a lot of it.” Mid Country’s headquarters in

Fort Dodge.

always looking for product expansion. Markets are always changing and the company has to change with it.” Global online sales and acquisitions remain a viable business component for Mid Country. The sales actually have picked up in recent months, with Peed mostly handling it. Swedlund cites equipment transactions in the Middle East, Europe, Australia and China, which definitely would qualify the business activity as global. ***

Reicherts notes that all the different lines of equipment target different viable markets. “Every line we carry is for a specific customer population,” he said. “We offer Kobelco dirt-moving equipment for construction contractors, but JLG has a whole different customer base. The rental fleet serves different clientele. County customers like the Gradall product line. Every line has been really good for us.” Swedlund said the equipment lineup is never static. “We are

Not pictured are Ralph Denslow, road technician, and Kevin Curtin, outside sales.

Not exactly global but clearly a reach for an Iowa company was Mid Country Machinery’s opening of a branch in upper New York state two years ago. It gave the company, in Pecoy’s words, “a whole new dynamic.” The move into a market in the Northeast came about because of a personal relationship Pecoy enjoyed with Joe Panebianco. Panebianco was a brokering and wholesaling equipment agent in the Syracuse area. In 2012, he partnered with Jeff

Polniaszik, who was operating JP Mechanical, an established heavy equipment repair company. Three years later, they merged their enterprise with Pecoy’s company to form Mid Country Machinery NY. Panebianco became a Mid Country partner and manages the New York facility. The relationships that Panebianco and Polniaszik had established with local contractors were key to the new location’s success.

The Brewerton facility serves small to medium-sized construction contractors as well as the region’s aggregate quarry industries. The outlet offers the same product lines and rental options as do the Iowa branches of the company—with the exception of Kobelco: That manufacturer’s franchise was not available in upstate New York. Consequently, when Mid Country was approached by Link-Belt to represent its LBX excavator line instead, the company snapped it up. It is a key component of the New York product lineup.

Mid Country Machinery’s Brewerton facility is a practically new 8,000-sq.-ft. building. In the next 60 days, a 6,400-sq.-ft. addition will open. The original structure contained 4,800 sq. ft. for heavy equipment servicing and the expanded building will add eight more service bays with overhead cranes and a high roof line to accommodate the largest of today’s heavy equipment. The facility will continue to do complete rebuilds of Caterpillar equipment for quarry customers. Expanding the facility to handle larger equipment is a sign of the times, Pecoy said. “We do business a little bit differently today and a lot has to do with meeting customer needs. Equipment is a lot larger than used to be the norm. We are definitely getting involved more and more with larger equipment. It is very capital intensive.” 22

Reicherts was asked if marketing an Iowa-branded company named “Mid Country” is difficult in New York. “No,” he said, “customers know the company originated in Iowa, and it’s not like we brought in a bunch of guys from the Midwest. The local guys already have a history there. So it isn’t a challenge. It’s a process, a process of growing. It’s a matter of getting the right fit for the guys in New York.” *** So why all the success? It is a result of concentrated effort. The company’s steady growth was not by accident, even if it was not entirely expected by the principals when they first opened their door. They believed in the company’s potential and relentlessly sold it to customers. “We have been growing steadily, every year at a steady pace,” Swedlund said.

“And we’re still looking to expand. A lot of it is because we have a good, aggressive sales staff.” That and a good reputation. The latter has spurred manufacturers to want to partner with Mid Country Machinery. “You know what,” said Peed, “most of the manufacturers came to us. They came to us. We didn’t go out searching for them. They just turned up because of our reputation. I think we do have a good reputation.” The reputation is of an up-and-coming company — even if it is 20 years old. That’s because steady, planned growth continues to be the company’s guiding philosophy. Panebianco, a relatively new Mid Country partner, already recognizes that the growth is keyed to personnel. “An impressive part of Mid Country is its personnel. The company values employees. Its key assets are its people. When it looks at expansion, it always does so by looking for key employees that will allow a customer base to grow. So we are looking at different opportunities and key people that will let us expand.” More specifically, said Pecoy, “We’re looking for, hoping for, at least one or two more locations in Iowa in the near future and possibly another one in upstate New York. We hope to fill these gaps someday.” Growth of the Mid Country Machinery brand is a steady process, year after year. It has been ongoing for two decades now and promises to continue. “In the last several years,” said Reicherts, “we had certain sales goals and most of the years we met them. Last year was a big year for us and this year we are on a pace to do the same. We’re growing.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG
