Old River Road Overpass On I-16 Nears Its Finish McLendon Enterprises Inc. is a few months away from completing the Georgia Department of Transportation’s (GDOT) $8,575,000 Old River Road Overpass at Interstate 16 project in Bloomingdale, Effingham County. The initiative is replacing a two-lane, 215-ft. long concrete overpass (built in 1960) with a 186-ft., five-lane bridge that spans four mainline lanes of I-16 and intro/exit ramps on each side of the diamond interchange. The new structure has two lanes in each direction and a turn lane in the middle with a 4-ft. raised median. The work also includes widening ¼ mi. of Old River Road in each direction from the new overpass to two lanes in each direction. According to reports, “advancing the widening and other upgrades at I-16/Old River Road will improve safety for car and truck traffic and will also enhance the attractiveness of the area to new commercial opportunities.” The project, which started in December of 2018 and should be completed in 2021, is being undertaken to handle increased traffic flow due economic expansion in the area — the construction of warehouses and commercial buildings — based on the phenomenal growth of the Port of Savannah, which is experiencing increased volumes of goods passing through it. The port is expanding in size and constructing new facilities will be able to handle the growing number of ships utilizing its facilities. By Irwin Rapoport

New MacKay River Bridge Likely to Be Built Near Brunswick Chances are good that a new bridge will be built on the F.J. Torras Causeway across the MacKay River, linking St. Simons Island and Brunswick, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). Construction of a new MacKay River Bridge could begin as early as Georgia’s fiscal year 2022, which begins July 1. The
bridge is projected to cost $78 million, according to GDOT. The transportation agency told the Brunswick News that the existing MacKay River Bridge, built in 1986, has reached a state of deterioration. GDOT engineers have detected cracks in the bridge’s concrete structure and scouring in its support piers,
meaning it no longer meets current bridge design standards. The newspaper reported that the GDOT assures the bridge is still safe to drive upon, but agency officials want it replaced long before it reaches a state of being unsafe for travel. “If we don’t do anything, the bridge will
continue to deteriorate,” GDOT spokesperson Jill Nagel said. “The bridge is safe, but we also have to look at the long term. This is the only route on and off [St. Simons Island]. The causeway is the only hurricane evacuation route for people on the island, so we have to look at this bridge very carefully.” see BRIDGE page 6
