Piling On Value As IEDA Celebrates 20th Anniversary, It’ll Be the Dealer Members Getting the Gifts The 20-year-olds you know have no doubt come a long way since their early days — they’re strong because of who has poured into them, but their best is yet to come. That’s how Dave Gordon views the Independent Equipment Distributors Association (IEDA) as it celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2022. Gordon, who became IEDA’s executive director just over a year ago, said the group has remained grounded in its founding principles but is coming of age with new and greater value proposition to dealers.

CEG caught up with Gordon just as he was putting finishing touches on IEDA’s festive anniversary annual meeting that convenes Feb. 11 to 13 at the Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Fla. The members-only gala conference is the hallmark networking event of the year for independent dealers, as well as the equipment and service providers who sell to them. Gordon talked about why IEDA is attracting dealer members at a fasterthan-ever pace and where he sees the association going next.

What do IEDA members value?

This association was built on our first members’ firm commitment to integrity and trustworthiness in the business of selling used construction equipment, and that’s still our Number 1 core tenet today. If you’re buying pre-owned machinery, you are going to do business with an honest, reputable company when you work with an IEDA company — they stand behind the advertised condition and hours of their equipment. And if someone wants to join IEDA, they go through a rigorous vetting process that includes providing five business referrals.

Our members take their reputations and the reputation of our industry very seriously.

And honestly, this is resonating with more and more independent dealers around North America and overseas.

What’s your vision for IEDA over the next 12 to 18 months?

I’ve got three priorities on my radar for the near future: 1) For the first time this year, we initiated a new scholarship for students pursuing careers as equipment technicians, and we awarded $5,000 to two worthy individuals.

Looking Back: Equipment Auctions in the ’90s

T

hese photographs, from the archives of the Historical Construction Equipment Association, were taken at various auctions in California and Nevada in the 1990s. Auctions have been a significant part of the construction equipment industry for decades, and preserving the history of the equipment auction industry is part of the HCEA’s mission to preserve for public education the history of the construction, dredging and surface mining industries.

The HCEA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of the construction, dredging and surface mining equipment industries.

With over 3,800 members in 25 countries, its activities include publication of a quarterly educational magazine, Equipment Echoes operation of National Construction Equipment Museum and archives in Bowling Green,
