John Deere Names 4Rivers Technician Territory Champ Dallas Thompson has been a diesel technician at 4Rivers Equipment for the last 25 years. In that time, he has made an impact as a positive leader in the shop and in the field, leading him to be recognized by John Deere as a territory champion.

The John Deere Technicians Award Program recognizes those who epitomize what it means to be “John Deere” and honors commitment to the brand. Beyond that, the award program acknowledges those who are of extraordinary service to their community.

“It is a great honor that Deere recognizes me because I have worked with John Deere equipment for 25 years,” Thompson said.

“I’m incredibly proud to have a 4Rivers technician make it to territory champion once again,” 4Rivers Equipment CEO John Shearer said. “Dallas is an amazing example of living our mission and vision statements on a daily basis. His friendly and upbeat attitude and technical expertise is a big part of the Colorado Springs store’s success. In addition to what Dallas does at the store, he also spends his free time helping on various

veterans’ organization. I am very proud to have Dallas on our team.”

As a level IV technician, Thompson has plenty of accomplishments in the workplace, but it is his work with the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA) that truly sets him apart.

The CVMA is an association of combat veterans who support veteran care facilities by providing warm meals, clothing, shelter and guidance to other combat veterans.

Thompson serves as the commander of Chapter 3/5.

“It is vets helping vets. Every year we have a poker run and donate the proceeds to Veterans Community Living Center at Homelake in Monte Vista, Colorado,” Thompson said. “During Christmas, we go down and lay wreaths at the cemetery and then go hang out with the veterans. There have been times in the summer where we go down there for no reason, just to hang out with them, give them some gifts and make them feel loved and wanted in the community.”

Thompson carries the same spirit of giving to the shop by being a role model to other technicians, using his leadership and knowledge to build their skillsets.

“My team here in Colorado Springs is my motivation because I know I can get them on the right track and I can make them better technicians,” Thompson said. “I have learned how to motivate other techs and help

them find the answer they are looking for.”

Thompson’s lifelong passion for mechanics began during his early years, fostered by his military service as a self-propelled systems mechanic. His enthusiasm for repairing and revitalizing equipment remains a driving force in his professional and personal life.

“Since I was young, I always liked tinkering around with stuff and if it was broke, I tried to bring it back to life,” Thompson said.

“The reason being it always enthused me and made me feel good to make it work again. When I turned 20, I had joined the army and I wanted to be a tank mechanic. I ended up being with the field artillery and I was a self-propelled systems mechanic. I just loved doing it, that is what sparked the interest. Fixing stuff that was broke and trying to bring it back to life excites me.”

Thompson thanked Colorado Springs Branch Manager Nick Kout and Service Manager Rich Jeanblanc for nominating him for this award.

Jacobsen Construction Celebrates Topping Out in Utah

A group of approximately 600 construction workers gathered in Salt Lake City to celebrate a topping out ceremony for Astra Tower, a 41-floor structure that will represent the tallest building in Utah ever built.

Designed by global design firm HKS, Astra Tower now stands more than 450 ft. tall and redefines Salt Lake’s urban skyline.

Utah’s busy construction industry was on full display in October as an audience of approximately 600 people, most of them construction workers, turned out to celebrate the placement of the final beam on Salt Lake City’s tallest building, the new 41-floor Astra Tower.

Construction crews were joined by a list of dignitaries, including two mayors and numerous project leaders from Jacobsen Construction and Kensington Investment Company.

“Salt Lake City’s growing skyline is a testament to the excitement and vitality surrounding our urban core right now,” Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said.

“Astra Tower will serve as a hub of activity downtown, creating an opportunity for its residents to enjoy all we have to offer. As it takes its place as the tallest building ever built in Utah, I also believe it’s representative of our bright future ahead.”

The first above grade concrete was poured in early 2023. Since then, the high rise has progressed upward on an average of a full level every seven days, with an average of 365 workers on the jobsite daily and more than 45 subcontractors and vendors contributing to the project.

In videotaped comments, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said achievements like the tower show that the state “continues to be the best place in America to build on a bold vision” and reflects well on the “economic vibrancy of our communities.”

“With the hi-rise having recently reached its full stature, I want to congratulate the whole project team for literally taking our state to new heights,” Cox said. “I look forward to seeing Astra Tower take its place among the most iconic structures in our Capital city skyline as the project moves forward toward final completion over the coming months.”

The Astra Tower project team is seeking LEED Gold certification by building according to strict sustainability standards that minimize carbon footprint and address pressing environmental issues specific to northern Utah, particularly air quality and water conservation.

“We’re building for the future, not just for right now,” said Shane Rensmon, president of real estate development of Kensington Investment Company. “Knowing that water shortages and air quality are challenges here, we want to help the natural environment surrounding Astra Tower rather than burdening it.”

Astra Tower’s luxury apartments will include studios, one-, two-, and three-bedroom floorplans and two levels of exclusive penthouse units. Amenities will include an

outdoor urban park, a clubhouse with chef kitchen, a work lounge with conference rooms, a full-service fitness center with a multipurpose studio, an outdoor pool and terrace, a spa and wellness center and a large 41st floor rooftop terrace.

“Astra Tower will revolutionize urban living in Salt Lake City by creating a unique, sustainable and urban community,” said Emir Tursic HKS Principal and Architect.

“Residents will receive extensive indoor and outdoor amenities while being within walking distance of the best experiences the city has to offer.”

CDOT Cuts Ribbon On New Traffic Operations Center Coloradans experienced its first taste of snow in October, officially marking the start of the winter driving season. This year, the Colorado Department of Transportation is adding more to its arsenal to help keep traffic moving and travelers safe, especially along the Interstate 70 Mountain Corridor, by opening a new, updated Operations Center at the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnels and maintenance garage bays.

“We are now approaching an almost $2 million hit to the economy for every hour the I-70 Mountain Corridor is closed,” said Shoshana Lew, CDOT’s executive director. “Not only do closures delay important deliveries and transportation of goods, it also has a real impact on the livelihood of our travelers, which cannot be summed up by a figure. It is important to CDOT to do everything we can to alleviate those impacts and ensure a quick clearance of incidents along the interstate, which is why we invested in updating our technology at the Operations Center and constructing a new maintenance facility at the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnels.”

While an Operations Center inside the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnels has already existed for decades, the technology within the Center needed to be updated to improve response times and safety. Upgrades include replacing decades-old copper

wires, installing fiber optic cables, putting up new cameras and screens, all of which will increase the speed and quality of the Center’s monitors inside the new building. Quality is imperative as it helps CDOT’s operators see if there is something in the road that needs to be cleared or get more details on an incident.

“The new cameras and monitors will allow us to zoom all the way into the roadway, up to two miles away from the tunnels, to detect even small debris such as nails,” said Lew. “This allows our crews to remove it from the roadway before it becomes a hazard to motorists. We also are able to

zoom in on incidents to better document and report what is going on.

We will be able to see how many passengers are in a vehicle, license plate numbers and more. This helps aid our first responders, including CDOT maintainers, as they respond to an incident as they are going to have more details prior to approaching the scene that will help them know what they need ahead of time to help quickly clear the incident.”

“The technology upgrades within the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnels will allow for real-time coordination and collaborative responses to traffic incidents along the I-70 corridor, par-

ticularly in those areas most known for mountain area congestion,” stated Col. Matthew C. Packard, chief of the Colorado State Patrol.

“Reducing the timeframe of a partial or complete closure also reduces the hazards adversely impacting the movement of people and freight. This improved capability, coupled with motorists preparing their vehicles and driving habits for the terrain and changing road conditions, can help us avoid serious human and economic consequences.”

The new maintenance garage bays on the west side of the tunnel will help crews mobilize and clear I-70 quicker as maintainers will no

longer have to move snow off their equipment, something they frequently had to do at this location.

When snow starts to fall, CDOT’s maintainers at the Tunnels will already be prepped and ready to go.

“We are proud to have construction complete ahead of snow hitting the I-70 Mountain Corridor,” said John Lorme, CDOT’s director of maintenance and operations.

“Travelers should expect to see snow on a more frequent basis along this corridor any day now and should start preparing for winter driving now. It’s critical that motorists check their tires or invest in new snow tires ahead of the season and get familiar with Colorado’s Chain and Traction Laws.”

“As public safety is at the heart of everything we do, we are pleased to witness the opening of this new operations center, which will provide improved response times and increased overall safety for those traveling along this crucial corridor that connects our diverse Colorado mountain towns and beyond,” said Stan Hilkey, executive director of the Colorado Department of Public Safety. “This new and improved facility will be instrumental in aiding first responders, CDOT teams and all others who play a role in roadway safety and we are grateful for this improvement to one of Colorado’s most heavily trafficked thoroughfares.”  (Photo courtesy of CDOT.)

Colorado Investing $140M for Statewide Improvements The Colorado Department of Transportation will be prioritizing essentials thanks to a $140.9 million funding package approved that will allow for statewide maintenance and safety improvements.

The funding, approved by the Colorado Transportation Commission, builds on the Polis Administration’s significant commitments to fixing the condition of Colorado’s roads through measures such as the rural repaving program, an initiative to improve interstate paving condition and crucial measures to strengthen the highway maintenance program. These funds come through an annual Federal Highway

Administration process that redistributes unspent federal funds to states at the end of each federal fiscal year.

“This funding package is overwhelmingly about reinvesting in the fundamentals and safety,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “We want to fix rough roads, make roads safer and make our roads more resistant to the challenges that nature inevitably throws at them. Taking care of our existing infrastructure is every bit as important as building new infrastructure.”

Of special note, the package includes $65 million for replacement and repair of culverts, the tunnels beneath roads that allow water to drain properly near road-

ways, a challenge made worse in recent decades by climate change that has brought more and larger floods and mudslides to highways, such as with CO 133 near Paonia last spring and in Glenwood Canyon in 2021.

The funding would be the largest investment in culverts in recent CDOT history.

“Culverts may be one of the least noticeable pieces of road infrastructure, but they’re critical for resiliency,” Lew said.

“With good culverts, our roads have a much better chance of surviving floods and mudslides. When culverts fail, roads can experience major damage — which can cause serious disruption for travelers.”

The funding package also includes $10 million to install or upgrade guardrail and $7 million for rockfall mitigation. And it includes $13 million for fixing poor interstate pavement, which will allow the acceleration of pavement rehabilitation on Interstate 70 from Bethune to Burlington and builds on other recent interstate repaving work.

The package also includes $8 million for avalanche mitigation and $10 million for rest areas, which includes $8.5 million to repair and reopen the Pinon Rest Area on I25 between Fountain and Pueblo. That rest area has serious plumbing and drainage problems and needed major upgrades. 

The acquisition, expected to close Dec. 11, 2023, will expand the company’s footprint to 12 states and establish a presence for the company in the Mountain region.

Arizona DOT Office Wins Four Top Awards From AASHTO The Arizona Department of Transportation Office of Communications and Public Involvement has won four top awards from an organization representing state transportation agencies across the country.

ADOT took home the honors during the recent annual meeting of TransComm, the communications committee for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the national nonprofit group that represents and supports state departments of transportation.
