Terex Brings London’s Shard to Tallest Height in European Union Select Plant Hire has chosen eight Terex luffing jib tower cranes to help construct The Shard, London’s latest iconic landmark for Mace Construction Ltd. This comes as part of the spectacular 3 billion London Bridge Quarter regeneration project on the south bank of the river Thames.

Soon to become the tallest building in the European Union, the glass-clad tower designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano will dominate the London skyline at a height of 1,016 ft. (310 m). Covering an area of approximately 920,000 sq. ft. (85,470 sq m), over 87 floors, it will include a five-star hotel, several bars, restaurants, viewing galleries, luxury apartments and offices for approximately 7,000 people.

floors. Comprised of 800 separate pieces of steel, entire sections will be pre-mounted off-site, then transported to the building to be lifted into place. When fully extended, the Terex CTL 180-16 will sit 1,040 ft. (317 m) above ground level, which represents 23 ft.

(7 m) taller than the tower’s estimated highest point, setting the record of the highest crane ever used in the U.K. Lifted by the Terex CTL 180-16, part of the tower’s 59,800 sq. yds. (56,000 sq m) of low iron content glass panels have already been fitted. Crystal clear, instead of a pale shade of green, the specially manufactured glass provides the iceberg effect that Piano expected.

Even though it is impossible to say how long The Shard will hold the record for the tallest building in the European Union, it will remain one of the most technologically advanced constructions built in its time and the highest ever tower in London. “One of the most tried and trusted solutions applied in today’s high-rise building sector involves the use of reinforced steel ‘ties,’ to anchor cranes to a building’s core.” said Francesco Valente, tower crane application engineering manager, Terex Cranes, Fontanafredda.

On mainstream high-rise construction projects, ties are generally of a standard size. However, since it is shaped like a prism, The Shard is very broad at the base, growing substantially narrower towards the summit. This results in an increasingly wider distance between the cranes’ centerline and the building’s core.

Consequently, creating a special solution adapted to the tower’s unusual shape and extreme dimensions was necessary in specific crane configurations beyond a certain height.

“Select came up with a really impressive ‘Mega-tie’ system,” said Valente. “Built using 20-meter-long lattice steel structures made by an experienced local U.K. engineering team, they needed us to cross verify that it could withstand wind forces and the weight of the crane under load safely.”

The first and heaviest crane models used on the project were two Terex CTL 400-24 luffing jib tower cranes configured with 131.2 ft. (40 m) and 164 ft. (50-m) jib lengths to lift prefabricated concrete and steel components weighing up to 21.4 tons (19.5 t).

Model one was mounted on a steel cantilever grillage erected to a final height of 610 ft. (186 m). Model two was erected to a final height of 433 ft. (132 m) on reinforced concrete foundations and anchored with a “Mega-tie” at 305 ft. (93 m).

Verifying crane erection and dismantling processes, checking the “Mega- tie” system to be anchored to the building’s core and calculating the combined impact of heavy lifting and wind forces have all been part of the wide variety of complex calculations and verifications carried out by the application engineering team on The Shard project.

A Manitowoc 2250 crawler crane and a Grove GMK6250L all-terrain crane helped construct a two-story underground parking structure at a mixed-use apartment complex.

A Manitowoc 2250 crawler crane and a Grove GMK6250L allterrain crane helped construct a two-story underground parking structure at a mixed-use apartment complex in Bloomington, Minn.

The cranes were rented from Vic’s Crane and Heavy Haul, Rosemount, Minn., by Hanson Structural Precast, Maple Grove, Minn., the precast subcontractor working for general contractor Frana Companies, Hopkins, Minn. The two cranes lifted and placed the precast concrete wall panels and flooring sections. The heaviest load, a 60 ft. (18.2 m) “double T” floor section, weighed 65,000 lbs. (29,483 kg). The load-bearing walls each weighed 38,000 lbs. (17,236 kg).

Tim Harty, vice president of Vic’s Crane and Heavy Haul, said that the cranes worked well given the configuration of the job site.

“The 2250 was a great fit for our job site. Between the sandy ground and space constraints of the below-grade site, we only had a small runway of space to assemble the crane. The crane had to be 105 ft. from where we placed the concrete sections. As a result, we needed a crane with ample reach and capacity,” Harty stated.

Vic’s first used the GMK6250L all-terrain crane to place the precast wall sections. The sections were taken directly from the trucks and placed into position as load-bearing walls. With the perimeter walls complete, the Manitowoc 2250 crawler crane was used to place the heavier flooring slabs and the interior walls. To ensure the trucks could access the site while keeping the crane on steady ground, the 2250 was assembled with Series 3 counterweights and 210 ft. (64 m) of main boom.

The Grove GMK 6250L has a capacity of 250 tons (226 t) and a full main boom of 236 ft. (72 m).The Manitowoc 2250 has a capacity of 300 tons (272 t) and up to 330 ft. (100 m) of main boom.

Both cranes remained on the job site for one month. The Grove 6250L also will return to work on the structural steel of the eight story apartment structure above the parking ramp.

When complete, the development, called Genesee Apartments and Townhomes, will include 212 apartment units, 22 townhomes and 14,000 sq. ft. (1,300 sq m) of retail and restaurant space. CQ 19

SANY SCC3200 Performs Imperial Crane Service’s Largest Lift Ever SANY America is pleased to announce that Imperial Crane Services of Bridgeview, Ill., has employed a SANY SCC3200 crawler crane in the dealership’s largest single-crane lift to date. On Sept. 24, the 352-ton (320 t) rated SANY SCC3200 picked a 409,000-lb. (185,519 kg) knockout drum at British Petroleum’s Whiting Refinery Modernization Project (WRMP) in Whiting, Ind. “SANY’s cranes are among the strongest in the industry, and the SCC3200 performed exactly as one should expect,” said Kyle Nape, vice president of global sales and marketing at SANY America. “Our cranes are renowned for their performance in demanding environments, and the American market is now gaining firsthand experience with SANY’s quality,” he added.

Since 2008, Imperial Crane Services has worked daily on the WRMP, and earlier this year, the dealership placed a 330-ton (300 t) rated SANY SCC8300 crawler crane at a wind farm construction project in Tehachapi, Calif.

With a focus on rentals and long-term industrial projects, Imperial caters to oil refineries and chemical power plants.

“It’s not often you come across a pick of this magnitude,” said Robert Kaleta, a crane operator who has worked with Imperial for more than 23 years.

“During the job, I felt very secure and confident with the solidness of the crane, and it handled the lift excellently,” he continued.

This newly designed jib helps reduce rigging time for applications where luffing is not required or at sites that do not facilitate the use of a luffing jib.

A fixed jib for this capacity is typically used in offshore oil platform fabrication yards, on transportation and infrastructure projects, as well as in refineries and petrochemical facilities.

Jerry Maloney, global product director of crawler cranes at Manitowoc, said, “Those that will benefit the most from the new fixed jib are users that need to reach up and over, but not necessarily manipulate the jib.”
