emissions zero is the mission Crane Companies Have Vision of Green in New e-Machines

Sims Crane, Tampa, Fla., added Liebherr’s battery-powered crawler crane to its rental fleet early this year.

Electric-powered equipment is nothing new to job sites. Manufacturers have been developing battery-powered machines for years before the fed adopted its goal of zero emissions by 2050. But now mobile crane manufacturers are setting their own zero-emission goals and rolling out new models that use no diesel fuel. Though many are taking a wait-and-see attitude, the road is wide open for a sustainable crane market. The crane industry “must be open-minded and bold to break new ground,” said Gerhard Frainer, managing director, sales of Liebherr-Werk Nenzing. “If you go out about three years, there will be approximately 700 different types of electric vehicles roadside,” said David Knight, CEO of Terbine. 4

The company provides technology for the exchange of IoT data between the mobility and energy sectors. He spoke at ConExpo in March. Knight urged the construction industry to prepare for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in the not-too-distant future. He noted five main reasons equipment end users in the construction industry in general are investing in electric machinery. Lower operating costs, lower maintenance costs, federal and state tax credits, carbon credits and offsets and environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) goals all play a part. First, the savings on diesel costs, alone, are significant, he said. Most OEMs cite four to eight hours of runtime for average use on electric compact equipment, with an eight-hour overnight charge. There’s no idle on an electric machine. An operator can get a day or more of productive work in because they’re not running a machine for eight hours a day. continued on page 8

and generate a very low noise level, the manufacturer said. “Eliminating emissions and reducing noise is a huge advantage in areas sensitive to noise and also for the people working on the job site.” Frainer said the company’s aim with its unplugged cranes was to offer customers an alternative drive design. “As we have already seen with the LB 16 unplugged, the first battery-powered drilling rig, the strategy is a complete success,” he said. Strict requirements regarding environmental sustainability in tenders for construction projects increase the demand for advanced technologies, added Frainer. “For us, it was clear that we extend and successfully establish the design in further product groups.” Two U.S. crane companies are putting the nation’s first batterypowered crawler crane to the test this fall. Liebherr introduced the LR 1250.1 earlier this year. The first two units to roll off the line went to Sims Crane of Tampa, Fla., and Bigge Crane of San Leandro, Calif. Sims partnered with Liebherr to introduce the crawler to the U.S. market. The company took possession of its rig, headed to the rental fleet, in February. “We are honored to partner with Liebherr and be on the forefront to serve a vastly growing need for alternative energy,” said Jackson Sims, vice president. The crawler crane’s battery-powered engine cuts local carbon

emissions completely, the company said. The machine is capable of operating for eight hours unplugged, or for an unlimited amount of time when connected to a power source. Liebherr and Sims said there is no compromise in performance between the electric version of the crawler crane and its dieselpowered counterpart. According to Sims, the crawler is significantly quieter than its diesel counterpart, making it ideal for jobs where noise pollution may be a concern. Bigge added the crane to its rental fleet in September. The company said the crawler is the first of its kind not only in California but on the west coast. Bigge said it acquired the all-electric crane to offer customers an option for an environmentally conscious heavy lifting solution. The crane rental company especially liked that the rig can operate indefinitely while connected to shore power, or for eight hours unplugged. “We have a longstanding relationship with Liebherr and are excited to add their first all-electric crawler crane” to our fleet, said Joe Nelms, vice president. “Bigge’s roots have been established in the San Francisco Bay area since 1916, and we’re excited to be a part of California’s push for a greener future.”  CQ (All photos courtesy of Liebherr and Tadano.)

Additional MLC300 With VPC-MAX Boosts Wilkerson Crane Rental’s Capacity for Larger Tasks

K

A third Manitowoc MLC300 crawler crane with VPCMAX and Wide Boom Plus further equips the crane and equipment rental company to compete for wind farm construction and maintenance jobs.

ansas City, Kan.-based Wilkerson Crane Rental is celebrating its 10th

anniversary with the purchase of another Manitowoc MLC300 latticeboom crawler crane equipped with VPCMAX. Although the company has more than 40 years of experience in hoisting, lift planning, heavy hauling and equipment servicing, Wilkerson Crane Rental only officially came into existence in 2013. That year, Diana Holt put together a rescue package for the soon-to-be liquidated crane division at which her husband Jeff Holt had spent his entire working life as an operator and assembly director, and her father-in-law Fred Holt acted as general manager. Company growth has been consistent with Diana at the helm as CEO, and Jeff as director of operations and the rest of their dedicated team. Wilkerson’s cranes are as far afield as Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Texas and Wyoming. Work has further driven the company’s acquisition of large Manitowoc cranes, due to a booming local economy, a new airport, data centers and a battery

plant, coupled with the rise of wind farms and infrastructure projects. “Four years ago, we bought our first MLC300 with a wide boom and extended upper boom point. This purchase was exclusively for wind farm work and apart from coming back for one three-month job, it’s been conducting maintenance on one wind turbine after another,” said Jeff Holt. “Two years ago, we purchased our second MLC300 with a wide boom and extended upper boom point. This machine started out with wind work as well. Since then, it has done tilt-wall work, as well as infrastructure jobs — where it’s really well suited. We can efficiently mobilize it and it’s perfect for a variety of jobsites,” Holt said. “It’s currently on a long-term jobsite replacing a bridge over Table Rock Lake in Ridgedale, Missouri. “Five months ago, we bought our third MLC300. This time we purchased the VPCMAX and Wide Boom Plus. These two new attachments can be utilized on any of our

three MLC300’s. They make it possible to maintain up to 100-m hub height wind towers. Since the purchase of these attachments, we have used them to perform complete rotor drops on 100-m wind turbines for the past five months. Now, this crane is off to work on a large tire plant in Topeka, Kansas, with main boom and fixed jib,” Holt added. Wilkerson’s latest 386 ton-capacity crawler, acquired from Kirby Smith, joined a portfolio that includes two other MLC300’s, along with a fleet of Manitowoc crawlers consisting of the MLC90-A, 999, 16000, MLC650 with VPC-MAX. The MLC650 with VPCMAX has already completed picks on two bridge projects, and has since been working exclusively on wind farm tasks. Additional equipment from Manitowoc and Grove includes the Grove GMK6350, an RT765E-2, and four (soon to be six) National Crane boom trucks. For more information, visit www.manitowoc.com. 

Four Potain MCT 385 Topless Cranes Deliver Indian Bridge Project

RECORD

Breaker

Four Potain MCT 385 topless tower cranes have now almost completed their work constructing the tallest cable-stayed road bridge in India. The cranes were purchased for the project by Afcons, the main contractor for the bridge build which forms a crucial part of the Khopoli-Kusgaon Connector Project — more commonly known as the PuneMumbai Missing Link. The four MCT 385 cranes arrived on site in 2021. Transporting the slewing section in just seven truckloads reduced the difficulty of traveling along congested and winding roads. Accessing the remote job site was a further obstacle, with each crane initially assembled on the valley floor, to a starting height of 197 ft., before being climbed throughout the project to reach their final working height of 594 ft. All four cranes had jibs permanently configured to 164 ft., handling loads up to 6.7 tons. Their maximum load of 22 tons can be lifted out to a 56 ft. radius. In total, the Potain MCT 385 can accommodate jib lengths of up to 246 ft., and maximum tip load at this length is 3 tons. “We’ve had a relationship with Manitowoc for many years, so we know

The cranes are working on a 8.3-mi. link that is designed to provide a straighter, safer road by bypassing the hairpin turns and areas of landslide risk in the Khandala Ghat area.

we can count on Potain cranes for all of our infrastructure work,” said Amol Kulkarni, assistant general manager- procurement at Afcons. “Our reputation hinged on the successful outcome of this project, so Manitowoc was very helpful in ensuring we selected the right cranes to meet the technical and commercial requirements. And, of course, we knew we could rely on the excellent Potain service team to quickly resolve any issues and provide technical help.”

Government body Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) oversees the ambitious project which has already resulted in several world records. continued on page 22

Sadly, explanatory details are completely lacking, but this image appears to show a small locomotive crane using a clamshell bucket mounted to a fixed stick, a little reminiscent of today’s slurry wall clamshells.

Accessing the remote job site was a further obstacle, with each crane initially assembled on the valley floor, to a starting height of 197 ft., before being climbed throughout the project to reach their final working height of 594 ft. from page 18

These include a record for the widest twin tunnels, which span 154 ft. over 10 lanes. The two tunnels are separated by a 2,132 ft. gap in the scenic Tiger Valley, which called for the construction of a 22

bridge with parallel piers standing at a height of 558 ft. These support the road deck approximately 328 ft. above the valley floor, in conjunction with four pylons averaging 433 ft. in height, and reaching a maximum of 597 ft.

The $800 million project is expected to officially open in January 2025, reducing travel distance by 3.7 mi. and travel time by approximately 25 minutes. For more information, visit www.manitowoc.com. 
