Chargers Break Ground On New $276M El Segundo HQ

The Los Angeles Chargers announced last November they would be moving their team headquarters and training facility to El Segundo following the completion of a construction project that would put their new home situated on a 14-acre site.

On May 18, that announcement became more of a reality when the team held a groundbreaking ceremony where

its new facility will be constructed. City officials, Chargers executives and players, as well as members of the El Segundo community gathered to see shovels put in the dirt.

The $276 million complex was designed and is being constructed by Gensler Sports and includes three full-size fields, along with a main building that includes team meet-

ing rooms, training space, a rooftop hospitality club and an e-sports gaming studio. It also will host Chargers training camp. Sonnenblick-Eichner Co., based in Beverly Hills, Calif., announced in March it had arranged the funding of construction and permanent financing for the facility.

Recognizes Volvo Group’s Keith Brandis Volvo Group North America’s Keith Brandis, vice president of system solutions and partnerships, recently was presented the Industry Distinguished Service Award by the University of California, Riverside’s Bourns College of Engineering — Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT).

Brandis was recognized for his contributions and leadership in several innovative transport initiatives, including the awardwinning Volvo LIGHTS (Low-Impact Green Heavy Transport Solutions) project.

He received the honor during the university’s 30th annual awards ceremony at the Riverside, California research center.

AGC of California Elects Its Nine New Emerging Leaders Associated General Contractors of California (AGC of California) and the AGC Construction Education Foundation (CEF) have announced the election of nine new members to the steering committee of its Emerging Leaders program.

AGC of California’s Emerging Leaders program provides education and training, networking opportunities, business acumen and experience in all facets of construction work, including legislation and policy.

The Emerging Leaders Steering Committee serves as the statewide leadership group for the Emerging Leaders. El Segundo Welcomes NFL Team to Town With Ceremony

The development will be on a site that is owned by Continental Development Corp. and Mar Ventures Inc., both based in El Segundo, Calif. The new digs sit south of El Segundo Boulevard and east of Pacific Coast Highway on Nash Street.

“The campus features a 143,500-square-foot main training building, supported by three natural grass fields with an artificial turf perimeter,” Gensler said in a statement. “To promote player and team success and wellness, the Chargers’ new facility features a range of outdoor amenities including a 7,600-square-foot elevated outdoor terrace, as well as a 3,400-square-foot elevated outdoor turf area and two-lane lap pool for player rehabilitation. The design emphasizes player effi-

ciency and movement, with direct access to the fields from all player areas and coaching spaces.

Additional program amenities include a rooftop hospitality club, full e-sports gaming area and content studios as well as a 3,100square-foot media center.”

The new headquarters will be less than 3 mi. from Los Angeles International Airport and 7 mi. from SoFi Stadium, where the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers both play their NFL home games.

“When searching for a location to establish our hub of football and business operations, we didn’t leave a single stone unturned,” Spanos added. “This process played out for more than four years because we weren’t willing to settle. The facility also will have a rooftop hospitality club, a gaming and content studio, player rehabilitation area and media center.

“The goal is for the Chargers to become the standard of excellence in the NFL,” head coach Brandon Staley said in a statement. “This new facility demonstrates our organization’s commitment to that standard.”

El Segundo has seen a lot of investment from developers, which has brought more companies to the city.

The area also benefits from an abundance of land and surface parking lots prime for redevelopment. The Chargers move to this area also could be a boon for others.

“It’s a big shot in the arm for the entire community and will attract other businesses and businesses that do business with the Chargers,” Lundquist said. He added that despite it being a huge amount of land, it would not result in much traffic since it is a practice facility and will have fewer people coming and going than alternative uses of the land would.

Bobcat Brings Electric Equipment Innovations to Calif.

Bobcat Company recently showcased the capabilities of its battery powered construction equipment lineup at a series of test drive and live demonstration events near Los Angeles in Granada Hills and in Stockton, Calif.

This unique tour featured the Bobcat T7X all-electric compact track loader and two electric compact excavators, the E32e and E10e. Each of these new models are viable alternatives to diesel equipment for government and private fleets to reduce carbon footprints and reduce jobsite noise levels, according to the company.

Attending the events included leaders from California Air Resources Board, City of Los Angeles, Port of Los Angeles, Stanislaus County and other public organizations, as well as Sunbelt Rentals, Bobcat dealers and construction contractors.

Attendees had the opportunity to test drive the machines, participate in live demonstrations and meet with the innovators behind the electric-powered off-road equipment.

“These electric, off-road construction machines are a promising step in our aim to increase access to clean off-road equipment that produces near-zero emissions in California,” said William Robertson, vehicle program specialist with the Mobile Source Control Division at California Air Resources Board.

Debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January 2022, the T7X received two 2022 CES Innovation Awards in the Categories of Vehicle Intelligence & Transportation and Smart Cities. This was the first time the public was invited to experience the T7X since the launch of the machine at CES. The traditional hydraulic work group has been completely replaced with an electrical drive system consisting of electric cylinders and electric drive motors, which means virtually no fluids. The new, all-electric T7X uses less than 1 gal. of eco-friendly coolant compared to 57 gall. of fluid in its diesel/hydraulic equivalent model.

With a compact footprint, quiet operation and zero emissions, the new E32e and E10e battery-powered compact excavators operate with performance that equals or exceeds diesel-powered machines. The electrical motors deliver full torque, regardless of rpm, providing top productivity, smooth hydraulic control and on-demand multifunctioning performance with no noticeable power drop.

Powered by lithium-ion batteries and producing zero emissions, the T7X and electric compact excavators support environmentally sensitive work sites. They allow users to operate inside structures where diesel exhaust is restricted. There also are significantly lower noise levels and vibration with these machines, which improves jobsite communication and safety, and allows work in sound-sensitive areas.

The Bobcat electric machines will deliver up to four hours of active work per charge depending on usage and the application.

While applications vary, each charge can support common daily work operations and the use of work modes for up to four hours of continuous operation time and a full day of operation during intermittent use or a typical contractor workday.
