Brosamer & Wall Inc. Rebuilds Six Bridges Along I-80 Contractor Expects to Complete Job By Summer 2022

Walnut Creek-based Brosamer & Wall Inc. is the general contractor on the $30 million I-80 Six Bridges Project in the city of Vallejo, just north of the Carquinez Bridge.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is spending $30 million via the I-80 Six Bridges Project to increase the vertical clearance to the design standard of 16 ft. 6 in. on six bridges that cross over Interstate 80 (I-80) in the city of Vallejo just north of the Carquinez Bridge.

The work, which started in August 2020, is being executed by Brosamer & Wall Inc., based in Walnut Creek, Calif., and is expected to be completed in August 2022.

The bridges go in a northerly direction over I-80, which is officially designated as westbound/eastbound route, but travels north and south within Vallejo: Magazine Street, Benicia see BRIDGES page 8

VCES Hosts Open House for Its New Redding Facility Volvo Construction Equipment Services (VCES) hosted an open house event on Feb. 9. for the community to celebrate its new facility in Redding, Calif.

This new location will mark the 8th VCES facility in California and is located just off I-5 in Shasta County (4963 Mountain Lakes Blvd.).

This facility will allow VCES to provide equipment sales, rentals and service to the rapidly-growing Redding community. The Redding Chamber of Commerce board members and ambassadors were in attendance, welcoming VCES to Redding with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, while community members in attendance were greeted with lunch and Volvo branded merchandise.

Representatives from Volvo CE and VCES were on hand to greet customers and were available to field equipment questions about the equipment on display.

Much of the growth in Redding has been attributed to the many outdoor activities.

“People often come for vacation, love it and end up moving here” said Rudy Martinez, an ambassador of the Redding Chamber. Another aspect attributed to the growth is the Redding Municipal Airport which now provides convenient travel for business professionals or local vacations.

Todd Jones, of the economic development department of Redding and chamber board member, welcomed VCES to Shasta County prior to the ribbon cutting.

“You are here at just the right time, we need this type of equipment to help build all of the things we are building over the next few years, we anticipate that this growth will continue over the next 3 to 5 years,” Jones said. “We are super happy to have you here and we thank you for helping us build roads in Shasta County.”

David Brand is the territory manager and was hired specifically to open this Redding location. Brand and the representatives at VCES are about “building relationships and partnerships.” Brand is extremely appreciative of the support that he has received from the community and “looks forward to growing with Redding.”

Enerpac EVO Synchronous Lift System Helps Raise Span

The key equipment for jacking is the Enerpac EVO synchronous lift system, model 1240460, used in conjunction with double acting, locking, 150-ton jacks, HCRL-1508 and stroke sensors.

Contractor’s Progress To date, Brosamer & Wall has completed the work on the Springs Road, Magazine Street and Benicia Road bridges and currently is focusing its efforts on the Georgia Street and Tennessee Street bridges.

“These bridges were originally built in the 1950s and 1960s and then retrofitted over the years,” said Danielle Des Champs, B&W’s project manager. “Crews run into differing site conditions that were not shown on the as-builts and not able to be seen until after a bridge is closed. Each bridge has had issues that needed to be addressed before the bridge could be raised. Because five of the six bridges are constructed similarly, Caltrans and Brosamer & Wall were able to take unforeseen conditions on the first bridge and anticipate them at the remaining bridges.

“For example, existing girder embeds required additional bearing pads at five of the bridges,” she added. “We were able to take bearing pads originally ordered for later bridges and use them at the early bridges, allowing time to procure additional bearing pads without delaying the project. Each bridge so far has been completed in less time than the previous bridge as crews repeat the same sequence of work and become more efficient.”

Project Challenges “Some challenges remain the same at each bridge, such as limited hours at night for jacking activities,” she added. “Crews utilize checklists to ensure key equipment and material is on-site and ready when needed. The amount of time for set-up and cleanup actually exceeds the time spent jacking.”

Enerpac EVO synchronous lift system, model 1240460, used in conjunction with double acting, locking, 150-ton jacks, HCRL-1508 and stroke sensors. The equipment was purchased through Zemarc Corporation, which helped to coordinate onsite training by Enerpac representatives.

Crews have completed work on the Springs Road, Magazine Street and Benicia Road bridges and currently is focusing its efforts on the Georgia Street and Tennessee Street bridges.

There is nothing “routine” about the work.

“This project is unique in that the overall quantity of certain items seems like a typical job, but that a small amount of everything is done six separate times,” said Des Champs.

“Certain subcontractors have to return two or three times for each bridge. This requires

a lot of coordination between the different crafts, subcontractors and suppliers to meet the four-month timeframe.”

Strzelecki Takes Over as Skanska’s New Vice President Skanska, a construction and development firm, has hired Justin Strzelecki as vice president and account manager of its building operations in California.

Strzelecki joined Skanska in September 2021 and in his new role will be responsible for a wide range of business development activities across cultural institutions, transportation, aviation, higher education and healthcare projects.
