Construction is now nearly complete on the west side near Boyce Thompson arboretum. “Temporary pavement markings are in the process of being placed,” Herrmann said.

Crews in Arizona are rebuilding a 6-mi. stretch of U.S. Route 60 from Queen Creek east through the town of Superior to the junction with state Route 177. It is part of Arizona’s $32.8 million Route 60: Silver King Road Project. The project started in September 2015 and extends the divided fourlane (two lanes in each direction) highway west to Silver King Road at the western boundary of Superior. The population of the town — located 55 mi. east of Chandler — stands at 2,837, according to the 2010 census. “The work is scheduled for completion ahead of schedule in the fall of 2017,” said Tom Herrmann, Arizona Department of Transportation public information officer. The project includes a new section of two-lane divided highway north of the current two-lane highway, west of Superior. It starts near

Thompson Arboretum and abandoned to the east. Workers initially focused construction on the new highway alignment on the west side of the project area before working their way east into Superior in spring of

2016. By January of this year, motorists traveling both directions on U.S. 60 were moved onto a newly constructed westbound alignment of the highway between mileposts 222 and 225.

Bridge Construction Bridge construction includes: • a new westbound Queen Creek bridge at milepost 222; • Happy Camp bridges in both directions at milepost 223; • Silver King bridges in both directions at milepost 224; • Wash Bridge eastbound at milepost 224.6; • Queen Creek Wash bridge eastbound; • rehab and widening of bridge westbound at milepost 226; and • construction of the Stone Avenue overpass for both directions of traffic at milepost 227. The new U.S. 60 highway will be divided with a dirt median between mileposts 222 and 225 and a concrete median between mileposts 225 and 227. see HIGHWAY page 4

$128M Ina Road Project Marks Milestone

Crews recently poured concrete to create a deck for the first of two new bridges carrying Ina Road over the Santa Cruz River just west of I-10.

Six months in, signs of progress abound at an Arizona Department of Transportation project creating a modern traffic interchange at Ina Road and Interstate 10 and more efficient traffic flow through a growing area. Crews recently poured concrete to create a deck for the first of two new bridges carrying Ina Road over the Santa Cruz River just west of I-10. With supports in place on the west side of I-10, drivers soon will see the first girders set for a bridge that will carry Ina Road over Interstate 10 and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The former interchange configuration had local traffic passing under I-10 and waiting as several dozen trains crossed Ina Road each day. “Those are important milestones in this project,” said Dan

Casmer, ADOT’s resident engineer for the project. “Our teams have done a great job staying on schedule despite the extreme heat earlier this summer and the heavy monsoon rains.” Crews are now more than halfway toward completing work on the west side of I-10, which also includes building new lanes for eastbound I-10 and laying a new frontage road. To allow this work, eastbound I-10 traffic has shifted to the former westbound lanes, and westbound I-10 traffic is using what had been the westbound frontage road. Beginning in early 2018, crews will move to the east side of the freeway. They will remove the remaining I-10 bridge, create new freeway lanes and a new frontage road and comsee MILESTONE page 6
