The third and final phase of reconstruction is under way at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. The $307 million project began with a preliminary phase in 2014 followed by south side work in

2015 and a focus on the west side in 2016. In 2016, problems with blockage in a utility trench slowed progress and necessitated delaying work on the east side until the third phase. The stadium reconstruction was initially scheduled to conclude before the 2017 season. The proj-

ect is now scheduled to finish prior to the 2018 season. Much of the work is going into modernizing the stadium. That includes seats with more legroom, additional restrooms, Wi-Fi availability, cellular coverage and a large video board. East-side work was postponed

for a year to expand on original plans, so 2017 was spent on completing the new football facility at the north end, interior work on west side suites and clubs and installing a massive video board. Crews are now rebuilding the east side followed by more interior finishing in 2019 to wrap up the

project. Isaac Manning, president and CEO of Trinity Works in Ft. Worth, and manager of the stadium project for ASU, said recently that postponing the east side work improves the project long term and meets the university’s goal to have see STADIUM page 4

State Board Approves Five-Year Construction Program A major freight corridor in southern Arizona that moves trucks to and from Mexico for produce and other goods will undergo a full build-out of improvements over the next few years now that the State Transportation Board formally approved the funding for the project. The board approved the two planned construction phases for State Route 189 at its meeting in Globe on June 15. Other major expansion projects along key commerce corridors including Interstate 17 and U.S. 93, along with State Route 260, also were approved as part of the annual update to the Arizona Department of Transportation’s Five-Year Transportation Facilities Construction Program.

The 2019-2023 Five-Year Program includes projects in Greater Arizona and the Maricopa County and Pima County regions. Final approval of the program followed a threemonth comment period allowing the public and agencies to provide feedback. “ADOT’s mission is to provide reliable infrastructure to help move people, goods and services, generate commerce and economic activity, and connect major freight and travel corridors,” said John Halikowski, ADOT Director. “This annual process of delivering key projects is a careful balance between assessing priorities and working within our funding constraints.”

The 2019-2023 Five-Year Program also reaches the department's goal of allocating at least $260 million per year for preservation of bridges and highways throughout the state highway system. In addition, ADOT has proposed increasing the amount of preservation funding to $320 million per year during the next six to 10 years as part of the recently adopted Long-Range Transportation Plan. Preservation projects include repaving highways, filling potholes, extending the life cycle of existing pavement and repairing or reconstructing bridges.
