‘Transformation’ Brings Talladega Fans Closer to Action

By Cindy Riley

In Talladega, Ala., the race is on to complete the first phase of a roughly $50 million Transformation infield project that’s part of a long-term reinvestment in the famed motorsports complex. The highly anticipated results will include interactive attractions and enhanced amenities for fans, sponsors, teams and stakeholders. “We’ve had such a great history here at Talladega, and next year we will celebrate our 50th anniversary,” said Grant Lynch, chairman, Talladega Superspeedway. “Throughout these 50 years, we have seen the greatest racing on the planet. But when looking to the future, we asked ourselves, what do we need to do to take this historical place to the next level, to attract new fans? Transformation is designed to allow families up-close access and to be immersed in the sport like never before.” The first task for crews involves completing an oversized, two-lane vehicle tunnel. Weighing 3.2 million lbs., it will be more than 200 ft. long and 28 ft. wide, with a

clearance height inside of 16 ft., 8 in. Once it is finished, enough sheet waterproofing will have been applied to cover an entire football field. The tunnel, which is scheduled for completion in time for the track’s spring motorsports tripleheader weekend, April 26 to 28, 2019, will allow race team haulers, fans’ recreational vehicles and track tram vehicles to enter and exit the track simultaneously. It will be open 24 hours during event weekends. “This is something we’ve wanted for our fans a long time,” said Lynch. “Fans who come from near and far will now be able to drive in and out of the facility throughout a race weekend with their motorhomes. Before, we have only had a crossover gate, and if they came when the track had race cars or race trucks on it, they would have to be staged outside of the venue until the track was clear. Sometimes that could mean waiting for 10 hours, as the track was occupied. “For years, our fans have asked for this, and we are happy for them. It’s going to make our race track so see TALLADEGA page 5

Construction Begins on UA Birmingham Student Housing

Construction has begun on a 17story student housing project at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The Opus Group, in partnership with The McKinney Fund & Company, announced Jan. 8 the start of construction on a 17-story, mixeduse student living community on the edge of the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus. The building will include 199 residential units accommodating 522 residents. “We are excited to bring a new living experience to students at UAB and the city of Birmingham," said Ben Angelo, senior director, real estate development, Opus Development Company LLC. “This project allows us to showcase our dedicated student housing expertise while fulfilling the evolving demand for student living in a growing community." Located just a few minutes from downtown in the Five Points South neighborhood at the corner of 20th Street S. and 10th Avenue, the development will be built on the former site of “The Break.” “With assistance from Herschell Hamilton of Birmingham-based Bloc Global, this location was strategically selected as it is an easy,

walkable distance to campus and close proximity to all of the great retail, dining and entertainment options in the neighborhood,” Angelo noted. “The Five Points South Neighborhood Association and Five Points Merchant's Group have been incredibly supportive of our project and we feel the residential building will provide a vibrancy to the community, which has already seen significant revitalization.” Ranging from junior studios to four-bedrooms, the units will feature full-size, stainlesssteel appliances, quartz countertops, simulated wood flooring in the common spaces and inunit washers and dryers. High-end finishing touches also will include solid surface shower surrounds, contemporary plumbing and lighting fixtures throughout and custom furniture. In addition to the luxurious living spaces, the building’s shared amenities will include secure parking, a fitness center, spa, study rooms and lounges, and an outdoor amenity deck with fitness areas, fire pits and group seating.

The 17th floor will feature panoramic views of the city and the surrounding area; a coffee bar; a club room with pool tables, ping pong tables and large screen TVs; and an outdoor amenity space with a rooftop pool and grilling stations. The building also will be fully access-controlled with key fob entry points, security cameras throughout and onsite property management. This project is a joint venture partnership with The McKinney Fund. Opus Development Company LLC is the developer. Myefski Architects is the architect. Auburn based Rabren General Contractors is the general contractor, and Creative License Internationalis the interior designer for the project. The development is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2020. For information, visit www.opusgroup.com.
