RAK Ceramics publishes its Environmental, Social and Governance report for 2023

RAK Ceramics published its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report for the year 2023, documenting the company’s achievements in the realm of sustainability and social responsibility. This comprehensive report presents the outcomes of the set objectives for last year and outlines the aspirations and goals for 2024.

RAK Ceramics’ core divisions, which include Tiles, Sanitaryware, Tableware and Faucets, focused on bolstering sustainability efforts through targeted goals and innovative initiatives in 2023. They executed 32 projects aimed at optimising resource usage and reducing environmental impact. The recently opened Smart Factory helped boost productivity, reduced power and gas consumption.

By investing in one of the largest tunnel kilns in the industry, SMART-controlled compressors, VDF installations and other major initiatives, the sanitaryware division effectively reduced its energy consumption in air compressors by nearly half. The faucet division enhanced chrome production productivity, achieving a significant 48.78% reduction in energy intensity. Meanwhile, the tableware division effectively decreased energy intensity of sales and production processes. Additionally, the installation of Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) on 34 machines and equipment helped reduce the overall electricity consumption.

In 2023, RAK Ceramics ensured improved circularity through a multifaceted approach, in which 100% of non-hazardous waste was either reintroduced in production or recycled by third parties. The factories reused 16.7% of fired sanitaryware rejects, 92.5% of reclaimed glaze

and 100% of greenware sanitary ware rejects.

Furthermore, the effective partnership with DHL Global Forwarding and Rail Direct (ETIHAD RAIL) underlined RAK Ceramics’ strong commitment to sustainable logistics solutions.

In the final quarter of 2023, RAK Ceramics showcased its commitment to sustainability at COP28 UAE as a prominent partner in the Sustainability Showcase: Ras Al Khaimah’s Journey and played a pivotal role in discussions on achieving net-zero emissions. Collaborating with SAP, the company highlighted the importance of technology in driving positive change. RAK Ceramics' efforts were also recognised with the EcoLabel Certification Award by the Ras Al Khaimah Environmental Protection and Development Authority, underscoring its leadership in environmental sustainability. The company also made noteworthy progress by successfully onboarding 319 professionals and optimising the workforce to enhance production capacities, which resulted in 762 employees transitioning to new opportunities.

Demonstrating a strong commitment to corporate responsibility, the company invested in various CSR initiatives last year. Notably, in response to the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria, RAK Ceramics partnered with the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation to supply over 1,000 pallets of tiles and sanitaryware products for construction assistance, aiming to facilitate the rebuilding process. Additionally, AED 100,000 was raised and donated to the Emirates Red Crescent UAE and UNICEF to support their ongoing relief efforts in the affected areas.

In regard to social responsibility, RAK Ceramics increased its Emiratisation rate and the representation of women among administrative employees.

14 design-middleeast.com OP-ED
DIMA ALKAWADRI, Assistant Professor at Heriot-Watt University Dubai, outlines how to incorporate acoustic solutions into a design for enhanced environments.
DESIGN MIDDLE EAST | APRIL 2024

Acoustic design can enhance productivity, relaxation, and social interactions. Considering acoustics displays a dedication to diversity, making venues accessible and comfortable for those with auditory sensitivities or hearing impairments.

Designers are increasingly recognising audio as an essential element to enhance the multi-sensory experience in spaces. Multi-sensory spaces engage and stimulate users more effectively, promoting creativity and creating a sense of satisfaction. The purpose of adding a sound effect varies across different projects. It ranges from intentionally utilising sound to pave the path and guide the flow of visitors, using furniture or surfaces as sound reflectors, creating immersive music experiences, or establishing quiet environments for focussed work.

In interior design, introducing different design elements to manipulate sound plays a key role in leaving a lasting impression. For instance, adding water features or natural sounds in the right environment creates a sense of calmness and promotes creativity. Conversely, Sound can lead to a spike in stress levels in a tense environment. Designing buildings usually has to adhere to acoustic codes and ensure compliance with specific acoustic properties to enhance the sound quality for various functions. As a result, multiple design strategies are usually employed to improve noise reduction. For instance, the use of acoustic decorative panels, whether suspended from the ceiling or mounted on walls, can absorb or diffuse sound. Additionally, fabric acoustic panels, covered in fabric, help absorb sound in indoor environments, especially in areas where clear speech is crucial. They come in various colours and fabric textures to suit different preferences. These panels are now designed in various shapes, both geometric and organic, and have a wide range of colours and patterns to choose from. Moreover, there are printed acoustic panels with customisable designs for greater personalization.

An additional function to these panels can also be added such as arranging these panels to provide privacy. Another technique is to vary the heights of ceilings in open areas, which not only reduces noise but also creates a

more comfortable atmosphere. Sometimes soundproof materials can be simply backed to other materials like flooring and wall coverings, to absorb, reduce, or block sound.

The growing understanding of acoustics and the accessibility of finely crafted acoustic furniture have started a significant trend in the market. This trend reflects a rise in awareness of the impact of sound environments on our daily lives, from office spaces to home interiors to interactive spaces and exhibitions. While acoustic features were once seen as a luxury in office settings, they are now viewed as essential for creating a productive workspace.

Acoustic lights also offer a practical solution for addressing sound challenges. Offering both pleasant illumination and incorporating acoustic materials to effectively capture and reduce sound waves in a room. They are both cost-effective and imaginative, allowing for easy adaptation of any space to meet acoustic requirements. Also, they are perfect for maximising the use of limited or irregularly shaped areas. Many acoustic lights are crafted with aesthetics and functionality in mind and are available in a variety of shapes, designs, and styles. These products, such as LEDs, OLEDs, smart lighting, etc enable greater control over lighting, enhance energy efficiency, and feature patterned surfaces that aim to elevate the visual and auditory ambience of any location. Some of the brands such as FLOS and Philips Lighting also provide customised lighting solutions for their customers.

When designing any space, designers must carefully consider acoustics as it significantly impacts functionality and ambience, shaping how individuals experience and interact within a space. Poor acoustics can lead to harsh noises, hindering communication, concentration, and overall comfort. Thoughtful acoustical design can create a conducive environment for various activities, whether it be focused work, relaxation, or social interaction. Moreover, considering acoustics demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that spaces are accessible and comfortable for individuals with auditory sensitivities or hearing impairments. For instance, within public buildings, bustling work environments, and transportation hubs, the principles of inclusive design may include provisions for accessing designated quiet areas.

Integrating thoughtful acoustics into design not only enhances the functionality and comfort of spaces but also contributes to the overall quality of life for occupants, making it a crucial aspect of the design process.

There's a new wonder in the UAE, and it's gaining global attention for all the right reasons.

BAPS Hindu Mandir Abu Dhabi is conveniently placed on two major highways, making it easily accessible to visitors from across the Emirates. Isolated from the chaos of metropolitan life the site brings out the potential of the plot to become a tranquil and spiritual retreat from the daily routine.

RSP was chosen as the principal architects and interior designers for the complex surrounding the temple, and RSP Creative Director Michael Magill was given the task of working his magic on this massive project. Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) designed the inner temple and partnered with RSP to design the exterior complex surrounding the temple, resulting in a masterwork that has left the globe in awe.

RSP's Creative Director, Michael Magill, expresses his pride, “The BAPS Hindu Mandir Abu Dhabi stands as a significant landmark, marking a historical moment in the Middle East and specifically in the UAE. We were fortunate to have been selected as the lead architects and interior designers for the complex around the temple. A symbol of unity and tolerance, echoing the UAE's visionary 2019, theme of tolerance. By commemorating the vision of tolerance, it embodies the spirit of harmony between Islam and Hinduism, showcasing the esteemed values of inclusivity and appreciation.”

It was a challenging project, and Michael wanted to comprehend the feelings and intricacies, so RSP travelled to many global sites and immersed themselves in Hindu culture, customs, and spiritual experiences. The RSP team went on a spiritual journey, visiting Delhi's Akshardham Mandir, the BAPS Monastery in Gujarat, the Sun Temple in Gujarat, and the Shri Swaminarayan temple in London, to learn more about the project they were about to embark on in Abu Dhabi.

Michael describes his journey with this project: "Our journey with the BAPS Hindu Mandir Abu Dhabi began in 2018, when RSP won the design competition against international consultants. Our proposal focussed on a distinct design approach- we envisioned a temple nestled amidst an oasis, surrounded by a majestic mountainous complex. This journey took us on a profound exploration across India, where we immersed ourselves in the rich heritage of iconic temples and monasteries. Drawing from this wealth of inspiration, we designed the Mandir complex as a cohesive narrative, inviting both devotees and tourists on a transformative journey into the sacred Hindu beliefs. Our concept aimed for seamless integration of this narrative throughout

interior details, ensuring an immersive experience for all who visit."

RSP knew that they have to create something spectacular which is frozen in time and will transcend ideologies and space, becoming an immortal, unmoving stone amidst the shifting desert sand, providing the foundation to all those lost in the vast chaos of an ever-changing world.

RSP drew inspiration from their field trip to design the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, taking into account cultural influences and innovative ideas. The physical nature of the complex would be influenced by the Cover

monolithic nature of a traditional Hindu Temple. RSP was inspired to fuse this idea with the local desert nature of the UAE by harmonising the architectural language between the local site and Hindu culture. Michael and the RSP team were inspired by the sacred rivers of India (Ganga, Saraswati, and Yamuna) and their significance in Hinduism, as well as the ghats that enhance the temple complex's physical body. RSP incorporated Vastu principles to establish balance and harmony in the architectural design, influencing both the spiritual and mental aspects. RSP utilised the five senses and the significance of the number 7 in Hinduism to enhance the complex's sensuous and spiritual experience, aiming for full enlightenment.

Story

RSP's spiritual oasis concept aimed to revitalise the land by drawing energy from nearby Mandirs, creating a life-enriching hotspot that will serve as the root of the Hindu Mandir. The temple complex reflects the sensation of a lost nomad encountering an oasis in the desert, resonating with its aura. Even the concept of ghats is critical in framing the rivers and exalting the sacred aspect of the temple, which RSP brilliantly incorporated into their design. Like most traditional Hindu temples, a shaded walkway framing the sacred grounds of the temple gave rise to the concept of the parikrama. The long walkways with vertical louvres are abstractions that evoke the historical columns of the old walkways.

A diversified, minimalistic palette of whites, brass, timber, and concrete is employed as the foundational base of the interior pieces, creating a fantastic material play that engages the senses of touch and sight. These soft, earthy pastel colours evoke the feeling of elegance and refined simplicity that reflects the opulent yet modest essence of Hinduism. They also refer to the striking imagery of a Hindu temple's monolithic stone and intricately engraved golden bronze details.

The Mandir's Amphitheatre is a highlight. As the day turns to night, the sunset's rays reflect on the temple stone and surrounding waters, creating a tantalising crimson aura that captivates and stimulates visitors. The Mandir also has The VIP majlis offers breathtaking views of the Hindu temple, immersing visitors in its spiritual majesty. The majlis is designed in delicate tones of sand and pastel blues, creating a contrast with the surrounding views and drawing visitors' attention to the temple's attractive appearance.

Michael further explains: "In addition to serving as a place of

worship and meditation, we designed the BAPS Hindu Mandir Abu Dhabi to include a range of facilities catering to the needs of both devotees and visitors. Beyond its sacred and worship areas, the complex includes an education center, providing opportunities for learning and enlightenment. It also includes accommodation for the sadhus, ensuring a nurturing environment for spiritual practitioners. For tourists and non-Hindu visitors, the Mandir complex offers a wealth of experiences, including exhibition and gallery spaces showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Hinduism, an outdoor amphitheater for hosting events with a capacity of up to 1,500 people, a state-of-the-art sports center, and convention halls capable of accommodating gatherings of up to 2,500 people. Additionally, an exclusive majlis is reserved for VIP guests, offering a bespoke experience that reflects the Mandir's commitment to hospitality and inclusivity."

This Mandir provides a wholesome experience to visitors, and there is an education centre. The education cluster's classrooms provide a creative learning environment for both students and tourists.

Visitors may refuel themselves after their activities in the food court, which offers a range of food options. The food court's design resembles a desert garden, connecting the inside and external scenery. The desert garden style incorporates sand tones, soft light wood finishes, and inside vegetation to create a living environment. The combination of simple materials and landscaping produces a contemporary mood while relaxing the acoustics. Accent colours add a fresh and unique sense.

So, if you wish to feel spiritually connected to India's holy rivers and ghats, the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi will bring peace and blessing to your heart and soul.

IN TERMS OF DESIGN AND MATERIALS, HOW DO GLOBAL TRENDS ALIGN OR DIFFER FROM THOSE IN THE MIDDLE EAST? ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC REGIONAL TRENDS THAT HAVE EMERGED RECENTLY?

More and more people around the world are concerned about sustainability and protecting the environment – a development that is influencing current interior trends and therefore shaping the flooring industry too. Natural materials are experiencing a boost in both carpets and floor coverings. However, recycled and recyclable alternatives are also becoming increasingly popular. In the flooring segment, wood and stone finishes, cork flooring and parquet are very popular at the moment.

When it comes to carpets, there is a growing global trend towards

larger sizes. Carpets are intended to have a significant impact on the interior design and atmosphere of a room - whether as a decorative centrepiece, a sensory highlight to maximise cosiness or to separate different living areas. In general, carpet trends are strongly influenced by current interior design trends. Trend experts such as Holly Becker (decor8), Stefan Nilsson (Trendstefan) and Gabriela Kaiser (TRENDagentur Gabriela Kaiser) see an increase in colourful interiors as a counterpoint to the minimalist interior trends in natural colour palettes that have dominated the furnishing industry in recent years. Other factors contributing to this developing trend are the 'mood-lifting' properties and the 'desire for change' in difficult economic times. An emerging trend we are seeing, particularly in the Middle East, is the reinterpretation of traditional designs and techniques with a nod to their roots.

FOR NEWCOMERS TO DOMOTEX MIDDLE EAST OR THOSE CONSIDERING ATTENDING, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO MAXIMIZE THEIR EXPERIENCE AND ENGAGEMENT DURING THE EVENT?

Plan your trip well in advance – our travel recommendations on our website can help. To get the most out of the event, I also recommend that you look at the exhibiting companies on our website in advance. Not only will this give you a good idea of what to expect, but it will also allow you to contact key exhibitors in advance and arrange meetings. Allow yourself enough time at the show to be inspired by products and conversations, rather than rushing from meeting to meeting. This is a unique opportunity to network with other professionals - make the most of it!

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES FACING THE

CARPET AND FLOORING INDUSTRY TODAY, AND WHAT OPPORTUNITIES DO THESE CHALLENGES PRESENT?

We are sensing a lot of uncertainty, which is currently affecting most markets, not just the carpet and flooring industry. Following the pandemic and due to the current global crises such as climate change and the war in the Ukraine, many consumers are more conscious and cost-sensitive, not spending as much as they used to. Therefore, a lot of smaller and medium-sized companies are struggling right now to stay in business.

These challgenes offer a great opportunity for businesses to evaluate and adapt their own portfolio. Companies must now focus on their best sellers, discontinue collections and products that are not performing well and complement their portfolio with products that promise long-term success. In a world where resources are becoming scarcer and the consequences of the climate crisis are a matter of concern, those who offer sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions will stand to gain. Another opportunity are trade fairs such as DOMOTEX Middle East. Especially in challenging times, they offer reliable business platforms. At the show, all senses are addressed, challenged and stimulated. Carpets and floor coverings live from their haptics and their quality! Visitors can see and touch the products presented, convince themselves of the quality on site and obtain information directly from the manufacturers. The carpet and flooring sector absolutely needs this in order to be successful. To ensure the success of our exhibitors, we plan to become the leading event for carpets and floor coverings in the Middle East. Our next editions will be even bigger than this year's. We already have a ton of ideas for special displays and collaborations in mind. For now, though, we're going to focus on the first show.

Never take the second step before you've taken the first.

BASED ON CURRENT TRENDS AND INDUSTRY FEEDBACK, WHAT IS THE FUTURE OUTLOOK FOR THE CARPET AND FLOORING INDUSTRY IN THE MIDDLE EAST?

Despite global economic challenges, the construction sector in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has not only proved remarkably resilient, but is continuously growing. These regions were forecasted to be among the best performing regions for construction activity in 2023 and beyond, according to GlobalData's Global Construction Outlook to 2027 report, which was published in early 2023. With more and more specific construction projects in Dubai, such as Dubai Creek Harbour and other Emaar projects, in Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat or Yas Island or in the KSA, such as NEOM, THE LINE and GIDORI in the pipeline, the Middle East will continue to be an absolute boom region for all companies involved in building and furnishing for decades to come. This positive outlook has a knock-on effect on related sectors such as real estate, interior design, furnishings and flooring. Therefore, the demand for carpets and floor coverings is constantly growing. The Middle East floor coverings and carpets market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.2 percent from US$8.6 billion in 2022 to around US$14.55 billion by 2030.

Despite the recent fluctuations experienced by the market, OMNIYAT was able to consistently grow its portfolio and deliver on its vision, presenting new destinations and achieving record numbers that contributed to maintaining the city’s leading position relative to other markets.

Can you talk more about the VELA VIENTO launch and how it is different from the rest of the projects?

The VELA VIENTO launch marks a significant milestone in the continuous development of Marasi Bay but also sets itself apart from other projects, including its sister property, VELA. This project presents our overarching vision shared with VELA and The Lana, which, through the Marasi Bay waterfront promenade, creates a connection with nature through landscaped gardens and communal areas, introducing a new dimension to urban living.

VELA VIENTO will be crowned by two four-bedroom penthouses and three signature duplex apartments with a distinctive concept that captures the idea of ‘living in the sky’. The architectural characteristics of the spaces and bridges between the property’s two towers meet to create an 'in the sky' residential experience. This places our vision of innovation at the heart of design, complementing the living spaces that distinguish VELA VIENTO from other projects and offering residents a unique and elevated lifestyle. Interview

How are you embracing emerging trends like PropTech and smart buildings?

We actively embrace emerging PropTech trends and smart building technologies to enhance our customers' experiences and streamline operations. We closely track the latest smart building innovations and evaluate how they can be integrated into our developments to create more innovative, efficient, and enjoyable spaces. For example, our projects have implemented advanced Building Management and Lighting Control Systems that enable remote monitoring, improved HVAC, lighting efficiency controls and energy savings.

30 design-middleeast.com DESIGN MIDDLE EAST | APRIL 2024

PropTech and smart buildings will remain key priorities as we develop new landmark masterpieces. By embracing these trends early on, we aim to provide our clients with intelligent, connected, technologically advanced living and working environments.

Can you elaborate on your commitment to sustainability and responsible development?

We are deeply committed to incorporating sustainability and responsible development practices. We strive to set new

benchmarks in environmental performance and human well-being through high ratings in leading certification frameworks.

Our initiatives to ensure a sustainable future include conducting detailed operational carbon modelling for all of our future projects, innovating our design, and building assessment processes and all-electric building where feasible to achieve operational net-zero carbon for all of our new-build assets by 2030, and ultimately, net-zero for the whole life cycle by 2050.

Ultimately, our goal is to provide unparalleled, limitless uber-luxury experiences that integrate sus-

tainable practices and solutions that, in turn, elevate the living experience. We aim to develop a global showcase for how the world’s most ambitious sustainability goals and human-centric wellness targets can converge in a single architectural landmark. It represents our steadfast commitment to pushing boundaries in responsible development.

What is your vision for the future of the real estate landscape in Dubai and beyond?

In Dubai and beyond, I see a future where real estate goes beyond conventional boundaries, as there will always be a demand for the highest levels of luxury and what can be done to achieve that. Therefore, we aim to be at the forefront of what defines uber-luxury living, and we will continue to reach unprecedented levels, influencing our clientele's desires and aspirational expectations. OMNIYAT will strive to contribute to setting these heightened expectations, embarking on each project to ensure that each one achieves its own distinct and unique identity.

What advice would you give to aspiring developers or entrepreneurs in the region?

One key to success is maintaining a future-focussed mindset. Looking five or ten years into the future and observing current trends to identify potential opportunities that may serve you later allows you to remain one step ahead. It is also essential to remember that people are at the heart of what we do as curators of living spaces. This necessitates that, above all else, the spaces we design must serve to make their inhabitants feel well-adjusted and acclimated beyond aesthetic beauty.

INFLUENCE OF CULTURE ON

FIRAS ALSAHIN, CO-FOUNDER AND DESIGN DIRECTOR AT 4SPACE, DESCRIBES HOW INTERESTING CULTURAL ELEMENTS ARE A WONDERFUL PART OF STORYTELLING IN DESIGN

In hospitality design, integrating cultural elements is increasingly recognised as a pivotal factor in creating spaces that offer more than just aesthetic appeal.

Firas Alsahin, Co-Founder & Design Director at 4SPACE and celebrated Designer of the Year, champions that embedding cultural authenticity within design projects enhances visual appeal and deepens the connection between guests and the space. This design ap-

proach emphasises the value of storytelling, with each feature in a place contributing to a narrative that adds cultural richness and authenticity to the guest experience.

Incorporating cultural elements into hospitality design involves a thoughtful exploration of local artistry, traditions, and craftsmanship. By collaborating with local artisans and incorporating indigenous materials and art forms, designers like Firas ensure that each project resonates with the culture of its location. This commitment extends to the culinary experience, where the design of dining spaces reflects traditional cooking methods and local flavors, further immersing guests in the cultural narrative of the space.

Firas' design philosophy advocates for spaces that serve as canvases for storytelling, where murals, artifacts, and interactive displays invite guests to engage with the cultural heritage of the locale. This approach nurtures a deeper understanding and appreciation of the culture and creates a unique and memorable experience for guests. The challenge lies in balancing authenticity and global appeal, ensuring the design resonates with a diverse audience while maintaining cultural integrity.

Navigating the complexities of cultural integration requires careful consideration to avoid potential misrepresentation and to ensure that the design respects and honors the culture it aims to represent. This involves a delicate balance of incorporating cultural elements in a way that is both respectful and authentic, avoiding

Despite the challenges, the integration of cultural elements in hospitality design presents an opportunity to create spaces that are not only visually captivating but also rich in cultural significance. DESIGN MIDDLE EAST | APRIL 2024

Fast forward to today, and we find ourselves at the helm of a booming business that began only 15 months ago. With no professional interior design degree and a strong desire to make every room beautiful, here I am with over ten successful projects under our belt, including the complete refurbishment of six entire properties totaling 18,000sqft. Our journey has been nothing short of incredible.

How would you describe your design aesthetics?

I'd say our style is modern and sleek, but we are not a fan of sticking to rigid design rules. We enjoy merging diverse styles to create something unique. Instead of the typical beiges and greys that we see everywhere, we like to add pops of colour now and then. I especially enjoy adding beautiful natural stones, polished black mirrors, and the warmth of soft wood tones.

It's vital to me that everything feels balanced, comfortable, and harmonic, with a gentle touch throughout. We're also glad to claim that we excel in repurposing many of our client's existing furniture items, contributing to the circular economy in the process.

Who are your key customers?

Our core clientele consists of high-net-worth individuals who have excelled in their business and professional endeavors. They highly regard both their time and our expertise, seeking to translate their successes into the ambiance of their homes and workplaces.

How has the interior fit-out industry changed over the years?

their new property. With the family busy settling their affairs abroad, they granted power of attorney to their accountant to oversee expenses while entrusting us with the design and renovation process.

Throughout the three-month journey, we maintained regular communication through weekly calls, with clients expressing their full confidence in our expertise.

Upon their return, they were thrilled to find their home surpassing all their expectations.

The home underwent a flawless transformation, featuring pristine white marble flooring and a design theme of deep olive and amber tones that flowed throughout. The client’s family was beyond ecstatic with the outcome, and so were we!

Following the handover, we formed a lasting connection, with happy memories now kept in the heart of their lovely home.

What are the challenges and highlights of working with clients from the GCC?

Clients from the GCC appreciate luxurious and high-end designs, providing opportunities for creativity and innovation. Building strong relationships with clients is valued in the GCC culture, leading to long-term partnerships and repeat business.

At the same time, understanding and navigating cultural norms and preferences can be challenging, as cultural expectations vary among GCC countries.

Clients here have high standards and expectations, which can put pressure on amateur designers and contractors – and this is where we come in, as a full-service Design & Build company deeply committed to delivering exceptional results.

Could you tell us something about your current project?

Currently, we're working on several exciting full-renovation projects. These include a spacious villa nestled in the Green Community, a diamond trader's office located in Al Mas Tower, a charming townhouse in Springs, a lavish apartment in JLT, and a handful more.

We're genuinely thrilled to lend our expertise to these clients. Each project holds a special place in our hearts – like our own babies. We strive to tailor our creative work to the unique tastes of our client, ensuring that every endeavor reflects their distinct personalities.

The curved sofa and eye-catching pendant lights elevate the space's interior design.

What else can we expect to see from the brand in the coming years?

We are exploring new territories this year with many exciting projects under discussion (both commercial and residential). We are also working on establishing a few strategic partnerships with large retailers in our industry. To meet the needs of the growing business, we are expanding our teams of design and fit-out professionals. The future seems promising, with more and more clients valuing our creative finesse. We are beyond thrilled to manifest what we dreamt of!

Joelle Nader, Sedus' Managing Director, discusses ergonomic furniture, the impact of technology on design, workplace trends, and what to expect from the brand in the near future.

EXCELLENCE Ergonomic

Can you give a quick overview of what you do professionally at Sedus and what do you find most meaningful about your work?

I belong to Sedus family since 2009, and currently responsible of Sedus Office Furniture LLC, a subsidiary of Sedus, overlooking the Middle East markets. We are in the process of establishing our Sedus license in Riyadh.

Being part of a company owned by two charitable foundations is the most rewarding aspect of my work. Knowing that 2/3 of our profits are used for projects that protect the Environment, promote health and provide a brighter future for underprivileged children, gives me a better sense of belonging and a purpose in my daily work.

I also find a great fulfilment from building trust, offering value, and making a positive effect with my existing clients, as well as collaborating with new ones.

What does ergonomics mean to you?

Ergonomics is about creating a harmonious relationship between humans and the things they interact with. It's a field that is constantly evolving as technology changes and our understanding of human needs grows.

At Sedus, physical ergonomics was first looked at in 1926 when the word “Ergonomics” did not even exist we designed and produced the first spring-mounted swivel chair in Europe called "Federdreh" chair, that you can still find in our museum in Germany.

DESIGN MIDDLE EAST | APRIL 2024 42 design-middleeast.com
Ergonomics

We design office furniture for promoting back health, encouraging active working, and helping break the monotony of sitting at a desk chair and allowing easy integration of movement into daily work life, such as with our Se Lab height-adjustable desks. This increased activity boosts circulation and blood flow, leading to positive effects on concentration and productivity.

How important do you believe company culture is to an organisation’s success?

Company culture is extremely important for a company's success. It shapes how employees feel and work together. A positive culture leads to happier employees, better teamwork, and more innovation. It also helps attract great talent and builds trust with customers. Overall, a strong company culture is essential for long-term success.

Our philosophy at Sedus is built on 153 years of traditional values that are still relevant today. We believe that people can only do their best and succeed when they feel good. What's good for individuals is also good for businesses. This belief guides everything we do.

At Sedus, we understand that furniture design can be a powerful tool for shaping and reflecting the company culture, which can in turn influence employee’s wellbeing, productivity, and talent acquisition. We do so by designing furniture that caters to specific work styles and company values. This includes ergonomic furniture for health-conscious companies, modular furniture for collaboration-focused workplaces, or sustainable furniture for environmentally friendly organisations.

What is your best advice on maximising productivity in the office?

The design of the workspace plays an important factor in maximizing productivity. Moving away from static assigned desks for all and creating a variety of workspaces designed for different activities allows employees to choose the environment that best suits their current task. Furnishing the office with solutions that adapt to the future changes, to an environment of agile working and to a freedom of movement maximises productivity.

Prioritising ergonomic furniture that promotes good posture and comfort. Choosing furniture made from recycled materials with eco-friendly manufacturing processes.

This promotes a healthy work environment and aligns with a growing focus on sustainability.

Maximise natural light exposure throughout the office space. Studies have shown natural light can improve mood, creativity, and focus. Incorporate plants and other nature-inspired elements into the design. Biophilic design can reduce stress and contribute to a more positive work environment.

Are your customers changing their buying habits to favour products made with sustainable processes?

Yes. Our customers are searching for manufacturers that are “Doing business sustainably”.

Ergonomics

Sedus prioritises sustainability, as evidenced by numerous awards and certifications, such as Christof Stoll being named Eco Manager of the Year in 1993, achieving Eco Audit compliance with EU standards in 1995, and becoming the first office furniture manufacturer to receive EMAS III certification in 2010. Sedus's next goal is to become CO2 neutral by 2025.

Which is why at Sedus, we are adopting a holistic approach that protects the environment and conserves resources for the future.

As early as the development stage we think about the choice of materials thus the assessment of life cycles and the associated environmental impacts are already taken into account in the development process. Being a German manufacturer, we ensure that short distances certified materials. We produce using 100% green electricity to reduce CO2 emissions and continue the optimisation of material e.g. converting the electroplating plant from chromium (VI) to chromium (III). We optimise our packaging systems by reducing the packing by 50% thanks to a modular system and using recyclable packaging materials.

With office technology changing—companies employing tablet computers, more people using mobile phones—can you talk about the new design problems Sedus' engineers and designers are facing today?

Absolutely! The rise of new technologies like tablets, mobile phones, and even wearable tech has thrown some curveballs at traditional office furniture design. At Sedus ergonomics is for evolving devices and to support non-traditional work settings. Our designers who have already incorporated mobile charging ports and integrated charging ports to not only fixed and sit-stand workstations but also to all our soft seating the latest being the se:living, storage spaces such as the se:matrix and se:hub, workshop tools and room elements such as the se:cubes. This thoughtful integration of power outlets, USB ports, and wireless charging options into our furniture helps avoid tangled wires and makes charging devices easier for users.

What workplace trends do you see on the horizon?

The workplace models is changing to adapt to the hybrid model. As remote work becomes common, offices are no longer just for work. They are evolving to compete with new hybrid workspaces.

The workspaces need to blend with places like homes, hotels, and public spots, focusing on people's wellbeing.

Balancing work and life is crucial, so offices should support healthy workloads and reduce stress for employees. Digital advancements and flexible schedules drive this change, this is why today’s workspace emphasises on the community, tech support, and teamwork to provide a flexible work options.

Another feature in the Hybrid working model, is the management

system for smart working. It is found with our Se Connects system, which is an intelligent solution for the use and management of workspaces. Employees can easily find and book a free workplace or reserve meeting rooms, It is also a great system for the Facility managers to measure the occupancy of the space and optimise the working environment.

There will likely be a growing focus on incorporating elements of nature into office design to improve employee well-being and creativity. This could involve things like natural light, plants, and even water features. As environmental concerns continue to grow, I expect to see a stronger focus on sustainable furniture made from recycled materials and with eco-friendly manufacturing processes. Overall, the future of office design seems to be headed towards creating dynamic, adaptable, and employee-centric workspaces that prioritise well-being, comfort, and technological integration while keeping sustainability in mind.

What office chair do you sit in and why? What specific features about your office chair do you appreciate and enjoy?

I am sitting on the Sedus Open Up chair. Its ergonomic shape guarantees the right working posture, its functions enable relaxation and the flexibility of the backrest allows constant movements. All in all, the Open Up truly helps in clearing your mind and inspiring efficient work.

How can companies begin to reinvent the workplace to better meet the evolving needs of people?

Offering employees flexibility and choice. Mind you the office is now hosting five generations traditionalists, baby boomers, Generation X, millennials, and Generation Z. Offering a variety of workspaces for different activities and different styles of work empowers employees to choose the setting that best suits their current task and maximises productivity. Embracing remote work and hybrid models. This allows employees more flexibility in where and when they work, leading to better work-life balance and potentially attracting a wider talent pool. Invest in technology that allows employees to work efficiently from anywhere. Explore innovative technology like sit-stand desks that adjust electronically for better ergonomics. Focus on ergonomics and speak to Sedus.

Leave us with three things we should be on the lookout for from Sedus.

1- Sedus new concept called “The Temptation Office”: Innovative solutions for the workplace of the future

2- The renovation of our showroom space in Dubai displaying the new products

3- Our new showroom space in Riyadh to be announced officially soon.

In Chinese, the word “MOLI” stands for jasmine, which represents the moon’s secrets, purity, and femininity. This cultural dimension adds another layer to the dining experience, fostering a relationship that goes beyond taste.

The

The brand aims to build strong connections with the local community by participating in events, collaborating with local businesses, and showcasing regional flavors to create a sense of belonging and loyalty.

Tell us about your journey. How did it all start?

I’m delighted to take you on the incredible journey that led to the establishment of SHI Restaurant on Bluewater Island and the exciting venture, MOLI by SHI. As a mother of three and a businesswoman since my late teens, my journey is one of passion, dreams, and seizing opportunities.

Dubai, a city I’ve cherished for a decade, became the stage for a transformative idea during the challenging days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic, which brought my family to Dubai for an extended period due to online learning of my children, turned a whimsical idea into reality. As Bluewaters started to develop, I was going to run there. The first time I saw the area, I was blown away by how beautiful it was. I knew that I had to live here. I started running here every day. Dreaming about how I wanted to live and work in this area. While having dinner with my husband on Bluewaters, we playfully joked about opening a restaurant in the empty unit next door. That conversation sparked a relentless vision, and in January 2021, I walked into the Meraas office. Pointing directly at the chosen unit, I signed on the spot. I chose contractors and it took us four months to build SHI.

Choosing Chinese cuisine for its intricate flavours, SHI became a dream realised. Under the guidance of Chef Li Yuan Hui, formerly of Hakkasan Mumbai and Qatar, SHI represents a culinary journey with Michelin-style finesse. Fully licensed, SHI offers a curated wine list, Asian-inspired cocktails, and an exclusive upstairs bar and lounge area.

Navigating the pressure to perform for Instagram, I crafted a minimalistic style for SHI’s Instagram page. In Dubai, where the audience leans towards maximalism, the challenge was to balance popular preferences with SHI’s essence. It’s not about gimmicks; it’s about delivering great food, an electric ambiance, and impeccable service.

The journey continued with the opening of MOLI by SHI, adding a classy, contemporary twist to traditional Chinese dishes. Located in Dubai Hills Business Park and designed by 4SPACE Architecture & Interior Design.

Can you tell us what are distinct features of Moli?

A Culinary Marvel MOLI by SHI, our latest culinary venture, is not just a restaurant; it’s a sensory journey that brings traditional Chinese flavours into a contemporary realm. Here are some distinct features that set MOLI apart:

VERSATILE DINING SPACES: From cosy tables for couples to spacious circular tables designed for communal enjoyment, MOLI ensures a welcoming atmosphere for every occasion. The inclusion of a lazy Susan at some tables adds a playful

touch, allowing diners to spin and share dishes seamlessly.

CLASSY CONTEMPORARY

TWIST: MOLI takes traditional Chinese dishes and décor, infusing them with a classy, contemporary twist. The aim is to offer a dining experience that marries the rich heritage of Chinese cuisine with modern aesthetics.

INSPIRATION FROM CHINA:

The design of MOLI draws inspiration from the heart of China, creating an ambiance that reflects the cultural richness and vibrancy of this culinary powerhouse. Every element is thoughtfully curated to transport guests to the heart of China.

GLAMOROUS VENUE:

Located in Building 4 in Dubai Hills Business Park, MOLI promises to be a glamorous venue. The design, courtesy of 4SPACE Architecture & Interior Design, ensures that every corner is Instagram-worthy, inviting guests to capture

and share their memorable moments. MOLI is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every aspect is visually stunning. From the décor to the presentation of dishes, we’ve created an environment that caters to the social media era, where guests can capture and share their dining experiences.

CONTEMPORARY

CULINARY DELIGHTS: The menu at MOLI is a fusion of tradition and innovation. Expect a tantalising array of contemporary interpretations of classic Chinese dishes, crafted with precision and flair by our talented culinary team.

EXCLUSIVITY: MOLI offers an exclusive dining experience, where guests can indulge in the richness of Chinese cuisine in a sophisticated and intimate setting. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s a destination for those seeking a refined and unique culinary adventure.

Food and drinks are the main highlights of any restaurant. What are some of the unique dishes that are recommended to try?

At our culinary haven, we take immense pride in curating a symphony of flavours that not only tantalise the taste buds but also transport diners to the heart of authentic Chinese gastronomy. Try Prawn Har Gau, Chicken Xiao Long Bao, Yun Nan Style Wild Mushroom, Wensi Tofu Hot & Sour Soup, Crispy Angus Beef Eggplant Roll, Traditional Squirrel Sea Bass, Kungpao Cornfed Chicken and Hofan Noodles with Wagyu Beef, among other dishes.

What are some of the trends you see impacting the hospitality industry?

We believe that adopting environmentally conscious efforts, such as decreasing food waste, sourcing local products, and introducing

eco-friendly packaging, will help us meet the growing consumer demand for sustainable eating options. Also, technology is being integrated into different parts of hospitality. There is a growing interest in health-conscious dining options, with an emphasis on nutritious products, clear labelling, and menu items that cater to specific dietary preferences and constraints. Offering diverse cuisines, inviting spaces, and inclusive practices that cater to people from many backgrounds and identities are all key ways to embrace inclusivity and celebrate cultural variety.

What are your targets and expectations for 2024?

With a long-term vision, we hope to open five restaurants in Dubai under the SHI Group. In terms of expansion, we see the dynamic culinary scene in Saudi Arabia and are constantly seeking ways to access this lively market. As part of our worldwide ambition, we want to bring the SHI Group experience to London. The timingwill be deliberate, maybe matching with the period when my children begin their university studies in the city. Our dedication to cultural enrichment includes building closer links within the local community. Through collaborations, events, and initiatives, we hope to become an important part of Dubai's cultural tapestry.
