WELCOME TO MAGIC UNDER THE MANGROVES 2023!
Whether you are a longtime supporter of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida or are just getting acquainted with our mission, we hope you feel the “Magic” of this evening.
This is the 19th anniversary of this event which to date has raised over $17 million to protect the land, water, wildlife and future of Southwest Florida.
Magic has become an integral part of funding the work of the Conservancy which includes: science and research, policy and advocacy, wildlife rehabilitation, and educating the next generation.
It is through events like Magic that the Conservancy is able to continue this important work – so we hope you are inspired to help.
The importance of this mission is too great to do it alone and that is why the Conservancy works in collaboration with many partners including The Water School at FGCU, Collier Community Foundation, The Naples Zoo, Naples Botanical Garden, Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Growing Climate Solutions, Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation, among numerous others.
Nature provides us many benefits. Mangroves protect our coastal development, wetlands filter and recharge our fresh water, forests sequester carbon. By protecting nature, we are in effect protecting ourselves and the quality of life that brought us to Southwest Florida. That is why the Conservancy supports smart growth strategies that allow for the inevitable growth of the region while preserving the natural assets that benefit everyone.
So please enjoy this special evening and remember that tonight is not just about supporting the Conservancy today but the quality of life here for decades to come.

For almost 60 years the Conservancy of Southwest Florida has been a leading environmental advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the water, land, wildlife and future of our five-county region.
EDUCATION:
Conservancy.org/our-work/education
From Pre-K through gray, the Environmental Education team at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida is actively connecting with all ages. We reach more than 10,000 local school students each year through field trips to the Conservancy Nature Center and outreach programs at area schools through our Learning Adventures Bus (LAB).
All generations are responsible for making decisions that will shape and protect the environmental health of Southwest Florida. Sound environmental education provides a foundation for making responsible decisions in the future.
Today’s environmental initiatives undertaken by the Conservancy will also influence our quality of life for the next 20, 30, 50 years and beyond. It takes many gifts of time, talent and treasure to support this important work.
POLICY:
Conservancy.org/our-work/policy
Keeping our region healthy, livable, and functioning well is a complex task. It’s about balancing conservation with economic health and making sure decisions and actions are supported by science-based information and policies. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida Policy and Advocacy Department helps protect our wild lands, wildlife, and our waters. We steward smart growth in our area — advising on transportation planning and land-use decisions and helping to preserve habitat and waterways. The Conservancy works actively with decisionmakers to ensure a bright future for generations to come.
8
SCIENCE:
Conservancy.org/our-work/science
Conservancy biologists specialize in a wide variety of research initiatives that focus on Southwest Florida’s unique habitats and wildlife, ranging from our estuaries to our uplands, urban environments, to the Western Everglades.
The work of the Environmental Science Department includes ecological research and monitoring programs, restoration initiatives, and ongoing collaboration with universities, state and federal agencies, as well as community outreach.
Coastal Ecology, Invasive Species, Western Everglades, and Urban Ecology are the focus areas of the department. We conduct research to enhance our understanding of the wildlife and the biological communities that are necessary to their survival.
WILDLIFE REHABILITATION:
Conservancy.org/our-work/wildliferehabilitation
Providing medical care to injured wildlife has been a priority of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida since 1979. Caring citizens rescue bobcats, deer, herons, gopher tortoises, pelicans, and many other species of native animals and drop them off at the Conservancy for treatment. The wildlife rehabilitation team and a group of dedicated volunteers provide supportive care with the goal of releasing as many “patients” as possible back to their natural habitats.
Over 4,200 injured, sick, and orphaned native animals are admitted to the von Arx Wildlife Hospital each year. Most of those injuries stem from interactions that involve humans — including car strikes, domestic pet attacks, window collisions, fishing line and hook injuries, gunshots, and toxicosis.

EAGLE AWARD
The Conservancy of Southwest Florida bestowed its highest honor, the Eagle Award, to Sue Dalton. The award was presented at the Annual Meeting for members on January 17.
As a Naples resident, Sue Dalton has helped educate more than 150,000 visitors and 30,000 area students in 10 years at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
As the heart behind the creation of Magic Under the Mangroves, the successful fundraising event started 18 years ago and has raised $17 million for Conservancy programs.
She and her late husband William, who passed away in 2012, provided the leadership gift to help create the Dalton Discovery Center that opened in 2012, a centerpiece of the guest experience at the Conservancy’s Nature Center, which highlights Southwest Florida’s diverse ecosystems.
“Thousands of visitors, including many school groups, have learned about the region’s ecosystem and environment by touring the Discovery Center, and I’m pleased to support the comprehensive renovations and expansion that will further educate and engage Conservancy members and guests.”
In 2020, when the Conservancy announced that the Dalton Discovery Center would be renovated and expanded, Sue committed the lead gift towards the $5 million project, which reopened in late 2021.
“When we see challenges or needs, we are blessed to be able give back,” she said. “If we don’t protect what we have, we are going to lose it. We need more people to be involved. We must take action in order to make a difference.”
“If we don’t protect what we have, we are going to lose it.”
