WELCOME TO THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF MAGIC UNDER THE MANGROVES.
We are honored to welcome you to Magic Under the Mangroves 2024. This is the 20th Annual Magic Under the Mangroves, hosted by and supporting the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. This year marks an additional milestone as the Conservancy is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
Since its inception, Magic Under the Mangroves has raised more than $19 million to protect the land, water, wildlife and future of Southwest Florida.
Tonight, it’s all about preserving our paradise and protecting this area for many future generations to come.
The support you provide through this annual gala event, Magic Under the Mangroves, is key to providing operational support for conservation work in science research, environmental policy and advocacy, environmental education for all ages, and wildlife rehabilitation.
There is no time more important than now to support environmental conservation. Today, this region faces many challenges with unbridled growth, coastal sustainability, reduction of habitat for native species, and the list continues. Join us as we celebrate the work of the dedicated Conservancy staff members, interns and volunteers, along with the generous financial support from our community.
This is truly a monumental gathering. We are excited to have you and your respected party here tonight. Thank you to all who have made the previous 19 events so successful. Tonight, we stand on the shoulders of all those who had a vision to protect our special corner of the world.
Please enjoy your evening. We are proud to welcome the past, current and new supporters to this magical event. Your generosity will help us navigate and prepare for the multiple challenges ahead together.
WELCOME

The work of the Environmental Science Department includes ecological research and monitoring programs, restoration initiatives, and ongoing collaboration with universities, state and federal agencies, as well as community outreach.

Conservancy biologists specialize in a wide variety of research initiatives that focus on Southwest Florida’s unique habitats and wildlife, ranging from our estuaries to our uplands, urban environments, to the Western Everglades.
Today’s environmental initiatives undertaken by the Conservancy will also influence our quality of life for the next 20, 40, 60 years and beyond. It takes many gifts of time and talent to support this important work.

Coastal Ecology, Invasive Species, Western Everglades, Sea Turtle Protection and Mangrove Restoration are the focus areas of the department. We conduct research to enhance our understanding of the wildlife and the biological communities that are necessary to their survival.

POLICY
Providing medical care to injured wildlife has been a priority of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida since 1979. Caring citizens rescue herons, gopher tortoises, fawns, pelicans, and many other species of native animals and drop them off at the von Arx Wildlife Hospital for treatment.
The Conservancy works actively with decision-makers to ensure a bright future for many generations to come. Our Policy and Advocacy Department helps protect our wild lands, wildlife, and waters. We steward smart growth in our area by advising on transportation planning, land use decisions, and helping to preserve habitat and waterways.

The wildlife rehabilitation team and a group of dedicated volunteers provide supportive care with the goal of releasing as many “patients” as possible back to their natural habitats.
Keeping our region healthy, livable, and functional is an endless and complex task. It’s about balancing conservation with economic health and making sure decisions and actions are supported by science-based information and policies.

Over 4,200 injured, sick, and orphaned native animals are admitted to the von Arx Wildlife Hospital each year. Most of those injuries stem from interactions that involve humans — including car strikes, domestic pet attacks, window collisions, fishing line and hook injuries, gunshots, and toxicosis.

We are a proud sponsor of Magic Under the Mangroves and support the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in their tireless efforts to protect and preserve the natural beauty and integrity of our water, land, wildlife, and future. We are fortunate to share in this wondrous community we eagerly call our home.
DAVID ADDISON
David Addison started one of the longest-running sea turtle monitoring and conservation programs in the world today and has trained some of the world’s leading sea turtle researchers through the internship program. After being hired by Dr. Gary Schmelz as a naturalist, Mr. Addison worked for the Conservancy for 40 years and remains our longest-ever serving employee. While he retired in 2022, Mr. Addison still volunteers on the sea turtle project and participates in the majority of our all-staff events.
Dr. Gary Schmelz served as the original director of the Big Cypress Nature Center which merged with the Conservancy of Collier County in 1973. During this time, Dr. Schmelz started the internship program and wildlife rehabilitation efforts at the Conservancy. A life-long conservationist, Dr. Schmelz continues to educate Southwest Florida residents about our environment today.
Dr. Bernie Yokel was the first director of the Norris Research Marine Center in Rookery Bay and the driving force behind the 1976 Naples Bay Study promoting both pure and applied science to understand the issues impacting the Bay. He led the effort to defeat permits that sought to destroy 5,000 acres of mangrove wetlands near Marco Island. Dr. Yokel served in a milestone position, having been the first full-time science professional employed by the Conservancy.

PRESERVING OUR PARADISEPYTHON EXPERIENCE
Donated by the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and Snake Life Carvings
Journey with the world-famous Conservancy python team into the Western Everglades to advance this ground-breaking science to protect our native wildlife. The lucky winner will accompany Conservancy Scientist Ian Bartoszek and his team on a unique field experience to release a male “scout snake”. This once in a lifetime experience is a rare opportunity to not only join the team undercover in the field, but the winning bidder will be able to name the scout snake and learn of its movement and fate in the Western Everglades. In the ten-year history of the program, this opportunity to name a scout snake has only been offered to three individuals. The day will start with a briefing in the Andrew Family research lab at the Conservancy, and then you and a guest will prepare for a day out into the field and participate in the release of the snake so that it can be tracked to assist with removal of large breeding female pythons.
You will enjoy lunch out in the field, and upon your return the lucky winner will receive an equally unique gift – a hand carved, 8’ long wood carving of the scout snake just released – created as a detailed work courtesy of our friends at Snake Life Carvings. This memento is sure to be a conversation starter in your home and will remind you of your role in helping to address one of the most challenging invasive species in the world.
VALUE: Priceless
*NOTE: Carving is worth $4,500
Restrictions: Date and time to be mutually agreed upon.

YOUR CHANCE TO HELP US PRESERVE PARADISE
This year’s Live Fund-A-Need program is all about preserving the paradise we all call home. You will have the opportunity to raise your paddle and fund programs at the Conservancy that we depend on every day to preserve Southwest Florida.
All contributions are 100% tax deductible, so bid high and feel free to bid often. Your support will enable underserved kids to attend summer camp, it will allow us to fight for clean water in our estuaries, it will help us advance science-based strategies to promote resiliency of our community and so much more.
You love living in Paradise – help us protect it through this Live Fund-a-Need portion of our magical evening!
