One of the most attractive features of bilingual programs from a learning perspective is the increased exposure to the second language they provide. Often overlooked, however, is the research evidence demonstrating that, for contentbased programs to be effective, they need to systematically integrate a focus on language through an integrated approach that encourages shifts in learners’ attention between language and content.

This talk will illustrate various ways that teachers can scaffold language development during contentbased instruction. A proactive approach will first be presented as a planned instructional sequence that is contextualized in subject-matter content in ways that help students to develop their metalinguistic awareness while also engaging in meaningful use of the target language. A reactive approach consisting of corrective feedback and effective questioning techniques will then be presented as a means for teachers to structure classroom discourse in ways that make oral interaction a key source of learning.
