to the 2024 45th Annual Towaw Bull Sale
The Greek philosopher Heraclitus is credited with the idea that the only constant is change. We certainly have had some changes around here as our longtime Sale partners, Rainbow Red Angus, dispersed their herd last December and have retired from the Seedstock Business. The Bablitz family had a tremendous sale with their genetics highly sought after across North America. That is a testament to their hard work and the genetics that both of our outfits have made available for our customers over the years. Another change is our family and the paths they are taking as Dave and Gail slide into retirement and Thomas is away at his broadcasting job in Lloydminster. Reese and Ryder will both be off to College next Fall so Jill and I are going to have to get used to quite a bit less labour around here. The thing that hasn’t changed is the fact that, even though the sale will have less bulls, our commitment to supplying the best maternal Angus genetics is still our #1 priority. We will be celebrating 50 years this summer at the ranch south of Sangudo. We have been selling bulls here the entire time, probably 75% of the bulls within a 60 mile radius. We appreciate the support from our friends and neighbours and thank you all for welcoming our family into the area so long ago. I was visiting with a prominent order buyer the other day and asked him why certain groups of calves sell for more than others at the auction mart? He talked about hair and bone and frame but it also came down to large, consistent groups of calves that are the same size, type and kind. He knows where he can place calves, and pay more for them, if he knows what they are going to do in the feedlot. One way to do that is to source your genetics from suppliers that have a consistent, predictable product.
We feel we have a program that has consistently tried to stick to one type and breed, and line breed our cattle with that thought in mind. We use a lot of our own bulls; if we won’t use them why would we expect our customers to? Another way to have that consistent, profitable set of calves is to tighten your calving period and get more calves born in the first cycle. We feel by not overfeeding our bulls to achieve inflated weaning and yearling weights, and giving them plenty of exercise, they are ready to breed more cows as soon as they are put in the breeding field. We have written up a few paragraphs that will be scattered about the catalog that go more in depth on our breeding philosophies.
This year we will be working with the good folks from Optimal Bovines Inc., OBI, as sale consultants for our sale. We have known and been friends with Mark Holowaychuk and his family for over 40 years and are excited to work with him and his crew this year. Robert Lind will once again be our Auctioneer; you won’t find many ranchers and farmers in this area that Robert doesn’t know. Dory Gerard will be here taking bids as well as having our good friend Bryon Wolters back in his familiar spot as Ringman at Towaw. Mark Shologan and the DLMS crew will be here broadcasting the sale online and the details to sign up for that platform will be posted later in the catalog. Videos of the Sale Bulls will be available for viewing at Cattlevids.ca a couple of weeks before the sale, and we encourage everyone to check them out. We are always available to show you the bulls at the farm, or we can go through the bulls with customers beforehand. We have a sight unseen program where we can either bid on bulls on your behalf or use any of our capable sales staff. Our number 1 goal is to get the right bulls into the right situations. The bulls will all be semen tested before the sale and the bulls must all pass before going in the sale. We don’t sell deferred bulls and we cull them pretty hard, so subsequently we deal with very few sale credits in the sale. We know cows don’t get bred by credits and “sorries” so we do our level best to mitigate potential problems before they leave Towaw. Having said this, things do happen, and we keep spare bulls if problems arise. Please let us know of problems while we can fix them; we know we can help you better than the guys at the coffee shop! Please come early on Sale Day, have lunch with us, and plan to stay after the sale for hospitality and a good visit. • Buy 3 - 4 bulls - 5% discount on each bull • Buy 5 or more bulls - 7.5% discount on each bull
DELIVERY & BOARD
We will deliver bulls free of charge within 200km of the sale site. Delivery will be at cost after 200km. A rebate of $100.00 per bull will be offered to buyers who bring their trailer and truck their bulls home themselves within one week of sale day. Bulls may be kept at Towaw, free of charge, until April 15, 2024. If bulls are left longer a fee of $4.00 per day will be charged. Bulls are left entirely at the risk of the purchaser and we recommend that insurance be taken.
RETAINED INTERESTS
We are selling some bulls in this sale as 2/3 interest and full possession. The 2/3 interest part means that the seller wishes to retain a 1/3 interest in the bull entitling him to use the bull through artificial insemination and sharing in any future drawing expenses and revenue of semen on a 1/3 basis. Full possession entitles the new owner to all physical rights to the bull. As in any other information, announcements from the block take precedence over any written information in the catalog.

ABBREVIATIONS
AOD: The actual age of the dam when she calved the bull offered for sale. CE: Calving Ease, U =Unassisted BW: Actual weight at birth WW: Weaning weight in lbs. Adjusted to 205 days. WI: Weaning Index - Weaning weight as a % of average WW of contemporaries. YW: Yearling weight in lbs. - calculated as adjusted 205 day weight + (ADG on feed x 165 days) YI: Yearling Index - Weight gain from Weaning to Yearling as a % of average gain of contemporaries. NOTE: All Indexes are calculated within herds, as management may differ somewhat.
EPDS: EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES
EPDs are a powerful tool that is available for making genetic progress. EPDs incorporate the performance of the individual, along with the performance of all its relatives. CE: Calving ease - the higher number predicts more calving ease. BW: Birth. A lower EPD predicts lower birthweights. WW: Weaning. High weaning EPDs predict higher weaning weights.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
TERMS: Unless otherwise previously arranged with Towaw Cattle Co., terms of this sale are cash or cheque, payable in Canadian funds. As soon as an animal is sold it becomes the responsibility of the purchaser. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Errors in the catalogue will be corrected by announcements from the stand at sale time, and such corrections will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. DISPUTES: In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer by the seller for each REGISTERED animal after settlement has been made. DELIVERY: We will arrange delivery of the bulls to central points in western Canada and closest U.S. Port of Entry. Delivery within 200km is free of charge, outside of 200km will be at cost.
YW: Yearling. Higher yearling EPDs indicate greater expected yearling weights. MILK: Milk EPD should be used to predict the milking ability of the daughters of the bulls in question. Higher milk EPDs project more milk. REA: Rib Eye Area in sq. in. Describes difference in rib eye size. MARB: Marbling. Describes marbling potential of calves expressed as difference in grade score. FAT: Fat thickness in inches. Predicts difference in fat measured at the 12th rib. CW: Carcass weight in lbs. Predicts differences in hot carcass weight of progeny. Percentile Tables have been added to take some of the confusion out of the EPDs. A trait listed as 5% would mean that bull is in the top 5% of the breed for that trait. 49% would be slightly higher than breed average, while 51% would be slightly lower than breed average.

Towaw Cattle Co. guarantees to sell you a bull that is structurally sound, and a bull that has passed a semen test conducted by a licensed veterinarian. In short, we guarantee to provide you with a sound breeding bull. If he hasn’t passed a semen test, he doesn’t sell. Should any animal fail to be a satisfactory breeder, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value. Should this not be possible, an adjustment will be made to reflect the bull in question, as a credit towards the purchase of another bull. In no case shall credit exceed the purchase price of the bull. We however, will not provide replacement or adjustment for physical injury or mismanagement. Bearing this in mind, we stress the importance of insurance on your bulls. Should you have a problem with your bull, please call us right away, and we will work with you to make sure you are satisfied with your bull.

We were able to purchase Warrior as a 3 year old from Brett and Traci’s Wildman Livestock herd. Kirk had been following him since he was a yearling and once he saw yearling progeny over there, we made a deal to get him bought. His dam was the CAA 2016 Show Female of the Year and traces back to the same Stocky 82K cow that is the dam of Smoke Signal. Add in the excellent footed Jensen Sky bull and this herdsire is one that excels at a lot of the traits we require at Towaw. Look for the Warrior cattle to be easy fleshing, early maturing, muscular and maternal. These terms might get repetitive; it is what we have been stressing for 50 years and will continue to pursue in the future. We are not a big box store; we just want to produce our kind of cattle that produce profit oriented genetics for our customers.

Smoke Signal came to Towaw as a mature bull after we had seen him at Brett and Traci’s Wildman Livestock herd. His dam was a past Agribition Champion Female and lived into her 20s. His sire, Redman 1T, was also the sire of our Lazy MC Kingman bull so we knew he would add fleshing ability. He calved really well and leaves quality females and bulls.

Tornado is a long bodied, deep red coloured bull that we purchased a ½ interest in from Duralta Farms as a three year old. He sired the high selling bulls for a number of years for both Duralta and Towaw. His daughters are milky, feminine and good footed. His sons have the herdbull look, are long bodied and powerful, and should add performance and maternal quality to our customers calf crops.

We put on a lot of miles every spring looking at herdsire prospects to add to our herd. Basically we look to add new genetics to further produce our type without jeopardising our cow herd. In 2021 that bull was Granite 74H from the famed SSS Red Angus program. The bad news was our pockets weren’t quite deep enough at the sale; he sold for $65,000. The good news was we were able to procure a 50 straw semen package. He has made a big impact with very high quality females and bulls. We have sold 3 heifer calves at the last two Red Roundup sales at an average of $10,000. Look for his sons to be eye appealing, stout muscled and good footed.

We bought Kingman 465F, a bull we nicknamed Selkirk, from Hamco Cattle Co. as their leadoff two year old in their 2021 Sale. He is a larger framed version of the Kingman line; still easy fleshing, big nutted, and deep. He is sired by a bull that Hamco bought in our sale that Kirk gave a perfect foot score to, a feat only achieved once since we have been scoring bulls feet.

We purchased Working Class as a long yearling from Anchor 1 at Mayerthorpe after observing him at the tail end of his first breeding season. He was an $18000 purchase earlier that spring from the U2 program. He has bred for both of us in two breeding seasons and always maintained his fleshiness. He is a consistent low birth, easy calving sire that sires early maturing growth and moderate mature size. His dam has also become a donor cow at U2 as well so the maternal end is top shelf as well.

First Mcgregor son to sell and he shares his sire’s extra length and performance. He is dark red and good footed. McGregor 601J had quite a run on the show road last fall being named Champion Bull at Olds Fall Classic and Reserve Champion Red Angus Bull at Lloydminster Stockade. Who is Jan Bonsma?
We often reference Jan Bonsma and Bonsma principles when talking about our cattle and our breeding philosophies.
Jan Bonsma was a South African animal scientist that spent decades developing and studying beef cattle. He developed the Bonsmara breed and wrote the book, Man must Measure, to let the cattle world in on his principles for breeding cattle. In the 60s and 70s he spent countless days putting on seminars around the world. When Dad started breeding Red Angus Cattle in the early 70s, one of the can’t miss events was the Beckton Stock Farm Cattlemen's Seminar and Sale every fall in Sheridan, Wyoming. Jan Bonsma was speaking at these events and Dad and his fellow breeders, new to the purebred cattle industry, took it all in. Fast forward about 30 years and Kirk went to a

short course in Lloydminster put on by Gearld Fry, a student of Bonsma. He taught the Linear Measurement program of physically measuring cattle and comparing hip length/heart girth/topline length and the relationships of those measurements. Kirk came home and eagerly went to measuring some cattle and quickly found that all of our best cows measured really well on this system. The lightbulb went on that Dad had been teaching us Bonsma principles for years and we just didn’t know it. For cattle to be functionally efficient, bulls need to look like bulls and be full of testosterone. As well females need to look like females and be full of estrogen. If the cattle are hormonally balanced, structurally correct, and fertile, everything else falls into place. Why do we cull? First and foremost, we take the responsibility of being a seedstock and genetics provider very seriously. The decisions we make, and the policies and tendencies we use to make breeding decisions have an exponential impact on our customer’s bottom line. In a commercial setting a cow must have a marketable calf every year, all while doing it without incurring extra labour, feed, or health costs. The difference between a top end cow and an average cow might be an extra $100 in profit at the end of the year.

and yearling time is exponentially rewarded in a purebred setting. Same goes with extra feed to prop up a cows milking ability or her ability to breed back. Keeping an open cow around for an extra year is ludicrous to a commercial herd but often happens in a purebred setting if that cow has cranked out a $20,000 bull. So, even though cattle that need to be culled might not affect our bottom line as much as it does a commercial breeder, we must cull our cattle ruthlessly to avoid passing on future economic problems to our customers. We sell a lower percentage of bulls born here than a lot of outfits, not because of the quality of the cowherd but because we refuse to make
any excuses for the cattle or prop them up with uneconomic feed and practices. We do our best with the young cattle but every year there are some that hit the cowherd and then need to be culled. We go through our cows every spring and a group ends up being bred to terminal bulls and culled from the purebred herd. Those male calves, while still purebreds, on those cows are all castrated, no matter how good they might look. The heifers are also marketed as commercial. We also believe in our customers taking advantage of hybrid vigor when they use our purebred, registered bulls on their crossbred cows. You won’t see half blood bulls sold from our program.

With simple traits like the polled gene or colour genes, there is only a pair of genes involved so it is quite simple to be homozygous for a gene and therefore be guaranteed of passing that gene to their offspring. For complex traits like correct feet, udders, body condition etc., many genes are involved and things get complicated. Larger framed bull with larger testicle size. His Renee cow family traces back to a bred heifer purchased from Brylor Ranch in 1984 by Kirk. Her first daughter, 7T, was the same age as a group of 6 year old cows that Dad had offered to That’ll Do Ranch. Elvin Kopp said there was no deal unless she was included. Kirk did not want to let 7T go, but after a couple of weeks at Olds College decided he was going to need that $2500 more than he needed 7T. Those cows did a great job for That’ll Do and then sold as part of a package, at 11 years old, to form the nucleus of U2 ranch.

Now we can DNA test suspected animals and have pretty much eliminated known genetic defects from the registered gene pool, as most of the Associations now flag defect carriers in pedigrees and make testing readily available. On a side note that is another darn good reason to use registered bulls! We are using more of our own bulls and utilizing line breeding as a tool to make our genetics more prepotent and predictable. We are not into producing Outliers and Unicorns here, but predictable genetics that are more likely to pass on to their calves and make your calf crop more uniform and your replacement heifers more likely to last for many years in your cowherds.
