28th Annual Bull Sale understanding epd’S

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are the most reliable predictor of an animal’s genetic merit, and the most powerful tool that is available for making genetic progress. An EPD predicts the difference in performance of future offspring of a parent, as compared to progeny from other parents, when each are bred to mates of equal value.

The observed performance of an animal is determined by both genetics and environment, so EPDs only predict differences due to genes passed on from parent to offspring and actual performance will vary based on the individual animal’s specific genes and environmental factors.

By comparing an animal’s EPD for a given trait to the average EPD of all animals in the breed, you can determine if the animal is above or below average and whether they will add desirable traits to your herd.

For Gestation Length and Birthweight, a lower number is more desirable indicating a shorter gestation/ lower birth weight. For all other traits a higher number is more desirable.

New this year, we have included a Docility EPD for all bulls. Docility has proven to be a highly inheritable trait, so a bull with a high docility number can quickly make a difference in the temperament of your herd.

Ozzy has a big chest floor, with neck extension and very natural bone to go along with a thick hair coat. This future herd sire has good growth and style to burn. Ozzy is out of a first calf Revolver daughter who did a great job. In my mind this is the right kind of bull.

Here is an excellent herdsire prospect for the cattlemen that are serious about making money. We showed this homozygous polled bull calf at the Olds Fall Classic placing second and at Farmfair International placing third. We really enjoyed working with this quiet tempered bull.
