Connors State College Division of Agriculture

Connors State College, home of the Cowboys, is located at the intersection of I-40 and HWY 64, in Warner. The eastern Oklahoma college’s agriculture program is diverse, offering 11 options.

EARN AN ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE IN AGRICULTURE, WITH EMPHASIS IN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS:

Students majoring in general agriculture are exposed to a broad spectrum of the industry. The diverseness within agriculture provides many avenues for career paths. This option explores introductory coursework, the foundation for many of the agriculture sciences and related fields.

Students taking introductory AGED classes will experience seamless transfer to most universities. Connors currently has more than 60 alumni working as successful Ag Education instructors in the State of Oklahoma.

The agriculture economics/agribusiness option exposes students to agriculture and environmental economics. Students are introduced to production, marketing, managing, accounting and consumption of agricultural products as they explore

the role and structure of agriculture in the world economy. This degree option prepares students for an advanced degree, as well as other related fields in the agribusiness complex.

Students receive hands-on learning in the fundamentals of agricultural communication methods, including journalism, advertising, broadcasting and photography.

Students will learn leadership skills as they

pertain to the ag industry and career fields, learning their own unique vision, values and personal strengths including public relations, agriculture management, promotions or sales, etc.

More than 1600 acres at Connors is used for the production of domestic livestock, providing a unique opportunity for student learning. The college boasts three cattle herds, a sheep farm and a swine herd. A bull research facility yearly houses over 200 bulls on test, which are auctioned in a campus sale facility complete with a classroom, concession, rest rooms and sale ring.

The farm includes barns for both sheep and swine, and cattle working facilities. Majoring in animal science exposes students to an unlimited amount of information, resources and hands-on learning in a laboratory and natural setting. Students are introduced to breeding, management and parasitology, feed management, sire and dam selection and a wide variety of topics impacting the industry.

Course topics also include using tools for selection and evaluation of all species.

The Equine Science option prepares students for professional positions within the horse industry. Students acquire hands-on experience during daily riding and training classes. This program also includes theory courses focused on anatomy, breeding, management, advertising and marketing.

Students in the horticulture program experience hands-on learning in a wide variety of introductory horticulture subjects including plant propagation, greenhouse management, commercial plant production, residential landscape design and management, turf grass management, floral design, woody plant and herbaceous plant identification, horticulture sales management, promotions and interior scaping. Students

within walking distance from classrooms and dorms! Facilities include spacious aisles and tack rooms, two barns with a total of 50 stalls/ runs, a 100 x 250 ft. indoor arena, a 150 x 300 ft. outdoor arena, 60 and 100 ft. round pens.

Graduates of the equine science option are prepared to be employed as assistant trainers, breeders or managers, or continue their education at a university.

Opportunities exist to develop skills in sales, advertising and management. Facilities include two 36 x 50 ft. teaching greenhouses and a horticulture lab classroom. Students have opportunities with internships and skill-based learning.

Connors State College has more than 1600 acres of college farm and ranch land. The Gary Harding Research Ranch lies south of Warner and consists of lakes, wetlands, prairie, wildlife habitat and meadows. Students experience learning in a natural setting.

Classes include discussions on water quality, ecosystems, soil and management, plant identification, habitat management and development, species of plants and wildlife native to Oklahoma, livestock and its impact in the environment.

The pre-veterinary medicine option is designed to prepare students who seek to be admitted to a university vet-med program.

This is a preparatory program that requires students to complete course work they will use to continue on to a four- year college.

The Purebred Ranch Operations program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the seedstock segment of the beef industry.

This program is geared for students who are focused on making a mark in the purebred cattle business. You will acquire a great understanding of the production practices

The Wildlife Ecology & Management option will provide students with an understanding of the ecological principles and management practices that influence the health and persistence of wildlife populations. Conservation of native species, game management and control of invasive species will be explored. Students within

The CSC Show Team is an integral part of the Purebred Ranch Operation program and promotion of the CSC beef herd. CSC has exhibited both national and international champions during the last few years at major stock shows across the country. The team consists of students interested in the

exhibition and management of show cattle.

These students are involved in daily care, feeding, show preparation and at show tasks.

Connors will exhibit cattle at 4-5 shows per year across the United States, including at least one national show both in the fall and spring semester. CSC offers scholarships for qualified show team members.

The Connors State College Livestock Judging Team utilizes expert instruction to provide students the opportunity for success in livestock competitions. The program also builds team members into true evaluators of all livestock. Team members are recruited from all over the nation to become a part

of Connors' long-standing legacy. Teams from CSC compete at numerous regional and national contests, such as The National Western in Denver, The American Royal in Kansas City, and the Houston Livestock Show.

Students typically transfer to a university with the opportunity to compete at the next level.

The Connors State Rodeo Team is a part of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.

Students can compete in ten college rodeos in the NIRA central plains region, held throughout the year in Oklahoma and Kansas, and can qualify for the NIRA national finals.

The CSC Rodeo Teams strives for excellence

in the arena, in addition to the classroom.

Practices are held daily to refine skills needed to perform at events. CSC offers scholarship packages according to collegiate level competitiveness, indoor and outdoor arenas, on-campus horse stalls as well as available practice stock for team members.

Shotgun Shooting Sports team members compete in American Trap and Skeet. Students travel and compete in Tucson, AZ; San Antonio, TX; Savanna, GA; Grand Island, NE; Fort Benning, GA; the Central Midwest Contest,

and at the ACUI Collegiate Championships.

The college recently constructed a trap and skeet range open to students through the CSC Shotgun Shooting Sports Club, or to students on the competitive shooting sports team.

The Aggie Club is a group of students dedicated to socialization, recreation and education. This group participates in educational and social activities and fundraising events. Student experience is a priority at Connors State and Aggie Club members will have a hand in creating fun and positive engagements on and off campus. This group is responsible for the enhancement of the image of the Division of Agriculture at CSC.

Aggie Club members serve the agricultural and natural resource industries of Oklahoma in several capacities. This includes hosting functions to educate students about the career and educational opportunities within the industry and speaking to prospective students on campus. Members gain experience through service learning activities at the college, within the community and state.

The Division of Agriculture offers a unique opportunity to an elite group of students through its Agriculture Ambassadors Program.

The focus of the program is to encourage and promote the development of personal growth, principled leadership and career preparation by representing the Division in recruitment, collegiate and community events. These events include, but are not limited to: Junior Aggie Day, Aggie Day, Fall and Spring Bull

Sale, state, county and local fairs/livestock shows, recruitment events and Oklahoma FFA Convention.

Agriculture Ambassadors serve for one-semester, and may be reappointed to serve in succeeding semesters. To be eligible to apply for a position, the applicant must be a full-time student pursuing an agriculture major, have earned 12 hours in residence and have and maintain a 3.25 GPA.

Established in 2013, the CSC chapter of Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow is the first of its kind to be established on a junior college campus. Affiliated with the national organization, ACT is devoted to strengthening agricultural communication students through personal growth,

networking, and educational opportunities.

Agricultural communications students can exclusively utilize a computer lab containing Adobe creative software, and have access to the latest cameras and equipment.

Students in this discipline learn graphic design, photography and journalism.

The Shotgun Shooting Sports Club is one of the most active clubs on campus, hosting weekly 5-stand or trap and skeet shoots open to all club members and guests. The club includes students, faculty and staff, and is very active in fundraising and FFA/4H shooting

events.

Participants in the club have an opportunity to learn six separate shooting sports, including: International Skeet and Trap, American Skeet and Trap, Five-Stand, and Sporting Clays.

Nationwide, more than half of all first time freshmen attend community or two-year colleges.

Students who graduate with an associate degree are more likely to earn a four-year degree.

The CSC Horticulture Department hosts an annual plant sale for college and community members!
