Connors State Agriculture Division Hosts Fall on the Farm for Local Students On Tuesday, October 15, Connors State College welcomed more than 700 elementary students to the Warner campus for the Inaugural Fall on the Farm. Students from Mounds, Oktaha, Checotah, Warner, and Eufaula flooded the outdoor and indoor arena for a day full of fun and education. Students had the opportunity to visit 26 different stations, indoor and outdoor, for education, crafts, and activities.

Students had the chance to visit with the college students via group leader or station leader, learning from students from the agriculture

division. Along with the members of the agriculture division at CSC, students from six FFA chapters came to the campus to help with the day.

Heading the project and day was Ms. Debby Golden, chair of the division of agriculture.

“Our society, through the years, has grown farther and farther away from the farm,” said Golden. “I was thinking of an event to get students on campus involved and have fun with elementary students around the community.”

Golden started planning for this

event before school started.

Golden said she wanted to create an event that had rotations with activities for elementary students with a purpose of sparking an interest. She spoke with several individuals to have groups come in to educate students, ranging the Oklahoma Soybean Association to Warner FFA. More than 100 CSC Faculty and Staff helped put this day together. Division Chairs and professors from all divisions played a part to make this day successful.

Sports, and Show teams volunteered their time to spend the day with elementary students.

“Fall on the Farm was a great idea,” said Angel Morales, SGA President and Shooting Sports team member. “There is nothing like seeing the excitement in a young child’s eyes when they get to learn about something cool, and do something hands on.”

Students had the opportunity to listen to stories around a campfire, go to a pumpkin patch, rope a dummy, play corn hole, visit a

petting zoo, learn about horse care, milk goats, color, learn about soy beans, and make leaf crafts - just to name a few!

Morales talked about how the idea that college students are the leaders of tomorrow, and have an opportunity to help shape a younger generation, is what makes the biggest impact on his life.

Another student, Taylynn Williamson, CSC Sophomore and Ag Ambassador, said seeing the joy on the student’s faces is worth all the months of preparation.

“Not everyone grows up knowing agriculture the way we do,” said Williamson. “This is where we start in teaching today’s future.”

Williamson is from Florida and is actively involved in the agricultural division.

“The support and work done by our teams, staff, faculty and community to make this event possible was incredible,” said Williamson.

The date for the next Fall on the Farm is set for October 13, 2020.

CSC Host Fall Festival in Muskogee The Connors State students, faculty and staff look forward to the CSC annual Fall Festival every year.

Community members of Muskogee and surrounding areas, as well as CSC students and employees were all invited to bring their families to the Muskogee-Three Rivers

Port Campus for an evening full of games, activities, trunk-or-treating, free snacks, and a whole lot of fun.

On Monday, October 28, the annual festival was held - each club, group and on-campus organization were asked to bring a game, activity or trunk full of candy to be passed

COMMUNITY out to around 100 trunk-or-treaters and their families.

Some of the games included corn hole and Jenga just to name a few. Popcorn and apple cider were provided for each guest. The trunkor-treaters and their families left cheerful and with a bag full of treats.

Connors State Student Claims World Champion Showmanship Title The World Champion Showmanship (cattle) recently held in Shawnee, Oklahoma was a roaring success in every way it could be measured. 105 kids from eight states showed for over $20,000 in prize money. All the entry money plus $10,000 added was in the premium.

The overall showmanship winner, Sarah Armitage of Jacktown, Okla., won a trophy saddle valued at more than $2,500, and sponsored by Ford trucks and Clay Family Trust.

All participants showed in all three shows. One fourth of the prize money was in the first two rounds.

The final round the kids showed for

one half of the prize money equal to $10,300.

Below find the placings by rounds as follows and note, Division 5, which was high school seniors and college freshman was a prime example of the National scope and quality of competition: First place, Maddie Rohr from Elbert, Colorado – Second place, Colby Gilpen from Faxon, Oklahoma – Third place, Sarah Armitage from Jacktown, Oklahoma – Fourth place, Ross Wingert from Rosebud, Arkansas – Fifth place, Kaitlyn Withers from Coweta, Oklahoma – Sixth Place, Tristen Walling from Lakeland, Florida – Seventh Place, Sarge Ward

from Laramie, Wyoming. The first seven placing were from 5 different states. Eighth, ninth and tenth in order were Braelyn Berlowitz, college freshman, high school seniors Terah Garcia and Macy Curry, all from Oklahoma.

Seven different states, multiple rounds. In attendance was CSC President, Dr. Ron Ramming, who upkept the arena to ensure students all had equal opportunity to show their livestock.

Champion showman, Sarah Armitage, is a freshman at Connors State majoring in Agricultural Communications. Armitage is also a member of the Show Team.

CSC Recruitment Hosts Counselor Round Up Connors State Recruitment welcomed more than 40 area high school counselors and advisors to the Nursing Auditorium on the CSC Port Campus in Muskogee for Counselor Round Up. The event began with breakfast and an introduction from CSC President, Dr. Ramming.

This year’s counselors heard from John Norwood, CSC Registrar, who discussed the benefits and guidelines of concurrent enrollment, a program that gives high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take college level courses and start early on their college education. Karla James, Indian

Capital Technology Center’s Adult Health Careers Advisor/Recruiter discussed the partnership between CSC and ICTC Muskogee in the Allied Health field. Fabiela Kemble, CSC Simulation Lab Coordinator and adjunct instructor, presented the counselors with a presentation about the Nursing Program that CSC has to offer, followed with a tour of the Simulation Lab. The speakers and presenters all focused on different areas of the college process to inform the counselors who can, in turn, relay the information to their students.

During the event, Connors State awarded more than 40 scholarships

to the high school counselors for them to award to a deserving student at their local school.

“Counselor Round-Up is an event that allows us the opportunity to talk with the area counselors all together and share information about the different programs that Connors has to offer and answer in any questions they may have to assist their students in starting their college career,” said Chandler Young, Assistant Director of Recruitment. “It gives us the opportunity to build relationships and open lines of communication with the counselors in order to better reach their students.”

CSC Nursing Ranked #8 State Wide/ Health Fair Hosted Connors State College was recently recognized as the #8 ranked nursing program in Oklahoma.

“Nursing Programs were assessed on several factors which represent how well a program supports students towards licensure and beyond. We analyzed past and present first time NCLEX-RX “passrates” – weighted by year” says Sally Worthington, from registered nursing.org.

Three Rivers Port campus. Its traditional A.N.D. program utilizes a tried-and-true curriculum that prepares students for NCLEX exam success as well as gainful employment in the medical field. Modern technology and partnerships with community facilities make the CSC nursing department stand out from the rest.

The NCLEX-RN is used by all state boards of nursing across the United States to help assess a students competency and is required for licensure. Also, many state boards of nursing use the total overall NCLEX-RN pass rates for a school as one of the main

ways to approve a schools ability to provide a nursing education in the state, says registerednursing.org.

Along with being ranked state wide, CSC, along with the NASNTI team, also hosted a health fair for the students on campus. They gave free health screenings for BMI, weight, blood pressure, O2 levels, risk of diabetes and hypertension which was performed by Connors nursing students. After the screening was done, all participants received goody bag and healthy snacks. The health screening fair helps current nursing students practice their skills and get more experience.

What started at a church six years ago, the Connors State Cowboys baseball players have now made it a tradition for Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas Child is a project with a mission to provide international relief sending shoeboxes filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies for children all over the world. The boxes are sent to children outside the U.S. affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, and disease to children living on Native American reservations in the U.S. “I’d seen it

done at church and people were starting it at multiple other churches so I thought our boys could try it,” said head coach, Perry Keith. “I was shocked to see when we got started and the team showed up, we had more stuff than we could get in the boxes. It takes you back to see that (and) it makes me proud.”

Earlier in the month the team scheduled a work day to fill the boxes they are scheduled to go out the week of the 15th. Operation Christmas Child does the shipping and delivering across the country,

although where the boxes go is unknown to the team.

The players are responsible for brining items to put in the shoeboxes. “I had players that really didn’t have that much for themselves going out and getting stuff to fill the boxes,” Keith stated.

“It was really up lifting.” The boys also took a team picture with ‘Merry Christmas from Connors’ and each of them were able to sign it. “It turned out to be a neat deal,” said Keith.

Brenda Smith, Faculty

Coming to us from Tahlequah, Okla., is Brenda Smith. Smith is an alumna of Connors State College associates in nursing degree and takes great pride in becoming faculty. Smith graduated from Bacone College with a bachelor’s of science nursing, and a master’s of science from the University of Oklahoma. Smith is currently a professor in the nursing program at Connors State. She teaches 4th semester, 1st semester, and Transitions in Nursing. Smith said she knew she wanted to work at CSC since she was a student here.

“I was inspired by my former nursing instructors,” said Smith.

“June Cope, Glenda Shockley, and Charlotte Vaughn made a large impact in my career.”

Smith said choosing to attend CSC was the absolute best choice for her as the state board nursing pass rate was higher than any other college in

Garrett Slagell, Student Garrett Slagell comes to Connors State College from Hydro, Okla.

Slagell was recruited to CSC for the Shooting Sports Team and awarded a scholarship to attend school.

Slagell had dreams of becoming a fireman when he grew up. Slagell graduated from Hydro-Eakly in 2019, where he was involved in FFA and Student Council. Upon graduation, Slagell made the move across the state to Warner, where he is currently majoring in Agricultural Economics, and he would like to become a loan officer.

“I had never been to the Connors campus before the day I moved in,” said Slagell. “Once I stepped foot on campus, I immediately knew this was the place I was supposed to be.”

Slagell said that Connors State has had a positive impact on his life.

“I have met lifelong friends from Connors,” said Slagell. “I know the friends I have made at Connors will be a part of my life forever.”

Upon graduation from

Connors, Slagell plans to attend Oklahoma State University, where he will continue his education in Agricultural Economics. He would like to obtain his masters in Agricultural Economics, once graduating with his bachelors.

Slagell plans to be the first in his immediate family to graduate college. He takes great pride in this accomplishment. Slagell was recently awarded the title of National Champion. Slagell won the specialty crop proficiency area at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. Slagell owns a herd of 12 registered Maine-Anjou females. Slagell comes from a farming operation, where in the summers, he helps maintain his family’s sweet potato, watermelon, wheat, and corn crops. Slagell won supreme champion commercial heifer in 2019 at the Oklahoma Youth Expo.

“You are never too important to be nice to people.”

“From the nursing program, I was taught to work hard for what I wanted which was to be an RN,” said Smith. “That work ethic has followed me throughout my life.”

Smith said she enjoys mentoring students to assist them in achieving their goals in nursing. She said she thinks CSC is a good place for students due to the fact it is a small college that truly cares about its students and their success. Smith said in the nursing department, the faculty knows most of their students by name.

Smith has been employed with CSC since 2008, and loves working at the school. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren. Smith also said she loves the water and enjoys being at the lake or on a beach any chance she gets.

Doni Archer-Hinton, Alumni Ms. Doni Kaye Archer-Hinton was raised in the small town of Hitchita, Okla. Archer-Hinton currently resides in Supulpa, Okla., where she is back in the classroom teaching the youth of Oklahoma. ArcherHinton graduated from Connors State College in 1980, with a degree in education. She continued her education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, where she graduated with her bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

Archer-Hinton then pursued two master’s degrees- one in elementary education and one in administration. She retired from teaching in 2015, and couldn’t stay away. She is currently a teacher at Allen Bowden in Tulsa, Okla., teaching special education and Indian education.

“Connors is a family tradition,” said Archer-Hinton.

Archer-Hinton is not the first of her family to graduate from Connors. She comes from a family

of Connors alumni. Both of her parents, two of her brothers, her twin sister, and other relatives all attended and graduated school from CSC. Chances are, if you attended school at CSC in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, or 80’s, you attended school with one of Archer-Hinton’s family members.

Archer-Hinton said she gained lifelong friends at CSC. “My dad was a coach,” said ArcherHinton. “I remember attending my first game at CSC at just 3-years-old.”

Archer-Hinton’s father coached one All American from Connors State.

Archer-Hinton said CSC is a good place for students because of the smallness and everyone knows who you are.

“You’re not just a number at Connors,” said Archer-Hinton.

“There is a great opportunity for an individualized setting and help students learn.” She said she thanks God for the life she has. He has brought her through tough times

in life, and she feels it is her duty to be a positive light in other people’s lives.

John Norwood, Staff John Lewis Norwood II is a new face to campus, but not new to the area. Norwood is from Checotah, Okla., and is the registrar at Connors State College. Norwood graduated from Bacone College in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in science in exercise science, and a master’s from East Central University in 2012 in education. Norwood said he chose to work at Connors State College because he realizes the value and service the Connors State College provides to this area.

“I know, and have known, many individuals that have worked at Connors State College over its illustrious history as an institution and I have wanted to be a part of the mission and goals that this school represents” said Norwood.

“I have a strong desire to positively serve Connors State College and our student population, as well as our regional area, in any and all capacities that I can.”

Norwood has been an employee at Connors State College for 3 months and says he has found the student population to be warm and inviting.

“I myself am not an alum of CSC, however, my mom, dad, sister, niece, extended family, and numerous friends are,” said Norwood. “Through each of the individuals I have come to realize the importance of higher education, and in particular the access to higher education that is provided to rural areas.”

Norwood said he thinks Connors is a good place for students because CSC provides valuable college experiences and pathways ranging from university life to the workforce, all while being located in a nurturing community.

In his spare time, Norwood enjoys reading and writing poetry, and exercising. Norwood was a collegiate baseball player at Bacone.

EDUCATION Meet Oklahoma A&M Regent, Blayne Arthur Mrs. Blayne Arthur is one of the newest appointed Regent to the Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents.

Arthur is in a unique position. She was appointed at the first female Secretary of Agriculture from Governor Stitt. Arthur is a proud wife to Jerrod, and mother to Kelton, 11, and Kennedy, 7. As mentioned, Arthur is currently serving our state as the Secretary of Agriculture.

Her responsibilities include being the agency head for the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry. Arthur said there have been several individuals who have had a great influence in her career.

“I believe that any professional needs a strong support system away from the work place in order to be successful,” said Arthur.

“My husband and I have been together for almost 20 years, and he has always been tremendously supportive of my career choices and

decisions.”

Arthur also attributes much of her career success to Secretary Terry Peach and Secretary Jim Reese, her successors. The two men provided Arthur the opportunity to work for ODAFF during their tenure.

When asked what word describes Arthur the best, passionate was the word she chose. For those who know Arthur, there is not a more fitting word to describe a woman of her magnitude.

“I encourage students to pursue any opportunities that are put before then,” said Arthur. “There are always adults looking to provide guidance and mentorship that want to see students succeed- ask these mentors for guidance and advice.”

A piece of advice Arthur would give to Connors State students?

“I believe that good things come to those who are honest, hardworking, and loyal,” said Arthur. “Students

On October 26 in Indianapolis, Ind., 12 Connors State students were recognized on the national stage and received their American FFA Degree, the highest level of membership a student can achieve as an FFA member. The American FFA Degree is awarded to FFA members who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to the FFA. The students traveled to Indianapolis to compete, and receive these honors. The American FFA Degree is bestowed upon a select group of students in recognition of their years of academic and professional excellence. To be

eligible, FFA members must have earned and productively invested $7,500 through a supervised agricultural experience program in which they started, own, or hold a professional position in an existing enterprise. Recipients must also complete 50 hours of community service and demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities and civic involvement. Each year, the National FFA Organization honors FFA members who show the utmost dedication to the organization through their desire to develop their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success

Women’s Basketball Season Has Early Success The Connors State Cowgirl’s basketball team heads to their sixth win for the season moving their record to six wins and one loss. The team is led by head coach Jamie Fisher and assistant coaches Nate Bell and Megan Hartness.

Guiding the team are six powerful sophomores, Kailen Wright from Wylie, Texas, Melina Ludlow from Talihina, Oklahoma, Tateum Jones from Hugo, Oklahoma, Jessica White from Porter, Oklahoma, Lauren Wright from Wylie Texas and De’Asia

Reid from Cincinnati, Ohio.

“I credit our team play and coming players buying into our team culture and style of play,” said Fisher. The team is currently averaging 20 assist per game, rebounding margin is at 26.6 per game and 46.7% field goal percentage.

“This team is really fun to coach, because we are playing team basketball,” said Fisher.

CSC Livestock Judging Team Successful on the Road Connors State College Livestock Judging Team has had a successful run over the last month. At the Cimarron Classic the freshman team was High Team Overall, High Team in sheep/goats, High team in hogs, High team in cattle, 2nd high team in reason, Katie Kempen- 2nd overall, 1st in hogs, and 3rd in reasons Jordan Strickler- 4th overall, Kristen Massingill- 6th overall, 5th in hogs, Maddie Schroeder- 8th overall, 4th in sheep/goats, Logan Jackson10th overall.

The sophomore team was 3rd high team overall, 3rd in reasons, 3rd in sheep and goats, 4th in hogs, 4th in cattle, Daniel Lujan- high

individual overall, 1st in reasons, 1st in cattle, 3rd in sheep and goats, Dalton Flatt- 7th overall, 2nd in cattle.

The sophomore team also competed at the American Royal in Kansas City. They were 4th high team overall, 2nd high team in cattle, 5th high team in sheep/ goats, 5th high team in reasons, and Dalton Flatt was 8th high individual overall.

Men’s Basketball Goes Undefeated The Connors Cowboy’s basketball team is starting their season off with a winning record at eight wins and no losses. The team is led by head coach Bill Muse and assistant coach Jamal Russell.

Cowboy Sophomore team members include; Caleb Riggs from Okay, Oklahoma, Daylon Tanksley from Fort Worth, Texas, Callen Haydon from El Reno, Oklahoma, Isaiah Francis from Beckley, West Virginia, Jordan Graham from Farmington, Michigan, and Jimmie Kelly from Fort Worth, Texas.

Cowboy Freshman team members include; Jace Jordan from Broken Bow, Oklahoma, Jahcoree Ealy from Twin Groves, Arkansas, Gabe Hornsby from Bentonville, Arkansas, Jarquavious Cain from Jonesboro, Arkansas, Isaac Barger from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lloyd Houston from Okay, Oklahoma and Oumar Keita from Hazard, Kentucky.

The Cowboys have defeated Southern Shreveport, Coahoma CC, Southwestern Christian, Arkansas Baptist, Oklahoma Wesleyan, Central Baptist and Mid-America Christian.

Going forward the Cowboys will face Western Oklahoma, Eastern Oklahoma, Cedar Valley, Southern Shreveport, Seminole State, Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa, Northeastern Oklahoma, Northern Oklahoma-Enid, Redlands and Murray State.

“This is one of the most talented teams that I have ever been around.

If we can continue to work hard and stay focused then our season will prove great success,” said Russell.

CSC Shooting Sports Host High School Contest CSC Shooting Sports Team hosted a shooting sports tournament for high school students over the course of eight days starting in October and finishing out the first part of November. The students were able to choose if they would like to shoot trap, skeet, or both events throughout the tournament.

They also offered traditional and 3-D archery courses for archery students. Connors State College Shooting Sports team offered

scholarships to the top two individuals, and buckles and plaques were also awarded to their teams.

A number of different schools that attended the event throughout the multiple days and it allowed for a good recruiting tool for the College to bring students on campus and allow them to look around.
