FEATURE

Muse grabs Career Win 700 Using a balanced scoring attack and tough defense, the Connors State Cowboys burst out of the gate in the post-holiday portion of their schedule as they rolled to a 71-54 win over Redlands Community College in an Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference game January 6 at Melvin Self Fieldhouse.

With the victory, Cowboy head coach Bill Muse notched his 700th career win at the helm of the Cowboys spanning the past 30 years.

“You don’t have this kind of success by yourself. If you don’t have good players, you can’t get 700 no matter how good a coach you are,” said Muse, eighth among active NJCAA coaches in wins.

“I’ve been fortunate to have good players around me along with good assistants who helped recruit those good players. And most importantly I’ve had the support of a family that’s let me do this for 30 years.”

Connors got balanced scoring with Bixby freshman Xavier Glenn scoring 17 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to go along with Jahcoree Ealy and Jordan Tillmon, who had 15 each in the first half and finished with 21 and 19 points, respectively.

Muse was perhaps most pleased with the Cowboys’ defense, limiting the Cougars to fewer than 60 points.

“We’ve talked about stepping and guarding all week long. We played good defense on the tough non-conference wins we had with Paris, Neosho and Independence and the two conference loses we’ve had they scored up in the 80s so we know what we have to do to be successful,” said Muse.

“I was real pleased with the job (assistant coach) Bill (Muse Jr.) did this week as I missed some time with health issues, and he did most of the coaching tonight.”

Connors (15-2) started a little slow

but finally managed to grab the lead for good five minutes into the game and led by as many as 20 late in the game against the Cougars (10-8).

-Bill Muse remembers the day about 10 years ago where another veteran college basketball coach like himself, sitting next to him while watching a game at the Bedouin Shrine Classic prep basketball, nudged him with a question.

Ken Hayes was that coach. He’s long since retired from a career that went from Northeastern State to Tulsa to New Mexico State and Oral Roberts.

Muse was far from retirement at that point. He had spent 11 years at the Division I level as an assistant and two decades as the head coach at Connors State, eventually adding the title of athletic director. He’d had three trips to the NJCAA Final Four in that time.

“Ken looked at me and said ‘Bill, CONNORS CONNECTION

you’re at the crossroads of your career.’” Muse said.

That he was. In the neighborhood of 500 wins at the time at the helm on the Warner campus, he was conceivably within range of being one of the winningest junior college coaches ever, as Hayes made a point of saying.

“Who knew then Gene Bess would coach as long as he did,” Muse said, laughing.

No joke. Bess would coach another decade at the place he called home from 1971 on, Three Rivers (Mo.). He retired in 2020 at the age of 85 with 1,300 wins and is alone at the top of the all-time list.

With his January 6th win, on the court named after him in 2014, the 64-year-old Muse gained career win No. 700.

He stands at 700-248.That’s eighth among active coaches, 22 from being fourth on that list.

The road Muse chose at that point of the conversation is obvious. He bypassed any thought of moving on in the direction of a NCAA Division I job — all except one he got a phone call about, but just weeks after Connors put his name on the court seven years ago.

When asked last week about that job, Muse didn’t want to name the school or the position publicly. But it was a lesson from the Division I coach who helped launch his career that got him and kept him in Warner, that being Coastal Carolina’s Cliff Ellis.

More on that shortly.

Muse is a New Jersey native. His father, H. Rogers Muse, coached football, basketball and tennis at various schools before taking over at Glen Rock, N.J., as athletic director. He died in 2003 and is a member of the New Jersey State Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Bill Muse was a 1975 Glen Rock grad, a 6-2 wing who played a year at the University of Mississippi before a knee injury shortened his career. He graduated with a bachelor of science

degree in recreation administration in 1979.

Ellis hired Muse as a graduate assistant during Ellis’ tenure at South Alabama. There, Muse earned his master’s in physical education and became a full-time assistant, then when Ellis went to Clemson, Muse, who would also be part of the staffs at Morehead State and Georgia State, was summoned to be part of Ellis’ staff at Clemson.

“That’s where I wanted to be, at the Division I level,” Muse said. “And I interviewed for a few in that time.

They all kept saying I needed headcoaching experience.”

His only such shots at head coaching was with the title of associate head coach at Georgia State and with the Georgia Peaches, a women’s pro team.

Connors State became that true proving ground. Three years from a national title, the program was going through a rough patch with several coaches following Ed Stepp’s run to the top before Muse came in.

The new coach landed what would be five Division I players in his first two seasons. Sammie Haley and Simeon Haley were a pair of 7-foot twins that wound up at Missouri. Frank Harris (Stanford), Cyrus Jones (West Virginia) and Paul Banks (Texas-Arlington). His first year he just missed the NJCAA national tournament. The second season his team reached the final four.

“Those two teams were probably the best two I had,” Muse said.

But not the only ones.

Muse has been to the national tournament 10 times, the last being 2018. the 2017 NJCAA National Tournament was special for the fact his son, Bill, Jr., a ball boy for previous trips to Hutchinson, made this one as a player.

“His sophomore year we started out 1-3,” Muse Sr. recalls. I remember riding down the road with him and saying ‘hey, you know, going to the national tournament and playing at Hutch, I know it’s been a goal of yours

to play there but if we don’t, it’s not a big deal. If we get there, we get there.’

“Then we won like 23 straight, win conference, win regional, win game in nationals and finish in the Sweet 16 and he got two games there.”

In actuality there were strings of 14 consecutive immediately after that 1-3 start, then 11 consecutive until their elimination in the Sweet 16.

Now son is coaching alongside father.

“I look back how things happened on my path and I don’t regret a minute of it,” Muse Sr. said. “I met my wife (Connie) here. My son not only played but is coaching with me. I don’t know if things were all programmed this way but it just happened to all happen here. If you’re at a place as long as I’ve had, you have to take ownership of it and that’s what I did.”

And it’s brought about the sense of loyalty in relationships he learned under Ellis. Now 76 and having reached the 800-win plateau, eighth all-time in Division I, Ellis benefited from a player Muse sent him, Josh Cameron, who helped them win a conference championship and get into two NCAA tournaments.

“One of my memories of Bill was when we were at South Alabama and Gene Bartow and UAB were coming in for a game downtown,” Ellis recalled.

“Bill would go out and put flyers on cars downtown that we had a game.

He was good about promoting the program.

“You can’t have the success that he’s had through the years, through the grind, through the ups and downs, if you’re made of plastic. Plastic breaks.

He’s a very strong-minded, strong individual who has been able to manage the times. His kids as a rule have done well coming through there.

He’s a Jersey kid who has coached in the South all his life and he made that transition.”

Ellis had Muse Jr. as a player. “(Muse Jr.) studies the game. He’s lived it all his life and he got out on his own and got different perspectives

from here and also at Southern Miss,” Ellis said.

That, in turn, has helped Muse Sr. “Some of my thinking is a little old school still, and he’s been able to bring me up to date on what is actually taking place at a four-year school,” Muse Sr. said of his son. “He’s got some real perspective on the current college culture, whether it has to do with rooms, facilities or game management. He’s seen those things up close and he tried to add to our program from that.

“Recruiting is where he’s changed my mind some. Him coming out of two D1 schools. He’s seen that talent and he’s been able I’m to convince me of kids that weren’t ready yet or ones I thought were ready and they weren’t.”

Junior had a chance to join Chris Beard’s staff at Texas Tech as a graduate assistant but chose to join his dad’s staff. Beard left Texas Tech last year to take the Texas job.

“You wonder how that might have turned out,” Muse Sr. said. “I knew Chris when he coached at Seminole State. I’m glad my son got these different perspectives. I also think junior college coaches are the best training grounds because you have to do everything from laundry to weight training to promotions to marketing to academics to game set up and management. He looked at that hard and decided he wanted to be here. I think he loves it more than I do.”

To hear Junior, the best thing is learning from the guy he was once ball boy for.

“Coming to the office every single day and getting to work alongside him. Learning from him on a daily basis is great. Seeing how dad does it and wanting to learn from him every day is awesome.”

As athletic director, the elder Muse would have some significant input into who follows him, even perhaps if he gives up that job and basketball simultaneously.

“Maybe he can get out on his own.

I’ve kind of encouraged that,” Muse Sr.

said. “I was 34 when I got here, He’s 25. Following me might not be the best thing for him at that point. Maybe getting a few years as an assistant here, then getting out on his own, carving his own identity.”

First, there’s 700, a win they enjoyed together.

“I guess I’ve coached a long time, had some really good players and really good assistants that have put this together,” Muse Sr. said. “Seven hundred is a special milestone because I don’t know if I’ll be around to get 800. I’m 64, I’m still in good health, but there’s other things I want to do.”

Game at the Mabee Center came in a snowstorm, had to spend night in hotel at Tulsa unable to get back to campus.

3. Knock off of No. 1 NEO, Jan. 27, 1994. The 91-82 win came in front of a packed Melvin Self Fieldhouse.

4. Connors 96, Spartanburg (S.C.) Methodist 90, March 20, 2017: Getting there after a 69-64 Region II championship over NorthernTonkawa, this win was special because Bill Jr., was a starter on the team. The Cowboys reached the Sweet 16.

5. No. 1 national seed captured, 2015. Connors beat Redlands 90-80 for the Region II championship which propelled them to a No. 1 national seed for the first time in school history. The team finished 32-2 with 30 consecutive wins and an Elite Eight finish.

Annual Fall Bull Sale Averages $3,100 Connors State College hosted the annual Fall Bull Test Sale December 2, 2021, at the Bull Test Facility on the Warner Campus. The highest seller, a Semi-Angus sired by SAV Rainfall 6846, was consigned by Ms. Brooklyn Lee of Vinta, OK, brought $6,000.

The well-attended event was hosted collaboratively by the CSC show team

with help from the livestock judging team. The success of the event can be attributed to the dedication of the show team as they worked concessions during the event and throughout the semester when calculating the performance reports and the CSC livestock judging team helping with paperwork, penning

cattle, and monitoring call-in bids.

A total of 20 bulls sold in this year’s sale. The sale averaged was $3100 per lot.

10th Annual Rodeo, Horse Show Draws Large Number of Entries Connors State College hosted the 10th Annual Alumni and Friends Timed Event Rodeo and Versatility Ranch Horse Show on Friday, November 19, and Saturday November 20.

The rodeo had over 200 entries with a little over 160 entries in the VRH Show.

“We had a good turnout for both events, and it was good to see old friends and new faces,” said Chisolm Daily. “There was participation from

alumni, current students, and friends in the program.”

“The VRH show continues to grow here at Connors.” said Jake Walker, rodeo/equine instructor and coach.

“Folks are turning out to the events and they are reminiscent to shows from years ago, when exhibitors were less motivated by the year end awards and World show qualifications and just enjoyed taking their horse to a show. It is refreshing.”

Dovyl, Fesmire, Kelley and McDonald earn top honors during annual Cowboy Cattle Showdown The annual Cowboy Cattle Showdown hosted by Connors State College at Fred Williams Arena took place December 4, 2021.

More than 50 exhibitors from three different states attended with total entries reaching close to 200 animals.

Dylan Enyart of Vinita, Oklahoma, sorted the heifer show while Justin Jensen of Yukon, Oklahoma, a past All-American judging team member at Connors, evaluated the steer show.

There were 14 breeds and 60 classes of heifers and 12 total classes

of steers.

Katie Dovyl exhibited the Grand Champion Steer and Darla Fesmire showed the Reserve Grand Steer.

The Supreme Champion heifer was the Shorthorn Plus shown by Kassie Kelley and the Reserve Supreme heifer was the champion commercial heifer shown by Kara McDonald.

As part of their annual fundraisers, the livestock judging team coordinated and ran the show and the beef show team ran the concession.

CSC Celebrates Nursing Graduates During Ceremony Connors State College celebrated the graduation of 42 new nurses – 20 graduates from the traditional program and 22 from the Career Ladder program – in a pinning ceremony held December 10, 2021, on the Warner campus in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

The pinning ceremony signifies the nursing students’ official initiation into the brotherhood and sisterhood of nursing. The ceremony is rich with symbolism and is a rite of passage.

Recruitment Hosts Connors Cowboy Roundup The Office of Recruitment hosted Connors Cowboy Roundup, a campus preview event on Saturday, December 4, 2021. Connors invted prospective students and their families to the Warner campus for a firsthand look at what Connors has to offer students.

The event was attended by a variety of students with one family driving all night from Colorado after their son’s football game ended! Attendees were greeted at check-in by students and staff and given a welcome bag including Connors’ gear and information about campus programs and opportunities.

The event began with a warm welcome in the Fine Arts auditorium from various faculty and staff. Guests were then able to choose their own schedule for the day. Opportunities for engagement included presentations from leadership within multiple academic programs and

divisions, the Dean of Students, the CSC Development Foundation and booths from student organizations.

At the conclusion of the morning’s schedule of learning, guests enjoyed lunch in the cafeteria, followed by a campus tour. The majority of the prospective students that attended Cowboy Roundup are currently high school seniors; 91% of those seniors who attended the event have already applied for Fall 2022 admission. The event proved to be a success!

Connors Cowboy Stampede will be hosted on Saturday, February 26, 2022, and offer a similar format and opportunities to learn more about Connors State College. New Options for Concurrent Advisement, Enrollment The Fall of 2021 was an exciting time for the enrollment office with the introduction of a pilot program for concurrent student enrollment.

The program allowed Connors State College to travel to area high schools to provide on-site advisement and enrollment. The process was met with approval from participant parents, host institutions and concurrently enrolled students that enjoyed the increased communication and feeling of community provided during the process.

Tosha Stout spearheaded the program through her commitment to outreach and consistent communication with partner institutions.

The academic affairs and admissions offices worked diligently in order to ensure that the popular program was a success, and their efforts will continue to support growth within the program in the future!

Rock Earns Doctorate, Receives Phoenix Seven Feathers Award Dr. Lynett Rock began her career at Connors State College in 2005 and is currently the Division Chair of Mathematics, Science, and Physical Education. She enjoys teaching and has a passion for helping her students.

“I came to Connors to make a difference in the lives of students from this area and encourage others to find a pathway into STEM careers.”

This year has been full of honors as she is the 2021Cherokee Phoenix Third Annual Seven Feathers Award recipient in Education and completed her PhD in Education from Oklahoma State University. In addition to her PhD, she also has a Masters in Physics from OSU (1994). Lynett is a Muskogee/Warner native, a graduate of Warner High School, and a proud citizen of the Cherokee Nation.

Teaching runs in her family – her mother was a high school math teacher and several aunts and uncles teach. Dr. Rock keeps in touch with former students and it always excited to hear about their journeys once they leave Connors. Kasey Wagnon, a former student, stated that Lynett “is caring, thoughtful, and determined to help students!” Kasey considers Dr. Rock to be an incredible mentor. John Smithson II states that he had “never forgotten how much of a passion she had for helping students”. Hearing kind words from her ex-students means more than any award she receives to Lynett.

By far the neatest thing that Lynett has ever experienced was being on a playing card. APS featured Lynett on their set of playing cards titled Across the Spectrum. According to their website “Each Across the Spectrum playing card deck includes 26 different profiles of women and

gender minorities in physics, along with their current profession and where they earned their degree. When you play with these cards, you will see how diverse backgrounds and experiences contribute to a stronger scientific community for everyone.”

Who wouldn’t be excited about being the Queen of Spades and Clovers?

Besides teaching at Connors, Lynett has spent her life encouraging women and minorities to pursue STEM careers in a variety of ways. She is the co-chief judge of the Muskogee Regional Science Fair, has spoken at the American Physical Society’s conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics twice and to the STEMpathy group at Skidmore College. Lynett has also presented at numerous conferences. Her research examined what stories cowgirls tell about the male dominated rodeo arena.

Another way she gives back to the community is by being a founding member of the Board of Directors of RISE (Restoring Identities after Sexual Exploitation). RISE is a shelter for the minor women that are victims of sex trafficking.

In her spare time, Lynett barrel races and spends time with her family. She is the mother of three (all of her children have taken classes at Connors) and a Glammy to one amazing grandson.

ATHLETICS

Diamond Cowboys Open Season February 7 The Connors State Cowboys will open their 2022 season February 7 with a doubleheader v. Oklahoma Wesleyan at Biff Thompson Field at Perry Keith Park at 1 p.m.

The Cowboys are ranked 19th in the country in the NJCAA Preseason National Poll. The Cowboys have three outstanding hitters returning in infielders Tyson Fourkiller and Grant Randall along with outfielder Jonathan Pena.

“These three have had outstanding careers here and can really swing the bat and make things happen, they definitely have the ability to make our lineup go,” commented longtime Cowboy Head Coach Perry Keith.

“We really think our lineup will be productive from top to bottom and we will play good defense,” added Keith.

The pitching staff returns two weekend starters Aaron Hosack and Mozart Duarte.

“These guys really pitched well for us last year and Hosack really got

going in the second half of the season and was very dominant for us,” Keith commented.

The Cowboys have added a lot of quality pitching for this year’s season, “I really think we are back where we need to be on the mound with a good group of guys who can pitch,” said Keith.

The Cowboys have also had success in the classroom being recognized by the ABCA for Academic Achievement and the Cowboys had a team GPA of 3.3 this past fall semester.

Shooting Sports Teams see Success at Fall Competitions SHOTGUN TEAM The Shotgun Team travelled to five shooting competitions this last fall.

The first was in Fort Hays, Kansas, where the Cowboys earned 6th HOA Team, 4th in Skeet Doubles, and 4th in Sporting Clays as a team.

North Platte, Neb., at the 7 State Prairie Circuit Conference was second shoot of the fall, and also the shoot where all freshmen members were in attendance. Results from North Platte Shoot were: Champion Junior College Team, 2nd in Sporting Clays, 4th HOA team. Tell Dixon was the high sporting clays individual, made the All-Conference male team, and earned

a Top 5 Placing in men’s trap.

At the ACUI Upper Midwest Conference Championship in Grand Island, Neb., Connors shooters earned 5th HOA Team, 6th in trap and skeet, 2nd in sporting clays, and 5th in super sporting clays. Beth Spears was in the Top 10 HOA females, in the Top 15 in skeet, Top 10 in trap, and 6th in sporting clays. Leann Stephens was in the Top 15 HOA Females, Top 10 in skeet, Top 15 in super sporting, and Top 10 in sporting. In mens competition, Gus Sumner and Thane Patterson were HOA Top 25. Jesse Irving was 6th in sporting clays, and

Caleb Englebretson was Top 10 in sporting clays.

The first weekend in November, the team traveled to Goodwell, Okla., to participate in Oklahoma Panhandle State University’s competition.

Connors took home first place Trap and Sporting Clays team, and 2nd HOA Team honors. Jacob Sellers was 2nd place men’s trap individual, Caleb Englebretson was 1st place Sporting Clays while Gus Sumner was 2nd.

The last shoot of the fall was in Nashville, Tenn., at the ACUI Eastern Conference Super Shoot. This was one of the largest in the fall

semester with 250 competitors over 27 colleges ranging from Division 1 to Division 4 schools. Connors State was the 6th HOA Team, 1st Place International Skeet (I-Skeet) team and 2nd Place Bunker Trap Team. Top 5 Trap individual in mens was Jesse Irving with a score of 99/100, after a shootoff. Jacob Sellers was a Top 15 skeet individual. Dylan Propps earned Top 15 Sporting Clays. Colby Cook was 4th place in I-Skeet, while Gus Sumner was 5th Place, and Dylan Propps was 6th Place. Thane Patterson, Tell Dixon, and Jacob Sellers all placed in the top 15 in Bunker Trap.

ARCHERY TEAM At the USA Archery 3D Regional Collegiate Competition in Hattiesburg, Miss.,. Konner Ingersoll was the 3rd place Male in Compound, Matthew Hargrove was the 2nd place male in Bowhunter. Overall, Connors State has the 2nd place bowhunter male team, 3rd place bowhunter female team, and 3rd place mixed compound team.

The second competition – the USA Archery 3D Nationals in Foley, Alabama – saw approximately 300 archers from 30 colleges. In open compound, Konner Ingersoll placed in the top 20, while Anna Lee was on A

Range first place mixer team. Connors also had the opportunity to compete in the mixed team rounds.

HOLIDAY CHEER Connors State College had a blast joining in the holiday festivities this year. Many of our staff, faculty, and students had a part in decorating and making our campus feel like home by decorating colorful lights and trees all over the campus to spread Holiday cheer.

CHRISTMAS PARADES CSC was also invited to participate in the Warner and Muskogee Christmas parades.

The campus gator was decorated with festive Christmas lights. Current students, future students and staff members bundled up in the cold weather to pass out candy in the parades. CSC was honored to be able to participate in a holiday activity with their communities!
