Keith Earns 1,700th Win On March 29, the Cowboys swept TCS Post Grad, garnering Hall of Fame Coach Perry Keith his 1,700th career win. Keith’s record is now an amazing 1700-481.

To celebrate this milestone, Coach Keith was presented with an engraved bat by Connors State College President Dr. Ron Ramming.

All of Coach Keith’s wins have been at Connors State. This is his 36th season with the Cowboys.

74th Aggie Day Draws Nearly 1,400 For Competition The 74th Aggie Day Interscholastic at Connors State College was held April 1, 2021. Almost 1,400 individuals were in attendance with advisors, drivers and guests present during a COVID-19 restricted event. Even though attendance was restricted in number per school and five events were eliminated to allow for social distancing, a large number of schools and students traveled to Warner for the contests. There were individual teams of students in competition in 19 contests. Connors hosted FFA Chapters or 4-H groups from over 160 different schools or counties.

There were schools and 4-H clubs or counties from Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, and Texas in competition.

In 1947, the CSC “Aggie Day” was just a small idea, under the guidance of agriculture instructor Robert Hodges. No one could have predicted the longevity of this event, held annually the first Thursday in April, or the growth of its popularity Connors State Aggie Day is one of the largest interscholastic competition

in the state of Oklahoma and covers a variety of disciplines within the agriculture industry. It continues to draw students from across the region to put their skills and knowledge to the test in subjects like, but not limited to, Entomology, Floriculture, Electricity, Farm and Agri-Business Management, Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, Ag Communications, Food Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, Land Evaluation, Rangeland Management, Soil and Water Conservation, Meat Quality and Evaluation, Nursery and Landscape Management, Milk Quality and Products, Agronomy, Poultry Evaluation and, of course, Livestock Judging. For the student, the interscholastic competition is a hands-on ‘final exam’ for their area of study.

“An event of this size doesn’t take place without the help from many departments and individuals,” said Debby Golden, Department of Agriculture chair. “Thank you to everyone that volunteered and worked for a very successful 2021 Aggie Day. We hope to see you all

back for the 75th Aggie Day on April 7, 2022.”

Grand Sweepstakes was awarded to Vian FFA. Reserve Grand Sweepstakes was awarded to the Silo FFA Chapter, while Tuttle FFA was 3rd in sweepstakes followed closely by Edmond FFA. Sweepstakes tabulation is based on the number of competitions in which each chapter earned points.

Annual Spring Gathering Raises Funds for Equine, Rodeo On March 6, 2021, the Equine & Rodeo programs hosted their Annual Spring Gathering Banquet and Fundraiser in the Melvin Self Field House for social distancing purposes.

Over 200 attended the event and had the opportunity to win many items through a silent and a live auction, as well as a raffle. Top Salesman for the raffle was Mikayla Moody and Reserve Salesman was Kassie Adams.

Connors Rodeo Alumnus Paul Bogart, who is now a Nashville singer/ songwriter, was the entertainment for the evening.

“Paul is one of the Connors family and we appreciate him donating a portion of his fee to help us add to the quality of our Spring Gathering,”

said Jake Lawson, Assistant Dean of Students and Equine program director.

The Equine and Rodeo Programs also recognized and awarded student scholarships. The Fred Williams Ag Equine & Rodeo Scholarship was awarded to Dequan Laskey, Kassie Adams and Sara Knowles. The John N. Henderson Equine Scholarship recipient was Sarah Knowles. Alexa Howell received the J.E. Myers Equine Scholarship. The Erin Duncan Scholarship was awarded to Cassidy Heskett.

“We are blessed to have the support of our alumni CSC horse owners, and various other patrons and vendors.

Through their help in this event, we

are able to continue to strengthen our programs,” said Jake Walker, Assistant Rodeo Coach and Equine Instructor.

Donations raised from the event go to support program expenses and build scholarship endowments.

Annual Spring Bull Sale A Success Connors State College hosted the annual Spring Bull Sale on April 8, 2021, at the bull test facility on the Warner campus.

“We were very happy with the set of bulls the producers consigned to our spring 2021 bull sale,” said Dr. Ron Ramming, CSC President. “The sale was very successful.”

A total of 46 bulls consigned by more than 20 producers entered this year’s sale. The top selling bull at $5,750 was lot 59, a Simmental/Angus bull produced by Nail Ranch. The sale grossed $132,550, while the lots averaged $2,881.

Sale day, the CSC livestock judging team helped with paperwork, penning cattle, and call-in bids. The show team and shooting sports team worked concessions, and throughout the semester, students calculated the performance reports.

“Being a member of the livestock judging team, I enjoyed helping with the bull sale with my fellow teammates and getting an in-depth understanding of how Connors handles production livestock,” said

“We practice on these bulls, and I appreciate getting to look at them midway through and again on sale day, to see the progression of the bull test program,” said Riley Scott, livestock judging team freshman.

COWBOY FAMILY Dr. Kayse Shrum, Alumna The Oklahoma State University A&M Board of Regents selected Dr. Kayse Shrum – a ’92 Connors State College alumna – as the 19th president of Oklahoma State University, a term that will begin on July 1.

A native Oklahoman, Shrum earned her doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed executive leadership and management training programs at Harvard and Stanford Universities. In 2013, Dr. Shrum was named president of OSU Center for Health Sciences (OSU-CHS), becoming the youngest and first female president and dean of a medical school in the state of Oklahoma. In March 2019, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt appointed her to his Cabinet as Secretary of Science and Innovation.

Dr. Shrum has been recognized time and again for her leadership and contributions to her community and profession. For Connors, she’s a 2019 inductee into the Alumni Hall of Fame.

“Connors State College had a huge impact on my life,” said Dr. Shrum. “The education I received

at CSC gave me the foundation I needed to successfully achieve my goal of becoming a physician. I grew tremendously as a person and a leader during my time at CSC.” Shrum credits Connors with giving her a good foundation for jumping into higher education.

“When I graduated from high school, leaving Coweta was a scary proposition,” said Dr. Shrum. “At CSC, I found the support I needed to become a confident and independent young woman. The greatest gift I received at Connors was lifetime friendships with staff, faculty and administrators, as well as my softball teammates.”

Some highlights of Dr. Shrum’s career include: partnering to create the first tribally affiliated medical school in the United States – the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation; founding the National Center for Wellness and Recovery; and serving on the Governor’s COVID Response Taskforce.

“My husband, Darren, and I dated during my time at Connors and

married shortly after my graduation,” said Dr. Shrum. “We are celebrating 29 years of marriage in May.” The Shrums have six children -three biological and three adopted.

Her son, Colton, attended Connors State.

Nollan Koon, Student A sophomore Cowboy baseball team member, Nollan Koon hails from Yukon, Oklahoma.

A 2019 graduate of Yukon High School, as a kid, Koon always dreamt of being both a police officer and playing in the MLB. As a high school junior, he decided he wanted to pursue a career as a veterinarian.

“I love being around animals, big and small,” said Koon. “I can’t imagine a better job than to be able to take care of them.”

During his senior year, Koon decided to attend Connors after he received a baseball scholarship.

“Connors has allowed me to grow

both mentally and physically,” said Koon. “The small-town environment has allowed me to focus on the things that matter – school and baseball.”

While Koon’s father played football in college, he says he is the first college baseball player in his family.

In addition to attending practice and traveling for ball games, Koon regularly participates in FCA activities.

Upon graduation from Connors, Koon plans to continue his baseball career at a four-year school, while still pursuing his dream of becoming a veterinarian.

In his off time, Koon said he enjoys hunting.

Jonathan Rowe, Staff Jonathan Rowe, a native of Webbers Fall, Okla., is the CSC Coordinator of Residential Life & Special Events and Interim Student Activities Coordinator.

Because his father worked at CSC when he was a child, Rowe said he grew up on the CSC campuses.

“I later attended school at CSC and loved the atmosphere and close family feeling,” said Rowe. “I knew from my time growing up around campus and attending school here that I would one day like to be a part of this same atmosphere that I had always experienced. Once I completed my undergrad degree at NSU, there was a position open in Campus Life, so I decided to apply, and the rest is history.”

Rowe said he enjoys his position at CSC because things are new every day.

“In over seven and a half years of

being here, no two days have been the same,” said Rowe. “There are always new and different interactions with students all the time. Being able to watch the students grow and accomplish goals that they set for themselves is one of the biggest positives of working at CSC. As a Connors alumnus, Rowe said he could write a paper on the benefits of attending CSC. “I would say that the family atmosphere, smaller class sizes, the staff who care and work endlessly to ensure that each student succeeds, and campus life are some major reasons that students should give Connors State College a shot,” said Rowe.

Rowe’s wife, Jana, is the CSC Assistant Director of Financial Aid. “We got married and attended CSC together,” said Rowe. “Last year, we

welcomed our beautiful daughter Fallyn to the world.”

Rowe enjoys singing, and said that growing up in church, he has been singing ever since he could hold a microphone. The Rowes are very involved at the Muskogee First Assembly of God. Rowe loves sports, the outdoors, hunting, and is a huge OU fan.

Steven Sly, Faculty

A native of Tahlequah, Okla., Steven Sly is a mathematics instructor at Connors State College.

“Ever since I enrolled as a student at CSC, I loved it,” said Sly. “I worked as an Academic Advisor so I became close with most of the CSC staff.

Now as a mathematics instructor, I really enjoy the faculty. I have always enjoyed working with students and making a difference and I knew this was all meant to be.”

Sly graduated from both Connors State College and Northeastern State University with degrees in Mathematics, and now teaches Math Readiness, Pre-Calculus Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus I, Calculus II and Applied Math at Connors.

“Having had some tie with CSC since 2009, I feel like CSC is my second home,” said Sly. “Connors has provided me with an opportunity to do what I do best and that is share my passion for mathematics with as many people as possible.”

Sly said Connors is a great place for students to get their start.

“Starting college can be a difficult transition for many students,” said Sly. “Connors seems to make the process

gentler and simpler to understand, or seamless.”

He said that the students, the people he works with, and the opportunity to change lives are his favorite parts of Connors.

“It has been a dream of mine to start a computer science / math club at CSC,” said Sly. “Since there is a computer science program currently being developed, this dream should be coming to fruition shortly.”

Happily married to his wife Regan, the pair have three children – two of which are boy-girl twins who were born on Sly’s 26th birthday.

Sly has solved many problems from various math journals, and enjoys playing the guitar and drums, and mathematics and coding.

“There are too many things to name that I enjoy, but most of all, I enjoy being a father,” said Sly. “Cheesy, but true.”

EDUCATION Carl Albert, Connors State and Eastern Announce Academic Partnership to Provide Additional Opportunities to Students Carl Albert State College, Connors State College and Eastern Oklahoma State College announced today an academic partnership that will expand access and provide additional educational opportunities for students in southeast Oklahoma.

The CACE Consortium, which is an acronym for Carl Albert, Connors and Eastern, includes the three rural, two-year colleges in southeast Oklahoma. The three community colleges will partner to offer a wider variety of general education and major courses to students through faculty and course sharing.

The consortium was announced at a signing ceremony during a special meeting of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education in Oklahoma City. The institutions’ presidents participated in the signing via a video feed into the Regents’ meeting.

Carl Albert State College President Dr. Jay Falkner praised the partnership as an innovative approach to help meet the needs of students in rural areas.

“This partnership is an important example of how institutions can work together to remove barriers to higher education and best serve the needs of

all of our students and communities,” Falkner said. “Focusing our efforts on expanding access to additional courses will benefit all of our students.

I am grateful for the cooperation and commitment shown by the academic leaders from all three institutions to make this partnership a reality.”

Per the agreement, each receiving college will provide the classroom space, technology and administrative oversight of advising and enrolling students. The sending site will provide the instruction. Each college will receive the tuition, fees and enrollment data from the students enrolled at their site.

Connors State College President Dr. Ron Ramming said the institutions will use both online courses and live courses taught with video conferencing software such as Zoom to teach students from all three institutions simultaneously.

“This collaborative effort will enable each institution to improve efficiencies by combining low enrollment courses and avoiding academic redundancies,” Ramming said. “Many institutions across the nation recognize the need to increase access and improve student learning while also reducing the costs to students and their

families. This is a strategic effort to utilize the expertise of our talented faculty within each institution and continue to fulfill our mission of offering high quality, affordable degrees.”

Each institution will determine which courses will be sent or received between the colleges on a yearly basis. An equal number of courses will be taught and received for each institution.

Eastern Oklahoma State College President Dr. Janet Wansick said the agreement will begin in the fall 2021 semester and be reevaluated at the end of three years. She said the institutions are optimistic for a successful long-term partnership that will have a positive impact in southeast Oklahoma.

“We all agree that innovative collaborations are essential to economic growth. I believe this exciting partnership will use our collective strengths to better prepare our students for success and help meet the workforce needs of our state,” Wansick said. “We look forward to a long and successful partnership between Carl Albert, Connors State and Eastern.”

CSC Alumna Sharra Nicholson Named Women’s Foodservice Forum Changemaker Connors State College would like to congratulate Sharra Nicholson; Senior Manager, Foodservice Sales, The Hershey Company for being named a Changemaker through the Women’s Foodservice Forum. According to the WFF website, The Change Makers program helps build a strong pipeline of women leaders eager to propel their personal career advancement and champion the professional

growth of others in the Food Industry.

A WFF Change Maker is a professional woman at the beginning stages of her career. She shows high potential in leadership competencies recognized

by WFF. Identified by her company, she is a rising star within her organization, while modeling inclusive leadership behaviors that support gender equity within a company’s corporate culture.

CSC Alumni Billy Taylor Named to Top 30 Power List by the Journal Record Billy Taylor, Connors alumni, is the chief executive officer for Armstrong Bank, a community bank with 31 locations across Oklahoma and Arkansas. Taylor has been with the bank for 33 years, ensuring the institution lives out the mission and values of a true community bank.

Taylor says his goal is to ensure Armstrong Bank maintains its core values of honesty, integrity, and firstclass service.

Because of Taylor’s strategic vision and leadership, combined with the bank’s dynamic board of directors and management team, Armstrong Bank has experienced tremendous growth and success in recent years. With $2.5 billion in assets, Armstrong has more than 30 locations in two states, including the addition of five locations in central Oklahoma and five locations in northeast Oklahoma in 2020.

Taylor served as president and CEO of Armstrong Bank for many years before transitioning to his current role as CEO and member of the bank’s board of directors. He joined

the board in 1992 while working as executive vice president and head of lending. He was named president in 2004.

Taylor began with Armstrong in 1988 as vice president and branch manager of the bank’s Warner, Oklahoma, location.

Prior to Armstrong, he worked for nearly eight years as an agricultural lender with the Farm Credit System.

Born and raised near Muskogee, Taylor graduated from Oktaha Public Schools. After earning his associate degree from Connors State College, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from Oklahoma State University in 1980.

Taylor currently serves as a director on the following boards: Oklahoma Bankers Association, First Life and Casualty Reinsurance Co., and Muskogee County Industrial Trust Authority. He completed Graduate School of Banking of the South (now Graduate Banking School of Louisiana State University) in 1991 and the National Commercial Lending School

in 1992.

Taylor enjoys ranching and resides in Muskogee with his wife of 35 years, Kristi.

TEAMS Cowboy and Cowgirl Basketball Wrap Up Seasons COWBOYS Connors State came up empty on its final nine possessions Wednesday at the Stride Bank Center in Enid and the Cowboys’ Region II tournament stay was a short one, losing 66-63 to Northeastern A&M in the first round.

The Cowboys appeared to have control of the game when Jarquavious Cain capitalized on a feed from Mason Alexander for a bucket and one with 5:03 to play to go up 10, 63-53.

But the Cowboys were 0-for-7 from that point while also committing three turnovers, including a shot clock violation, down the stretch.

“We let it slip away because we took some difficult shots, some quick shots, and they’re all sophomores and handled the last five minutes better than we did,” said Connors’ coach Bill Muse. “It’s disappointing. But I thought we played 35 strong minutes.”

Alexander was whistled for traveling with a chance to increase that 10-point lead. Kalil Camara’s 3 with 4:12 to go began the rally for the Norsemen.

Tucson Redding’s 3 from the left wing with 23.2 left gave NEO its first lead since early in the second half.

The Cowboys took a timeout with 12.1 left to set up for a final shot.

Gavin Harris’ off-balance 3 just off the baseline near the Cowboys’ bench was off the mark and Jadan Graves hit a free throw before missing the second just before time expired.

“We didn’t set up well,” Muse said.

“Right guy but not the clean look we wanted.”

Though up as much as 20-8 on Gavin Harris’ 3 midway through the first half, the Cowboys found themselves trailing late before taking a 34-33 lead at the half.

Nikita Konstantynovsyi led NEO (14-8) with 15 points and 10 rebounds and will play NOC-Tonkawa on Friday.

Redding had 11. In all, four Norsemen scored in double figures. Camara had 11 and Graves 10.

Cain led Connors, which finishes at 14-8, with 22 points in his final game.

Sammy Mike had 12 and Harris along with Jordan Tillmon had 9 points each.

Harris, like Cain, is a sophomore, but will have an extra year of eligibility due to a short freshman season. Mike and Harris are also freshmen.

“Battling through COVID and the late (second semester) start to the season, starting three freshmen, that showed down the stretch,” said Muse. “I can’t fault the effort; we didn’t close the game when we had a chance. Just one of those things.”

The Muldrow native poured in 20 second-half points to lead Cowgirls coach Jamie Fisher to his seventh straight appearance in the tournament which starts later this week with a 62-57 win over Western State.

Dallas freshman Kionce Woods got the Cowgirls off to a good start with 10 first-quarter points, staking Connors (10-13) to an early seven-point lead.

But the Lady Pioneers clawed their way back, thanks to a 12-of-15 free throw performance in the first half by Brianna Cotter who led all scorers with 31 points, and Connors lead was just four at intermission.

The third quarter, which has been a bit of a problem period for the Cowgirls during the season, was their best of the night as they outscored Western 19-15 to lead 50-42. Mayes had three buckets and was 5-for-5 from the charity line in the quarter.

However, Western wasn’t through as they closed the gap to 60-57 with 33.9 seconds to play. But the Connors defense held tough and Zee McCallister hit two free throws in the final 23 seconds to ice the win.

“We’re a team that lacks confidence in winning and so we sometimes have these spells when things start to get away from us,” said Fisher. “That has cost us some games this season but tonight we held on for the win to realize our expectations to make the regional tournament.

a way to win at the end of the game.

Cowgirl Softball Takes Down NOC-Enid In Game One Cowgirls Claim Lead in Fifth Inning to Defeat NOC-Enid.

Cowgirls stole the lead late and defeated NOC-Enid 4-3 on Thursday.

The game was tied at three with Cowgirls batting in the bottom of the fifth when Katy Medlin singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.

In the second inning, NOC-Enid got their offense started. Ashleigh McCause grounded out, scoring one run. Medlin toed the rubber for the Cowgirls. The righthander allowed eight hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out eight. Madison Gabeau was in the pitcher’s circle for NOC-Enid. The pitcher surrendered four runs on 11 hits over six innings, walking zero. Cowgirls socked one home run on the day. Kenna Wofford had a homer in the fourth inning. Cowgirls tallied 11 hits. Shy Shipman, Kyzia Whisenhunt, Kaylee Johnson, and Medlin each racked up multiple hits for the Cowgirls. Medlin, Johnson, Whisenhunt, and Shipman each collected two hits to lead the Cowgirls. Cowgirls didn’t commit a single error in the field. Wofford had seven chances in the field, the most on the team. NOC-Enid racked up eight hits. Slater Eck, Dru Bryant, and Macy Stockton all had multiple hits for NOC-Enid.

Game Two of the day, Johnson drove in runs on a home run in the third and a home run in the fourth.

In the first inning, NOC-Enid got their offense started. Makenzie Richards singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. Cowgirls took the lead for good with four runs in the third inning. In the third Katy Medlin doubled on a 1-1

The pitcher surrendered three runs on five hits over five innings, striking out six and walking zero. Tori Mcnabb was on the rubber for NOC-Enid. The pitcher went two innings, allowing six runs on four hits, striking out one and walking zero.

Kylee McDaniel and Ashleigh McCause entered the game from the bullpen, throwing two innings and one-third of an inning respectively. The Cowgirls launched two home run on the day.

Johnson had a four bagger in the third and fourth innings. Cowgirls racked up ten hits. Shy Shipman, Kyzia Whisenhunt, and Johnson all collected multiple hits for the Cowgirls. Johnson, Whisenhunt, and Shipman each collected two hits to lead the Cowgirls.

NOC-Enid totaled five hits in the game. Alexis Enslinger and Richards each had multiple hits for NOC-Enid.

NOC-Enid didn’t commit a single error in the field. Megan Lee had seven chances in the field, the most on the team.

Jones, McHenry Crowned During All-School Homecoming Connors State College held their annual All-School Homecoming coronation at the half-time of the Connors State and Redlands men’s basketball game on March 11 inside the Melvin Self Field House.

Sophomores Christian Jones and Sharriell McHenry were crowned Homecoming King and Queen.

CHEROKEE NATION DONATION In support of Connors State basketball programs, the Cherokee Nation provided funding to be used in conjunction with other recently obtained donations to upgrade and replace the Melvin Self Fieldhouse scoreboard. The donation was greatly appreciated and is a strong reflection of the cooperative relationship with Cherokee Nation community partners.
