Cowboys and Cowgirls Tip-Off 2023-2024 Basketball Seasons Basketball season is here in Warner, and the Cowboys & and Cowgirls are off to a hot start. The teams are now a few weeks into their campaigns and sit at a combined 14-1.
with 50. Freshman Khamani Cooper has contributed early in his collegiate career, with averages of 15.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.
The Cowboys have established an unblemished record, with 8 wins in as many games. Their success is marked by precision in shooting and effective teamwork, holding the 2nd position in the nation for field goal percentage at 58.5% and ranking 4th in free throw percentage with 80.7%.
Teamwork is evident in their 8th national rank for assists per game, averaging 22.9. The Cowboys' balanced approach sets the stage for an intriguing season ahead. For the Cowgirls, they’ve put together a solid 6-1 record. Their success is characterized by a multifaceted game, excelling in offensive production, rebounding, and defensive prowess.
Sophomore Brayden Hubbard has emerged as a scoring force, averaging 23.9 points per game and securing the 7th spot nationally. Donyae May has been instrumental in playmaking, leading the team with 6.3 assists per game and claiming the 11th position in total assists
Offensively, the Cowgirls rank 4th in the nation for points per game with 88.7. Their size and its effect on games is evident, ranking 10th in defensive rebounds (32.7 per game) and 9th in offensive rebounds (19.4 per game). The Cowgirls also claim the 4th spot nationally

in total rebounds per game (52.1) and 3rd in assists per game (21.7). Additionally, the Cowgirls lead the nation in blocks per game with an impressive 6.9, emphasizing their defensive strength. “Our size has obviously been a huge asset for us so far,” remarked Cowgirls’ Head Coach Jamie Fisher. “The ability to control that part of the game, and the team’s willingness to share the basketball are going to make us a tough task for opponents,” added Fisher. Hatiana Releford continues her strong run of form from last season, leading the team with 18.2 points per game and showcasing versatility with 13.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. Samantha Shanks' transition to the point guard role has been more than effective, leading the

team with 7.4 assists per game, while also contributing 9.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Freshman Alyse Holliman has been a valuable addition, averaging 14.6 points, 3.0 blocks, and 9.0 rebounds per game. In December, the teams each have two games at home before beginning Region 2 play on January 11th at home against Seminole State. Men’s Basketball Honors Veterans at Annual Patriotic Night Connors State College proudly paid tribute to veterans during a special Veterans Night at the men's basketball game held on November 14th. The event, organized by CSC Campus Life, was a heartfelt expression of gratitude and respect for the men and women who have served in the military. The evening commenced with a touching recognition ceremony for the veterans in attendance, acknowledging their sacrifice and service to the nation. The highlight of the event was a speech delivered by Patty Webber, a CSC staff member and Air Force veteran.
As a token of appreciation, all veterans in attendance were presented with a gift, courtesy of CSC Campus Life. The gesture aimed to convey the college's deep appreciation for the dedication and commitment of those who have served in the armed forces. "We are immensely grateful for the service and sacrifices of our veterans. Veterans Night at the basketball game was a small but heartfelt way to honor and recognize their contributions," expressed Patty Webber.
Connors State Hosts Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner Connors State College and the President's Leadership Class recently extended a warm invitation to the community for its annual Thanksgiving dinner. This cherished event, designed to bring people together, was a heartwarming celebration of gratitude and community.
The festive occasion provided attendees with a free, delicious meal, fostering a sense of unity and gratitude among those who came together to share in the spirit of Thanksgiving. "We believe in giving back to the

community and the importance of coming together and breaking bread. The annual Thanksgiving dinner is one way of expressing thanks and building connections within the broader community," said Jake Lawson, Dean of

Campus Life Hosts Halloween Costume Contest In a break from the routine, Campus Life recently organized a Halloween Costume Contest for faculty and staff. The contest saw remarkable individual and departmental winners. The event added a festive touch to campus life, with participants donning imaginative costumes. Office of Recruitment Hosts Junior/Senior Day on Warner Campus Connors State College proudly reports a landmark turnout for its recent Junior/Senior Day, with over 200 students representing 15 schools. The day commenced with insightful talks from CSC faculty, staff, and accomplished alumni, providing valuable perspectives on the transformative power of a CSC education. This year's attendees experienced an extended campus exploration through guided tours, immersing themselves in the college's diverse academic offerings and facilities. The day concluded on a communal note with students enjoying a meal, fostering connections and offering a taste of the vibrant campus life.
The record-breaking attendance not only underscores the growing enthusiasm for education but also reflects Connors State College's unwavering commitment to providing an informative and inclusive experience for prospective students. “It was great getting to see so many prospective students on campus,” remarked Director of Recruitment, Grace Blackwell. “I hope we were able to show them everything that Connors State has to offer”. CSC Faculty and Staff Present and Receive Awards at Fall OACC Conference On Friday, October 6, 2023, Connors State College made a significant mark at the Oklahoma Association of Community Colleges (OACC) 56th Annual and Support Staff Conference. Not only did CSC receive prestigious awards, but its faculty and staff also led insightful presentations, contributing to the academic discourse. Awards Recognizing Excellence: Outstanding Support Staff: Audri Mannon, Administrative Assistant, Residential Life. Outstanding Professional Employee: Jake Lawson, Dean of Students. Outstanding Faculty: Lynett Rock, Division Chair & Instructor. Additionally, CSC faculty and staff showcased their expertise by leading two presentations for their peers at the event.

ChatGPT in Higher Education: Uses, Misuses, and AI Literacy Interventions: This presentation delved into the impact of ChatGPT in higher education, exploring its history and specific applications. Encouraging Authentic Learning and Engagement in a Digital World: Using OneNote to Bolster Learning and Reduce Student Cheating: The second presentation centered around the use of Microsoft's OneNote, specifically the Classroom Notebook, as a tool to enhance authentic learning and reduce instances of student cheating. The success of CSC at the conference reflects the institution's dedication to excellence in education and its role as a leader in addressing contemporary challenges in higher learning.
SPOTLIGHTS Student Spotlight: Bethany Effinger (Wister, OK) Bethany Effinger, a sophomore at Connors State College, is a student from Wister, Oklahoma majoring in Animal Science. After graduating high school, Bethany immediately felt at home in Warner. “Connors was the only place I toured. As soon as I was here I knew it was where I wanted to be. I love how close everyone here is, and that Connors has given me the opportunity to Show at the collegiate level,” remarked Bethany. Here at Connors, she is a member of the Show Team, Aggie Club, the BCM, and regularly gives campus tours to prospective students for the Office of Recruitment. “I have loved it here at Connors, and
would tell anyone that they should give it a shot”. After graduating from Connors, she plans to attend Oklahoma State University, where she will continue to major in Animal Science.
Alumni Spotlight: Dave Holloway (‘57) David Holloway was born in Wagoner, Oklahoma to Leonard and Helen Holloway. Growing up, David cherished family, including his sisters Marilyn and Marion. His passion for sports would perimate throughout his life. Upon graduating from Wagoner High School in 1955, he pursued higher education at Northeastern State College, initially focused on basketball, before transferring to to play football at Connors State College under Coach W.T. Johnson, earning All-American recognition.
After leaving Connors, Holloway attended the College of the Ozarks, earning degrees in mathematics and physics. Despite an engineering career in sight, he embraced football, becoming Athletic Director and Head Coach at Murfreesboro High School, also teaching advanced math and physics with the same fervor he had on the field. In 1961, he would marry his wife, Jo Barnes. In 1962, he led the Rattler Track Team to a State Championship. His football teams recorded a remarkable 31 consecutive wins in 1964 and 1965, and media declared them 1965 Class 2A

Arkansas State Football Champions, a title he cherished. David's coaching expertise led to an invitation to join the Arkansas Athletic Association’s West All-Star Coaching Staff in 1965, reflecting his dedication.

In the 1970s, he held various positions in the Arkansas Activities Association, including president. In 1979, he made a life-altering choice, leaving coaching to be present with his wife, Jo, and daughter, Shannon Leigh, embracing the role of "Dad" in a new chapter in his life.

Sudden-Death Finish Ends Historic First Season 2023 Cowboy Soccer Review by Richard Benge: It was a tale of two halves on a Thursday in Enid. The Connors State men's soccer team raced out to a 2-0 lead at half-time before Rose State scored two goals of their own to force sudden death. In the NJCAA, overtime is sudden-death, and with 10 seconds left and a favorable wind at their back, the Raiders found the one goal they need to advance and send the Cowboys home early. For as heartbreaking of an end that was, the season was a resounding success on multiple fronts. From the opening training session on August 11th when the players met for the first time to October, the growth of the team and the impact they've had in the region has been apparent. The team recorded their first win in September, holding off a late comeback attempt from Rich Mountain to record a 3-2 result at Hatbox.
They followed that result with a 2-1 upset of Rose State in Midwest City, the second of three contests against the Raiders that all ended with a one-goal margin, creating a must-watch fixture every time the two teams met. Two draws against NEO and a second win against Rich Mountain were enough to power Connors State to the fifth seed, and in the process, the Cowboys became the only first-year program in the NJCAA to qualify for their regional tournament. Connors State will have a solid core to build around in year two. In the attack, seven different players scored goals, led by freshman Yaw Frimpong who scored eight goals en route to earning Region 2 and National Player of the Week honors and being named to the All-Region Second Team.

ATHLETICS Defensively, the Cowboys are led by a pair of quality center backs and a pair of goalkeepers. Miguel Gonzales and Chris Drysdale started all but three games together at center back, forming a partnership that drew praise from coaches around the region and will only improve ahead of next season. Gonzales in particular earned recognition from coaches around the region for his ability to step into the midfield and was called "the Spanish John Stones" by one coach. In goal, Alvaro Becerril and Jelan Ward split the majority of the matches, with each earning two wins on the season. Becerill recorded 54 saves while Ward made 27 stops. Additionally, Ward's two
wins were shutouts and his performance against Rich Mountain in the regular season finale earned him Region 2 and National Goalkeeper of the Week honors. Head coach Adam Skolnick was full of praise for the job the team did this season. "To do what we did in our first season is spectacular. It's not easy as a first-year program to compete like we did where no team was ever able to play us out of the park. We have laid down a great foundation to build on for the next season. This group of young men showed the Connors is going to be a very special program for many years to come."
Cowgirls Show Steady Growth in First Season: 2023 Cowgirls Soccer Review by Richard Benge For the women's soccer team, the injuries started as the team started to hit its stride, with the Cowgirls playing the last eight games of the season with less than three substitutes on the bench, forcing players to play 90 minutes every match.

Despite the depleted roster, the team played some of its best soccer of the year, with Coach Adam Skolnick praising their development and ability to connect passes later in the season.
ATHLETICS "The task that these young women had this season was always going to be tough. We are in a tough region and as a firstyear program we went into the season wanting to be competitive, but not quite sure what was coming our way," Skolnick said. "Having as many players go down with injuries as we did made the task even harder. The perseverance that this group showed this season is something special that we can continue to build on." The growth culminated in the team's first win in program history, a 5-0 result over UA-Cossatot, and one of the most entertaining games in the region this year, a 3-2 loss to NEO that saw Connors jump out to a 2-0 lead before the lack of substitutes and a rowdy crowd-powered NEO to 3 late goals to take the win. Despite the results throughout the season, there are several bright spots that the team will be able to build around. Taylor Moore had a fantastic freshman campaign, scoring six goals and adding two assists. For her efforts, Moore twice was recognized as Region 2 Player of the Week.
Defensively, the Cowgirls featured a solid partnership between Maika Robert and Sahra Khajavi. The pair started all but two games together and that chemistry will continue to grow through the spring season and into 2024. In goal, freshman Kaylee Ballinger was busy all season long, making an incredible 175 saves, the most in Region 2 and third-most in NJCAA Division 1. The hard work was rewarded in the 5-0 win over Cossatot, with Ballinger earning her first collegiate shutout. When asked about the season, Coach Skolnick was proud of the job the women did despite all the adversity the team faced. "Even though results didn't go our way, the ladies have a lot to be proud of. Getting the first win in program history in the first season is not easy, but the group worked hard to get there. Having players earn recognition from other coaches, shown by multiple Regional Player of the Week awards, should show the group that we have gained the respect of our peers. This group has laid down a great foundation for the future."
Steer Wrestlers Find Success This Fall CSC Rodeo has found success at multiple events this Fall in Steer Wrestling. At the Colby Rodeo, Kix Fenton posted a time of 6.6 in the long round, securing a position in the short round where he finished 11th. Nathan Duvall claimed 4th place in the long round with a time of 4.9. In the short round, he maintained consistency, finishing 6th with a time of 8.5, ultimately
securing 6th place in the overall average. In Stillwater, Duvall continued his success, sharing the long-round victory with a time of 4.1. Wyatt Scales secured 3rd place in the long round with a time of 4.2. In the short round, he maintained his momentum, finishing 5th with a time of 5.4.
